I suspected that Ohkubo got presured or "nugged" to adapt his style to be closer to the anime plus be less creative and "wacky" and I heard people know make the claim that he confirmed it in some old interview. Do you maybe have a source or atleast think that you have heard something in this ballpark before?

I haven’t finished reading all the interviews I found, and so far I haven’t come to that idea. 

If anything, I never quite got the sense that Ohkubo was persuaded to be closer to the anime. And it’s not as if the anime didn’t break away from its own style: look at how Soul’s weapon form gets bent out of shape, Maka and Black Star’s exaggerated reaction when electrocuted by Ox and Harvar, Black Star’s faces when dealing with Excalibur. All of that was so wacky, and a lot of that owes to what was in the original manga. 

Let’s try to timeline this: 

June 2003: Prologue 1 of the manga comes out as a one-shot. 

(I haven’t done my research, so I assume Prologue 1 in Volume 1 is nearly identical to the one-shot--if I’m wrong, I would appreciate getting to see what the actual one-shot looked like.)

January 2007: Volume 8 of the manga comes out in Japan, featuring Chapters 28 to 31.

March 2008: Volume 11 of the manga comes out in Japan, featuring Chapters 40 to 44.

April 2008: Episode 1 of the first anime comes out.

Looking at these designs, I don’t quite get the sense that the anime influenced the look of the manga as much. Now, granted, I expect there was a year of production work before the anime premiere at which point Ohkubo would have seen Studio BONES designs, so let’s also look at what came out in January 2007, that being Volume 8. 

And…yeah, Volume 8 is kind of when the character designs get less interesting. It looks more standardized throughout, although whether that is by the influence of the anime production is up for debate. It could just be making things standardized for ease of drawing and audience reception. But these designs in Volume 8 don’t quite look like the BONES design, namely the lack of the pig noses / skull faces. I think it’s just as likely Ohkubo wanted things to be as standardized, as it is that Ohkubo say how animation is about standard character models for ease of work…except any illustrator would know that standard character designs are part of animation production, so, again, this seems less like “the BONES nudged Ohkubo to do this” so much as “ease of getting the manga out each month meant standardizing designs.”

And I’m ignoring where Ohkubo flexes with variations in designs for dramatic effect, such as Stein’s threatening aura and the students’ shocked reactions (and Black Star’s excitement), as well as Black Star decking Ox. 

So, it’s like the character designs are more standard after the anime would have started production, but the exaggerated reaction images seem more refined and engaging. 

It’s a mixed bag. I have been railing against the standardized designs around this point at Volume 8. But that is also letting Ohkubo have more complex exaggerated reactions by characters.

Volume 11, right around when the anime is coming out, is about the same in simplifying character designs for standardized art.

I’m not as impressed with some exaggerated art, although stuff like the Dutchman and Clown are detailed. 

Maybe some art is a little too cutesy compared to how I like my Soul Eater to be a little gothic and angular. 

There isn’t anything wrong with the Clown Maka design--it is effective body horror. But I think how much better this would look in the BONES style to be even creepier. 

And that���s not ignoring where Ohkubo gets to shine with some Mad Magazine in the Dutchman’s reactions. 

So, repeating myself, mixed bag: the designs suffer from seeming a little too standard, but the exaggerated art gets a lot better as Ohkubo does on. In that regard, I don’t think Ohkubo got pressure to be less creative and less wacky, but it seems like, by his choice or by editorial influence, he got better at choosing when to push the exaggeration for the creepy factor or the humorous factor. It creates peaks and valleys in the art. I just wish the valleys, where we get the standardized designs, looked as good as the BONES designs.

Sothoth, the Keymaster warframe

This concludes the Cthulhu Quartet, a collaborative project began by @the-tenno-tripped and finished by me. This was an incredibly entertaining project even if it did cause temporary insanity. But hey, the temporary insanity is very on brand for a set of Lovecraft inspired creations.

Health: 111 (333 at rank 30) Shields: 111 (333 at rank 30) Armor: 174 Energy: 116 (174 at rank 30) Sprint Speed: 1.15

Passive: Sothoth has a 50% chance to auto-complete hacking. This effect can stack with Auto Breach.

Ability 1: Perception, 25 energy. For the next 10 seconds Sothoth alters the perception of all enemies within 45 meters. Un-alerted enemies will become totally oblivious to the presence of Tenno, ignoring them even if attacked. Alerted enemies will become confused, having 50% reduced accuracy when attacking Tenno and having a 25% chance to attack each other instead for 5 seconds.

Ability 2: Key to the Mind, 50 energy. Sothoth attempts to penetrate the mind of a single enemy in his line of sight with a deadly spike of psychic energy. Deals 1000 void damage to the targeted enemy within 30 meters and 30 degrees of his crosshairs. If the enemy is below 25% of max health there is a 50% chance this ability will kill them instantly. If the enemy is below 15% of max health they will be killed instantly. Survivors of this ability will be vulnerable to melee finishers and stunned, unable to move or attack for 5 seconds.

Ability 3: Void Gate, 75 energy. Erects a barrier of shimmering, multicolored energy centered on a point within 10 meters of Sothoth's crosshairs and extending upwards, downwards, left, and right. The barrier begins with a radius of 5 meters and expands up to 20 meters over 3 seconds if Sothoth does not terminate the ability sooner. The barrier lasts 20 seconds, blocks enemy pathing and attacks, and cannot be damaged. Allies can move and fire through the Void Gate freely. Only one Void Gate can be deployed at a time. Re-casting Void Gate before the barrier expires will destroy it. If Sothoth is within 15 meters of the barrier when it is destroyed this way it will shatter and the shards will be flung away from him, dealing 750 slash damage with 100% status chance to all enemies in a 30 meter, 45 degree cone.

Ability 4: Open the Way, 100 energy. Sothoth's body splits apart disabling all normal attacks and advanced movement, and the multicolored vapors of the Void billow from him, forming bubbles of argon-scented rainbow clouds for 10 seconds. While Open the Way is active, Perception is automatically activated and Key to the Mind can be cast at no energy cost on a 2 second cooldown, and Sothoth takes 50% reduced damage from all sources. Allies within the bubble-clouds of Open the Way gain +100% void damage on all equipped weapons and +50% ability strength.

Subsumed Ability: Perception (range is reduced to 35 meters, duration is reduced to 7.5 seconds.)

Signature Weapons Nug: Sothoth's signature pistol, a weapon that witnesses describe 'opening up its victims like a key unlocks a jewelry box.' High rate of fire and inexplicably destructive munitions make the mere thought of this pistol inspire terror. Full-auto pistol with high rate of fire offset by low per-shot damage, and large magazine offset by slow reload. Deals roughly equal values of slash, impact, and puncture. High status chance at the cost of low crit. Headshot kills, parazon finishers, and successful console hacks will give this weapon 10 seconds of +100% crit chance. When wielded by Sothoth, kills with this weapon give Yeb +150% crit chance for 10 seconds. Yeb: A tenno throwing glaive with jagged geometric shapes hammered and ground into its blades, giving them the appearance of keys. The Yeb was typically wielded by vault guards protecting Orokin riches. Deals roughly equal values of slash, impact, and puncture. High crit at the cost of low status. Headshot kills, parazon finishers, and successful console hacks give this weapon 10 seconds of guaranteed slash procs on hit. When wielded by Sothoth, kills with this weapon give Nug +150% status chance for 10 seconds.

Closing Notes: I feel that this is the least original of the three. He has some useful abilities, for sure, and some of them are pretty flashy but... none of it feels very new. Unfortunately Yog-Sothoth is high enough up on the Lovecraft ladder that he's basically just a fucking omnipotent god and it's kind of hard to translate that into fair and balanced abilities. I am not displeased with him, I just feel that he was a poor starting point for a warframe concept.

“I don’t know why anyone would put a baby here,” Mahanon says, “Who was the dunce who thought putting a baby here would be a good idea?”

“Me, I was the dunce,” Maxwell replies, hand raised. “Oh, that sounds dumb out loud, huh? Walked straight into that one eyes wide open.”

“Did anyone expect anything else at this point?” Herah sighs. “It wasn’t just Maxwell. It was a group decision.”

“Oh, so there’s more than one person who’s mentally behind the curve in regards to basic common sense?” Mahanon challenges. “Why didn’t any of you take the baby to the appropriate child care facilities? We have those. Josephine and Edric worked very hard to make sure we had those available for the rest of the Inquisition. It was a project of passion for them for a very long time. I see no reason why this child is suddenly exempt from their hard work.”

“Well. You see. We don’t know who this baby’s parents are,” Maxwell says, idly rocking said baby in his arms as the little bundle makes upset gurgles. “And we also found this baby in an abandoned crashed car. It was a miracle you survived wasn’t it? Wasn’t it? Wasn’t it a little miracle for you?”

Mahanon makes a face as Maxwell dissolves into baby talk, turning his body away from the other man to fully face Herah.

“Bring the child to a physician,” he says.

“We did. Of course we did that. Fuck, Mahanon, what do you think we are? Idiots? Don’t answer that. Your answer will probably make me want to turn you into a pretzel.”

“I’d like to see you try.”

“We took the baby to a physician to make sure they were okay, and once we got the all clear we started doing a check for the baby’s parents. We’ve got a search running now for records and DNA matches. Please, Mahanon. We know how to do our fucking jobs.”

“And yet the baby is here. In my apartment. Which I was not in last night. Which was empty last night. You left a baby alone in my apartment.”

“We did not leave a baby alone in your apartment,” Maxwell says. “We left a baby with Grim in your apartment, and then when you came in he left. The baby was never alone.”

“Why was Grim in my apartment?”

“That part we don’t know, he was already there when we came here. Maybe Ellana or Bull told him he could crash there while they were out?”

“Why didn’t either of you take the baby to your apartments?” Mahanon asks.

“Because yours is the safest.”

Mahanon levels them both a look of utter disappointment. “You had all night to come up with a believable reason to leave a baby in my apartment and that’s the best you could come up with?”

“No, really. No one’s going to fuck with anything here,” Herah says. “An apartment run by you, Bull, and Ellana? No one’s going to mess with that. Safest place for a baby who’s parents might have been recently assassinated.”

Mahanon wordlessly points towards the front door.

“Get that baby out of this apartment before my sister and her boyfriend come back and have their mothering instincts kick in.”

“I told you that you’d love having a dog,” Evelyn says. “Well. I guess Cullen having a dog and you being housemates with Cullen.”

Leliana sighs. “I miss my nugs.”

“Where did they go?”

“Oh, they’re around. I just miss them right now, at this very specific moment, in general. They think the dog is a giant hairless friend of theirs. I think the dog thinks they’re hairless puppies.”

“As long as they get along.” Evelyn picks a bit of dog fur off of her knee. “How is vacation planning going? Have you settled everything?”

“Mostly,” Leliana replies. “I have my chain of command established and I’ve passed off my personal projects. Now it’s just a matter of trying to organize my itinerary around a dog and nugs.”

“You could leave the dog and hugs here,” Evelyn points out.

“But it’s their vacation too. If their humans get to go on vacation they should also, no?” Leliana says. “Besides, I’d feel guilty about asking Cullen to leave his dog behind if I got to bring my nugs.”

“And yet no guilt about having him leave his girlfriend behind?”

Leliana shoots Evelyn a sly look, “Oh, so it’s official then is it?”

The other woman flushes bright red, quickly looking away and leaning forward to pick up some magazines that are on the coffee table. “Oh look at that, a mail order catalogue, haven’t seen one of these in ages. Let’s take a look at it shall we? Black out curtains! Marvelous! We could use some of those.”

Leliana rolls her eyes. “You two are disasters. You could come if you wanted. There’s still time to book extra tickets.”

“No, you three have fun. You deserve it,” Evelyn waves her hand, but continues flipping through the magazine. “Some of this stuff is pretty neat. I’m going to take this with me so I can measure some things out at my place.”

“Go for it, I’m not sure who’s it is. I’m not sure how we’re getting those, frankly. Who’s sending mail order catalogues to the Inquisition?”

“Well. These guys, apparently. And aren’t they going to be surprised when they suddenly receive a bulk order from us?” Evelyn laughs. “Oh, this would look cute for your nugs.”

“Oh, let me see. I haven’t actually looked through that, you know. We mostly just throw our mail on the coffee table and pick out the important things and then throw the rest away when it gets too horrendous to look at.”

“That’s an incredibly good strategy for dealing with mail and I wish I could do the same,” Evelyn says. “But if I did that I think Josephine would kill me dead on the spot and then throw my corpse away once it gets unpleasant.”
