the new birth of kitaro movie has released in japan today! to celebrate, here's a spread of my interpretations of the kitaro characters that I've made recently!

3. Nurikabe (The Wall That Said "Nah, You’re Not Going Anywhere")

Blame:

“I was walking home, and an invisible wall blocked me.”

“I kept walking, but the path never ended.”

“I swear I wasn’t drunk. The wall was real.”

Why It Was Hated:

1. The Ultimate Roadblock – Imagine wandering alone at night when suddenly, an invisible force stops you in your tracks. No matter how far you walk, you can’t get past it. You turn around? The path stretches endlessly. You try to move left or right? Nope. Still trapped. Congratulations, you’ve met Nurikabe—the troll of yokai.

2. It Wasn’t Just a Wall—It Was a Sentient Prank – Unlike normal walls, Nurikabe actively blocked travelers for no reason. It wasn’t guarding anything, it wasn’t protecting secrets—it just existed to be a menace.

3. Fear of Getting Lost & The Unknown – Back then, getting lost at night was basically a death sentence. No flashlights, no GPS, just you, the darkness, and the creeping dread that you’d never get home. Nurikabe turned that paranoia into reality.

4. Men Feared Looking Dumb – Because let’s be real, how do you explain to your friends that you lost an entire battle to a wall?

“So you were late because of… a wall?”

“An invisible wall.”

“Dude, just say you got lost.”

5. It Was Virtually Unbeatable – Most yokai had weaknesses—salt, charms, prayers. But Nurikabe? Nope. Hitting it was useless, running was useless. The only way to escape was to gently tap the bottom of the wall (because apparently, that confused it enough to let you go).

This week's Fantasmical Fridays Yokai edition is the Nurikabe. In Japanese folklore they are invisible walls that would block people on their paths. There were some early illustrations of what some artists believed it would look like. I made my version much cuter than some early interpretations where they're shown a bit more grotesque looking.
