Top Forensic Experts, Lawyers, Judicial Officers, Academicians & Doctors weigh on Inclusion of Forensic Science in Legal Academic Curriculum
Legal Desire Insights organised its 2nd Annual International Conference on Medico-Legal Issues & Use of Forensics in Criminal Investigation at Hotel Golden Palms, New Delhi on 21st July, 2019. The speakers of the Conference included top forensic experts, judges, lawyers, doctors and academicians to discuss about the theme of the conference i.e. Need for Inclusion of Forensics in Criminal Investigation System.
At the opening remarks, Anuj Kumar who is founder of Legal Desire Insights spoke about the need of inclusion of Forensics in legal academic curriculum of Indian Law Schools. “Not a single institution in India is offering a Masters Law Degree in Criminal Investigation with inclusion of Forensic Science. There is need for such courses as that will pave way for India to produce informed criminal lawyers and judges to deal with cases involving use of forensic science to solve criminal cases. Our distinguished guests, speakers and delegates have truly exemplified this year’s theme.”
Elaborating on the importance of Forensic science in criminal investigation, Dr. V.N. Mathur, Former Director at Forensic Science Lab shares his experiences during investigation of various cases and how the forensics development in country shaping the criminal justice system.
Lalit Bhasin, President at Bar Association of India & Society of Indian Law firms weighs the importance of an informed lawyer & judge with forensic knowledge for a better justice administration. He talks about the various judgments and statues that bring the law & forensic science altogether for an efficient justice delivery system for criminal cases.
Renowned Forensic expert & academician Prof. (Dr.) Shiv Rattan Kochar also share multiple instances of his career where forensic science helped in solving criminal cases. He emphasis on having forensic science included in the Legal Academic Curriculum of India that will enable India to produce informed Lawyers & Judicial Officers with forensic knowledge to deal with Criminal Cases involving use of Forensic Science, Postmortem Report, Questioned Documents, Application of DNA etc which emphasise how important is for lawyer and judges to have knowledge of Forensic Science while dealing such cases.
During the conference, Medico-Legal Reporter & A book authored by Dr. Vivekanshu Verma, Prof. (Dr.) Shiv Ratan Kochar & Dr. Devendra Ricchariya titled ‘Practical Emergency Trauma Toxicology Cases Workbook in Simulation Training’ was also released.
The conference technical sessions was divided in 3 sessions on ‘Medico-Legal Issues’, ‘Applicability of Forensics in Criminal Investigation’ and ‘Need for Inclusion in Legal Academic Curriculum’.
Pallavi Pratap, Advocate on Record at Supreme Court talked about various judicial pronouncements on Medical Jurisprudence cases where judiciary steps in to safeguard the rights of doctors and patients.
Dr. Vivekanshu Verma weighs on the doctors rights in course of the patient treatment and the challenges faced by the doctors attracting legal issues which need attention of judiciary.
The session chair Dr. P.N. Tiwari, Member – Medical matters, DCF- Delhi Govt., shared his professional experience of handling medico-legal cases and also underlined the importance of forensic knowledge for both lawyers and judge to deal the cases.
Cia Gabriella Maurizio, International Medico-Legal Attorney stressed about various medico-legal issues and importance of DNA & how discovery of DNA profiling is doing wonders in criminal investigation.
Ravinder Chauhan, Senior Scientific Asst. (Ballistics), CBI presented his 3 case studies on crime scene investigation where he solved the critical criminal cases by applying Forensic sciences. He talked about how forensics is helping CBI to solve mysterious cases and how it is important to have forensic science development in a country for better administration of justice.
Mohneesh Chandra, Senior Scientific Assistant, Forensics Science Laboratory, New Delhi gave presentation on Medico-Legal importance on Opium, its legal production and case studies.
Navin Kumar Jaggi, Head- Jaggi Jaggi and Jaggi lauded the attempt of the Legal Desire Insights to bring together Doctors, Forensic Experts, Judicial Officers, Lawyers, academicians and students to discuss the important topic of inclusion of forensics in criminal investigation.
Adv. Vivek Narayan Sharma, Joint Secretary at Supreme Court Bar Association talk about the position of forensic evidence under indian legislation and how important is forensic science for inclusion in legal academic curriculum for upcoming lawyers and judges.
Nagendra Kumar, Former Judge and Consultant at National Human Rights Commission shares his experience of handling case in judicial career and complaint received at NHRC where forensic has played important role in dispensation of justice but that could be only possible if the judicial officer is informed about the forensic science and thus, forensic science should be taken up by the law schools of india in their academic curriculum.
Adv. Vaibhavi Sharma, Prosoll Law gave session on role of forensic in criminal cases by case studies on forensic evidence. She explains the concept of forensic attorneys and concluded how lack of Application of Forensics causing delay in dispensation of Justice.
During the sessions, oral paper & poster presentations were given by various forensic experts, research scholars, students, doctors and lawyers.
Ankit Gupta, Co-Founder at Legal Desire Insights called the event as a part of the organisation’s initiative to promote the importance & applicability of forensics in criminal investigation system. He brief that the organisation is actively working from last 3 year with global team of forensic experts and members of legal fraternity including lawyers and judicial officers.
