wind-sage replied to this post:
it is a really fun compare and contrast between Leia I am FULLY an Organa and Luke I am a Skywalker. Neither is Wrong, just important to respect the others choice with it.
Yes, I agree! Their experiences and identities wrt the family members who raised them are often framed as equivalent, but in the OT, they really do seem to relate to each of their families in very different ways.
Leia is not indifferent to her biological parents; she has a tie to Padmé through the Force that lingers with her and matters to her, and it's very upsetting for Leia to find out her natural father is Darth Vader. But the Organas are no less her parents for that. To Leia, "my father" means Bail Organa as much as it invariably means Anakin Skywalker to Luke. She is Bail and Breha's daughter and heir in every way that matters, the princess of Alderaan to her fingertips. Even her blood relationship to Luke only reinforces the close friendship that already exists between them, and would probably matter much less to her without the pre-existing relationship and accompanying Force bond.
But all suggestion in the OT is that Luke was raised as a beloved nephew with his father's and grandmother's name, not a son in the way Leia is a daughter. And it's a potentially dangerous name, at that, which only reinforces the importance in that family situation of honoring Anakin and Shmi in how Luke was brought up to think of himself. Luke's powerful consciousness of himself as Anakin's son doesn't seem just his own thing or conflict at all with how Owen and Beru talk about Luke's tie to Anakin, but rather, reflects it— they say "your father" or "his father" to refer to Anakin and are extremely aware of Luke's legacy from Anakin (and presumably Shmi).
The fostering of a relative's child within the family can often be complex in that way, even IRL, so this isn't even improbable. And given that Owen is Luke's uncle because Owen's father bought and then freed and married Luke's grandmother who died horribly later on, it's not surprising that they would have qualms about erasing the Skywalker history or that the general family dynamic might be a bit more fraught. Luke pretty emphatically does not see Beru as his mother, despite his affection for her; he refers to Padmé as Leia's "real mother" and adds "I have no memory of my mother. I never knew her"—clearly he can only mean Padmé. It seems to me that he's digging for information about Padmé because her absence represents a different kind of loss for him than it does for Leia herself.
And yeah, I could see the disparity in their experiences being something they have to navigate later on, but ultimately the only way to fully reconcile that, IMO, is for them to realize that their family dynamics and sense of legacy were fundamentally not the same and they're not going to relate to their parents the same ways.

people from the USA thought about a post nuclear war and came up with Fallout - cowboys, knights, surviving rich people in safe vaults, all in a funny and colourful world ready to be explored.
people from now Russia thought about a post nuclear war and came up with Metro 2033 - a handful of starving survivors in the metro underground system of Moscow split in various factions like the Hanse, the communists Red Line, the fascist 4th Reich with people barely making it everyday without dying in a bleak world.

Oddly specific but did anyone else's parents describe brutal torture methods in excruciating detail to them (under the pretense that they could/would happen to them) or was that just me?
#if anyone is wondering the context for telling a child (yeah i was about 8 or smthn) these things i shall explain#tw for holocaust mention#so my parents were pretty extreme in their religion- they called themselves Christians but were perhaps closer to some cults#and my parents held the general belief that a lot of shit would go down during or before the rapture- that is the second coming of god#not just plagues wars and pestilence but also a second holocaust#in which gunmen working under the antichrist would break into every home and shoot anyone who didnt renounce god#(btw this was considered the only 'unforgivable' sin in their religion meaning you either get shot or go to hell)#so i was of course encouraged to get shot in this scenario. at 8 years old#not only that but apparently for some reason they (the gunman/antichrist people) were going to take us to... camps essentially#and use various torture methods trying to get us to join them#a lot of those torture methods were described to me- things like removing fingernails the brazen bull and rat torture#and i was always terrified of those things#i was also told very emphatically that this WOULD happen in my lifetime. the rapture that is not necessarily torture#but it was just always a possibility that one day i would have to be a martyr#i used to have a lot of nightmares about the rapture happening and how i had chosen wrong and denounced god#scared me half to death#oh yeah i was also told there would be nuclear war? so i was always irrationally afraid of that too#everytime i heard an airplane i would think it was a bomb#anyway this is why i appreciate people not trying to reconvert me as you can imagine this sucked

2023 reads
The Last
slow building apocalyptic thriller
an american academic is at a conference in a remote Swiss hotel when a nuclear apocalypse strands him with just 20 others
50 days in, a body is found in a watertank and he becomes obsessed with investigating to find out who did it
even though the remaining people are just trying to quietly survive as supplies slowly dwindle and the winter approaches
#the last#hanna jameson#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#so I read this because there’s an aromantic side character!#she’s an interesting/complex character who has a friends w benefits thing with the MC#a few stereotypes but like she actively counters them#the only weird thing about it is that it’s implied she’s a republican who voted for the ppl who started the nuclear war…..#like. would a right wing person identify as aro lmao#but also like i’m okay with not all ‘representation’ being good people.#as for the rest of the actual book i found it quite interesting overall!#i enjoyed that it wasn’t just 'fighting dangerous people to survive' immediately like a lot of the postapoc genre#(though i wonder how much food they had to be fine for 2 months??)#though there is a bit of that in places when they leave the hotel#a lot of interesting characters and like.....discussion on what different kinds of people would do in that situation#the australian accent (audiobook) of the australian character…..not sure about that LMAO#also I don’t believe the internet would still function after half the world has blown up? like this thing needs upkeep right#there’s a bit where the MC is talking to two dudes who start talking like: so are we gonna repopulate society?#and being creepy about the women. and the MC is obviously like: yikes!#but also nobody even suggests like……we could just die? without repopulating humanity whatever the fuck that means?#why is that concept not even brought up?????? i am horrified that anyone would consider having children in that scenario. christ.#anyway i guess yeah overall a few things im like hm about but it's a pretty good book#aromantic books#(also the MC has a wife on the other side of the world but like. there's not any actual romance. his thing with the aro woman is offpage)

I do not think you can have a meaninful criticism of Oppenheimer without addressing how much erasing his jewishness and the holocaust from the narrative removes context for his fear and actions

Hm. Probably not great how there's just. A whole school district. That faces a greater threat of nuclear annihilation than other school districts. And we face that threat blithely.

Can we survive a Nuclear War,... the government thinks so.....
Tumblr media
Did ya know the CIA and other government agencies with names no one knows believe it is possible that the US could win a nuclear war. They believed that if the US launched a massive attack at the right time, there would be little chance of inflicting proportional damage on the US, and over 50% of Americans could survive the fallout from other nations as it circled the earth.
The fact that they are contemplating winning a nuclear war is astounding to say the least, not to mention writing-off HALF of the American people in this power play, and because they have the resources to play and survive the game, YOU DON'T.
These are real research projects done by our government, funded by you the taxpayer to establish if a nuclear war scenario is winnable............. I mean just look at the many government grants that are given to movies, documentaries and television series about what life might be like after a nuclear war happens , like it's just another tragedy that's bound to happen as the risk of nuclear war has increased dramatically in the past two years as the United States and Russia have abandoned long-standing nuclear arms control treaties, and then started to develop new kinds of nuclear weapons that could just kill biological units (people) and leave the structures alone so they could be re-occupied when the dust settles, saving billions in construction costs, and expanded the circumstances in which they might use nuclear and bio-weapons,........... like we're getting ready for it.
Hmmmm, now I'm thinking about the COVID virus, wonder why?!?!
Was that a test to see how a bio-weapon might work and spread?
Our intelligence community's know it's coming so they are paving the way to life after the nukes like it's a fucking tornado or tsunami that will just pass like every other tragedy that happens, and it will be survable??????
The world remains the closest it has ever been to the symbolic hour of the shit hitting the fan (apocalypse), with the Doomsday Clock set once again to 90 seconds to “midnight” for 2024, as Wars in the Middle East, Ukraine, a spiraling climate crisis and the rise of artificial intelligence are among the threats continuing to put human existence out-of-the-picture and let artificial intelligence do the driving for us,..........WTF!
The Doomsday Clock, which has been used for seven decades now, was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947 amid Cold War nuclear tensions — and is seen as “a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to global catastrophe caused by man-made technologies.
Make no mistake: resetting the Clock at 90 seconds to midnight is not an indication that the world is stable. Quite the opposite.
"Will my cell phone still work after a nuclear war?"
That's the logic of the situation with most people, and we will know about it when we see that mushroom cloud in the sky........... because we keep voting for the same damn political parties that are interested in winning a nuclear war scenario, which are Republican and Democrats BOTH! But they won't tell you about it, and you won't hear about it in any campaign speeches,.....because if they did you would want to know "what's being done for your survival?",.....
I mean like the government has built massive underground facilities for their own people, but your not scheduled to go there in the event of a nuclear war,... Hell you're not on the schedule at all.
Just saying, government is looking out for government and you the taxpayer who pays for it all must take care of your own ass without the government's help, because dead people can't sue the government for negligence.....
Vote both parties out of office or dig a great big fucking hole in your backyard to live in for 6 months to wait for the fallout to fade.
......Yeah, I know,.... it's a little bit funny to some people to even talk about this crap,......... and I don't delude myself thinking that everyone is all-of-a-sudden going to vote for an independent humanitarian government that could avoid tragic events in our and our children's futures,........ I'm just saying it all starts with YOU, and then maybe someone else might see your wisdom and then maybe someone else and so on, and so on.
Because industry who started this ball rolling will oppose any efforts to vote out all Republicans and Democrats, because industry OWNS our political leaders with their financial support, and they would lose their grip on America if the American people take back their own government and tell industry what they can and can't do.
It's all up to you, and if you don't care, no one else is gonna care either.
See ya at the voting booth.
