Nothing bugs me more than when people online claim that everybody aged faster in the past, and then they post a bunch of old pictures of completely normal looking 20 somethings who are just wearing clothes and hairstyles that we now associate with old people.

#history #20th century #19th century #decade: 1920s #1970s #decade 1950s #history of photography #obviously there is some truth in this phenomenon once you reach your 40s and 50s #but young people in the past didn’t age that much quicker than young people now #at least not to an exceptional degree #obviously some stresses like constant smoking or warfare could heap a lot of years onto a 20 something face #but you can find people in the present who look way older than they are too #there is definitely also some selection bias at play #the idea that every 30 year old looked 50 in the early 20th century is hyperbolic and kinda absurd
