General Headcanons

He was born November 24 1965. He’s currently 56, but I usually write him in his late 40s in most fanfic and content I make. So there’s this middle aged man....

He has hazel eyes. Sometimes they look green, sometimes brown. Sometimes they’ll be white but that’s when he’s using his magic so mind your business

:) i think he has piercings and tattoos, a skull (dead man teehee) on his upper arm, a tattoo of a date (the date pickles and him first met TEEHEE) on his left arm also has a tattoo on his arm of the day he “died” on his right. had his ears pierced when he was a teen.

Has a sweet tooth so hard. Smuggles in treats into the drawers of his desk just to snack on during the day and has a mini fridge just filled with ice cream and also sorts of other goodies. He loves brownies and cookies the most

Likes to work out and keep himself in shape. it takes his mind off of stressful things like work and the boys, and just take his morning practice sparring and doing various exercises in the mordhaus gym.

he’s uh also very flexible so he does yoga a lot when he exercises. don’t. look too deep into that

cannot cook to save his life. he almost burned mordhaus down trying to make himself a sandwich

he can play guitar! he used to play it more often when he was younger but he rarely has the time to play it nowadays. when he does get to play it, it’s usually in private (and mainly songs by dethklok), or it’s to show off to a certain lead guitarist that yes he is playing that solo wrong

he’s ambidextrous but prefers using his right hand. he’ll use his left hand to spar in order to go easy on his opponents because hes a smug cunt

he’s 5′7 but intimidation factor adds a couple inches doesn’t it

has a scorpion named princess as a pet. he lets her sit on his desk sometimes and it scares the shit out of dethklok which makes charles laugh on the inside

hes also a cat person. one time toki brought a cat home and it settled on charles’ lap and he almost cried

loves to be a smug asshole and relishes in it. will not take shit from anyone, especially from some asshole who is trying to pull one over on him

he has no idea how social media works at all. will print memes out to show to dethklok, he’s very fond of cat memes specifically (i can has cheeseburger type beat)

he has no idea what any internet memes means he isn’t going to start learning. he is going to misuse internet phrases. are you boys, ah, finding the imposter? [cue five groans from dethklok]

knows a lot of languages. not a comprehensive list but: french, swedish, norwegian, spanish, italian, japanese, chinese, german, russian and korean

is very competitive. scarily competitive. once he starts losing in smash or mario kart all hell will break lose

very bad at showing emotions or affection, when he gets compliments he gets all red and quiet and mumbles a thank you.

weird about being touched as well and will usually avoid it unless it’s with someone he trusts

speaking of, his love language is acts of service :)c

hates being called charlie or chuck, unless the right person calls him it ;)

he’s autistic. was nonverbal for most of his life and only talked to certain people, or anyone at all. he stims with his hands and uses his pens to fidget.

has a collection of novelty socks. he likes the ones that have polka dots or stripes

sleeps with a garfield plushie he had since he was younger. it helps him with the nightmares

when any of the boys need help sleeping (usually toki or pickles), he’ll sleep with them in his bed. after dying he had trouble sleeping some nights, so dethklok returned the favor and all piled up in his bed and helped him sleep. he didnt have nightmares after that night

hes nearsighted, and prefers to wear glasses over contacts

lactose intolerant, hes still eating mac n cheese and paying the price

metalhead but pretends to not be just to mess with his boys

crippling addiction to match 3 games. also loves to play minecraft.

overly self sacrificial. puts ones he love needs before his own, results in himself being very isolated and distant from those he cares about because he’s afraid of hurting them

his favorite colors are black and purple

coffee kinda guy. black coffee or bust

has a lot of cute novelty mugs to put his coffee in. he ones from places where dethklok tours, dethklok official ones (the only two that aren’t adorned with spikes), some cat themed ones, a couple that have ties and math references, and one from his boys that says “most brutal manager”. he drinks out of that last one the most

he has a couple of grey hairs and wrinkles, but he keeps them because they remind him that he’s human. also pickles said old men were hot but you didnt hear that from me

likes to play chess but he can never find a good opponent. all the klokateers are too scared if they win and dethklok is too distracted to ever play with him or they end up losing to quickly if charles plays against them

really wants kids. he babies his sister’s sons and daughters a TON (uncle charles always brings the best gifts :) ) and also treats toki like his own son in a way. toki doesnt mind, he really appreciates the love

speaking of, toki does call charles dad once and it makes charles cry for like. a week and a half

his favorite dethklok song is the gears :)

he likes to collect knives as a side hobby, his favorite of his collection is a sleek black one with skulls on the handle

he has a motorcycle and likes to drive it around sometimes to just be alone with himself. it’s all black with a red gear on it

lightweight but only if he drinks the amount dethklok drinks. can hold his alcohol fairly well if he drinks like a sensible human, prefers brandy and wine

he can smoke cigars to be sexy for me and me ONLY

likes to read in his spare time. he likes mystery novels and science fiction

he has soft spot for cheesy sitcoms, they’re his guilty pleasure

his favorite youtuber is lockpickinglawyer. yours should be too

usually sleeps in only his boxers but will wear a shirt if its’s cold. he tends to sleep on his side (also wants to be the little spoon when cuddled but he will never admit that)

takes vacations sometimes away from the boys despite his worry that something will go wrong (it will!). many of his vacations are usually going to visit his family and going to the shore with them, or travelling to somewhere new for a change (cue charles being a yakuza substory on his one vacation per year)

he can sew pretty well. learned from his mom and used to sew the whole his sister use to put through her soccer uniform.

can also do makeup, and usually does it for one of the boys of there’s no one else around to help

bites his lip when he’s nervous. which is a lot

likes chococat and gudetama. he’s a man of tastes

laughs really loud if you catch him off guard. he snorts sometimes too. he’s embarrassed by it, but i think its’ cute

loves law and order obviously

he likes men

has a lot of pent up rage. very good at compressing it. sometimes

as high priest, he stays up very late trying to decipher the ancient prophecies that dethklok needed to fulfill. he doesnt sleep very much when he starts out because he misses home, so the band makes him come back (or else)

also as high priest he becomes more intune with magic granted to him after he died and he mainly uses his magic to protect his boys when they go back to being a band. also to fuck with them

the band he managed before dethklok was a band named savior who said they were a metal band with a unique sound, but that unique sound was actually just being a christian metal band that were bad at playing music. they also treated charles like shit and blamed him for them doing so poorly with sales and shows. had an unfortunate “accident” with a tour bus after charles had enough of their attitude towards him. he denies he had anything to do with it (he did.)

Family/Childhood

He’s the baby of the family. Spoiled rotten to the max. He doesn’t admit it though but whenever he comes home you know he abuses the “:)c im the favorite” card

He has 4 older sisters: Caroline who is a high school civics teacher, Cynthia who is a librarian, Callie who is a coach for a soccer team, and Charlotte who is a lawyer/manager who manages Ladyklok, which gets awkward (and funny) when Abigail starts dating the lead singer Natalie

charles is actually one of the tallest in his family. his dad is 6’1 and his older sister Callie is 5’11. cynthia is 5’6, caroline is 5’6, and his mom and charlotte are 5’5.

his mom is a doctor and his dad is an accountant. his mom’s name is giovanna and his dad’s name is elijah

caroline is the oldest sister, followed by cynthia, callie, charlotte then charles.

Charlotte and Charles are sworn enemies since they were born on the same day a year apart and basically have the same job. They do love each other though

His father calls him Charles. Caroline and Cynthia call him Charlie. Callie calls him Chuck. Charlotte calls him Charles (derogatory). His mom calls him a whole slew of nicknames that she made up when he was young (she calls him cheese ball and he turns red)

caroline has a wife (lauren who is a chef) and two kids (evan and shelby)

cynthia is dating a coworker (viola)

callie has a husband (john who is a stay at home dad) and they have three kids (brenda, melissa, and jeff)

charlotte is dating ladyklok (and abigail). this is a weird flex on charles i think.

He had a race car bed when he was like 5

He also was also one of those kids at family game night. He almost killed Cynthia over a game of monopoly

Always got to lick the spoon first after his mom baked brownies

He grew up in North Jersey (derogatory) (also yes im projecting state shot)

He’s also Italian (derogatory)

He got bullied in middle school for a little bit but once his older sisters found out, oh boy did all hell break loose

Was in band in high school. He played flute (DONT TALK TO ME I LIKE PROJECTING), he was of course a soloist and incredibly smug about it

Took gymnastics as a kid. Can do a backflip on command. Also very flexible.

First manager gig was helping his sisters sell girl scout cookies. They raked in a lot of profits when baby bro was behind the scenes. His cut was eating thin mints for free

Loved Star Trek when he was a kid

Was incredibly gifted, and taught himself to read at a young age. didn’t talk that much though

was always sick when he was little. he would always get sinus infections and colds if someone even sneezed weird

was in mock trial in high school. one guy on his team was a jerk to him so charles made it a point to be this poor kid’s nemesis

was on the student council, treasurer of course.

was also in nhs, and he was treasurer there too

was that kid who insisted on doing the group project by himself because he didn’t want to wait on anyone to finish their part

was super rowdy as a kid, always got into trouble but his mom was a little lenient of punishment (hes a mommas boy)

when he was like super young he bit people cause he was just a little monster (charles' sisters: mom charles is biting again. charles, biting one of them: im not :/ sheesh)

wanted to be a lawyer since he was 7

put his own siblings and parents on trial and would win every trial and would always get the last cookie or a higher allowance

he shared his room with his sister Charlotte and they would set up a pillow fort on one of the beds and stay up late reading together

loved going to the beach as a kid, his mom still has his collection of shells from the beach

on the boardwalk, he would dominate at claw machines anad carnival games. he won a bunch of plushies from himself (and his sisters obviously)

his dad and him have a super close bond. they watched star trek together and also like to watch how the stock market would do. his dad was also sometimes the judge in charles’ mock trials at home

they were very supportive when he came out as gay, he was also the first of his sibilings to come out of the closet

College

Got his masters in business management at rutgers and a JD (law degree) from seton hall law.

Started college when he was 18 (1983) and ended college when he was 26 (1991)

Wasn’t a party guy. Never got invited to many, but he never went unless a certain redhead was in town

Sustained himself off of ramen, coffee, and SSRIs to get his masters (hey man i feel ya)

Did weed like three times. Three of those times were because of, you guessed it, a certain redhead

Speaking of, his first time having sex was in his dorm with Pickles. Pickles also kicked him off of the bed (those beds are fucking tiny) while they slept, and almost burned Charles’ dorm down trying to make toast the next morning

Absolute did not do essays until the night before. Bad habit that made it’s way into Dethklok managing when he’s forced to write a legal brief before 12 am.

Loved calculus 2 for some reason. Nerd

Had a mullet. Pickles thought it was hot (still is) while Charles would rather die than remember anything about that horrid hairdo

Also went through his goth/emo phase while in Law School. He stuck out amongst the sea of sweater vests and polo shirts

Was in a band with his fellow college bandmates. The band was called Habeas Corpses and he was the lead singer who also played guitar. Their sound was kind of similar to TWRP’s first two EPs (The Device and 2nite). they had a grunge aesthetic, and yes charles dyed his mullet black (with a purple streak), for the band.

his bandmates were all fellow law students. dillan was on drums, margaret was their bass guitar, and nick was their keyboardist. all three of them also got tutored by charles while in law school. they are still best friends and write to each other sometimes

Was on the debate team, but uh kicked off due to be very competitive (he threatened to punch the opposing debater)

Was also in the chess club, also kicked off for being too competitive (lunged at a kid for cheating)

After being kicked from the two previous clubs, he joined fencing, his very competitive nature made him the best in the state

nick (the guy in charles’ band) was charles’ roommate the whole time they were in college. they may or may not have had a brief relationship before they realized they would be better as friends

nick also has a nes and charles loved to played zelda and wrote an entire guide for himself because he’s was that into the game (nerd)

occasionally would be found sleeping in the library on campus

wanted to be an RA but the resident association at his schools thought he was a little much. charles took this as a compliment

worked out a lot between studying and classes. a lot of jocks underestimated him because of his size but charles was just :) [casually lifts something heavy]

a lot of fellow classmates thought he was super cool cause of the leather he wore, and how cool and quiet he was, too bad they didnt know he was a huge nerd

tried skateboarding. once.

had a cadillac that barely started and drove like a piece of shit but that was charles’ baby

pickles tried to have sex with charles in said car btw, charles almost killed him for even daring to suggest to tarnish his beautiful baby

has damaged his back permanently because of all the books he used to carry around in his crappy back pack

did some modelling for one of his friends in college. he was very attractive and got some other modelling job through it. he tries to hide that from the boys in the future because he thinks it’s embarrassing

Relationship with Dethklok

Pickles - he’s known the drummer the longest out of any other member, and if you couldn’t tell by now, he had a brief relationship with the drummer back in the 80s (and maybe also still has a crush on him :)). charles respects and admires pickles’ talent as a musician and sometimes they play together when they have time alone. he tries to be there when pickles has a relapse in either emotions with his family or something else, but still tries to maintain a distance because he thinks that pickles doesn’t feel the same as he did in the 80s. (he does btw). nothing could break the bond these two share. not even death

Nathan - understands nathan’s quiet nature (nonverbal kings!) and strive for perfection in everything dethklok creates because he is the same way. their similarities allow them to connect on a level that allows nathan to open up about his feelings that he likes to lock away. nathan also gets charles to open his feelings up and actually care for himself for once in his damn life. charles also helps nathan with the depression he develops after charles dies and how to deal with it despite it being not brutal. nathan wants to give back and he does by becoming one of charles’ closest friends (and maybe even lovers hehehe)

Toki - charles has taken it upon himself to be toki’s father figure after seeing the way toki’s family has left him for essentially dead. ever since toki joined the band, charles has made it a point to be there for him whenever he needed it. even if it meant spending late nights reading to toki or sleeping over in toki’s room to help him sleep, he’ll do it. he blames himself for toki’s disappearance but toki assures him that he did the best he could. toki calls him dad a lot after doomstar. it makes charles cry.

Skwisgaar - unstoppable asshole meets immovable object. skwisgaar sees himself above everyone else like he does with the other dethklok members but with charles, skwisgaar knows that charles isn’t intimidated by him nor will he bow to the guitar god in anyway. this develops a game of cat and mouse between the two, with skwisgaar trying to no subtly push charles’ buttons and to see what makes him ticks, while charles resist him at every turn with a smug ‘:) is that all you got’ and it delights him to finally see the guitarist squirm under pressure.

Murderface - at first the two are very. distant to say the least. murderface used to see charles as unemotional robot and charles was fine with that and accepted the distance. overtime however, and especially after charles died, murderface warmed up to charles confiding in him things he hasn’t told the band, mainly things about his insecurities because charles is ‘fucking smart with crap like this’. and charles helps him and is happy to see him work out his problems and not bottle them anymore like the rest of his bandmates. charles also enjoys murderface’s company as a friend as well. and….he’s gonna help murderface the most with the whole traitor stuff too.

Abigail - mlm and wlw hostility. but seriously they’re good buds. he sympathizes with having to deal the moronic actions of dethklok on a daily basis and also thinks she’s really intelligent and overall fun to hang out with. they take lunch breaks frequently together and like to make fun of people at dethklok dinners together as a fun activity together. abigail will bully his ass once she finds out she’s dating charles’ sister and WILL bring up those baby pictures to get a higher raise thank you very much

Knubbler - can you say coworker besties! like abigail, he gets along because they both have to deal with dethklok being, well dethklok, but with knubbler, charles can relax a little more. the two cause problems on purpose just because they can. the two are also close friends and knubbler tries to get charles to relax for once in his life, and despite charles protests and objections, he sometimes caves and hands out with his friend (maybe boyfriend OOOOO who knows)

Sex Headcanons (IM SORRY)

um maybe he can have a giant dick (10 inches for me), it do be swinging though

Happy International Women’s Day

In honour of today being International Women’s Day, I thought I’d share some of my favourite books with awesome female leads. There’s obviously tons of books out there that fit that criteria, but here are 6 of my more underrated favourites presented in no particular order:

Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett

Genre: YA Fantasy

Summary: Kate Brighton has been living as an outcast ever since her father tried to assassinate the king. She works for the Relay- the courier system where only the most skilled riders survive. Fortunately, Kate has the ability to manipulate the minds of animals, which helps her stay alive. Unfortunately, this type of magic is forbidden and if she’s caught she could be exiled or killed. It’s also this magic that causes her to come across the aftermath of a deadly dragon attack, the sole survivor of which is Prince Corwin, Kate’s first love. The two will have to put the past behind them, because unusual dragon attack is just the beginning.

Other highlights: This book had all the potential to be a very generic read but somehow managed to not be. Kate is not just a badass, but also has a more vulnerable side to her which makes her more relatable. This book also features an actually healthy romance and did I mention that the girl saves the boy in this one?

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

Genre: YA Historical Fiction (but with a tiny bit of fantasy)

Summary: Felicity Montague just really wants to be a doctor, but since it’s the 1700′s it’s almost impossible for her to do so. However, when she learns that her childhood friend is getting married to one of her idols, Felicity uses it as an opportunity to try and make her dreams come true. She travels down to Germany with Sim, a mysterious girl who agrees to pay for Felicity’s way. But Sim has an agenda of her own, and once it’s uncovered Felicity becomes part of dangerous quest that will take her from Germany all the way down to Algeria.

Other highlights: This is technically a sequel to the Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (which I also recommend). Just like it’s predecessor, The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy also has a small but diverse cast (Sim is Muslim, and while it’s never outright stated in the book the author has confirmed that Felicity is asexual. Her brother and his boyfriend also make an appearance, the latter of which is biracial). This story also handles the “not like most girls” trope in the best way possible.

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

Genre: YA Sci-fi

Summary: Spensa dreams of becoming a pilot, but because her father was labelled a coward, everyone is working against her. Even when she does make it into flight school, she has to work twice as hard because the people in charge don’t want her to end up like her father. But when Spensa comes across an ancient, sentient ship called M-Bot she convinces it to to help her defend her planet.

Other highlights: If you like a book with lots of action then I’d highly recommend this one! At 513 pages, it’s more on the longer side but it always feels like something is happening. The fight scenes in this book are amazing, and there’s some really cool world building as well. And honestly, Spensa is an awesome protagonist.

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Genre: YA Mystery/Thriller

Trigger Warnings: Abuse, pedophilia, murder, rape (let me know if I missed any)

Summary: After the death of her younger sister, Sadie sets out to find the man who killed her. She follows a trail of clues, hoping that it will lead to her sister’s murderer so that she can find justice. Meanwhile, West McCray, a radio personality hears about Sadie’s story. He starts a podcast that details his own journey to see if he can find out what happened to Sadie, who is now a missing person.

Other highlights: This book will make you so emotional! The bond between Sadie and her sister felt so real, and was so well written. Sadie also has a stutter, and while I can’t say whether it was accurately written or not I haven’t seen any complaints about it yet. It does hit on some pretty heavy topics though, but I felt like it was handled well.

The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind by Jackson Ford

Genre: Adult Sci-fi/ Mystery

Summary: Tegan Frost has the ability to move shit with her mind. As far as she knows, she’s the only one with this ability. So when a man winds up dead, murdered in a way that could only have been done by someone with telekinetic abilities all the suspicions fall on Tegan. Tegan knows she’s innocent, but she only has 24 hours to prove it.

Other Highlights: First of all, yes, that is the real title. And this book is kind of exactly what you would expect with a title like that. Tegan is the sassy and sarcastic protagonist that I’ve been waiting for. Even though she does have that edge she’s not a one dimensional character (she kind of reminds me of Deadpool or like a better version of Maximum Ride in that sense). It’s honestly a super fun read, and also criminally underrated.

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

Genre: YA Alternate History/ Adventure

Summary: Set in an alternate history where the Germans won WW2 Yael is a former concentration camp victim, who as the result of some of the Nazi’s experiments can alter her appearance. Yael uses this ability to enter the Axis Tour; an annual motorcycle race that starts in Berlin and ends in Tokyo. Disguised as the previous year’s winner, Yael hopes to win the race so that she can win the private audience with Adolph Hitler and kill him.

Other Highlights: I mean the plot of this one is kind of the main selling point. It may sound a little bit out there but it is honestly one of the most unique books I’ve ever read. Ryan Graudin didn’t write this just so people can say that originality is dead.

can you talk about when you were aphobic and why you changed your mindset? The general consensus is that aces and aros can hide their identity and don't go through the same abuse as the other sexualities and a huge part of the people against them say they are attention seekers and shouldn't bother to try to be in the community. Is this line of thought accurate? Legit curiosity here

Because Tumblr is an incredibly well coded website, trying to post this on my phone for whatever reason vaporized the ask so I had to resend it to myself verbatim. Hopefully posting this on my desktop won’t like, completely break the website. A plus, though- I sent a link to the broken post with a screenshot of the original ask on my Twitter, and a lot of my friends who also used to be aphobes at the same time as me said this all rang true to their experiences as well, and I put a lot of things into words for how they felt during that time. So, I’d say this is pretty accurate for a lot of aphobes who didn’t go as far as having discourse blogs, at least. Anyways!

I’ve actually been meaning to address this about myself publicly for a while, so you’re fine! It’s kind of amazing... I used to get so mad when people called aphobia rebranded homophobia, but recollecting a lot of what I thought... that’s literally what it is. This is going under a cut because it’s a really long post with a lot of personal info, but if people wanna rb they can, idc.

This is... a really loaded question, so it’s probably going to be a long answer, because there are a lot of very intricate factors that lead to the aphobia in the LGBT community and gatekeeping, I think. One very important fact for my experiences that’ll make sense why it’s relevant later (or right away, if you know your aphobic troll talking points) is that my uncle was gay and died in the AIDS crisis before I was born.

I think the two biggest factors overall are 1) aphobic troll posts often getting heavy traction and 2) misunderstanding the ace/aro - allo dynamic as being oppressed - oppressor, rather than the actual dynamic of fellow community members sharing different experiences.

In my experience, the consensus is also less about attention seeking, more about aces actually being cishet and trying to steal LGBT resources. The “hiding their identity” logic in my experiences was also less that, and more that being ace/aro didn’t actually impact their identity enough to be “oppressed”.

Basically, the MO is that being ace doesn’t make you LGBT because asexuality impacts how you feel attraction, not the attraction you feel in and of itself (not true), and thusly if you’re heteromantic/heterosexual along with being ace/aro, you’re still cishet. (Or, if you’re aroace, you’re not cishet, but you’re still more privileged and not a part of the community because you’re not oppressed for experiencing same gender attraction.) That’s the gatekeeper logic in a nutshell.

The biggest thing that makes people aphobic, I think, is as I said: troll posts. In recent years, the only things to really come across my feed about asexuality when not from aces are solidarity posts. Because of that, I’m not sure if the posts that bait people are the same as when I was younger, or if using troll posts at all are even as prevalent now. However, they were very prevalent on my feed in 2014-2016. They’d be standard homophobic talking points, but dressed up on fakewoke language with aces and aros as the punchline - generally, things along the line of, “These two gay kids were holding hands at my school’s GSA today and it disgusted me because I’m romance repulsed.” Things that, in hindsight, are really obviously fake, and were really obviously said to rile up LGBT people. The most infamous line of rhetoric trolls used, which is what got myself and many others I know to go aphobic, was, “if aces were a part of the LGBT community, the AIDS crisis would have done less damage because aces would convince people to have less sex.” You can see why this would enrage several of LGBT people, especially someone like me who has very, very personal losses related to the AIDS crisis. It was a lot of cheap shots at an extremely vulnerable community to rile them up against their own, and unfortunately it worked hook, line, and sinker.

Something that really pushed the “us vs. them” mentality that had people fall for posts like this is that many ace people put more focus on the asexuality than they do other aspects of their identity, leading us to assume a much higher ratio were cishet than in realty. (This, and conversely the “well I support LGBT aces, just not the cishet ones” is an aspect that MAJORLY gives me homophobia vibes now. Acting entitled to extremely personal information on peoples’ attraction and gender is so, SO invasive, and it’s something LGBT people are subject to enough /all the time/ outside of their own community, let alone also being forced to in it.)

With this foundation set, it brings me to point two. Many people were very predisposed from aphobic troll posts to viewing aces/aros as homophobic cishets, so when actual aces coined allosexual/alloromantic to talk about their experiences, people completely misunderstood the meanings of these terms and once again took out their aggression on them. I think I summarized it pretty succinctly in my introduction, but these terms were created so aces/aros could talk about their unique experiences in contrast to other people, both in and out of the LGBT community. However, aphobes took it the wrong way (especially with the help of - surprise! - more troll posts!) and viewed it as if ace people were saying having romantic/sexual attraction at all makes you more privileged than them, and thusly are oppressing them. Obviously, this isn’t true - aces/aros are oppressed by cishet people, just like the rest of the LGBT community. The terms only existed for clarification.

This was another key factor for me in particular- my sexual attraction to women was a very, VERY vulnerable point for me that I struggled with for years, even after coming out. The concept that I could have privilege over another person for something I had so much difficulty with was incredibly insulting. This was probably my peak in aphobia, because I felt MY community was being invaded by my oppressors and trying to spin me to be the oppressor.

There’s a lot more aspects of aphobia, I think the vulnerability a lot of LGBT people have is another very major aspect to why a lot latched onto aphobia. That’s a very complicated subject I’m not quite sure how to delve into besides what I’ve already explained on it lending itself to those aspects, however. There was also just... a lot of straight up denying facts that you didn’t agree with. The most common I can remember is denying corrective rape happened because of aphobia, and insisting it was actually misogyny. Which... I’ve used eloquent language to this point, but I’m going to be blunt: telling someone they’re wrong about how/why they experienced their abuse is fucking disgusting.

I think that covers the bases for how I felt during this period... I didn’t follow discourse blogs or anything, so a lot of my friends just stopped reblogging it as we realized a lot of it was also just an excuse people made up so they could bully ace kids. From there, it was mostly just slowly opening up, reading the posts my ace friends made and shared on the subject, and reflecting on myself. It was definitely a progressive process; I went from “neutral on ace discourse” after realizing most aces aren’t even cis and/or hetero (though, ftr, it doesn’t matter if they are or not)

Then late last year/early this year I started feeling isolated in the community for not being attracted to men (which was a personal thing and not the fault of other groups), and... things started clicking. I realized that aces, regardless of orientation, also lacked either sexual and/or romantic attraction to men, and suddenly started feeling less alone - especially because ace lesbians also exist. While I don’t think I particularly reached out, my mind opened up significantly more with that, and I started realizing a lot of common ground between us as a community in general.

While I was having this realization, posts started coming on my feed about just how badly the ace community had been damaged by the rise of aphobia and ace discourse, and it started really sinking in just how horrific aphobia truly is. An entire community was more or less dismantled right when it was just starting to thrive, and the members are only just now starting to get back to a place of comfort again. It’s sickening, especially to know I was a part of it. Last month I saw a post about an ace lesbian being harassed at a pride event because she only had ace merch on, and someone justified it with her making her identity “about sex” - That was what really solidified everything for me and how much I’ve changed, because that is what homophobes say about nonsexual gay PDA with zero changes.

I do want to apologize to all the ace people in my life, both if you knew I felt this way, or if you’re just finding out I used to feel this way and are hurt by it. I know I’ve apologized to at least one person privately, but you can’t truly love someone if you don’t support all aspects of them. I’ve worked ridiculously hard to unlearn everything, but that doesn’t justify that I thought these things to begin with. I understand any action people need to take to feel comfortable.

This was... a really deeply personal post that covers half a decade, more or less. But it does feel good to get out and like a weight has been lifted. Like I said, this is something I’ve wanted to publicly talk about and own up to, but didn’t know how to go about it. If nothing else, I think this is a pretty comprehensive look at how aphobes think and operate for resource purposes.

self-destructive, lonely, secretive, deceptive, overly-sexual, impulsive, dominant, broken.

what do you know about your character that they don’t know yet?

you do things in order to be safe, but nobody will ever stay around to save your from yourself. besides that, you’re a functional alcoholic, go get help.

what are your character’s major flaws?

her way of escaping reality and trying to justify what she has done to herself. she’s too self-destructive, so much that she doesn’t care if she destroys others along the way.

what would your character give their life for?

absolutely nothing, and this is terrifying.

what is your character’s greatest asset?

she is the perfect distraction, because she is the perfect actress. she will be exactly what you want, and also exactly what you don’t want. this helps build the entire mysterious aura around herself, distancing everyone from her true persona. also, she has an amazing strategical mind, she can plan things and execute them impeccably. vesper is a great musician, and has a great musical sense, but she really likes to pretend she doesn’t. physically would be her great stamina and high alcohol tolerance ? besides that, she is tall and sexy. she loves it.

what would completely break your character?

having to face her father and go through the abuse and neglect he had put her through and being back at her summer house in nice, where everything happened.

does your character have any quirks or weird habits?

she plucks out her eyelashes when she’s too stressed, that was also one of the enablers for her drinking habits, because she thinks it’s a really awful habit. she also really likes pickles with mustard for breakfast.

describe your character’s family.

vesper comes from old money, the third generation of korean-english bang. her father’s family is known for being specialists in precious gems, jewels and such ( as well as mining and exploiting natural resources. ), her mother was a great investor, successful on her own until she fell sick and died when her children were twelve. vesper is sixteen minutes younger than her twin brother, the assumed heir of the bang-heo corporate, until he passed away. she’s been close to her mother, but when she passed away, latched herself onto her brother -- the same using her as an outlet for his anger. her father was an enabler, and considered her not worthy of anything they had. now, he lives in despair knowing that she is owner of 49% of the company, and makes sure to remind her, every time they meet, she should’ve died in the place of her brother.

name your character’s favorite person and why.

romeo is her favorite person, no doubts. simply because he doesn’t expect things for her -- not the worst, like everyone, not the best. he simply takes her as she is and welcomes every nuance of her personality with a roll of his eyes and a laugh -- which warms her heart up. she had told him he is her favorite person ever, but she bets he doesn’t believe it.

what seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?

when she taught her brother how to french braid in one of her dolls, so he could do it on her. they were eight at that time and it was a simpler, happier time -- he sucked at first, but she was his biggest support system, and when he attempted on her, she couldn’t untangle her hair for a couple hours, but she loved anyway.

what is your character reluctant to tell people?

she basically doesn’t tell people anything about her life -- it’s something she doesn’t like to think about, remember about, talk about. the thing she is most reluctant to tell people, though, is that she had a twin brother, since that information would lead to other questions she would, absolutely, not answer.

what makes this character angry? what calms them?

she doesn’t have a short temper, basically because she heavily disassociates and looks for ways of distracting herself, but one thing that makes her absolutely livid is when people assume she had an easy life because of her social status -- and when people are condescending towards her. drinking calms her, numbs her, to be more specific -- but what really calms her is playing the violin or fencing.

who depends on your character? why?

unfortunately, for him, her father -- he depends on her to make any decision, business speaking. but then, anybody else depends on her, or so she thinks ( and hopes )

who does your character most want to please? why?

she has a soft spot for zen, so she obviously wants to please him, even though he runs away from her advances. justice can also be included in that list, because she feels like she disappoints him way too much, and has to make up for it, somehow. celeste also is in that list, because she knows too much and because she likes the girl, too.

how does your character really feel about sex?

sex is power -- she sees as that. vesper is very sexual, very open and liberating about sex, but because she sees it as a powerful weapon. she rarely is romantic about it, for its an outlet, something she enjoys and is comfortable with.

how does your character really feel about love? do they want it?

she has never had love in her life and she is in desperate need of it. every action of her says so, but she carefully conceals it -- knowing she won’t ever get it and will only end up hurt again.

what is your character’s most noticeable trait and most noticeable physical feature?

vesper is known for her exuding confidence, that is actually real and not only a bravado. she truly believes in herself to the point of arrogance -- and she is also known for that. physically, she is known for her height and sex appeal, she is sexy and holds herself well. besides, she really prides herself in her long and pretty black hair.

do you have any unique head canons for your character?

﹡ she’s ambidextrous, her brother broke two fingers of her left hand and she had learned how to use her right -- loves this ever since.

﹡ really hates tequila.

﹡ doesn’t really like big bodies of water, not that she hates it or is afraid, but it makes her really uncomfortable. also, doesn’t know how to swim.

﹡ insomniac, since she has pretty ugly nightmares about her brother ever since. sleeps with the help of pills or alcohol ( sadly, both, at times )

﹡ is allergic to bees, doesn’t like honey.

﹡ loves dogs very much, but knows she’s not responsible enough to own one.

﹡╱ PLOT SPECIFIC

how does your character feel about their major and school in general?

she’s very much satisfied with it. she has had classical instruction before, with her private tutors, so she finds is comfortably easy. she likes the school, it’s pretty far from home and pretty different, which is a plus.

what is your character’s plan for after graduation? does that scare them?

vesper doesn’t really have plans for it and it doesn’t scare her not even slightly. maybe she will do a specialization program to become a luthier, maybe join a company. she will still run her family’s business, but not stress much over it, since she doesn’t care.

what was your character’s relationship to manon and how exactly did they feel about her?

vesper had a closer to zero relationship with manon. she knew of her existence through her brother, one of her closest friends, and because of the fame she had going. vesper always believed they held manon in a too higher pedestal, and she was only yet another high school bully worshiped by many -- not deserving her real title; but beside that, vesper didn’t waste a single breath about her.

what is your character’s opinion on the pact as a whole? do they think they should just tell, are the willing to do what to take to keep other in to keep others in line, etc.

she thinks the pact was the dumbest thing ever done -- and probably the dumbest decision she made. vesper is willing to do what it takes to save herself from any kind of terrible situation this poorly action could lead them -- maybe even save some of those she likes the most. she sees too many flaws in their plan, but can’t tell without exposing how she knows the plan is flawed.

are there any secrets your character is scared the west bridge liars blog might leak?

she is not really afraid of spreading the “secrets” she has know, knowing that the truly secret she keeps only one person knows, and if anyone else gets to know, she will know who opened her mouth.

how is your character handling the stress of keeping the secret?

pretty well, wrapped in her satin robe, drinking rosé with some strawberries coated in chocolate, planning to murder anyone who actually outs their secret and expose them... she’s not above that, you know.

A crazy theory about The Path. SPOILERS GALORE.

I don’t think I’m the first to compare the Meyerist movement to the Theosophists. But having done some research into the history of that early 20th century occult esoteric movement I’ve noticed some really close parallels to the plot lines in The Path and , I believe it holds the key to the future of the series too. However I do NOT think the writers were going for direct correlation between the two.

So Occult, meaning unseen, is what the show is all about. Not just in the obvious sense either. There are undercurrents, spiritual , emotional and historical subtext in every scene. Influencing events.

I don’t intend to examine the immensely complicated history of Western Mysticism here but just to give overview of some of Theosophy’s main players over the years to illustrate how it may have influenced writing on the show.

I am aware that Meyerism is based on many different NRMs but Theosophy is the foundation stone of the modern New Age movement and as a result has had profound influence on anything touched by it. It was also heavily influenced by Buddist and Hindu mysticism. It is by far the most influential NRM currently in existence.

It is also a PRIME example of what happens to nearly every religion after the founder dies. Which is the foundation of The Path.

Russian born mystic and purported Clairvoyant Helena Blavatsky started the movement in 1870. The main principal of the movement is that certain people can achieve clairvoyance and access ancient hidden wisdom through a process of initiations, these are not achieved in one lifetime but over the course of many reincarnations on earth.

“Initiation is a concept in Theosophy that there are ten levels of spiritual development that beings who live on Earth can progress upward through. Within these levels, there are four basic levels of spiritual development that human beings on Earth progress through as they reincarnate, although evil acts may cause bad karma which may cause one to temporarily regress.”

So there is a ladder structure. Although its not the only religion to have one, it a fairly common initiation metaphor.

Anyway, After Blavasky died the movement was run by Annie Besant, an English social activist, and former Anglican Priest Charles Webster Leadbeater, who was also the founder of a movement called The Liberal Catholic Church.

A young Rudolf Steiner ( later founder of Anthroposophy) was then the secretary of the German branch.

Leadbeater was the closest to a traditional ‘Cult Leader’ out of the lot of them.

Leadbeater was accused of sexually abusing young boys in 1906 and resigned. Only to be reinstated by Annie Besant in 1907.

In India in 1909 Leadbeater “discovered” fourteen-year-old Jiddu Krishnamurti on the private beach attached to the headquarters at Adyar. Leadbeater believed Krishnamurti to be a prophet whose imminent appearance he and many Theosophists were expecting. There was a legal battle with the boys father over custody, with Leadbetter winning.

Later Krishnamurti disavowed the role that Leadbeater and other Theosophists expected him to fulfil. He disassociated himself from the Theosophical Society. Although he became a well known lecturer on New Age subjects ( some felt he was cashing in on his association with the Theosophists.) When interviewed as an adult about Leadbeater he said he would only say “That man was evil” and would say no more.

After disagreement about Leadbeater’s reinstatement and the adoption of Krishnamurti as a new prophet. Rudolf Steiner and most of the German and Austrian members split off in 1913 and formed the Anthroposophical Society. The latter remains active today ( Waldorf Schools, Biodynamic faming.)

Steiner remains unique among NRM founders in that he actively worked during his lifetime to prevent his movement becoming a dogma, encouraged change and denounced the formation of closed NRMs.

Depending on who you ask he was either a very highly functioning Schizophrenic, a genuine mystic, or perhaps a bit of both. What even his critics agree on is that he was at least not actively malicious and probably left the world a better place than he found it. The end of his life was marred by attacks from the National Socialists and his movement was outlawed under Hitler.

So obviously Steve could be a direct Paralel to Leadbeater and Cal to Krishnamurti . Although a pederast cult leader adopting a “ son” is sadly not a singular occurrence either ( ie David Berg and his unfortunate ‘Son’ who went on a killing spree.)

Eddie probably comparable to Rudof Steiner. In that, crazy or not, he will probably bring out the best the New Age has to offer and try his best not to let it become too ‘culty’.

Sarah could compare to Besant in that her faith wavered from totally secular to the chairperson of a religious cult. But her main love was of social activism and helping the less fortunate, although she did end up supporting a dubious moral character in Leadbeater.

So where, in my theory, does that leave the enigmatic, and most important, figure of founder and supposed prophet Helena Blavatsky? I suppose Steve could be a kind of composite of her and Leadbeater.

Or… And this is my theory… Steve might not actually be the founder of Meyerism.

Could there have been someone before him? A mysterious Blavatsky type figure from whence he learned his wisdom? Maybe he stole all his ideas from someone else? Or maybe he was initiated by the real founder.

It would make sense and bridge that gaping chasm between his supposed connection to The Light and his dark activites.

Hi, sorry. So I am new to the st/efvater world, and I've only read one of her books (raven boys), and like I see you posting stuff about her a lot, but only like little bits and pieces, and I feel like I'm missing something and don't understand what's going on cause I'm not really in the fandom; I've just read one book, and don't really know anything about her. I'm sorry, this is rambling mess, but if you could enlighten me a little bit I would appreciate it.

OK I took a while to respond and I’m gonna try to be objective and polite but there isn’t a whole lot of objective politeness in this soul of mine, but I will try.

Maggie St/efvater (I only spell it that way so it doesn’t show up in her tag and annoy people, I’ll just call her Maggie for the rest of this post) is this fairly popular YA author, and she wrote the Wolves of Mercy Falls series, the Scorpio Races, and the Raven Cycle. Her writing is very good (I have some bones to pick about it as a writer but mostly it’s pretty good) and the Raven Cycle in particular has gained a big fandom because it’s an excellent series. I guess you would know cause you’ve read TRB- the concept is unique, it has cool magic stuff, there’s fascinating character concepts, and the teenagers do a lot of realistic teenager stuff like being annoying and cursing and either doing their homework or not, etc. And if I haven’t made it abundantly clear with my posts, a lot of us in the fandom fell in love with the main characters for many reasons, but especially because they represent parts of ourselves that aren’t often represented. Abuse victims who don’t react in a Good Abuse Victim way, poor teenagers who scrape and claw to get out of their shitty towns, mentally ill kids who have ugly unpleasant symptoms, girls who are feminists but whose feminism is a little messy because they grow up in a terrible small town, etc.

Unfortunately, the development of the Raven Cycle fandom online, like the development of ANY goddamn fandom on the accursed Internet, led to some gross pockets of fandom. In the second book, an abusive character called Ka/vinsky shows up, and some heavy subtext suggests that he’s gay and into one of the main characters, Ronan. He’s absolutely awful and monstrous to Ronan and the others, but you know how fandom is, they started shipping it and being like “Ka/vinsky’s just a misunderstood cinnamon roll uwu” and generally being the worst about it. Additionally, some parts of fandom started hating on the two lower-class characters, Adam and Blue, for not always being sweet and nice about the class privilege of all their wealthy friends, and for reacting "badly” to literal abuse and sexism. so the fandom is a mess, yeah

In the second and third books, also, (spoiler alert I guess? I mean if you follow my blog you can’t avoid knowing this haha) it’s suggested and then made all but direct canon, that Ronan is gay and has a crush on Adam. So, like, everyone shipped it because they’re a great ship and it was pretty obvious it was gonna be made canon in book four.

But Maggie interacts a lot with the fandom online, and obviously the clashing of fandom issues like this with any author would lead to some mess, but the way she treated it was....... terrible. She would make jokes about Ronan being Gansey’s “dog” and things like that. She milked the whole “writing a gay character” thing for all it was worth, and would never really say “hey, Adam and Ronan are a romantic thing” but would hint at it constantly, which, if you don’t know, is agonizing to watch when you’re desperate for any representation of your identity. She eventually said “I realize you guys are used to being baited, so don’t worry, the ‘other kiss’ will be between the people you hope it’ll be between” or something like that. And she would talk about Ronan being gay, but never address whether Adam was bi, and god forbid those words were used in the books. In the fourth book, although they do actually kiss and presumably get together, they don’t talk about it, and they never use the words “gay” or “bisexual.” Her excuse was that she’s writing for a world without labels. Leaving aside that that’s bullshit and a straight* woman doesn’t get to say that when we are out here in a homophobic world and saying our labels out loud is a sign of pride, she actually didn’t write a world without labels. The aforementioned Ka/vinsky is constantly using homophobic slurs to describe Ronan, boys at the private school make homophobic jokes, Adam’s dad makes lowkey homophobic remarks, etc. So labels are OK if they’re nasty and negative and used against you, but you’re never allowed to say who you are out loud.

When she gets called out on this whole mess- or a number of other things**- her response is to block people, tell people “if you are hostile one more time you’ll be blocked,” to reply to private posts by teenagers, to sic her army of clueless fans on young LGBT mentally ill readers, to claim that she’s being bullied and attacked, to make vague posts talking about “callout culture” and how it’s mature to avoid “discourse,” etc. I talked a while back about how I’ve made several fully thought-out posts critiquing her, but when I sent her a polite ask about her next book, she replied linking me to one of my own joke posts about “hating” her, making it clear that she apparently has me down on some sort of list of haters or something. And at least she responded privately, so that her other fans didn’t attack me, which has happened to other younger fans before.

She claims to be an ally, but she only really wants the ally points. She’ll talk your ear off about how brave she is for “writing an on-page queer relationship” as a straight woman, but when actual queer teenagers critique her for the way she writes it, she throws a fit and absolutely refuses to listen. She doesn’t want to do the work.

Additionally, she is writing a follow-up series called “the dreamer trilogy” which she drops constant hints about on her social media. It will center on Ronan (naturally, because she’s admitted Ronan is her self-insert and has butchered his character development for the sake of giving him a life identical to hers and fulfilling her fantasies of driving fast cars 24/7 and being an asshole with no consequences) and she’s making it increasingly obvious that none of the other characters we all fell in love with will feature at all. And basically any plotllines we enjoyed, she scraps (often out of spite?), and any plotlines we hate, she makes sure to write tons about (I’m talking about the magical artifact community. No one cares. We started reading for the house of psychics and Glendower and Gwenllian, not the fucking Greenmantles and their haunted doll babies or whatever).

The fandom obviously responded with like “ooh! more Pynch!” because like, fandoms like ships, but ALSO BECAUSE some of us are goddamn LGBT teenagers who are starving for representation and we want to see that “on page queer relationship” she brags about. And yet, at every opportunity, she makes remarks like, “This won’t be a romance. It won’t be the cuddle trilogy. It won’t have relationship drama, that doesn’t interest me. It won’t be fanservice. It won’t be lovey dovey, it won’t be cute, etc.” No, I don’t want fanservice or drama or the cuddle trilogy. But given her history, when Maggie says shit like that, I get worried, as someone who’s been baited a thousand times before. Doesn’t anyone see how awful it is to dangle representation like this? To say “ooh, look, someone who has the same identity as you? Juuuust kidding I’m not writing about it?” She can’t just say what we want to hear, which is “Adam will be there. I’ll say the word gay. I’ll say the word bisexual. Their relationship will be treated as real as Blue and Gansey’s or as any other relationship I write. Not the main focus of the plot, but THERE.” Because she’s not GOING to do any of those things, because writing actual gay relationships makes her uncomfortable. But she can’t say that or she’ll lose her sales.

And when she says all this bullshit about “I won’t write a romance” she gets so much FUCKING praise from her straight readers who think she’s the sun and fucking stars because their shit brand of feminism thinks all romances are equal and romance is insipid drivel and that a feminist book, apparently, is one token white girl who has a pink switchblade being sort-of in the background of a bunch of rich boys fucking around. I’m not saying I didn’t like that very book and that I don’t love that girl and her switchblade, but Maggie has to actually LEARN and IMPROVE and not go backwards. If she wants all this credit for gay representation, she has to actually write gay representation. And if not, I’m not congratulating her for “not writing relationship drama!!!!” because all that says to me is “yuck, I’m not writing gay stuff.” She says “relationship drama doesn’t interest me” and yet she wrote pages upon pages of Blue’s mother making out with a hit man. Relationship drama sure does seem to interest her. This isn’t her taking a Stand against romance, it’s her finding a way to make homophobia seem cool and progressive.

So yeah. That’s why she pisses me off.

*I know I know, “she’s never said her sexuality! How can you call her straight?” On the off chance she’s bisexual (she’s married to a man with kids), that doesn’t excuse her homophobic bullshit. She’s acting like an asshole straight person so yeah I’m gonna call her straight.

**Here are some other problems she’s been called out for and her bullshit reactions:

-Blue is basically the only female character and has no female friends or anything. Maggie says “well none of them had friends!” OK so why isn’t there another girl in the group? Why is her family the only other women who have page time besides villains and other relatives of main characters?

-Gansey gives Adam a lot of grief for not being fond of Gansey’s wealth, but Adam never makes Gansey apologize for blaming Adam for the abuse he endured? Maggie doesn’t have a comment on this, I don’t think.

-In book four, Ronan and Adam make racist jokes at the expense of the One (1) character of color, Henry Cheng. Maggie didn’t address this outright because “spoilers” but made a post about it saying that it wasn’t meant to be a racist joke, it was a throwback to some random joke from book one, and any good reader would know that.

-Blue isn’t a very intersectional feminist, which is fine, but it’s never really addressed, apparently because “all the characters are damn fools!” Who never get any character development except for Adam whose development essentially consists of “I stopped being prejudiced against the rich!” (and lots of other personal things but still)

Yeah, that’s about all I can think of. This didn’t end up being very neutral but I have class in 10 minutes and yeah this is hella long I just wanted to get it all out. I hope I don’t get shit for this, but you know what, anons? Go ahead, send me stuff saying I’m a nasty bitch and should stay away from fandom for criticizing poor Maggie. I don’t even care.

I was surprised because Lynn actually met with me for an hour and a half which has literally never happened. And we spent the entire hour and a half essentially talking about my options. When I got there she asked how my trip was after apologizing for being late. I told her it was good and I asked her what she thought of be more chill and she said that she actually didn’t get to see it because it was fully sold out and that she had her through her daughters friends that it was doing really well but it had a terrible score and I explained that it was definitely kind of cheesy and someways it was a good show but definitely not one that I was insisting my husband go see with me if it went on tour. I explained that I thought Will did an incredible job in the role and she asked if it was similar dear Evan Hansen and I said it was more comparable to Heathers in this and thought it was sort of an unrealistic view on teenagers were as dear Evan Hansen is obviously pretty realistic and she said that made perfect sense and I said the music was definitely kind of unique in the sense that it was kind of catchy at times but also kind of annoying sounding in some and like it’s definitely fun to sing along to Michael in the bathroom. I told her about how I had also seem dear Evan Hansen and she was like really and I was like yeah I really wanted to see Andrew in the role and she didn’t know who Andrea was and I was like oh my God how do you not know he’s literally 16 and he’s incredible and I explained that I had specifically wanted to see the show with him in it because he’s Evan and he’s so young and she was like wow did he go to a theater school or something and I said no he actually went to a private school on Long Island and she said she would need to look them up and she asked if Mallory was on for Zoe now and I said yes and she did really incredible too and she said that Mallory had done some sort of camp things with her daughter at one point and she was thinking they were around the same age and I said that Mallory I think is 18 because she started the show right out of high school so it is cool to see the show with two teenagers actually playing the teenagers and I told her that I sat front row and it was sort of my celebrating passing my exam which she clapped and was like yay. I said I was just glad to have it behind me and then I told her about Making a friend at the conference and seeing my old roommate and seeing my family and how that had gone. And then I told her about how I got back and I had told Chris and Peggy that I would do an assessment for a treatment center and so I called and did the assessment and I had really thought they were going to recommend IOP but then they actually recommended inpatient and then I started crying with Lynn like many tears crying ugly crying lip quivering crying and I think she was just kind of taken back because she hadn’t really expected such and go that way either and I explained how I didn’t know how I would tell my clients about me needing to leave and she basically said that it’s not any of their business was going on with me and that personal life should be kept separate from work and that I can easily just say I’m getting surgery and I was like honestly Lynn what happens when they’re like oh what kind of surgery because I have tons of clients who are doctors and nurses and she was like first of all I don’t think that many of your clients are that nosy but second mall you could just say you know I don’t really want to discuss all the details I’d much rather we be talking about you right now this is your time or I don’t really wanna get into all of that but right now we have this time and I’m more concerned about you which honestly does feel like a decent response but I was like what if they assume that I’m going to treatment or they directly ask me if I’m going and basically she was like then let them assume but you know how to dodge bullets and you can always say that you’re not comfortable discussing anything or you could say no more or you could even just say yes. We talked about my options and I told her my weight and I told her about the Ohio clinic and basically she was really pro that one because she was like honestly you’re very intellectual and I think doing something that is geared towards that would be better for you and would actually go along better with EMD are in the sense that we aren’t necessarily trying to change your perfectionistic tendencies as much as we are learning to be OK with the alternative and recognizing those tendencies but also recognizing that you don’t have to be perfect even though that is your natural inclination and she basically said like if you compare this to an addict you know I might need to be on a structured meal plan for the rest of my life and that’s OK because if that’s what keeps me healthy and in recovery you know that’s like the alcoholic who maintains their sobriety because she was like you know essentially if you skip meals here and there it’s kind of like the alcoholic who thinks they can get away with just having one drink and maybe you need that kind of structured plan around food and that’s OK and I explained that that’s essentially what the Ohio clinic preaches and she was like I really like everything you said about that clinic so far and I said I did to you and she talked about how I need to do something different because I can’t keep doing the same old and she said she would be willing to talk to Peggy about trying to do something to make me maintain enough to where I could go to the Ohio clinic in May and she was like would you be willing to try to be gaining at least the 1 pound a week and I was like by the time that heads then I’d be at a healthy weight and then insurance isn’t even going to cover me at the partial hospitalization level which is what that would fall under for insurance. She said dammit and I was like yeah unfortunately insurance is all about Wiecking and numbers and she asked if that was my impression was about to you and I was like I mean yeah but that’s not necessarily how they preach it because I think that they would say it’s about other things to you and she was like well I mean I don’t know because looking at all these things I mean is treatment trying to address your perfectionism and your need for control and getting to the root of the problem and I was like they would say so but ultimately it’s a bubble and there’s only so much you can do in the bubble and I was like you know I remember a time in my life when I think that probably would’ve been helpful because it’s like you know Sunday him to be going out to brunch with someone and I can recall time in my life I would’ve totally opted out of brunch because I knew that would mean that I have to eat but I’m not going to so I’m gonna go to this restaurant and eat brunch like a normal human and I’m not gonna have a huge breakdown and I remember a time in my life when that totally would cause a breakdown but at this point it’s not in so it’s like if I am impatient essentially I would be practicing moments like that but I can already do that was the hard part for me is just the every day how do you actually make yourself eat like a normal person when you’re busy with every day life because honestly I was like I hate eating I would rather avoid it altogether and just ignore it and of course then I’m crying and I was like honestly I know this sounds bad but like I loved being at that conference last week and not having to eat all of those snacks and having breaks between food because I genuinely do feel so much better when I’m not eating and I get that that logically sounds terrible and every anorexic seems to think that they are fine and it’s not a big deal and I was like honestly I just wish that you would never noticed I was losing weight and I wish that I’ve never had to see Peggy and I wish that my husband hadn’t freaked out and that Peggy hadn’t pushed treatment and I just wish everyone would ignore everything and just leave me alone and let me be because I was feeling OK. She brought up not repeating the exact same things over and over and how we see them a lot with substance abuse or people go to the same rehab over and over with for success rate and I was like well honestly their argument would be that I’ve never been impatient and she was like wait you haven’t and I was like now I did IOP and she was like I’ve been thinking this whole time that you already have been impatient and I was like no it was a hospital program but it was IOP and she was like really I guess I was just thinking hospital automatically inpatient and I was like nope I would wake up skip breakfast and work at a camp where I eat an apple or peach every day for lunch and then go to IOP from four to 8 o’clock Monday through Friday. She said that did change things in her perspective but she was still leaning towards thinking that the Ohio clinic was a better option for me. She also pointed out that I was acting like I was already defeated and that everything was already completely out of control and too late and I didn’t really say anything I just kind of sat there and cried while she started talking about how you know it’s OK if I’m at a point where the eating disorder has taken a life of its own and I need that type of setting in order to get back to a place where I can do that other work like with the EMD ER because she talked about how like ultimately some of those things with EMD are on our changing a lot of things and I have made a lot of progress especially with my parents and she sees the whole group therapy would sort of be a waste and some of that aspect because I have done so much work and she can understand why I am dreading it but also that I’m not at a point where they are shipping me off tomorrow and she was like realistically if you were to gain 3 pounds by the next time you see Peggy and then you ask her to give you one more week because that’s like when your parents are coming anyway and then you gain another 3 pounds then nobody’s gonna be pushing you to go to treatment right because then you can keep trying to get better and not have to go and I didn’t really say anything and she was like unless if you feel like you’re at the point we can’t do that and I was like I mean I would love to say that I could but honestly that’s just so much food and that’s like you know I’ve been saying this for weeks now and obviously it’s been like 2 1/2 months and I haven’t gained any weight anything my weight has just overall trend downward and also I had pointed out about inpatient being a place of absolute losing all control which is also an element that’s different than what I’ve had before because I’ve never been in that type of setting but then I started crying and talking about how it would be a minimum of 45 days and I wouldn’t have my phone or my email and I would be able to earn the privilege of talking to my husband 15 minutes on the landline a day and then my parents would definitely have to know and I would have to have that conversation with them before they leave. I mentioned how it feels hopeless when thinking about the fact that like the two biggest predictors of poor outcomes with recovery are perfectionism and obsessive compulsive traits and obviously that’s me and I told her about long-term studies and how it’s like 60 something percent of people with anorexia get better at the 22 year follow-up and she was like 60 something percent is pretty good and I was like after 22 years I’m not trying to be doing this for 22 years and she was like what about the other people and I was like there’s like 30 something percent I get better soon and she was like I’m fortunately I don’t know what the right answer is for you I know you need something but I want you to be in that 30% and I believe you can be in that 30% but it doesn’t matter if I believe it or Peggy believes it it needs to be you who believes it but we are all in your corner rooting for you and we want to see you get better. She pointed out that her goal for me was obviously to address the perfectionism I need for control but she’s not an expert in this and it sounds like everyone’s main concern currently is the weight gain and if that needs to be the priority then maybe I do need to be inpatient first in order to do some of this other work. I told her about how my husband had responded when I told him about the recommendation and how It’s sort of is that like wounded puppy sort of situation where initially he had been so angry at me mentioning the Ohio clinic and wanting him to takeoff work and then all of a sudden once he saw how upset I was it’s like a 180 on what are we gonna do you and maybe I could takeoff work and if I lose my job it’s fine and it’s like I don’t want to put them in a position where he loses his job for me and I mean I can’t guarantee that the Ohio clinic would be the fix that I’m hoping it would be so it’s like I especially wouldn’t want to do that and make him lose his job and may not even find it to be terribly effective. We talked about and patient being affective for waking but how exhausting it feels even think about doing a stupid process group ride talk for an hour with a group of other people about body image or try to make friends with other people who are sick and struggling because I don’t even really want other recovery friends anymore because they aren’t usually even capable of being good friends and it’s not their fault but they are sick and because of that they aren’t usually capable of being supportive and being there for you and teaching you how to be normal or be a regular friend. We talked about Laura Hill and how much I love her and how she talks about a very structured approach and working with your temperament and Lynn was like I watch her Ted talk and I was like I sent it to you and she was like really it must’ve gotten lost with my other emails and I was like maybe so then she was like well I’m going to want it and I was like OK and I talked about how I had met Laura and talk to her last year at a conference and how it had been really helpful because she talked about what the research shows about my biology and how like my insula not responding right could be responsible for why ended up with the phobia as a kid and about like something like low central coherence and how I struggle to see the big picture and I was like you know how I typically tend to only see like one detail and end up really focused in on it even if it’s completely a relevant and she was like yes and I was like we know that biologically people that are anorexic are typically wired that way where they struggle to see the big picture because of their low central coherence. Also I couldn’t help but laugh because I brought up the cost of treatment and Lynn fucking saysyou have the money. Lol she’s not wrong but still I’m not interested in spending 8k on Treatment. We also talked about my parents briefly and how they are completelyaloof and she mentioned Maslow hierarchy of needs and how my parents never made it to the top.
