Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, York, Maine. Perhaps the most famous resident of Nubble Light was Mr. T, the 20 pound ginger-striped tom cat. He occupied the small offshore island in the 1930s and 40s, under the watch of multiple lighthouse keepers. According to keeper Eugene Coleman, after Mr. T had killed all the mice on the island, the cat swam over to the mainland and returned with a fresh mouse.

Nubble Light, Cape Neddick, York, Maine - Dec. 22, 2024

Naturally, on the day we decided to drive up to see the Christmas lights on the Cape Neddick lighthouse in York, Maine, it was the coldest day of the year so far -- 13 degrees when we got there (just after sunset, second photo), "feels like" 1 degree F. Thank god, there was almost no wind. Still couldn't keep my bare hand out for more than a minute or two to take photos.

Fox's Lobster House is located right next to the little park on the end of Cape Neddick, from which you can view the lighthouse, and it does this "christmas tree" made out of lobster traps every year. (A lot of places in Maine do this.)

At bottom, photos from my friends who were with me: the image produced when one turned while the photo was still being taken; the plaque about the park; and a photo of me, bundled against the cold, getting ready to take another photo.

The Cape Neddick Light is a lighthouse in Cape Neddick, York, Maine. In 1874 Congress appropriated $15,000 to build a light station at the "Nubble" and in 1879 construction began. Cape Neddick Light Station was dedicated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service and put into use in 1879. It is still in use today. Taken June 25th, 2009.
