We write to you with the conclusions of our investigation into the synthesized audio transmissions picked up by the deep space telescope at regular intervals since 1986. The source was traced to two brothers in Kawasaki, Japan, who identified themselves as Satoshi and Makoto. When we raided the building, they were huddled around a synthesizer manufactured by the Casio Corporation, model number CZ-5000.

Alec Trevelyan was born to a family of Lienz Cossacks. Following the Second World War, the anti-Bolshevik Cossack brigades whom had collaborated with the Germans fled from the advance of the Red Army. They surrendered to the British Army in Austria, believing they would join them and wage war against the Communists. However, British decided to forcibly repatriate them and their families to the Soviet Union, where many were promptly executed and the remainder were sent to Gulags including women and children. The Trevelyans survived the ordeal and Alec Trevelyan was born. Shortly afterward, however, his father committed murder-suicide; "unable to let himself or [Alec's] mother live with the shame of it". As with James Bond, Alec was now an orphan. In one of life's ironies, the young Trevelyan was recruited by the British Secret Intelligence Service to be an agent of the government that had betrayed his parents. Although MI6 was aware of his background, they had reasoned that these events had happened so early in Trevelyan's life, that he would not be affected by them. Trevelyan rose through the ranks of MI6 to gain 00 status and the number 006. It was during this time that he became close friends with fellow MI6 agent 007, James Bond, as the two had been on numerous missions together, and shared everything. Trevelyan's skill set included stealth, manipulation, superb skills in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat, expert marksmanship and also a talent in several languages. However, Trevelyan continued to harbor resentment towards the British for their perceived betrayal and began plotting his revenge.

Faking his death In 1986, 006 is paired again with 007 and the two are tasked with destroying the Arkhangelsk chemical weapons facility. It is on this mission, conspiring with Soviet Colonel Arkady Ourumov, that Trevelyan stages his own death. In the course of the mission, the two are surrounded by Ourumov and his men into the main chamber of the facility and 006 is supposedly taken prisoner at gunpoint. Under the pretence of allowing Bond to surrender, Ourumov gives him ten seconds to come out. On reaching one, Alec is shot in the head. 007 manages to escape and succeeds in destroying the facility by setting limpet mines with a three minute fuse. Trevelyan had not anticipated that Bond would change the detonation fuse from the agreed upon six minutes. Although he narrowly escapes death, the right half his face is left horribly disfigured by the explosion.

Becoming Janus Now supposedly dead, Trevelyan founds a criminal organization under the pseudonym of Janus (the two headed Roman god of beginnings and endings) and sets in motion a plan to take revenge against Britain. His scheme involves hijacking a secret Soviet space weapon, codenamed GoldenEye. With the weapon's control key in his possession and a duplicate control center in Cuba, Trevalyan plans to steal billions of dollars from the Bank of England and transfer the money to other organizations before erasing all of its financial records with an electromagnetic pulse generated by the GoldenEye satellite, concealing the theft and destroying Britain's economy.

Revealing himself to Bond Assigned to investigate the detonation of one of the two GoldenEye satellites triggered by General Ourumov and Trevelyan's henchwoman Xenia Onatopp, James Bond traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia in search of the culprits. To find Janus, Bond met mafia head and ex-KGB officer Valentin Zukovsky. Although not aware of Janus' identity, Zukovsky revealed to 007 that Janus is a Cossack of Lienz. Through his criminal ties, the gangster arranged a meeting for Bond at the Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg. Janus sent Onatopp to dispose of the spy but Bond managed to overpower the sadomasochist assassin and forced her to bring him to Janus at a memorial park. As Bond walked through the relics of the collapsed Soviet Union, he was approached by Janus, who revealed himself to be Alec Trevelyan. Not believing his eyes, Bond lowered his weapon. Trevelyan sarcastically asked whether 007 would like to make his typical witty comeback, but the spy is too shocked. He explained his motivations and casually mentioned that he initially wanted to ask for Bond to join him, but deep down he knew that the British agent would be loyal to the United Kingdom and not to his friend. Furious and disappointed, Bond attempted to shoot Trevelyan; but was tranquilized before he could pull the trigger. 007 and Natalya Simonova, a witness to Trevelyan's scheme, were bound and placed inside the stolen helicopter rigged to destroy itself. Bond was able to eject both of them out of the helicopter before it exploded.

Do you think it was a flashback? Because I can’t see El having her head shaved for the whole season how would they capture her again plus does Brenner even have access for it to be present day is pretty hmm but also if it is a flashback El didn’t remember other numbers either she didn’t even remember Kali maybe it’s a dream sequence??

Hi! Thank you for your questions, anon. We spoke about this a little here, but we wanted to add a little more. This is going to be a loooooooong one!

We don’t think that El is going to have a shaved head for the entire season (according to sources on twitter somewhere, Millie’s stunt double does have a shaved head, but from what we know Millie herself doesn’t. I imagine she’d have a bald cap for any scenes where she needs to have a shaved head). Also, from what we know that was Millie hiding behind the umbrella, and she does have a Hawkins Lab- style gown on so there is definitely something related to that going on with El in this season. 

Is it a flashback? Possibly. El could be processing a lot of what has happened to her and having flashbacks to her time in the lab - it could simply be minor flashbacks to add to part of her storyline in S4. There has been lab and Brenner flashbacks before and I can totally see them doing it again. 

However, we have been thinking about the idea that things are happening unknowingly. Firstly we have the bite on El’s leg (some people did mention on instagram that Millie has a scar on her leg in that picture, so it could be present day El, however it is on the wrong leg so it could just be a shadow or something else) and we don’t think the bite is going to just be overlooked. El lost her powers pretty soon after being bitten and that can’t just be a coincidence so we’d be amazed if it’s just never touched upon again. Has the bite impacted El more than just losing her powers? Did part of the Mind Flayer get inside of her in the moment? Is it controlling her - slowly, so that it’s not noticeable at first - and causing her to act in ways she wouldn’t normally? The mindflayer could be directing her to do things without her knowing, so rather than a flashback, she could be operating in nightmares (Almost like Freddy Kreuger - which would tie in with one of the Video Store Friday S4 influences, where they mention Nightmare on Elm Street and specifically number 3 - Dream Warriors). We touched upon this idea a little in the podcast before last - where we spoke about this potentially being something that happened with Victor Creel. We know he committed a murder, but we also know that it happened during the time where MK Ultra was at it’s peak, and with him being in Pennhurst (and we know the ST version of Pennhurst is in Kerley County, close to Hawkins) was he involved in the programme, and did it make him do things without him knowing he was doing them? It’s also interesting to me (Lauren) that Victor Creel is played by Robert Englund, who was the original Freddy Kreuger. 

In regards to other numbers, it wouldn’t surprise me if they were included. Season 4 seems to be a pretty adventurous season so far, with multiple different storylines and a whole array of new characters and we have been wondering how this is all going to fit inside eight episodes. We know the other numbers do exist (we’ve met Kali - albeit briefly) and for the sake of this argument let’s say that the comics are 100% canon content. Therefore we would’ve met 006, 009/9.5 and 003 and where the comics last left off, two of them had joined up with Kali (although the comics do retcon her not knowing them, so take that as you will) In the same podcast I mentioned earlier, I speak about how I thought Peter Ballard could possibly be a number (although after those set pictures, we’re wondering if perhaps Peter isn’t actually from the 1980′s - look out for a whole podcast coming soon on our thoughts about how time travel could play a part in S4) and if he is a number he’s been in Pennhurst this whole time. Has Brenner been there too? Did he leave the lab (presumed dead) and took his experiments to somewhere close by to keep an eye on Hawkins (and definitely El) but also so he could continue his work. There has been hints throughout the show that he isn’t actually dead, and maybe this is the season where he finally comes back. This idea shows how Pennhurst could tie in with S4, and how the storylines can become more connected, rather than just being something brand new (The Duffers - and Shawn Levy, I believe - have spoken about how S4 touches upon this ‘big bad’ that’s been there this whole time. Brenner? Pennhurst? The Lab? It’s been there since before the kids in ST were even born, so it definitely fits).

This has been a very long reply, so I’ll wrap it up now. Yes they could be flashbacks (it is a very strong possibility that they are) but were not ruling out the idea that there could be a little more to these scenes and characters than initially meets the eye.

006/366 - I quit the hat I’d started. It was far too small. I should’ve realized it when, even with my limited experience, I thought it was a suspiciously small number of stitches to cast on. Oh well. Frogged. 

007/366 - Cast on a new hat with an adult number of stitches. So far, going well. 

008/366 - We woke up early (for us) to go see the Jean-Francois Millet exhibit at the Van Gogh museum. Since I’m still working on that hat, and there are only so many ways to photograph a black hat in progress, I’m posting some 140 year old stitches instead. The brown-frame is Man Winding Yarn, Van Gogh, 1884. The gold is The Knitting Lesson, Millet, 1869.
