“I think of it as a bubble.”  Bella said, gesturing in the air again, “I can call them, but only while I’m concentrating.” Alice’s fairy-like face seemed sharper when she wasn’t trying to project friendly harmlessness, and the keen edge of her observation made Bella feel a little like a bug under a microscope. 

“Can you stop physical objects, or is it just sound and smell?” Alice's eyes were bright. 

“I’ve stopped a car before.” 

“So this is why you were chosen, then thought you could cage us if we got too out of hand?” Rosie laughed again, “Do they really think that because you stopped a car you could hold all five of us, little girl?” 

Bella tended to think that stopping a car with only your mind was sort of impressive, but Rosie clearly disagreed: The blonde vampire was staring her down. Bella stared back, “I told you already that I volunteered to show you around. Am I going to need to cage you? Your… father, made quite a few promises about your behavior.” 

Ken gripped Rosie’s arm and pulled her back a little at the same moment Alice said “don’t mind my sister, she’s not always good with strangers.” 

That sounds like something you say about a badly trained pitbull, Bella thought, but what she said was “it’s OK. Should we go in?” No need to offend the vampires on their very first day. She turned towards the school. 

At that moment the wind changed.
