#now we actually do have examples in the fossil record of creatures becoming less spiky upon growing up

I came up with another awful idea for why transformers sparklings might be all scrappy and sharp and pointy.
In nature, when an animal has to worry about being swallowed whole, they evolve a bunch of spines, often can roll into a ball, and occasionally can move these spines. Such examples include pufferfish, lionfish, hedgehogs, porcupines, the spiny tenric and the echidna.
Now predacons are pretty big and sparklings are pretty small—
#now we actually do have examples in the fossil record of creatures becoming less spiky upon growing up#that's the current theory on the dracorex/stygimoloch/pachycephalus situation is#the horns around the dome grew smaller as they grew up#at this point the feral sparkling post has broke containment and I'm just obsessed with my ''this action will have consequences'' post#this would also explain why predacons have grabbing mandibles#and i mean. it's canon that predacons killed and ate things to get energon#might also be why Cybertronus cybertronii initially evolved the ability to transform— to make their form less palatable to predators#tf worldbuilding?
