Spotify Wrapped 2024

I always love when data about topics I enjoy can be displayed in a fun way like the Spotify Wrapped. I also enjoy seeing what my friends music tastes are like (and secretly judging) as well.

Here’s my Spotify wrapped for 2024. Despite the growing evidence that the data is not super accurate I don’t have much negative to say other than the vibe names like what would you play for someone who requested “vampire football rap” on the other hand though Heatwave beach reggaton makes some sense. Kanye West returns to the top spot after being dethroned in 2023 by king gizzard. He has been my top artist 5/6 years staring in 2018. Also thought it was interesting to note my top artists first inital goes KDKDK, odd coincidence. Also interesting if you think 58 K is a lot this is actually down over 10k in comparison to last year.

Here are my top 5 songs

1.) Gimme Da Lite – Lil Yachty, Southside Let me say this song sonically is very unique and when Yachty does the CHIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNnnnnnnn at the end of this last verse I levitate. Plus watching the video now for the first time I can say the video is of a similar quality to the song.

2.) Get In With Me – Bossman D Low – I first found this song on tiktok where it became very popular and has ammased 65 million streams on spotify since its release at the beginning of this year.

3.) Juan Martha – La Original Banda de Limon – This one is also coming straight from CartelTok haha I heard it and liked it immediatly and played it pretty much non stop for a day and then only occasionally for the rest of the year. Plus narcocorridos is one of my favorite genres of spanish music (honorable mention to cumbia and boleros) plus the story is good, essentially Juan Martha is so scary and bad that even a 50k bounty won’t make people talk and even the government is scared to chase him because they fear Juan Martha so much. This is the first time ever a spanish song has made top 5 in my spotify wrapped so that was a nice surprise for me.

4.) Like an Eagle – Dennis Parker – I heard this song for maybe 10 seconds before it abruply ends in episode four in the HBO show, and safde produced “The Curse” and had to rewind to shazam it. This is a underground TUNE! Disco is not a genre I usually listen to but can’t help but like this song.

5.) It’s My Life – The Animals – One of my First vinyl purchaces ever was an Eric Burdon record. I have alway been a big fan of The Animals and Eric Burdon and this is one of my favorites and stands out as a superstar for the band. Plus this bass riff is so funky how can you not enjoy it and the accompanying guitar riff, incredible. The songs perfect.

I also noticed my top two songs are combine for a 3:54 listening time. Goes to show you what kind of influence streaming numbers is making on the music industry.

Shorter songs=more plays=more $$.

We first say this stragegy successfully applied with Lil Nas X and Old town road which was #1 for seventeen weeks and beat the record of sixteen held by Drake for in my feelings. To say Lil Nas changed the music industry with this song is not an understatement at all.

Continuing with the theme of Seven To Consider for any episodes featuring all Creative Commons music just feels right.  Seven songs isn't an overwhelming number of tunes that are likely to be unfamiliar to most listeners.  Hopefully, it's just enough to leave people wanting more.  And as often as possible, I like to include selections that feature recognizable names.  The Shad & Skratch Bastid cut that kicks off the show features a co-production credit from DJ Jazzy Jeff.  Other hip-hop cuts within this episode include the uptempo electronic-enhanced "My Dreams" from Ultimate Fantastic (one could argue that it's slightly hip-house in its approach) and DJ Enki's  "Ghost Of An Instant," which could be a favorite with fans of early work from DJ Shadow and RJD2.

Ohad Slavin's "Hide" is a midtempo hypnotic cut from the Digital Diamonds netlabel that straddles the line betweeen techno and house.  "You Are Enough" by Niki J Crawford is uplifting motivational soul that the world can use right now.  Tab's "Sake Bomb" is one of the highlights of this episode:  a sultry and trippy downtempo song that calls for constant rewinds.  And then there's the drum and bass banger "Regal Bounce" by Moki McFly.  It comes from last year's blocSonic netlabel release Tabernacle Sanctuary Alligator Soufflé, which won the 2024 Creative Commons Community Music Award for Album Of The Year.  If any of these tunes pique your interest about the artists or labels featured within this episode, then my work here is done.

I've made a blog ( @bl-wrapped ) and a short list of various prompts for anyone who'd like to make a little end of year wrap up of their BL journey through 2022.

(long story short, I couldn't find anything like this already in circulation that wasn't a month long I so decided to make one for myself, anyone else who would like to join in is welcome!)

In the spirit of Spotify wrapped dropping whenever they feel like it(and this month being the busiest season): this challenge has no specific run date, but it does have a finish date! December 31st baby.

anyway. if sign of life is not my number 1 song on my apple music rewind playlist (equivalent to spotify wrapped) i will go on youtube dot com and read another short story from gloom. but i don’t drink anymore so i’ll be high this time. i am so confident that sign of life will be my most played song of 2022 even though it only came out halfway through the year that i will even agree that if it isn’t, you guys can choose the short story i read. even if it’s the incest one or the poop one. i PROMISE you this.

Two things before we dive in.

1. If you are an actual expert and see mistakes please do tell me. I do not always fully understand wtf is happening so if ye can explain it better than me, enlighten us.

2. I mean no aggressive hatred here! Just an interesting occurrence. A thing that scratched my brain and screamed look it ain't adding up sis. And I love me some metric and statistics… 

The lil dictionary;

• For the song to be counted by Spotify algorithms it needs to be played/streamed for at least 30 seconds. This however does not count if the sound is muted. It's in place to prevent fake streams and statistics inflation.

• Unique (Monthly) Listener - artists unique listener is an user who streamed any song by a given artist for longer than 30 seconds in the past 28 days. Meaning I listen to 11:11 and I'm accounted as a unique listener for the next 28 days even if I never listen to any of Benny Boy's songs again. The user may of course listen to many songs of the same artist or different playlist and such for many days. The count does not change though. The number is visible right after ye open artists profile and it kinda does show how relevant they are. 

• Stream Count - again, for a song to be counted as streamed it has to be played for more than or at least 30 seconds. Here's the catch tho. It is not tied to the user, so for example I can listen to 11:11 for 31 seconds (counts as 1 stream) and then rewind it back and listen again (counts as another stream). Basically it's a number of how many times the song was played overall.

Now. The story here is that the monthly listeners can be kinda badly interpreted, but that matters when bigger names and numbers are concerned. The important metric is obviously the streams. Which is understandable. When someone has lotsa monthly listeners but low streams, except for maybe one viral song that is featured on popular playlists, it is bad. Larger number of streams indicate that fans are staying with you longer and are listening to different songs and different albums and then replay them after some time. This is later picked up by Spotify algorithms and songs end up on playlists compilations and such. Then if someone listens to the song on the playlist cause it was recommended, it is counted both as a stream and as a unique artist listener when it's their first time listening to the artist, even if they would not listen to the artist after that, they still counted as a unique listener for 28 days.

But we talk about Benny Boy here. He has only one song so far and it is out for less than 28 days, so the statistics are quite wild. All his listeners can only stream 11:11. Benny's numbers are as follow;

• 11:11 streams - 1 001 130

• monthly listeners - 194 995

• 11:11 streams - 1 024 225

Morning of 12/10/21

• monthly listeners - 199 254

• 11:11 streams - 1 046 774

Quick math. Benny Boy gets around 20k streams per day.

The part above? Where I explained that having lotsa streams and way less unique listeners is not bad? Well for artists who have many different songs, albums, playlists which users can stream and then return to them some time in the 28 days window. As for Ben... Ye know what I'm about to say right? Yes, he does not attract lots of new listeners, it seems like his streams come from repeats. It's even worse if ye think that some of the almost  200k unique listeners might have streamed the song on some playlist only once. Maybe even skipped it next time it was recommended? 

Some of his fanpages were showing ppl how to replay the song so it would get more streams. Some fans were admitting to playing it on repeat right under the one million stream celebratory post. Wonder why he did not liked any of such declarations ;c  Found one cool muffin on twitter who shared that they listened to the song for hours on the 17th alone. Replies were mostly ‘same girl!’.

And I also looked up some new-ish artists or more established artists (not as big as Lil Nas X or Taylor) who released songs on the same Friday. No one with a similar count of unique listeners was able to reach even similar streams as he did in the timeframe, from 17th to now. Sooo being nice, 200k people gave him over a million streams in 24 days… Realistically I would say the number of users who listened only once and moved on might be quite high. Meaning that his fans appreciate the song but no more people than that. Prove me wrong tho. If I am wrong, not because I'm an immature hater. 

Also, the YT music video (I know it's not a small number but for comparison purposes) only has 502k views. For reference, over 100k of those views come from the 16th when it AccIDenTaLlY dropped via People Mag magic link. The lovely graphic below is for all his videos, not 11:11 only. Ye can see that boy been falling hard and there was a little spark with Rise Up video but c'mon x.x 

ALSO! Based on the data above, his daily numbers from last couple of weeks show that the daily average views are 20k! But that's average and the real numbers are closer too 3-8k per day with occasional 18-20k over some weekends and when Rise Up teaser dropped. 

TL;DR

It seems like Benny Boy fanbase is very persistent. It also looks like I was right all along and he failed to attract listeners beyond the fanbase.

Why I chose my url: This is kind of a convoluted thing, but like, the easy version is that it’s the name of my trooper on the leviathan server (now called Aea out of the game bc they were supposed to be my self-insert but then they escaped into the woods and developed a storyline for themself).  The LONG thing is that I have an oc named Regia Elaphae, who I modeled after pnigophobia, the fear of choking or being smothered, and I made her snake-themed.  Rex is the latin word for king--for king snakes--which i swapped to regina and then took out the n bc ‘Regina’ didn’t fit her, and Elaphe is the genus for rat snakes, but i found two ways of spelling it so i spelled it Elaphae, and when I got into swtor I decided to use Elaphae in reference to myself.  I replaced my old url with this one after i started playing that trooper of the same name, bc my old one was :I .  I was into hetalia in middle school, and homestuck, and when I got on tumblr that followed me into my url.  I’m not into hetalia anymore, or anime at all, and homestuck fell off my radar into the ‘i’ll go “hey i know that” if i see it, but i’m not in the fandom anymore’ pile.  For the longest time my blog description was ‘it’s been 5 years and i still haven’t changed my url’, but it was time for change fjdklasfaj.  It’s better this way.

Dream trip: I want to go back to Rennes.  I miss it.  It was awesome, and, hilariously, I miss being able to get a burger that isn’t Drowning in its own grease.  America doesn’t know how to do healthy burger that tastes good.  Europe knows what’s up tho. I also miss being able to like, have just a pitcher of room temperature water next to a cute little glass and have it not be weird.  The cups are too big in america, i drink so much less water bc it’s just too daunting.  I’m dehydrated constantly.  Also i miss the METRO.  I loved the metro, loved nyooming along in the trains, wandering around the central part of the city, it was cool.

Favorite food: Eel!!  Eel’s tasty as fuck.  I love it.

Last book read: i have got ZERO clue what the last book i read was.  I mean, technically it was a textbook for my myth, magic, and folk religion class, but like, blegh.  Nah.  Not fun.  I think before that I started reading Metro 2033???  I have a copy in french, and am flipping between that and trying to fckn get through au revoir là-haut.

2. Pellinor, y’all it’s medieval and magic and COOL and i’m a big nerd for that.  (these books are so good ;v;)  Also they got wine that makes cramps and headaches go away and magic baths, so like, fuck yes give me that sweet sweet painkiller juice.  It’s magic babey.

3. Thedas, bc dragon age, and like, when things Aren’t all fucked sideways to hell, there are just like, People.  Going about their days.  It’s great.  Also MORE MAGIC  Science is all fucked up in my vicinity, so like, how much can i fuck up the magic o3o
