one of my favorite painterly pieces ive done lately: Al'ixia-MariUnak!!

my baby girl <3

she's got a longer backstory so here we go:

the society she's born into values social standing, beauty and prestige above all they are the high elven royalty of the mountains

her mother is of elven royalty, but her biological father was a wandering human bard that promptly disappeared. her mother's husband is also elven royalty and having a half-elf child was a big enough embarrassment and danger to his social standing that he had little infant al'ixia left in the forest to be devoured by beasts (to actively kill a child is frowned upon, but if they happen to die well... it is understandable that certain embarrassments need to be rid of)

her mother finds out though, and runs to the forest to save her little baby. when she gets there, al'ixia is already scratched and bitten (<the sideways scar on her face and others on jer body) and so cold. moments before she dies, before she should have died, her mother calls on an eldrich being. the forests in the mountains are full of potent and dangerous magic, and it works. her imfamt daughter is brought back to life, and immediately starts wailing. however, the being took a sacrifice - al'ixia eyes (those scars can never heal, but at least they dont hurt. she can still see somewhat too, though not in colors and with dark spots)

al'ixia grows up. hated by her father and sheltered by her mother, she has little contact with anyone outside their home. she does get to learn everything she wants though. eventually that includes sword fighting, which she get quite good at. she daydreams about the outside world. her father ignores her rather then hating her eventually, and he even tells her about his adventures in the outside world from his youth on some evenings. he doesn't care for her as his child, but tolerates her, as long as she doesn't embarass him further.

when she reaches adulthood (which well, is a bit complicated for halfelves, but its what she herself considers to be adulthood) she leaves her family's estate. she doesnt tell anyone, but does leave behind a letter. it doesnt do anything to help her family's reputation . she finds the outer world much warmer but still incredibly mean as her home was. she hides her scars behind her hair, but at least her ears dont bring scowls to peoples faces.

she meets a ragtag group of adventures and joins them. they get hired for a job and its really fun! al is having fun with other people for once, and its great, and they're such a diverse group from different walks of life and al'ixia is so excited. and then the mission goes wrong, and they're overpowered, and one of her party members falls unconscious, and then another stoos breathing and then al'ixia herself dies.

her parents are contacted by the last standing person in their party. al'ixia's body is kept in a freezer of the inn her party was staying in. both her parents arrive with all the fanfare that high elves showing up in a random village deserve. her mother goes to her side and hold her hand and makes the same decision she did years ago.

when Al'ixia-MariUnak wakes up again her scarred eyes are flowing with disgusting black ooze. she turns to the person holding her hand - her momma - and she sees something terrible. her mother has once again made a pact. and this time, she gave her own eyes for the life of her child. they hug, and cry, and al'ixia isn't angry but inky because she really really missed her mom.

al'ixia's father is furious, with both of them, but blames al'ixia. how dare she disfigure his wife. in a society where beauty has such an effect on social standing, its the same as accusing him of horrible crimes outright. he does not spare alixia a single glance and pulls her mother with him.

that's as far as her canonical story goes ! just as most of my special twelve characters, she was a dnd character in a campaign that never got finished, so her story isnt either.

eventually she learns acceptance, first from her party, and then from herself, and stop hiding. she's still socially awkward and naive and anxious, but she heals some of the pains in her heart that loneliness put there.

she is a half elf though, and when she visit her home again and her mother sees how much she's grown while her mother stays the same well... her mother makes plans for a third and final pact.

wanna put together a more coherent exploration of the society her parents live in someday, not limited to name meanings, environmental challenges and the social rituals surrounding them, what the area even looks like etc. but its all just pictures in my head atm. someday tho
