Imprisonment

Imprisonment / nyotalia Germany + Prussia / 161 words [setting: 1947, after the Abolition of Prussia. Probably in the Kammergericht building] 

The first thought that comes to Germany’s mind is she’s too thin. Two years of imprisonment in a Soviet camp left Prussia small and frail. Her hair was cut currently, she notices. It’s uneven in the back, shaved too close to the scalp.

“Is it done?” Prussia asks, quietly. It’s unnerving. 

“It’s done.” Germany watches. Prussia’s shoulders tense as she exhales a tight sigh. 

“How will it happen?” 

Germany winces as she takes a few steps forward. “They wanted to hang you but Russia talked them out of it.” Prussia still doesn’t look at her. “You’re to go with her when she leaves tomorrow.” 

“Mm.” She coughs deep and wet, brings a handkerchief to her mouth. It’s red when she pulls it away. Germany looks at her, skin pulled tight over gaunt cheeks. Pale, hollow. It’s frightful. 

“Sister, I-” She begins, but Prussia cuts her off quickly. 

“You may leave now.” She continues staring forward, unfocused and unseeing. “I’m feeling tired.”

Princess Louise Beilschmidt has been betrothed to Prince Lovino Vargas for a few months now. Their wedding was arranged to happen by the end of the year, formally uniting their two kingdoms of Italia and Germania with a strong alliance. At first, it didn’t sound that bad; the two families have known each other for years now, the children being more than just acquaintances. However, no matter what, the eldest Vargas seemed to have some sort of vendetta against them, or against her – it’s been 3 months since their betrothal and he still refused to learn her language, making communication between them incredibly difficult.

His stubbornness was becoming ridiculous. She would’ve given him a piece of her mind if they could even communicate in one language other than English. Thankfully, Lovino’s younger sister, Rosella, pitied her and began to help her future sister-in-law in any way possible. The first thing the blonde asked, however, was to learn Italian. Rosella has been incredibly patient while teaching Louise her language. After a month of practice, reading texts and documents didn’t prove to be difficult or challenging anymore. Now talking? With the proper pronunciation? Now that’s a challenge.

And now, as she stood next to her betrothed in a royal ball, the Germanic princess was having a hard time starting a conversation. He always seemed so… angry at her, even while they were children he seemed to detest her, but why? She didn’t do anything to him. And now they would become husband and wife by the end of the year… how ironic.

“Bueni--” Damn it, she did it again. She stumbled upon her words. The sentence wasn’t even that long and yet she did it! “Bu—Buona notte… maestrà. Bella… serata, n—no?”
