What exactly is Chromecast, and how does it work?

Chromecast is a plug-in video streaming device from Google that works similarly to a Roku or Apple TV device. It allows you to download streaming applications and watch them on your television via your WiFi network.

Cant See Amazon Echo Speaker Group On Spotify App

For some reason my (brand new) Echo dot won’t connect to the other wi-fi. I navigate to the network settings in the app, hit “change”, put the Echo in setup mode, enter the log in credentials for the new wi-fi. Alexa gives a confirmation that it’s connected but when I reopen the app I see it’s just reverting back to the old one each time. Actually these two Echo Dots are not shown in Spotify app from my family member devices. When I change the setup in Alexa to link it to my Spotify Family Premium main account, then the Echo Dots are showing up in my Spotify app (signed in from my iPhone and iPad). But from the Spotify app from my family members, signed in on their own Spotify accounts, they cannot see the Echo Dots as Spotify Connect devices. 1) Is it possible to allow all my spotify accounts that are in my family account to.

I set up a few groups through the Alexa app, one that includes all three Echos, and two more containing different combinations. However Spotify Connect will only display one group at a time. Above, only the Everywhere group containing all three Echos appears in Spotify Connect. If I switch to that group it's still the only group that appears. Glad to see this rolling out. I was under the impression that this was already the case. I just got my second echo device yesterday, so I was really disappointed when it said it can’t do Spotify multi room. If the speaker does not appear on the list, try the following: Clear the Spotify app cache (usually done via the Settings menu). Restart your phone/tablet/PC. Unplug the Play-Fi product, and plug it back in. Make sure the Play-Fi product firmware version is 1.4.0.045 (or higher). I still see them in the Google home app but can't connect to them via spotify. If I disable wifi they show up for a second and if I'm fast enough I can connect to them before they vanish again. All speakers are in the same WiFi and my router is set up to allow communication between devices. Well, it worked on day 1 so there wasn't any issue. The Echo and Echo Dot both support multiroom audio - but the Tap does not. Chris Monroe/CNET Only the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Show are supported (sorry, Tap).

Is the iPhone 4S a Huge Waste of Money? Find Out Why You Should Keep Your iPhone 4 and Not Upgrade

With the iPhone 4S on the market it's only natural to question whether you should buy that or the older model iPhone 4. I didn't have this option when I purchased the iPhone 4 because the 4S wasn't out at the time, and by the time you purchase your iPhone there will probably be about 10 other newer versions out. Of course I'm kidding but apple do tend to release a new iPhone every year. dq-solutions

Should you buy an iPhone 4?

The answer of this question ultimately comes down to your preference. Personally I haven't yet tried the iPhone 4S so I can't comment on how good that device is, however from looking at the phones specifications and user reviews for the extra money you would pay for the 4S I think personally I would prefer to save some money and stick with the iPhone 4.

Blackberry users thinking of making a switch should note that iPhone's now come with something called iMessage, and basically it's a free way of communicating with other iPhone users just like Blackberry messenger.

The iMessage feature really isn't that big of a deal to me as my network provider already gives me unlimited texts in my price plan, but if you haven't got unlimited texts and you have a lot of friends using an iPhone then this feature will save you a ton of money. iIMessage also allows you to send images to your friends free of charge.

Processing Power of the iPhone 4

If you have done your research into mobile phones then you will know that some mobile phones have dual cores, without getting two technical the more cores you have the better processing power your phone is going to have. There are other factors that come into play such as the clock speed of these cores but like I said for the purpose of this review I won't get too technical. The iPhone 4 only has a 1GHZ single core processor whereas the newer model phones such as the Samsung Galaxy 2 have 2 cores. This however shouldn't put you off as the iPhone will handle all the tasks you want it to. I have only ever found the phone to go slow when you are running multiple apps simultaneously.

iPhone 4 Phone Design

iPhone 3 and 3GS users will be used to their sleek looking device with the curved plastic back, and I must admit I loved this design, so when the iPhone 4 came along with its rectangular and flat design I was rather put off and thought initially that it was borderline ugly.

Without a phone case there is no question that I still prefer the feel to the 3GS over the 4 but with a case I find the iPhone 4 easier to grip and it feels like a much more solid mobile phone.

The iPhone 4 is much different from its little brother the 3GS its much more compact but still weights 137g, so you get a much smaller yet compact device that feels solid. The side of the phone is stainless steel where the front and back are made out of some type of reinforced glass.

I have seen one review website saying that one of their employees has dropped this phone out of a low level window and nothing happened to the phone, now sorry I don't believe this at all. Maybe they wrapped the device in bubble wrap first and then tried it, but otherwise this device will crack. Having said that if you drop this phone from your pocket to the ground then you shouldn't receive any problems, but just to make sure I would recommend getting a cheap case off eBay or somewhere like that.

iPhone 4 Camera

I have never used an iPhone camera previously to owning this iPhone 4 so I wasn't sure of the quality that the phone would produce. On using the camera I very much like it, I think the quality of image is great the colors are realistic and the built in flash is pretty good but can sometimes overexpose the image. I often find myself using the built in flash as a torch with the iTorch4 app. The HDR mode is also pretty cool and what this mode does is take 3 different exposure levels and blend them together to give a cool looking image.

The high definition video recording is also something I wasn't expecting from a mobile phone and I was surprised when I saw that the iPhone 4 had it. Once again the quality is excellent and Apple has done a good job with implementing this into such a small device.

The iPhone 4 has 2 cameras built into it and I probably should have mentioned this earlier. One of the cameras faces outwards and this is the camera I discussed above and one of the cameras faces inwards. This camera is useful for the face time application. This application is like a webcam that allows you to talk to other iPhone/iPad users. Face time allows both parties to see each other and communicate. The camera that is used for this isn't as good as the main camera in my opinion and often gives a darker and grainier picture.

iPhone 4 web browsing

Before owning the iPhone 4 I owned a blackberry curve 8900 and web browsing on that mobile phone was painfully slow and quite often didn't even work. In fact I would say the Blackberry 8900 web capabilities were nonexistent. Upgrading to the iPhone was amazing. As I mentioned above, previous to owning this phone I owned a Blackberry 8900 and although that phone was rubbish the battery life was pretty good. I could easily go a day and half without charging it, with the iPhone this isn't the case.

The iOS 5 update also uses up more battery power again, but don't be alarmed, I use my phone all day and have never run out yet, although I have come pretty close.

33 tips to avoid getting hacked (save the student)

Get yourself decent anti-virus and firewall software – and turn it on! Some insurance companies and banks only cover fraud and theft if you can prove you had security in place.

Back-up important data on an external hard drive or USB stick. If there’s something that you’d be gutted to lose, keep copies!

Be picky about which companies you share your personal info with – your data’s only as secure as they are.

Be very suspicious of emails or messages asking for login or account info, and check that any links are legit (i.e. not hsbo-bank.co.uk) and secure (https not http). This is known as phishingand is one of the easiest ways for passwords to be nicked.

Most cloud storage is snoopable: encrypt the content you keep in them, or check out Dropbox(which claims to encrypt all files stored).

Only log in to accounts from your own gadgets. If you do have to use a public or shared device, make sure you log out afterwards.

Where possible, buy online using a credit card. If you're a victim of fraud you'll have a better chance of getting your money back. If you can't get accepted for a credit card, use a prepaid card instead – while this won't insure your stolen cash, hackers will only have access to what you've topped up rather than your entire bank balance.

If there’s something you really, really don’t want anyone else to know or get hold of, don’t put it online!

Use an unusual but memorable phrase, and replace letters with numbers or punctuation marks (0 instead of o, or 3 for E).

Never use real answers in security questions – make up memorable answers that will only make sense to you.

Change passwords at least a couple of times a year: get fresh ones, and don’t just swap around the ones you already use!

Get LastPass – seriously. It's all very well (and essential) having long and unique passwords for each site, but you'll never remember them without a password manager. LastPass is the most popular free solution for storing them all and integrates easily as a browser extension (and app).

Use two-step verification if it’s available for logins: if someone signs in from a new or unauthorised device, they’ll have to provide a code that’s only sent to your phone or email address.

Don’t use an easily-guessed email – like [email protected] – for logging into sites holding sensitive information (like online banking). Use alias emails that you can simply forward to your main account.

In fact, use alias emails for all aspects of your online life: work, personal stuff, surveys, memes, whatever. This will limit what info hackers can access (and how much spam you get!).

Forced to enter an email address but worried you’re going to be inundated with spam afterwards? Use one you can burn when you’re done! You can create a temporary email that will combust after use over on guerrillamail.com.

If your email account displays the location of the last login (Gmail does – check the bottom of the screen), take a look at it every now and again to spot any rogue usage.

Check your privacy settings: don’t broadcast every update to the whole world. Log out every now and again to view your profile how strangers will be able to see it.

Don’t accept friend requests from folk you don’t know (obviously!)

Enable login alerts to get beeped when someone signs into your account. On Facebook, you can turn it on through Security Settings (approve your own devices so you don’t get pointless alerts!)

Be careful what you share on social, especially your date of birth or any info banks use to verify accounts or lost passwords.

Review app permissions: whenever you log in to another site using Facebook or add an app to your account, you've opened another door for personal data leakage. See what info you're handing out here.

Always lock your phone using either fingerprint recognition, a secure PIN (not your birthday) or unique gesture.

Know how to wipe your gadgets if they're lost or stolen.

Put a sticker over any unused webcams (hackers could be watching you).

Read app permissions to see exactly what data you’re allowing them to access before you install them.

Install Find My iPhone (Apple) or make sure you've set up Find My Device on Android. Prey is also excellent for tracking, locking and wiping missing phones and laptops.

Always password protect your home WiFi network, and change the default admin password on your internet routers.

Remember that public WiFi has more holes than Swiss cheese – everything you do while connected can be spied on.

Only use well-known or reputable WiFi hotspots – setting up fake free networks is a common sting.

Turn off sharing, so that things you usually connect or share on a secure network (files, devices or logins) aren’t discoverable.

Use a VPN – Virtual Private Network – to 'cloak' yourself and your data. Private Internet Accessis our favourite due to ease of setup, privacy settings and security features.

Only visit secure sites: check for the padlock and ‘https’ in the address bar.

Afternoon of procrastination and frustration... plan was to create a video for YouTube, using shorter videos on Adobe Premier Rush, that I had shot from the car on my iPhone, on a trip to Narrabri (Shoot date 04OCT19). Firstly I went to check what date I was looking for... proceeded to update my calendar... then found dates and couldn't find file.. realised that I had done on my phone and files would not be with files that I had shot on my camera... went to dropbox to download from my Camera Uploads file (too big to keep on my computer) - computer freezing.. too many things open... restart computer.. download videos (20 min process.. fold washing, go watch the Cox Plate) Click file to unzip.. error.. no such file... try again.. no such file.. in the process of downloading again.. first estimate was 4 hours.. thankfully back to 18 mins now - fingers crossed.. I'm at the 'I just want to get it done' stage and don't care about the creativity... sigh

Will have to try downloading a few at a time.. (what kind of computer am I going to have to buy if I ever do this professionally? Already using a $2k iMac 😞 )

It's working doing a few files at a time... discussion with husband - maybe internet connection? Currently using WiFi, he will make me an ethernet cable to see if that helps..not today though.

Continued working on video... added on to cutstory, trialling 15 sec cuts, and researched tags on instagram, posted via Instagram app, pushed to Tumblr too. Not sure I'm keen on the 15 sec 'Instagram' length - going to go back to the 1 minute videos. Have added two videos together and cut. Posted the first to Instagram, added 'Moon' filter (monochromatic), pushed to Tumblr as well. Thinking about timing of posts.. Sunday afternoon.. will try a couple of more tonight.

After viewing and sorting videos I added to Adobe Premier Pro Rush - muted the sound - wanted to try without any sound - similar to videos I had seen in the National Gallery of Art. Trialling transitions too.

Wifi 6??

While 5G is the talk of the town, WiFi still has a place in the world, and there’s a new version of it you should know about.

The Wi-Fi Alliance announced Monday that it would start offering WiFi 6 certifications to device manufacturers. That means the non-profit group will make sure WiFi 6 devices are all up to the same technical standards, and if they are, there will be a badge on the packaging to let you know.

That’s all well and good, but what does that actually mean? Luckily, we’re here to explain everything to you.

What’s so great about WiFi 6?

WiFi 6 is a new version of the same WiFi you’ve been using for more than a decade, but faster and more efficient. Just as mobile internet jumped from 3G to 4G, and is upgrading to 5G this year, WiFi technology has gradually improved over the years.

Since we constantly ask for more from our internet, such as streaming 4K movies and even entire video games, it only makes sense that our WiFi should get better.

The main thing you need to know is that it provides much, much faster speeds than the WiFi we all use right now. According to CNET’s testing, it can outpace the average download speed in the United States by around 1,000 percent.

Yeah, that’s fast. One of the other selling points, per the Wi-Fi Alliance, is that WiFi 6 can perform better in crowded environments where a lot of devices are connected to a single network. Internet speeds in sports stadiums or other packed venues could be significantly better with WiFi 6.

Sounds great! Does that mean my devices will all be faster now?

Right now, not really. We’re still in the early stages of WiFi 6 deployment, and devices need to be built with the standard in mind to take advantage of it.

To be clear, that is absolutely happening. Companies like Netgear have already produced a handful of WiFi 6-compatible routers, while the Samsung Galaxy S10 and iPhone 11 both support the standard, too. That said, these devices are all held back by ISPs in the U.S.

It’s great that WiFi 6 can achieve download speeds of well above 1,000 Mbps, but most home networks can’t support that right now. If you buy a WiFi 6-compatible device but your home internet package only goes up to 200 Mbps, it’s a little bit like using a 5G phone in a 4G network. It’ll work and you’ll be fine, but it won’t feel any different from what you’re used to.

Even if WiFi 6 doesn’t work for most people or devices in 2019, it’s important that standards are set now to make sure it works well once the infrastructure is in place. It could be a few years before you start seeing tangible effects from the WiFi 6 rollout, but rest assured that it’s happening.

As someone who makes a living doing travel for business, I have a few items that I would highly recommend for any business trip. Most of these items are small and lightweight, perfect for fitting into a suitcase. After a few mistakes and mishaps over the years, I won’t travel without them.

Whether you’re traveling to give an important presentation or want to ease anxiety by having a backpack plan, these 7 items will leave you prepared.

1. Smart luggage.

There’s a good chance you’ve felt the pain of a low cell phone battery and no place to charge it in an airport. This can be especially stressful if you need your phone to navigate an unfamiliar place. Smart luggage is a nice option in situations such as this.

Most smart luggage cases can register the weight of the bag, plus provide a GPS location (a reassurance if you’ve ever had a lost or delayed bag), remote lock functions, and the ability to power your phone via a luggage battery. However, be aware that a number of airlines now require the battery to be removable — a decision that has put a few smart luggage companies out of business.

2. Microprojector.

This is one of those items that you didn’t know you needed until you one day need it. A microprojector ensures that your work gets seen in the event of an unpredictable circumstance. Some of these devices are smaller than an iPhone yet are still able to deliver on sound and picture quality.

I once had to present an idea to a small group of investors. As my luck had it, a pipe had burst in the room where we were supposed to meet, leaving me with nothing but my laptop to present. Thankfully, one of the staff members had bought a microprojector to watch movies and was able to lend it to me for this occasion.

3. Portable scanner.

This is a necessity if you are attending a major conference with many vendors. Many of these scanners are cordless and can connect to email or apps like Dropbox. Some of these can scan nearly 30 pages in less than a minute. Sizes vary but most can easily fit in the crook of a suitcase and are lightweight.

I’ve gone to travel fairs and used a portable scanner to get information back to my team quickly. It helps us stay organized and I don’t end up with a bunch of pamphlets and papers in my suitcase. I also use it to upload receipts to keep track of my expenses.

4. Multifunctional pen/stylus/USB drive.

A pen with a stylus makes sense. But the additional flash drive that’s included makes this item one of my staples. This 3-in-1 deal makes my life easier and always becomes a conversation starter. They are surprisingly ergonomic and still allow for beautiful penmanship.

5. Portable router.

A portable router is almost a requirement, depending on how secluded your destination is. These devices offer additional safety when working online by providing a private network. It can also be cheaper than finding WiFi in a remote location or using your phone to tether.

Some of these routers can provide service in over 100+ countries while also charging your devices. I’ve had to use this a couple of times when my internet has been dicey and have never regretted the investment.

6. Virtual keyboard.

I know this one is a little out there but a virtual keyboard is a great way to work if you don’t have access to your computer. If you’ve ever tried to type a lengthy document on a phone or iPad, you know how it can be a struggle to work quickly and correctly. This helpful device is a portable keyboard without the bulk of a physical keyboard.

If using, I recommend projecting the keyboard onto a piece of paper and on a hard surface. This will help you type more efficiently and make it easier to view. Just watch out for cats who might view it as a toy.

7. Collar stay and shirt travel pouch.

A collar stay is exactly what it sounds like – a little metal object that helps the collar stay in place. A shirt travel pouch is another useful item. It’s like a laptop case but for your individual shirt. These items are cheap, effortless, and can keep you looking professional.

I’ve found both of these items to be essentials, especially if I have to head straight to a meeting after arriving at the airport. Collar stays are those life-hack items that everyone should own, as they are sure to come in handy at some point.

While most of these items aren’t necessary, they can definitely make life on the road easier.
