 Étienne rolled over in bed and tried to find Edward, in order to curl up around him and take advantage of his body heat, but instead, the spot beside him was empty, if a little warm. He furrowed his face in Edward’s pillow and for a moment, it was sufficient, until even that wasn’t warm enough and he heard movement coming from somewhere else in the room. He knew it was late – or more, like early. He ignored it at first, his brain too sleep-lagged to properly care, or process things, but when he heard the noise again, he stirred, curiosity getting the best of him.

“Ed?” He asked, even if it sounded less like “Ed” and more like a mutated groan.

There was movement again in the room, until the bed dipped and Étienne recognised the familiar scent of Edward. He moved towards the warm body and reached for whatever part of his boyfriend he could find first, which ended up being an elbow.

“Early. Bed.” He said, making Edward chuckle.

“You go back to sleep, Teddy, I have to get ready.”

Étienne frowned, but then relaxed when he felt a gentle hand run through his hair. Still, Edward wasn’t slipping back under the blankets and that only put a slight damper on his current bliss. “Time?”

“Close to four thirty.”

Étienne frowned again, even if he was half-asleep. It’s what got him to sit up and give Edward a puzzled look, even if the look was more of a squint and his eyes were mostly still shut, “Remind me again, why?”

It was a tradition, Edward told him, when poor people lined the mall to get good deals on televisions and bread makers, because limited amount of stock and capitalism. Where every year, on Boxing Day, he and his mother went to the mall to get things they had been eyeing at bargain prices and where poor employees went in late Christmas Day to get ready. Edward had asked Étienne if he wanted to come along, but Étienne had told him, that even though he loved him dearly, and even though he got along well with Edward’s mother, there was absolutely no way in hell that he would go anywhere near a mall, on Boxing Day. Ever. Especially at this God forsaken time.

Edward had called him soft.

Étienne told him he needed at least some sleep.

Edward had told him it was his loss.

Étienne had told him to have fun and had even given him fifty dollars to “get something nice.”

Edward had thrown a pillow at him. (But he’d kept the money. A gift was a gift. And he could do a lot of damage with a fifty.)

“Because, it’s capitalism, baby,” He said with a laugh to his voice and Étienne groaned. “And, also, we really need a new toaster.” He paused as he put on a pair of pants, “Gotta have a hearty breakfast so we have energy for bargains! Also, by getting an early start we can be first in line – all part of the Strategy, Curly, you sure you don’t want in? We could use the extra set of hands.”

Étienne made a face at that – he wasn’t sure he would ever understand the logic behind such suffering, but if it made Edward happy, who was he to stop him? Hell, he didn’t even go Boxing Day shopping back home – and stores opened at 1pm back home! He had nearly fainted when Edward had told him stores here opened at normal times and people lined up even earlier. He had heard all about the Strategy so many times that he still wasn’t entirely sure how it worked out, but Edward and Mrs. Murphy swore by it and he wasn’t about to argue. He valued his spot in the good graces of Mrs. Murphy – he’d heard what happened to those who fell out of the good graces of Mrs. Murphy. (It wasn’t pretty.)

“God speed,” He chose to say instead and plopped back down in bed, pulling the covers over himself.

Edward chuckled softly and tucked him in, before placing a kiss to his forehead, “Be good – we should be back this evening, maybe earlier, depends. Anyways, Dad’s staying home, but he’ll be glued to the TV – World Juniors and Spengler start today. You’re more than welcome to watch with him – and don’t worry, I got you some real beer if you want – it’s in the back of the fridge.”

Étienne made a sound that could have been acknowledgement, but Edward didn’t stay to find out and instead headed out, while Étienne fell back asleep.

When Étienne deigned it was late enough to get up, he padded out of Edward’s old childhood bedroom and made his way to the main floor. He briefly remembered Edward telling him he was off to the mall, what felt like hours before, and true to his boyfriend’s word, he found Mr. Murphy sitting in the living room sofa, sporting his Team Canada sweater, with the TV on.

It was a good thing Étienne had already previously met Edward’s parents, for this would have been a much more daunting morning had he not. It wasn’t that Edward’s parents weren’t nice, but between the two of them, Mrs. Murphy was much easier to read than her husband. Mrs. Murphy was warm and welcoming. She was easy with words, a quick hug and she had a killer sense of humour. Her husband, on the other hand, was a man of few words.

Mr. Murphy was tall, built like a mountain, very strong and very intimidating looking. He had a full head of very dark hair, an intelligent look in his hazel eyes and sharp features. Étienne believed Edward would look like his father in thirty or so years, if he was half a foot taller and worked on the rigs for twenty odd years. Mr. Murphy was a family man who had done what he had needed to do to support a wife and two children. He had made sacrifices and had worked hard to make sure his family never needed for anything. He liked his sports channel, he liked his beer, and he fiercely loved his family.

From what Edward had told him, his father was proud of his province, loved where he was from, loved to take his truck out for a ride, and had strong conservative values. He and Edward had not always seen eye to eye and for a long time, Edward had been convinced his father would disown him the moment he found out he was gay, but as it turned out, Mr. Murphy equally loved his son fiercely. Over the years after Edward’s coming out, they had mended their broken bridges and had actually learnt to get to know one another. Now, at least, Edward knew that even if his father was more of the silent type and didn’t always express his feelings, and even if they didn’t always agree on politics, his father still wanted what was best for him and had his back. Therefore, it had been a relief when Mr. Murphy hadn’t told Étienne to leave and instead had invited him to sit at the table, when Edward had brought him over, a few summers ago. (And if anyone asked, Étienne had not been a nervous mess at the time. At all.)

It was why Étienne felt quite at ease (or, at ease) politely greeting Mr. Murphy, making himself something to eat, and then getting comfortable on the living room loveseat afterwards with his sketchbook and phone, while Mr. Murphy gave him a quiet play by play of what had happened up until now with the games.

Étienne ended up spending most of his morning and early afternoon watching hockey with Mr. Murphy. Even if Team Canada wasn’t playing, Mr. Murphy watched the other games to see what Team Canada could eventually face, if they got to play these teams, or when they would play them. The man certainly knew his hockey and was quite enthused about the sport, if Étienne was to judge by the comments he kept making. He even switched between the World Juniors tournament and the Spengler cup, but only during breaks and intermissions, since the Juniors’ had more at stake than the Spengler – or so Mr. Murphy said. Étienne didn’t mind and kept up with the games as he doodled away in his sketchbook.

“I remember back in 2015 when Connor McDavid came back. There was a lot of hype around that year’s Team Canada – a lot of talent as well. The great thing about this is you have all this up and coming talent, but you also get these surprises. You never know who’ll shine. Anything is possible.” He said and Étienne nodded, not quite sure what to add to that. “Hope Team Canada makes it far this year.” He added.

“I don’t see why they shouldn’t – they have a strong defence and that Dufour has a pretty solid forecheck. But they’re in a tight group and the other teams seem to have a lot of dept as well. Plus, Switzerland can be surprising and both Finland and Russia are juggernauts. They’ll have to be careful.”

Mr. Murphy sat up a little straighter and looked at Étienne, surprised, “Didn’t think you knew your hockey that well, son,” Étienne shrugged, even if his cheeks pinked a little.

“I follow the tournament – my sister volunteered the two years it was in Montreal. It’s an intensive game – more creative than regular hockey.”

Mr. Murphy nodded sagely, “Who would’ve thought the art kid knew so much about hockey?” He laughed and luckily, Étienne had had enough talks with Mr. Murphy (even if they were few) to know that he was only joking and that “art kid” was more of am endearment than an insult.

“I am absolutely full of surprises, Mr. Murphy,” Mr. Murphy laughed even louder and Étienne couldn’t help but grin.

“You know, I think your old man might actually like me,” He wrote to Edward, even if his boyfriend wouldn’t see his message until he got back home – or in his mother’s car.

It was indeed evening when Edward and his mother returned, loaded with bags and Étienne and Mr. Murphy helped them unload the car. (Étienne stayed inside but carried the bags from the door to the kitchen – it was cold outside and he didn’t have polar bear skin, unlike his boyfriend – or his boyfriend’s father, who was going from the car to the door in nothing but his slippers and what he had been wearing earlier.)

“I see this was a productive shopping trip,” Étienne said as a means of greeting once the last of the bags were in.

“It was, but I met my quota of people for the rest of the year. There were so many people, oh my God, but my mom and I still managed to get everything we wanted and then some,” He high-fived his mother as she walked by and Étienne shook his head, amused, “The Strategy, once more, proved to be flawless,” Étienne still wasn’t sure he understood the folly behind this madness, but he supposed there were many things that he did that Edward did not understand either.

“Good thing the year ends soon.” Étienne said, grinning as Edward made a face.

“Why am I not even surprised you said such a thing?”

“I am a gift, Murphy, you need to appreciate it.”

Edward stuck out his tongue, but Étienne only laughed as he helped Edward out of his jacket and hung it in the closet, “Jokes put aside, you look beat, d’you want me to run you a bath after you put everything away?”

“Yes, please, you’re the absolute best; so, how was your day? And what’s this with my father actually liking you?”

Étienne recapped his day as he helped Edward empty out the bags and told him about the games he had watched. He paused every now and again as Edward showed him his purchases of the day and once they were done, Étienne kept his promise and ran Edward a bath with extra bubble bath.

If Edward nearly fell asleep in the tub, Étienne blamed it on the “Strategy.”

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Summary: Expect the unexpected.

“This is all your fucking fault!” Mo shouted over his shoulder, throat aching parched from strain. It was the least of his worries though as survival had become a chess game, each move requiring careful calculation. A pity, as strategy was never his strong point. The words are torn from his lips, tousled and scattered among the flurries whipping him with a vengeance. He smiled imagining they at some point smacked into He Tian, point blank, punishment for their current predicament. Shivering he trudged along, legs weighty like logs as he waded through almost knee-deep snow. Thinking back, he should have said no when He Tian had proposed the offer to join him in the mountains for a weekend trip. Mo wasn’t the type that travelled, content with what his hometown had to offer, a homebody.

Snowboarding: that had been the selling point. Something he’d always wanted to try, had revealed once or twice in casual conversation but never seriously considered. He’d felt the earth turn on its axis, the stars aligning for him to make what was a wish, reality.

Reality was a cruel bitch, with no mercy. The pair had taken to the intermediate slopes the second day after no longer finding the beginner ones challenging. Mo was a natural the instructor had said, and He Tian had been experienced, of course.   Now he couldn’t even find the damn snowboard, he’d lost it in his panic when an unexpected storm had overtaken the pair. It had left them stranded and exposed with low visibility, no provisions. It was never meant to be a day trip. They’d managed to make it to the tree line and were now hiking in the direction of a cabin He Tian swore he’d seen on their way down. He glanced back again and could barely make out He Tian who lagged several meters behind him, moving at a slow but steady pace. It didn’t make sense to move at a creep when time was a constant buffer, set to force them into an undesirable timeline. He Tian had ignored his insistence that they move faster, told him to conserve his energy. Anger fueled by lack of understanding had given him the momentum to fling himself at the other, fists at the ready. Even in the moment, it astonished him how quick his temper could boil over. How far he could drift from reason in seconds. Fists had flown but with no real strength behind them, blows landing dully, arms easily caught up, crossed, body pinned to He Tian’s chest. “I need you to be rational,” He Tian had murmured in his ear, “you may not understand how serious this is but we don’t have time for games.” “You think I don’t know that,” Mo hissed, “It’s your fault we’re out here to begin with.” He’d scoffed, but Mo couldn’t mistake a twinge of hurt in his voice. He’d released him, let him stumble, trying to regain his balance. “You don’t think I have our best interests at hand? You think I want to die out here!?” “At the pace you’re moving? We might as well dig our graves.” “Look,” He Tian had spat, a hard edge to his voice “this is beyond you, this is beyond me. If you want to live, I advise you stay with me.” So, Mo had done the most logical thing in his headstrong capacity, go on ahead.   His name had been shouted, he could hear the anger in He Tian’s voice but the faster he moved, the fainter it became.

Endless evergreens dotted the left side of his view, to the right an infinite wasteland. Mo paused, hands on his knees to catch his breath, dizziness clung to him, but he only felt it when he stopped moving. He flexed his fingers, numb with cold, hard to bend. He straightened, feet moving forward on their own accord, the feeling in them lost some time ago. It went on like that for another hour. He was exhausted, swaying, their destination seemingly no closer than when they first began. Each breath became a gasp, pain wracking his chest as he fought to breathe. A look was cast over his shoulder but he was alone, nothing but the swirl of frost around him. Realization that he’d stopped shivering some time ago, resounded emptily. Not until he felt the cold press of snow against his cheek did he realize he’d fallen. He made an attempt to push up, limbs shaky, but there was nothing stable for him to gain purchase on. He slid deeper, snow up to his neck, and it was warm, he should rest for a bit…

He Tian passed him within minutes, heart thumping painfully in his chest when he sees the yellow parka barely surfaced in a sea of white. ‘I told you to pace yourself’ he wanted to scream though the words would fall on deaf ears. ‘You can’t go fast at this altitude.’ Deft hands unzipped the yellow fabric, pulled down the sweater at the neck. He placed an ear firmly against Mo’s chest, felt his own heart stir when a faint heartbeat whispered back to him, all the confirmation he needed.

“Thank God,” he breathed, replacing the material. He squatted, pulled, tipped Mo’s unconscious body onto his shoulder. There’d been worse circumstances, this one won’t conquer him. About a mile out a sturdy wood building hunkered down against the wind, the most entrancing sight He Tian’s seen this whole trip. Feet planted firmly, he bounced Mo to where he rested comfortably on his shoulder, dug his heels in and set out.

Mo gripped consciousness in stages. He recalled He Tian’s frantic face, inches away from his, but the words are garbled. He faded.

The next time he awakened, warmth was the first thing he sensed. Flashes of yellow and orange gleam and he saw a fireplace to his right radiating heat to warm his chilled skin. A thick but rough blanket encased him and a travel down his body revealed he was clad only in boxers. ‘What the fuck happened?’ He moved to sit up but a hand pressed to the middle of his chest pushing him back down. “You still need to rest and thaw out a bit, go back to sleep.” He could see He Tian eye him warily, a cigarette balanced in the press of his lips, body folded Indian style, naked from the waist up. It was humorous to Mo, given the circumstances. Was there a mini mart out here, how did he always have access to a cigarette, let alone a lighter? Obedient for once, more out of circumstance than habit, he laid back down, head pillowed on his arm watching the flames leap and dance. His eyes drifted closed just to sate their dryness, relief from the warm air of the fire but when they closed again he didn’t have the strength to open them.

The next time he came around he felt minutely better, more conscious of his current state. He flexed his limbs beneath the blanket, testing that they were all in working order. To his left he could see He Tian, eyes closed, chin resting in his hand, chest rising and falling evenly, but he knew better. “Can I get up now?” he croaked, voice rough with disuse.

He Tian cracked open a bloodshot eye, blinked, then looked lazily in Mo’s direction. Feigned nonchalance but failed in the rigidness of his body, the barest waver in his voice when he spoke. Mo would have missed it had he not known better.

“You can get up whenever you want, but it’s warmer under that blanket.” Mo considered, stayed put. “…Can you come here?” he asked, voice low. He Tian’s eyebrows rose at that. A beat passed, a breath released, his body creaked as he unfolded, clearly having held his ‘bedside’ position for hours. He moved forward in increments, clearly expecting the invitation to be recanted, a realization that made Mo’s heart ache.

When they were both beneath the blanket Mo shifted, turned on his side, facing the fireplace. He Tian curled easily around him like water, filling each and every crevice. “I’m sorry,” Mo whispered. Cleared his throat, tried again, “I’m sorry.” Don’t be,” He Tian said shuffling closer. “We’re fine.” “It’s… not fine,” Mo said, he could feel angry tears welling. “I should have listened to you, I almost got us killed.” “But you didn’t.” There was silence as Mo turned that over in his head. It was not reassuring, he knew he’d acted irrationally.

He Tian spoke. “Once the storm passes we’ll be able to make it back to the resort. I’m sure rescue teams will meet us mid-way if not sooner. They’re very efficien-”

“I told you this was your fault,” Mo cut in bitterly. “…as if you had any control over the weather. I almost died out there,” he said, voice cracking on the word “because I’m so damn stubborn.”

“I’d never leave you in harm’s way,” He Tian said “as long as I can do something about it. Have I not shown you that before?” “Why?” “Why what?” “Why do you look out for me? Why do you go the extra mile? Why did you save me?” Mo gasped desperately, trying to reign in his frustration.

Feeling movement behind him, Mo looked back as He Tian rose up on an elbow to peer down at him, face twisted with emotion so unlike his usually stoic nature.

The words are a wake up call.

“…because… I love you.”

"FLYING HIGH WITH SANTA THIS CHRISTMAS 2019."  a poem, a.k.a.: "Will We Have To Wait Until Christmas Morning Again?" 23 Dec 2019, Monday.

 IT'S A HEALTHY THING   to be "ready" in the morning for "action."

"Mrs. Claws"   is clawing herself,  and Santa feels the attraction,

"It's almost Christmas Eve for you, Big Red."     Mrs. Claus says this    from their bed,

As Santa   contemplates  this awfully frustrating scene,

HE KNOWS HOW HEALTHY IT IS TO  BE  HARD   &   CLEAN;

IT'S HEALTHY TO HAVE    SWEET   SALIVA.

"And, for, My Woman, you know I've a  / Hankering for spankering to make Her happy,

AND  SHE has REALLY got  "an itchy lappy,"      Needing   to    be     VERY FILLED,

Yet, Santa's "in training," although He's thrilled,  & is ready for some  sweet/Sweet Love,

But, like a boxer  to preserve his "glove,"  HE MUST ABSTAIN,  SO HE CAN SOAR:

For The Xmas Eve Flight, He MUST have more,  ENERGY   to see  Him  through That Night,     Of sleigh and gifts with reindeer flight.

[Since we know    all energy is s _ _ ual, we know that His "might,"

He MUST carefully preserve & conserve,     Yet, Mrs. Claus pleads: "WHO will serve,

MIL gave my infant a religious book for Xmas. Now there is a feud and I dont know what to do. via /r/atheism

TL;DR MIL gave my 8 month old a bible stories book for xmas knowing I am an atheist and knowing this would not be ok with me. SO is a closeted atheist because MIL comes from a bigoted fire and brimstone church. He supports this decision fully but wants as little drama as possible. I texted her a couple days later saying thank you but we are choosing to allow him to make up his own mind what he believes in and that I mean no disrespect because I know her faith is important to her. She deletes me off of Facebook and wont respond to me. Shows up at our house and sends a series of pleading, emotionally abusive texts saying she is disappointed in us. Now we don't know where we stand or where to go from here. Could I have handled it differently? How to we deal with this kind of behaviour going forward?

Me (30f) and my SO (33m) are not married but have been together for almost 13 years. His mother is a very conservative Christian woman who is very emotionally needy herself but can be very vindictive and cold to others. Her church is very homophobic, transphobic etc which is actually rare in my country where the churches are usually more accepting in this day and age. My family is very liberal and somewhat free spirited and atheist. I have some Christian family members in my immediate family but they dont wear it on their sleeve and do not try to push it on others or judge others for not following the rules of their faith.

This has never been the case with my MIL. She knows that I am not religious but is always making small comments about how I am living my life wrong etc. I just brushed it off because she is just one of those church ladies and i do not want to spend my emotional energy trying to dodge that. I just let it roll off of me.

Fast forward to now and we have a son who is under a year old and it is his first Christmas. I had mentioned I wanted to have a conversation with MIL about the religion thing in relation to our son but my SO is afraid after years of emotional blackmail about it. He is an atheist but doesnt feel he could ever tell her which is fair enough. But when it comes to our son we made a joint decision to not push any faith or non belief on him at all. We would simply let him decide for himself when he is older what he believes. We want to avoid exposing him to any religious stuff in general until he is old enough to think critically about it and can learn about different kinds of faith instead of just Christianity.

My MIL and I are facebook friends. I post and share atheist posts on facebook so she is well aware of what my beliefs are as well as my family's. Nothing I share is offensive or pointed at her, it is just a community I am involved in and have been for some time. She posts conservative posts about abortion is murder, etc. Whatever, we have a difference of opinion ideologically but so do a lot of me and my friends and it isnt a huge deal. She has shared these posts alongside mine for a few years now and it has never been an issue.

So Christmas morning she gives our son some lovely gift that were very appreciated and we sincerely thanked her. But saved for last is a bible stories book for babies that she opens with a pointed look and proceeds to open and flip through for my son, pointing out Jesus etc. I was seething. I didnt say anything because I honestly felt like crying or raging or both so I just sat there in silence. I felt disrespected and like she was going behind my back to try to push hef beliefs on my son.

We let Christmas pass and two days later I decide we have to say something. SO refuses to do it himself so I am forced to do it which I am not happy about.
