"WE JUST HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS FOR YOU..."
Following what the citizens of Northpoint have already been referring to - discretly, of course - as the Fire & Ice Incident, the Winthrop police have been meeting with citizens to get their takes on the life and death of James Buchanan. It's all run of the mill sort of stuff, but you never know what might be a break in the case, or a cause for suspicion... Details: Tag your responses with nprptask1, please! Please feel free to answer these however you see fit - it can be a third-person self-para sort of response, or first-person 'verbal' responses to each question. Feel free to take liberties and invent your own stories - after all, conflicting stories only help to turn the police in circles.
"How well did you know James Buchanan?" "What were you doing between the hours of two and three thirty on Friday morning? Can anyone confirm this?" "Have you seen anything suspicious around Northpoint, recently? People where they shouldn't be... people not where they should be...?" "Have you ever heard of the Siren Curse?"

what we know ; tw death, tw drug use
08:04pm : The first call to James's phone goes unanswered. 08:09pm : The second call to James's phone goes unanswered. 08:11pm : The third call to James's phone goes unanswered. 08:15pm : The fourth call to James's phone goes unanswered. 08:15pm : The fifth call to James's phone goes unanswered. 08:15pm : The sixth call to James's phone goes unanswered. 08:22pm : James Buchanan is late for the Ball. 08:22pm : The fifteen are incomplete. The praesul aren't pleased. 08:30pm - 10:27pm : James Buchanan arrives at the Ball. He is in good spirits, and spends the night socializing and dancing with friends. By all accounts, it is a successful apperance. However, he is cagey to his friends and declines to tell them what he was doing that he ran late, or why he wasn't answering his phone. 08:30pm - 10:27pm : His friends share quiet speculation. The distance is already growing, even if they can't feel it ----- in hindsight, they will realize that they were just as complicit as the praesul for what happens later. 10:27pm : The group grows tired of the ball and decide to move on to the afterparty at Banshee. 11:41pm : Things take a sharper downward turn. Whether it's the shifting of the lights or the pounding of the music, things begin to shake apart. 12:01am : With every drink he takes, James Buchanan grows more paranoid. He is convinced that people are watching them, and him, specifically. 1:10am : He becomes convinced that it is their praesul themselves, and becomes belligerent, knocking over glasses and fighting with friends who try to settle him down.
1:30am : Eventually, James and a small group of friends leave Banshee, arguing. They call him paranoid; he calls them blind. They struggle to quiet him before bystanders can hear their argument. 1:40am : A friend gets James Buchanan settled down, and leads him to the Tome & Grave afterparty. 1:45am : The party is grandiose. The vices are plenty. 2:22am : James Buchanan takes up root at a private, out-of-the-way table, where he can watch the party; his eyes are wild and shifty, and someone, noticing his discomfort, goes to sit with him. 2:48am : James Buchanan begins to cry. 2:50am : James Buchanan pleads for his life. 2:55am : James Buchanan is injected with a lethal dose of opioids. 2:56am : James Buchanan begins to die. 2:57am : Members of Tome & Grave notice his distress. Some attempt to help. Others merely watch ---- it is gruesome entertainment. 3:07am : James Buchanan ceases to exist. 3:10am : The praesul usher the remaining members away. They are spirited into the darkness. A perfect disappearance. 8:06pm : A text arrives to all members' phones: the rule of fourteen keeps us together. bury his bones.

Fireworks shrieked and whistled high overhead, the sparks dying out long before they touched the ground. And yet - Davis Neal was feeling electric, like every explosion and every drop of the beat roaring from one of the cars nearby was pulsing through him, lighting him up. His fingers itched for something - a fight, a drink, a pill, all of the above - and as he shouldered through the crowd, he kept an eye open for any takers.

The night smells like salt and sulfur, and the waves crash like the ocean is trying to swallow the world whole. Your ears are still echoing with the last explosion, the light and color still dancing beneath your eyelids. You see two worlds: fireworks blossoming above; the sparks falling like decaying leaves into the ocean below. The fuses shriek when they light, and whir into the darkness leaving trails like the ancient cracks of a marble statue. You think you feel the ground shake. The night sky is cracking open ---- something desperately wants in. Another shriek; another deafening boom, another explosion of color. Another shriek - closer. Another shriek, louder. Another shriek, another ------------
“Something has happened,” your neighbor says, peering into the screaming, hungry darkness like it may whisper the truth. And perhaps it will. “Something bad.”
Saltwater and time have worn at the body, but not at the rope: it has remained looped around James Buchanan’s wrists and ankles. The rope securing him to one of the so-called Siren Boulders did neither fray nor break, not even when curiosity pulled the rope taught and reeled the body back to shore, breaking from the froth like something terribly old and terribly wonderful - an ancient god, making his long awaited reappearance. Things move quick, after that. Without anyone to signal to the firemen lighting the fuses, the fireworks continue. Each flash reveals the blanched face of another attendee - they are not allowed to leave yet, but each ꜰʟᴀsʜ and ʙᴏᴏᴍ makes the crowd feel sick. What had they been missing, beneath the echoing noise and blinding light? On the ground, the police sirens roar and their lights flash a mottled, red and blue morse code into the darkness ----- SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS DETAILS : James Buchanan was a student at Winthrop, and a familiar face around town. He was last seen at the ball's after party late Thursday night, surrounded with friends and strangers alike at Banshee. We are still awaiting the coroner's report.

It happens, as it does, every year – that is to say, without warning. One evening, Northpoint’s residents retire inside for the evening, trading in the neighborly hustle and bustle of the cold sidewalks for their elaborate table dressings and roaring fires. They put on their nighttime finery and slip into bed, perhaps looking forward to their day off or finishing up that last report for school or work and getting one day closer to the weekend. Alarms are set, eyemasks are applied, and the town waits for dawn. Even that first, weak morning light reveals something… strange. Elaborate ice sculptures have wandered into the town gardens: scenes of whimsy and fantasy, captured in crystal. (Rumor has it, if you’re very patient, you can see them move.) A small sign, propped nearby in the snow, announces that you can add your own bit of artwork to the ice museum – already, excited groups are breaking off, discussing their ideas for this year’s sculpture. No ----- the winter festival came without warning, but that doesn’t mean the good citizens of Northpoint weren’t looking forward to it. The young and the young-at-heart race for the ice rink set up in the town center, where a winter garden complete with gazebos, benches, and twinkling lights beckon at those who need a break from the ice. Elsewhere, Northpoint’s artists and young artists from the university are setting up shop at the small pop-up shots that appeared along the wharfs at the shopping center. From romantic seascapes to edgy political statements, the art market is the perfect excuse to stroll the wharfs with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee (and if you’re with the right company, you might just have a flask to spike it with) from Franco’s or the grocer’s. In the evenings, the hot chocolate is paired with the finest reds and whites for evening wine tastings at Franco’s whilst couples and groups of friends wander and weave and consider the art. Later, faces across Northpoint light up as they find a simple, snow white envelope in their postbox - there's no return address, and only their family names embossed on the front in real gold leaf, an invitation to a ball to be held at the Town Hall. Balls are neither rare nor new in Northpoint, but they are always lavish and allow for all the glamour and drama of eras gone by, all with the trappings of truly opulent wealth. The next evening, whether hungover or fresh as a daisy, townspeople young and old alike drag blankets and sleeping bags to the beach. Known - unofficially, of course - as Fire and Ice, bonfires and fire pits blaze on while flasks, snacks, and stories are shared while the townspeople mingle and celebrate another winter. Though it's a far cry from the quiet celebrations that those first Dutch settlers may have enjoyed, each year's Winter Festival is something to be remembered. So put on your favorite sweater and warmest socks, get looking for the perfect gown or suit, and cozy up to someone special ---- because the festival has come to town!
