Nursing is hard, not one person will argue that. No matter what field of nursing you work in from OB/GYN to hospice house, it is hard. So is life. Remember 1 difficult class is equal to 3 thankful and gratuitousness patients. 1 failed test is equal to 2 patients who came back from a code.

I remember the first code I was in when I started working in the hospital setting. The patient went into asystole and never came back. I did CPR for what felt like years trying to get this patient’s heart to beat at least one last time...so he could at least have the privilege of saying goodbye to his wife and kids. I remember thinking after his body bag was wheeled away how ashamed of myself I should be because I felt like I didn’t do enough to save him. One of the nurses said came to me and said, “You do all you can do and everything in your power, and his wife and kids know that. Its his time to go, and your time to grow.” After this I went and gave another dying patient a bed bath. I remember them crying and saying how thankful they were because they loved just having that feeling of being clean in a warm bed again, it made them feel like home.

Nursing school, much like the hospital, has good days and bad days. When you fail a test what are you going to do? Are you going to turn in a drop form and quit nursing school? When your patient dies and you couldn’t save them what are you going to do? Are you going to quit your job and give up the career you worked so hard for? I hope not, because you are so much better than that. When obstacles are placed in front of you, you cannot quit because you will be doing that your whole life! You simply do all you can do. You do everything in your power. That test will come and go, and its your time to grow.

You don't pick your patients in nursing, them being here picks us to help them. That is why we don't pick who we take care of, we all bring something to the table that will help the patients for the better. I think this lesson needs to be taught sooner rather than later

South Carolina Nurse 2019

Most people think that one wrong move in their clinical, or one wrong answer in class or one failed test in clinical determines how their career will go and they think that it determines how good of a nurse they’ll be. Nurses are people, they still make mistakes, but its what you do and learn from it that makes you a good nurse. Don’t ever feel like you aren’t a good nurse, because you are with your patients for a reason, you bring something that no other nurse they’ve had will bring and no one after you will bring either. A bath a laugh or a smiling face go a thousand miles for the patient who can’t take a step.
