She was beautiful.

All Mavkas were, after all.

The young man's studies taught him that maybe she was a variant of the spirit he was looking for. Her spine was visible, and sometimes people called this type of Mavka "Nyavkas".

Still beautiful, still the spirit of a woman who died an unnaturally and tragic death, still luring men to their death. A quick look showed that she too didn't cast any shadow and she didn't have a reflection in the river near her.

Mavkas were all so beautiful...

She laughed sweetly at him, asking him to approach her with a gesture of her hand.

He knew he had to stay away, he knew, but maybe he was too much of a scientist to throw away the opportunity to study that creature in close proximity, or maybe he was stupid enough to still be tricked by her.

But in any case, he was a young man, and she was his natural predator.

After many failed Inktobers, I decided to stop trying to follow prompt lists that always end up boring me, so I'm challenging myself to draw a cryptid per day for all the month of October!

No lists, no prompts, just me drawing random creatures I like!

I’m gonna introduce my another fursona 🐲✨

Meet Samskara! A mighty Chinese dragon creature, and, suddenly, the most complex design I ever made :D It took about 1 month to come up with all these details ideas for him. Before designing him, I visited the Chinese New Year’s Festival and it inspired me so much, that I wanted to create something that would remind me of it forever. That’s why Samskara has so many symbols/special patterns in his design 💛

Samskara is a shapeshifter and can turn into any living being, but his main shapes are anthro and feral dragon forms 🀄️

Can you tell me more about mavka and what her deal is? She reminds me of Scandinavian huldra from thr little I've heard and I'd love to learn more about her!:D

hello friend. a mavka, navka or nyavka is an undead forest spirit, one of type which ukrainians call the covered dead (заложні мерці) — spirits of people that died of unclean, improper death, and therefore couldn't finish the transition and weren't allowed to the orherworld. the name covered undead comes from the fact that in old times they weren't properly buried, and were left in forests covered by leaves and twigs.

generally mavky are envisioned as beautiful girls, although in some regions there are beliefs about male mavky (sometimes called didky). mavka looks perfectly human except for the fact that their backs lack skin and muscle, exposing their innards and spine. they aren't malicious, but are obliviously playful and can hurt people during their plays — tickle or dance you to death, drown, ward you off your tray. in some western regions it's also believed that time goes faster when encountering them — what is felt like several hours could actually be several hundred years.

navky live in forests and mountain caves, and they like to dance, weave, play and prank wanderers, especially young men. to ward off mavky valeriana, garlic and wormwood are used, as well as wearing your shirt inside out. like most undead spirits in ukrainian mythology, navky are most active during the green festival/rusalka week.

there is a ukrainian holiday called navsky velykden, or undead easter, celebrated at the first thursday after easter. in this day all mavky, rusalky, upyri and all the other unclean forces celebrate easter. at night during the holiday it was prohibited to visit churches, since celebrating undead could dismember you if spotted.

Mavkas are spirits in ukrainian folklore, yall can read some more about them under the cut

The spirits known by this term represented the souls of girls who had died unnatural, tragic or premature deaths, particularly unchristened babies. Mavkas often appear in the form of beautiful young girls who entice and lure young men into the woods, where they "tickle" them to death. Mavkas have no reflection in water, nor do they cast shadows. In some accounts, they were also said to help farmers by looking after cattle and driving out wild animals.

A subtype of the Mavkas are the Nyavkas, which behave the same except for having "no back", meaning that their spine and some other insides can be seen; the most defining feature between determining Mavkas and Nyavkas is whether or not the insides are visible from the back.

Mavkas and Nyavkas were believed to live in groups in forests, mountain caves, or sheds, which they decorated with rugs. They made thread of stolen flax and wove thin transparent cloth for making clothes for themselves. They loved flowers, which they wore in their hair. In the spring, they planted flowers in the mountains, to which they enticed young men, whom they tickled to death. On Pentecost (known as Navka's Easter, Ukrainian: На́вський Вели́кдень), they held games, dances, and orgies. A demon accompanied them on a flute or pipes.

Shadow of the Forgotten

My submission for @aimportantdragoncollector ‘s Three Weeks of Triholders, (Although this piece is featuring Duoholders 😅)

I created an au based around a Nyavka Yoichi and a woodsman Second . .

Nyavka are a type of Mavka, a spirit in Ukrainian folklore.

One prominent feature is that Nyavka have no back so you can see their spine . . . They often live in bodies of water like rivers or lakes in the forest (my mother for instance first told me about them as a way of warning me away from a nearby river lol). Some interpretations have them leading men to their doom and drowning them, while other interpretations have them being more benevolent caretakers of the forest although these two are not mutually exclusive!

While I'm no writer and am still coming up with ideas I believe this au would go something like this:

Yoichi and AFO were born in a mountain village surrounded by forests and bordered by a fierce river The village believed the twins to be unlucky due to their odd striking white hair and the death of their mother during their birth and they are shunned.

The two are only really allowed to stay in the village as hands to help in the fields, life is unpleasant but the two make due as they grow up. One winter when the two are around 11 or so Yoichi gets very sick. However he is refused treatment, resources are low and they village do not want to waste supplies on the weakest of the twins who would likely die before he is an adult anyways.

AFO tries to steal him medicine anyways but this goes wrong and the two are driven out of the village when he is caught. They attempt to flee across the river into the surrounding woods. Unfortunately the water is freezing and they drown.

Due to their tragic death the brothers come back as Nyavka and now dwell in the surrounding forest.

A newly undead AFO takes on a much more vindicative and aggressive role, the number of deaths caused by drowning in the nearby area skyrockets lol. Yoichi on the other hand dwells deeper in the woods and keeps to himself as much as his brother allows.

Many years later, Yoichi sees a young man with a scar across his face and striking orange hair seemingly fleeing from something. He is intrigued and decides to observe this stranger . . .

(And your standard vault escape (forest escape)) story happens from there. :) (with some more twists)

There’s a surprising amount of cryptids that tickle people to death lolol like the mahaha from Inuit stories

So I did some research (because you can’t just mention multiple tickle cryptids and expect me not to google that endlessly) and you’re right, there’s a ton. The Mahaha itself I thought was interesting, as it’s described as a humanoid creature with long fingernails, and, according to the Wikipedia page for some game called Warriors of Myth, “...if an Aboriginal was found dead with a bizarre smile across his or her face, the tribe assumed it was the work of the Mahaha....” 

Among the Mahaha and the Mavka previously mentioned, there is also the Surale, a woolly shapeshifter who plays tricks on farmers, one of which is often leading them astray and tickling them to death. There’s also the Archura, also a shapeshifter (lots of shapeshifters in these mythologies), who is described as a mischievous creatures who imitates other’s voices to lure victims into his cave whereupon he tickles them to death. Finally, closely related to the earlier Surale is the Leshy from Slavic mythology, who who embodies much of the same traits and mannerisms. 

There appear to be a lot of tickle-themed cryptids, strangely, sprinkled all throughout different cultures. It would be cool if one existed where the tickling didn’t end in death, but one can only hope I suppose.
