What I'm Reading

This is more like a textbook for a college class, but I'm nerdy and interested enough to read it for fun. Lots of great things were brought up in the book that, although I can't recall them all, helped me to understand what life was like in the time of Christ. The topics covered are pretty broad, such as Greco-Roman morality, the religious background of the New Testament, Roman Law, Roman society, and there are even chapters on travel, clothing, and daily life. Recommended for anyone who needs a refresher course on the NT world or needs practice putting on their "first century glasses."

This is the book really challenging me right now. As the name implies, this book brings a whole new mindset for how youth ministry should be done. And I have to say the evidence is pretty compelling. Devries shows over and over again through studies and experience the reality that no matter what you do as a youth minister, if you aren't connecting kids to other adults as well as their families, you are failing them. In the future I want to take a closer look and implement some of the ideas he proposes.
