"Dancing" by Betsy · obli · Elizabeth Humfreys
DV:
Even after a decade, Betsy's online presence remains at best enigmatic - her YouTube page not only directs you to a lapsed personal site, but to Vine. Her songs occasionally pop up in various recommendations, but more often I discover them when I think to actively look her up. This year she's dropped, without fanfare: a trance remix of a single from her 2017 self-titled, a feature on a beachy house track by Holiday87 and The Knocks, and this, which is credited as a solo track or her and one of the producers or her and both of them, depending on where you look.
This relative invisibility matters because I just want more of Betsy, and I want to know when and how I can hear more of her, and the way Betsy's work seems to resist promotion or visibility makes this maddeningly difficult (her mononym does not help, admittedly.) "Dancing" may not be an instant classic, but it's filled with neat touches in the production - percussion flourishes, vocal effects like bubbles popping, a strong sense of dynamics - that make it compelling. And the song punches way above its weight class because this isn't just any singer, it's Betsy. With her voice irresistible, full of pain and power, lush and overwhelming. No one else sounds quite like her, and each time we hear from her it seems like discovering a treasure all over again. I'm sure there must be a better way to run a career, and I'm sure there are reasons why hers looks like this. But in the end I'll take what I can get.
MG:
Well, this is children's music, which, admittedly, is hard to reliably discover outside of massive hits and tie-in soundtracks. I don't mean to heap more on the plates of over-extended and well-meaning parents but, truthfully, I also think more could be done to make non-branded children's music accessible to its audience. I also think more children's music could be about, like, anything other than dancing, but I spend enough time around kids to know they really do a lot of dancing and they need a lot of dancing songs. To that end, "Dancing" is wonderful. Its lyrics are instructive and sensitive listeners will intuit the connection between movement and the release of tender emotions. It feels like there's a missed opportunity for Bleep or some arm of NTS to host a kid's mix dance hour because, wow, how glorious would "Dancing" be as the shimmering denouement of 56 minutes of wiggling?

Silly Game Time: What was the most recent internet search you're comfortable with sharing?
Slickensides! Slickensides are rock races that are polished smooth by rubbing against another rock at a fault line (source of earthquakes). We found one on our field trip (and I looked them up online to see what other look like).
Tumblr media
This polished surface was so smooth and hard that it felt like porcelain. It's just crazy to think that this was caused by rocks rubbing against rocks.

was just rereading blue lock and I am at bastard vs manshine fight and I just realised just how much better chris prince is at, you know, BEING A COACH.
noel noa just sat there in his spinny chair when isagi asked for advice and said about two sentences in total, but chris prince is giving them all a personalized training regime and an actual plan to follow to achieve their ideal version of a footballer.
I've seen spoilers of the recent chapter only to realise that noel gets even worse so, chris prince, youre doing great, keep it up 👍

Okay the angst of batkids worrying about Bruce finding out about things they think he will hate but when it happens, it Bruce finding out and going to say something only to be undercut by Alfred telling a story of Bruce doing something similar.
