On the Names of the Antediluvians

So many of the Antediluvians are unnamed, with most of them being referred to as "(Clan) Antediluvian", [Clan], or simply with a nickname based off their their clan name, their actual names are unknown and I've always thought this was interesting. A few of them DO have names or theorized names.

I'm writing a fic that takes place during the First City, so I've given all of the unnamed Antediluvians names. This will be a masterpost of the names and the meanings of the names of the Antediluvians, where I link to the individual posts on each of their names. With the already named Antediluvians (with one exception), I will do my best to track down the meaning of their names.

Ninsun, the Visage of Patterns.

Oracles, awakened after the creation of the world, are technically the youngest of angels and demons. But that's not really important… What is important is that they were tasked with monitoring every change and predicting the processes so that the world would continue to function well. They had no other responsibilities. Each watched the process under his control, looked into the future, noted variants of development, passed them on to the Vigil, and the latter, in a spiral, onward. When the Vigil gave an answer, the Oracles acted in accordance with the instructions. It was all pretty simple, until the Oracles learned that the fate of the entire world would depend on the answer to one question. And then they were forbidden to communicate with anyone but the Vigil. Not at all. Not even the other Oracles. Not allowed. The Edict of Silence was issued. The Oracles were cut off from all society, they had power, they had knowledge, but they were completely constrained. And they were afraid. This led to the Rebellion of some of them.

Desser was no exception. Before the Fall, his job was to keep an eye out for night thunderstorms, so a lot of the time he just sat around doing nothing. No, of course he found something to do. He honed his poetic skills, played with words, looked where he shouldn't have, and sneaked away from the Vigil into the larger world. And with each passing day, doubt and hatred grew stronger in him. At first a timid uncertainty, a disagreement, and then… then the purest heretical hatred of the Gyre for what she had done to him, to his fellow Visage members, how cruelly she had treated her own House. He did not hesitate to join the Rebellion, driven by these feelings. He wasn't interested in people, in the Allmaker, he wanted to destroy the damned system.

After the Fall, he became a very fierce opponent to the brethren of the house who remained faithful to God. It was a very cold, thoughtful, calculated rage. But more than that, he was only occupied with studying the changed world. He was so hungry for knowledge that for him there was no such thing as good and bad. He wasn't evil, he was just being himself. And as someone who knows how patterns and timing work, he's thinking about the fact that his knowledge allows them to be distorted. He has since become known at the Demon of Distortion.

After the Abyss, he enters the body of a quiet and inconspicuous guy whose brother is a major gangster in the city. Desser likes it. He uses his new abilities to weave a criminal network and, through his brother, gets involved. He later becomes a major shadowy figure in the underworld of that area. He throws all his abilities into his main passion, the search for new knowledge. Of course, it's adjacent to Cryptics. And he's a Cryptic with very questionable methods. Well, like I said, he's not evil, he's just the way he is.

Hunter: Why DO werewolves and vampires hate each other?

Vampire: Well, apart from the fact that most vampires inevitably become extremely evil from a basic consequence of dehumanizing others to cope with their lives and therefore tend to be arrogant pricks

Vampire: Werewolves attack us a lot, we have no idea why, and we take offense to the attacking

Werewolf: well WE attack you all the time because you fucking reek of spiritual defilement

Vampire: What?

Werewolf: We can detect the influence of the abstract concept of defilement, corruption and the most foul things in the world. Honestly humans have a REAL problem with it in general and you generally reek of the Eater-of-Souls to SOME degree-

Hunter: On the one hand, I'm offended. On the other, that's fair

Werewolf: But vampires in particular absolutely reek of it. Usually gets worse the more morally compromised they get. Debate is ongoing on whether its a natural part of the vampire condition, or the natural consequence of humans getting worse and indulging in the worst parts of themselves until you look exactly like a spirit of all that is bad in the world to us.

Vampire: So, what, the real Beast was just humanity at its worst, given power and freedom to consume us?

Werewolf: I'm pretty sure that the Beast is a real thing but, yeah. We attack you because you guys make our Bad Thing alarms go haywire

Release Update 10/17/2024

Hello, Kinfolks! We're not quite there yet. We're about two weeks out from Halloween, and I'm not fully happy with the book yet. To cut to the quick of it, we're moving back the release date to November 30th.

I take full responsibility for this delay and offer an apology to everyone who was looking forward to a Halloween release. I'd rather release something complete than something that's only mostly finished and made the call this afternoon.

As a gesture of goodwill, when the 31st comes, we'll release the rough draft of one of the chapters to Ko-Fi members to peruse while we put the finishing and perfecting touches on the book itself. I'll be putting out a poll in the coming days so you can decide which chapter will be released. Additionally, throughout November, we'll share pages daily from the opening comic, Cracking the Bone, to help promote the series.

Thank you for sticking with us this far. We're almost there, and we are excited for you all to see what we've been making.

Alternatively -- and none of the Bratovich girls like to talk about this -- this could be one of their cousins, sent in a wooden box marked DESTROY for displeasing one of the Tzimisce who oversee the family. You just don't know, when you're someone like Rattler.

Why did I immediately adhere to the paradigm of Mage the Ascension that magic is leaving this world and that's bad but immediately was skeptical of Changeling the Dreaming's premise that wonder is leaving the world and that's bad, I wonder...

Maybe I am a stick in the mud. But i think the repeated mentions of psychology as something that kills wonder fills me with unease. Not that there aren't any criticisms to be had of the domain of psychology but it feels like such a blatant debasement that I can't help but have a skeptical response to what's being put forward.

Nedu, the Visage of Portals.

Once again, the title speaks for itself. But when has it ever been otherwise? Nedu helped their fellow oracles do their work. While some Neberu were looking into tomorrow and calculating probabilities, the Nedu were moving swiftly to all points of contention and checking how things were in reality. Serious guys. Also they created "things as earthly as locks and as mystical as wards". Anyway, they had plenty to do.

N'hai was one such Nedu assigned to the Oracle. Together they performed their duties faithfully until the disaster became impossible to ignore. Well, then he Fell. And after that, his eyes suffered as well, it wasn't the most pleasant of times. In time, he became the keeper of the knowledge of the Fallen, a librarian in a vast and impressive collection of books, scrolls, and more. Many prominent demons came to him for advice and he chose whom he would show his favor. I guess those were good days for him.

After the Abyss, he fell into the body of a clerk in a mystical-antique store. You know those tantalizing buildings filled from floor to ceiling with strange and mysterious things that reek of mystery, magic and mystery? Yes, he chose a better life again. Unfortunately, not for long, because in this story my character made a series of very bad decisions, after which many of the Fallen… well, they're no longer with us. Fortunately for N'hai he managed to find a new body rather than go to the Abyss. He is now a gorgeous female gangster. Well, I'm just embarrassed to this day…
