#obviously my interpretation of the dehtronement isn't the only one and i think there's more to it from dream's perspective to some extent

“the man with the axe” by lorde is simply a c!dnf song and im gonna write a little bit of analysis about it. let’s get into it with some verse by verse analysis. (tw derealization, dream-reality confusion)
If I had to break it down I'd say it's the way you love to dance Moving the furniture when my back is turned A flick of the lights and the world falls away And your office job, and your silver hair But our shapes in the dark are the reason I've stayed for all these years
george is in love with the old version of dream, the one who cared for the little things and would do little things for him. he wants to get caught up in that past, the one that he revisits in his dreams. but those times are gone. dream has put his pursuit of power above his love for his friends. george wants to grasp onto that, even after everything, and chooses to remember the good
I thought I was a genius But now I'm twenty two And it's starting to feel like all I know how to do is Put on a suit and take it away With my fistful of tunes that it's painful to play Fingernail worlds, like favorite seashells They fill up my nights and then they float away
at one point, george was on top of the world. he was the king and he was the VP of a country he founded with quackity. he was powerful. but now he’s older and that power has crumbled through his fingers. sure, he has kinoko but george doesn’t seem to care as much about it as his former home. he’s still caught up in the past and is just going through the motions at this point. but, in his dreams, he can have the world that he wants. he sleeps and he’s transported to a world where he’s happy for the most part, a world where he gets what he wants
I've got hundreds of gowns, I've got paintings in frames And a throat that fills with panic every festival day Dutifully falling apart for the princess of Norway
george does have a lot still. he has a god at his beck and call. but that’s not what he wants, not really. he wants the old dream. the real dream. and he’s falling apart. his dreams are blending with what’s real and he can’t tell things apart anymore. the others are starting to notice too
But you with your doll's lashes, your infinite T-shirts I should've known when your favorite record Was the same as my father's, you'd take me down
obviously the original song is about an older man, which isn’t applicable here, but this is still interesting if you spin it a different way, focusing on it in terms of power instead. george saw dream’s riches and power. maybe he has some regrets in not seeing him as he fell into that part of himself, seeking more and more at the cost of his relationships on the server, including his relationship with george. if george or sapnap had caught dream slipping into that mindset before he was too far gone, maybe they could have stopped him. i think george might regret this
I guess I'll always be this way Swallowed up by the words and halfway to space But there by the fire, you offered your hand And as I took it, I loved you, the boy with the plan
george doesn’t hope anymore. he’s given up and surrendered to the dreams that are taking over him. he’s fine being spacey and lost because he’s happy to live in his dreams rather than reality. while he’s asleep, he can love dream properly. he doesn’t have to face the reality of who he became. he can pretend that dreamxd is the man he once loved and live out better days, remembered when dream’s ambition was more altruistic, when the three of them built the community house together and hoped for a great future
You felled me clean as a pine The man with the axe and the look in his eyes We've been through so many hard times I'm writin' a love song for you, baby
in the end, the dethronement was the end for their relationship. dream stripped george of his power (well, faux power but i don’t think george fully realized that at the time) and then threatened his new country mere days later. the man with the axe (i mean dream and axe symbolism literally go hand in hand) threw out what they had because george became more of a nuisance for him than useful when he sided with quackity and created another country, one that was certainly more linked to l’manburg than the greater smp. and even after all of that, george still loves him. he longs for this love that he can’t have anymore because they’re too broken to ever piece back together
