This urban bolthole will feature a mix of short-stay rooms and suites and long-stay residences, alongside eight F&B outlets and a wellness offering. A little further afield, the long-awaited Herzog & de Meuron-designed M+ building in West Kowloon Cultural District is set to open its doors, and visitors will finally be able to set foot in one of the world’s best museums for modern and contemporary art.

Copenhagen The Danish capital has become a mecca for foodies, but there’s lots happening in Copenhagen this year that isn’t related to gastronomy (unless you have a taste for bamboo). The Copenhagen Zoo will this year welcome a duo of pandas to its custom-built Panda House, a yin-yang shaped enclosure that’s being designed by starchitect Bjarke Ingels, who worked on the newly reopened Noma. He’s also involved in another big-ticket opening across town, an ambitious green project called Copenhill that will be a sustainable waste-to-energy plant, but also include a rooftop artificial ski slope and the world’s tallest climbing wall. Reinvention is truly the name of the game in Copenhagen, where Enigma, a “museum of communication”, will be fully unveiled since its move into a shared post-office space. Originally an archive featuring artefacts like old telephones, it’s now an institution that explores the meaning of digital communication through formats ranging from intellectual debates to robot rentals for kids. Of course, don’t forget to put Noma 2.0 on your list, too.

Sharjah The emirate just 20 minutes from Dubai is hosting the inaugural Sharjah Architecture Triennial come November through February of 2020, with claims to be “first major platform for architecture and urbanism in the Middle East, North and East Africa, and South and Southeast Asia”. If you can’t wait that long, from 7 March till 10 June the Sharjah Biennial is exploring the theme of producing art in an era of fake news. This month, Sharjah is hosting the IWAS World Games, one of the most important qualifier events in the run-up to the Paralympics. The hospitality scene is also ramping up – recent launches include the stunning luxury conservation project Al Bait and the safari-style eco-lodge Kingfisher Lodge, with two more major new builds set for completion this year: Al Badayer Oasis, situated some 40 minutes from the city centre, is described as a luxury desert adventure, while Fossil Rock Lodge is set in an archaeologically significant area for adventure and exploration.

Berlin The city is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall on November 9, and there will be a plethora of events in the run-up to that date, from historical exhibitions to artistic interpretations and of course, parties that celebrate nothing more than the spirit of freedom since the symbolic structure fell. While the opening Bauhaus Festival was last month, there are plenty of other happenings throughout the year that will celebrate the German university that had such an enduring global influence on art and architecture. The Humboldt Forum is also opening in the reconstructed Berlin Palace right in the heart of the city, and will house the Ethnological Museum of Berlin and the Museum of Asian Art. Touted as the German equivalent of the British Museum, it will be an important addition to Berlin’s already thriving cultural scene, and will focus on showcasing Berlin’s role in the world arena.

Los Angeles The museum on the tip of everyone’s lips this year in L.A will be the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, paying homage to the industry this city is best known for: filmmaking. Pritzker Prize winner Renzo Piano has the honour of designing the structure, which will be unveiled in late 2019, and debut exhibitions will include a retrospective of the work of Hayao Miyazaki, the Japanese filmmaker behind Totoro and Spirited Away. The hotel scene is also hot – the Park Hyatt is landing in DTLA, while Palihotel opened a hotel in Culver City last month and will add a boutique property in hipster Silverlake later this spring. On the food front, mod-Mex maestro and Final Table judge Enrique Olvera, whose restaurant Pujol is number 20 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, is introducing his first West coast restaurant this summer in the Arts District.

Animal Kingdom Part 1: Overlooked Adventure

When I went to Disney World in 2014, Animal Kingdom was our first stop.  The last of the four parks to be built, Animal Kingdom had a reputation of being a glorified zoo.  This was also the one I was least excited about.  While the park features live animals and messages about conservation, Animal Kingdom also houses some of the best attractions in Disney World. It wasn’t my favorite park (it would be very difficult to beat Epcot), but I really appreciate the unique experiences Animal Kingdom offers, and I would look forward to returning in the future.

Opening in April 22, 1998, Animal Kingdom is isolated from the rest of the parks in order to minimize the disruptions to the animals.  As you walk past the gate and enter the Oasis, you’ll find yourself feeling lost.  When you enter the other three parks, their iconic monuments (the castle, Epcot globe, Sorcerer’s hat) are visible and provide a point of reference.  Here in Animal Kingdom, the idea is to get lost in the adventure, like you would if you were to explore the jungles of Africa or Asia.  Waterfalls, trees, and bridges welcome you.  Rather than be tied down by a checklist, the intention is to pick a path and see where it led.

Only after crossing the bridge to Discovery Island do you finally see Animal Kingdom’s symbol: The Tree of Life.  Discovery Island is the central hub that connects the other lands.  The storyline for Discovery Island is that there once was a great storm in ancient times, flooding the world.  This brought people from all across the world to this island, and along with them came their animals and cultures.  The architecture of the shops is a fusion of Caribbean, Australian, and Pacific island influence.  Inside the shops, the walls tell the story of this flood.  When the flood receded, most people left.  But left behind was a fusion culture that became Discovery Island. These islanders are also responsible for the carvings on the Tree of Life.

From there, you can travel to Asia or Africa or a land of dinosaurs.  To travel to another land, you’ll need to cross a bridge.  This fits the theme of bridging the gaps between all these diverse lands/cultures and promoting unity.  In Africa, you can go on Animal Kingdom’s signature ride, the Kilimanjaro Safari.  Unlike Jungle Cruise, these animals are real.  You can also learn about different animals and conservation.  While this is may feel like a zoo, Disney has gone through many lengths to make this experience as magical and educational as possible.  Asia is home to two of Animal Kingdom’s most popular attractions: Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids.  It’s also the location of their night show, Rivers of Light. I’ll talk more about those later.  Dinoland is geared more towards children.  Explore fossils, play carnival games, or check out the Dinosaur ride (Orlando’s equivalent of Indiana Jones).  Animal Kingdom’s newest addition is Pandora, the world of Avatar.  Their signature ride, Flight of Passage, remains one of the most popular attractions in Disney World.

An interesting note about Animal Kingdom: it’s the only Disney park where the restrooms have doors. Think about it: When you go to the restroom in Adventureland or in Tomorrowland, there’s no doors at the front you’d need to pull.  You can walk straight inside.  Animal Kingdom is the exception, and this is designed in case of an animal escape.  In case of an emergency, all restrooms, shops, restaurants and other buildings provide safe refuge for guests.  In fact, there’s enough space to safely house everyone in the park.  Thankfully, this kind of incident has not happened, but that’s an amazing foresight to ensure the safety of Disney’s guests and cast members.

Animal Kingdom is more than just a zoo or a sermon on conservation.  It’s more than the sum of its rides and shows.  Buried deep beneath the trees is an adventure full of rich details and interesting stories.  Most people will rush past to get to Expedition Everest or the Safari.  If you take the time to explore the details, you might be surprised by the experience your path leads to.

Exploring the Wild

If you've ever gone to Disney's Animal Kingdom on vacation, odds are that you've heard its a "half day park." As a seasoned explorer, I'm here to tell you it is far from that. Here's the best way to experience this awesome park.

On my College Program, I was lucky enough to have DAK as my home park. This meant that I got to know the ins and outs of what made Animal Kingdom the wildest park this side of the Mississippi. From going on an expedition to the peak of Mount Everest to going on a safari on the African savannah, Animal Kingdom has a lot of story to tell if you're willing to listen.

THE OASIS

Start your morning off right with a morning welcome from Devine, a magical creature that lives in The Oasis. She's a sentient plant that dazzles park goers as they walk by. You have to keep an eye out for her as most don't even see her blending into the surrounding foliage. Be on the look out for different animals such as the babirusa and military macaws as you make your way to to the top of the bridge looking into Discovery Island.

DISCOVERY ISLAND

Discovery Island is reminiscent of a tropical village hidden deep within a jungle. Here you can become a Wilderness Explorer just like Russell from the Disney Pixar movie UP. It's a free scavenger hunt for kids and grown ups alike! Once you gain all the badges, you become a Senior Wilderness Explorer! On the island, you can find a number of animals all around the 145 foot tall baobab tree known as the Tree of Life. Underneath, you can become as small as an insect in "it's tough to be a bug", a mix of 3D animation and animatronics. You can head over to Creature Comforts, the local coffee shop that proudly brews Starbucks coffee for a quick pick me up to get your morning going. Later in the night, come back to the island to watch the Tree of Life awakening, where the fireflies make the tree's carvings come to life right before your eyes.

Hungry? There's plenty of places to eat on Discovery Island. Pizza-fari, Flame Tree Barbecue, and Tiffin's are good places to grab a bite. And if you're looking for a relaxing drink with friends or someone you love, try the new Nomad Lounge right next to Tiffin's.

PANDORA

Now that the ACE team has stated letting humans of earth travel light-years away to Pandora, its time to get to know the Navi, up close and personal! The floating mountains, the giant plants, and the strange animals, Pandora is just what any explorer would want!

Welcome to the Valley of Mo’Ara. Take a trip down the river in Navi River Journey and meet the Shaman of Songs as she sings positive energies out into the forest. Then, if you’re brave enough, take on your OWN Navi and climb on a Banshee to fly all over the moon, experiencing all of what Pandora has to offer.

Don’t forget to snag something exotic to eat at Satu’li Canteen or adopt your own Banshee at Windtraders!

 AFRICA

If you have kept walking, you're crossing the bridge into Harambe, a South African village with lively characters and sweet smells everywhere. Here you can venture over to the Port of Harambe and see "The Festival of the Lion King" which is one of Disney's best stage productions. It's a live musical revue of songs from The Lion King. There's acrobatics, aerial performances, and even a bit of pyrotechnics. Do not miss this show!

Looking for animals? Hop on over to Kilimanjaro Safari's and take on the African Savanah. Make sure your camera is out, you never know what animal you're going to come across. If you didn't see enough, take to the Gorilla Falls Trail which is right next to the exit of the Safari. You'll come across dozens of animals and come face to face with a gorilla or two!

Tusker House is known for its resident duck, Donald! He's there to share his breakfast with you in the morning so make sure you get a reservation!

RAFIKI'S PLANET WATCH

Board a train to Rafiki's Planet Watch, a five minute train ride that takes you from Africa to an animal hospital and petting zoo. Here is where you can meet the famous baboon himself, pet a goat, and meet some really interesting animals the care givers have out for you to learn about. Don't forget to say hi to Doc McStuffins! She loves hanging out making sure all of the animals are doing okay!

ASIA

Welcome to Anadapur! In this hustling village, you can find the river bank of the Kali River where you can board a raft to take on the rapids! It's a quick ride to get you called off on those hot summer days. Dry off by taking a walk on the wild side in the Maharajah Jungle Trek where you can get up close and personal with bats, tigers, and birds in an aviary. It will make you feel like you're no longer in a theme park but somewhere in jungle ruins.

Once you've taken your journey though the trek, it's time to face the Yeti on Expedition Everest. On a routine trip up to base camp on the mountain side, things take a backwards turn when your train cart gets derailed and sends you plummeting into total darkness. When your train finally catches back onto the track, the Yeti is right there to swing at you! Feel free to kiss the ground once you arrive back at Anadapur.

When the lights go down the river shines bright! Rivers of Light is held in the stadium that overlooks the water. This magical pageantry of music, lights, and magic give the entire family something to smile at.

Before you head down the Highway to Diggs County, stop at the theater and get reacquainted with your favorite fish friends. Finding Nemo: The Musical is one of the cutest shows and noteworthy songs in all over the Disney Parks. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the cool air conditioning.

DINOLAND U.S.A.

When you've hit Route 498 be sure to stop at Hester and Lester's Din-o-rama! It's a road side attraction to bring tourists into the area. With fun carnival games to a wild mouse ride called Prime-eval-whirl, there's something for everyone there. Be sure to head over to the Dino Institute to meet Donald and Dino Sue! There's also Time Rovers that send you back in time on Dinosaur: Race to Extinction. Don't worry. I think Dr. Beaker has finally been stopped sending people seconds before the meteor hits earth.

TLDR;

With some much more to see and do, Disney's Animal Kingdom is no longer a "half day park." These are just the HIGHLIGHTS of an amazing park, and I urge you to go. It's not just a zoo, its a theme park!
