Yes he gets stabbed in battle but he gets to die just as Arthur, not as king, but as Merlin’s best friend

Despite all the friends they’ve made and Arthur marrying Gwen, when Arthur dies it’s just him and Merlin, together in a field by the water, curled together on the ground

Arthur gets to die cradled and loved and happy, with his destiny, his second half, by his side

And he doesn’t seem to wish for anything more
