English Speaking Leijiverse fandom has always been 20 people spread across multiple places, Harlock has the most works (429 total, 268 in English if you're curious) but it having that 2013 cgi movie I felt did a lot for it.
This isn't about Harlock though.
Galaxy Express 999? The work that is definitely what Leiji Matsumoto was most known for, besides Space Battleship Yamato? 32 works. If you want to filter out crossovers with other Leijiverse series its 7.
And this will be an ongoing theme, since the Leijiverse lends itself, and very often does crossover various other series and characters with each other. People do enjoy that crossover aspect though, myself included. It's a massive draw of the world Matsumoto made, but that's a post for another day.
But if you were in the mood to read something that only takes place in just one series? Well, there isn't much.
And speaking of SBY/Star Blazers it is doing better than 999 is, 94 works. 57 without crossovers. (Yamato has a very small pool of writers actually writing for it in the tag though. They are very dedicated and I respect them.)
I'm excluding the reboots here. Since I view that as part of the Leijiverse since it is a SBY thing, but as it's own separate entity given Matsumoto had no involvement. (And I don't have the time, nor am as knowledgeable about SBY to go into the rights situation that went on between Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshinobu Nishizaki. There's fans who have been into SBY longer than I've been alive that can do a much better job.)
And then there's The Galaxy Railways, 30 works, 17 that aren't crossovers. Cosmo Warrior Zero? 67 works, 13 that aren't crossovers.
Then there is Queen Millennia, which is probably one of the most overlooked out of Matsumoto's bigger works. I don't even see many other Leijiverse fans talking about this one.
11 works. There is only 1 work that isn't a crossover. And that one singular work, that's something I posted. A piece of fanart I did.
people trying to insist a fandom is tiny when it /only/ has a few thousand works on ao3 meanwhile my current fandom is a sixteen book series and has several hundred fewer works than goncharov, a movie that, and i cannot stress this enough, doesn’t even exist
#I will always take a chance to talk about the Leijiverse#there are works out there but if youre into anything that isnt harlock you've got less to choose from to check out#which is kinda funny to me how that worked out since I see harlock as more the third child of Matsumoto (in terms of series)#he is no doubt a beloved character. he is probably The Character people know him for outside of maetel#but in terms of harlock having his own series? his own series focused on him weren't really as popular compared to 999 or SBY#but his series no doubt have dedicated followings. im speaking from what I've observed in japanese fandom though#and from conversations ive had with various fans throughout the years ive been into the leijiverse#now if we were going to get into Harlock in italy or especially france it would be another story#I cannot stress enough how big harlock is in france#linky posts
