flames. all around them. all they could see. flames.

nugz breathed heavily, their breaths causing their mask to become stuffy. they grasped their staff close, gripping the handle so hard it could’ve broken it, if they were strong enough. thump, thump, thump. their robotic heart was the only thing they could hear, its constant thumping not helping the storm in their head.

it had been bad this time… but then again it always was, with talon. the same bullshit every time. they come, they destroy, they leave. with whatever new thing they oh, so desperately needed. this time it was Petra. and every time it would bring them back. bring them back to the destruction that had led them to talon. the flames, the billowing smoke, the painful burns that had destroyed their old body. god, the pain. they could still feel it sometimes, even with their mechanical body. those phantoms of injuries still lingered. they grasped their coat, the thumping of their heart quickening. it was becoming harder and harder to breath, their vision blurring, their mind becoming fuzzier and fuzzier-

“Nugz..?”

a familiar voice snapped them back to reality. a voice so distant yet so soul shaking.. but it couldn’t be. talon said they were dead. that they had died on that stupid solo mission they were so desperate to undertake. they were supposed to be gone… was this a side affect of the medication moira had been giving them? another hallucination? another twisted part of nugz’s psyche coming to bite them in the worst way??

they turned around, seeing the figure of their “undead” friend standing amongst the rubble and flames. charlie held a large drill in their hands, blood dripping from it having fought off talon agents just mere moments ago. their cybernetic blue eyes glowing, staring straight into nugz.

they both stood, frozen. as if an ice age had hit them at that moment, freezing them in place. for a moment, the painful thumping of nugz’s heart stopped.

“ I hear your eyes, and I see those cries. “

“no..” nugz muttered under their breath, shaking their head before yanking off their mask. it was becoming suffocating. “th-they said you were dead.. you’re supposed to be dead..!” they choked out, gripping onto their coat even tighter.

charlie lowered their drill, inching a bit closer to nugz. so many emotions fled through their mind. sadness, regret, guilt, happiness, relief. it all fogged their mind. seeing their friend here, the one true friend they had back at talon. two young agents, groomed to be the perfect subjects on and off the battlefield. their minds broken time and time again, yet every time.. they always had eachother. they offered eachother hope in the wake of despair, companionship in the dark caverns of loneliness. until that day. the day charlie failed their mission, and was taken away. it seemed only one of them had escaped that despair, while the other was still miles and miles deep in it.

“nugz.. i- oh my god.” charlie trampled over their words, “i-it’s okay, it’s me..” they inched closer and closer to nugz, dropping their drill altogether. in one swift movement driven by a surge of strong emotions, charlie rushed to nugz. they tugged them into a tight embrace, tears pouring down their face at this point, which they hadn’t noticed before. they were too caught up in this moment to realize tears had been welling up in their eyes. same with nugz.

nugz tensed, having not felt this kind of embrace in a long, long time. charlie muttered under their breath, a sound of relief in their voice-

“you have no idea how much i’ve missed you…”

the destruction around them didn’t matter anymore.
