Oakley nods his head and avoids saying what initially crosses his mind at her words -- why not just ask. It’s a simplistic approach to what he’s sure is a complicated dynamic, which family so often were. Over time, he’s come to see why it’s easier to elicit the assistance of a stranger like him in matters like this. 

It certainly helped that it also kept the lights on. 

“I’ll certainly do my best to get to the bottom of it.” That isn’t so much a sales pitch of himself but rather an earnest guarantee. “Can you tell me a little more about them?”
