If ever a children's book should come with a warning, it's probably the subversively hilarious "That Pest Jonathan" (1970) by William Cole. While I found it utterly delightful as a kid, this book about an extraordinarily naughty child is the antithesis of current popular attitudes. 📚📗📙 From the admission that Jonathan "plays with matches", to bluntly referring to him as a pest, to parents who finally appeal to a doctor to address their degenerate son's behaviour, this is an over-the-top, unapologetically mischievous romp. And the fantastic Tomi Ungerer's droll illustrations just highlight the zany misbehaviour!
