1:37AM : BAROLO ! - (nsfw)
summary. you had been avoiding your ceo as best as you could after the intimate drunk meeting you had shared, so what do you do now when you both are forced on a business trip?
notes. second chapter! hope y'all enjoy🍷✶𝄞
warnings/includes. (3.3k words / smut!) non idol! ceo! jungkook x f! employee! reader, smoking (reader's first time), masturbation heavely implied, fingering, giving m. head, pussy eating, drunk!!!, tad bit of angst at end
"we didn't sleep together, you fell asleep on my coach, i wasn't going to take advantage of you"
his words from a few days ago remain firmly in your head. you had done so good at avoiding him: taking the long way to not walk by his office, instantly running off to god knows where when you saw him - only for the very man you've been dodging so well, to ask you to go on a business trip to milan.
the flight was quiet.
the only thing that was hearable was the sound of a lighter getting light up every hour or so. he smoked.
it was his private jet after all, you didn't blame him. your mind trails off to your ex once more, you had thought you had managed to get rid of him in your mind completely, but he always managed to sneak back in.
he resented smoking, called smokers 'self-indulged assholes' if they did it in public. he was the kind of man who thought the world revolved around sheerly him, to think that another person would calmly invade said-world with a bit of smoke, was beyond unforgivable for him.
you glance towards jungkook, taking in the calm assurance in his eyes as he takes another slow puff. he seemingly notices your stare, his tone soothing, "do you want one?"
you physically feel your ex trying to pull the hand you're reaching out to take what jungkook offered, back. but he doesn't succeed, you win. you had never smoked before, you go based of what you've seen in pop culture. lightning, drag, wasn't it?
you can visably see jungkook fighting a smile while he reaches out for the cig, hanging it between his very own lips as he leans forward in his seat, one of his hands gently guiding your fingers so the cigarette was now in between your own plush lips
you slowly breathe, the smoke stinging your lungs and making you cough. he lets out a tsk, clicking his tongue disapprovingly as he looks at you from under his eyelashes, "inhale deeper," the voice not mad, more like gentle scolding.
the hotel room was mostly quiet, besides the soft hum of the AC and the faint noises of the dazzling city through the open window. you both had shared a few more words earlier, incrediably vague, until you parted ways to your respective rooms.
you couldn't quite fall asleep, you blamed it on loud milan when you in reality couldn't stop thinking about his fingers which had been on your lips, your fingers trace over them, imagining his tattoed ones doing just that. you had to ask him what the history behind those was, next time. next time?
your hands wander to your tits, where his eyes had lingered more then once if your memory didn't fail you. and you imagine his hand wrapping around yours, guiding you.
"i want you," the words you had whispered against his mouth replay in your head multiple times.
just as your fingers trailed further, there was an abrupt knock on the door. you glance at your phone: it's 1:37 a.m.
as you open the door you see a image of your boss, you haven't quite seen yet. jungkooks hair is visabily messed up, his shirt loose around the neckline. "couldn't sleep," he mumbles, his tone sounding almost like an confession, he shouldn't say, "do you want to take a walk with me?"
you give in, you don't want to give much thought into how weird it was for a boss to ask his employee out on a walk at almost 2am.
the uber drops you off at a 24hr shop which seemed out of part for the milan you've seen so far (through car windows)
"if you want a snack or a smoke or something," he looks at you, "and then we walk"
you don't know what prompts you to say, "wine" with so much confidence but you do regardless. please make me feel like that night, i want you the words linger in your head shortly, words you'd never say out loud.
if he's surprised he didn't show it, moreover he looked satisfied, pleased with your answer. and that's exactly what you liked about jungkook: he knew how to read the room. did he hear you touch yourself? maybe. did he mention it? no.
he leads you deeper into the store, towards the back where there were rows of alcoholic beverages, the lights dim. he moves to stand behind you, his chest almost touching your back, as he reaches to grab a bottle of barolo from a high shelf.
the music in the background is some indie tune, you had heard before, you nod your head along to the sound absentmindedly.
you can see him smile at the corner of your eye, not a smile that was mocking or finding something funny, more filled with general admiration.
"you like this song?" he asks, his voice quiet, nearly a whisper almost as if it was a secret while he placed the bottle down to the cashiers table, pulling out his card, black.
you nod with a genuine smile.
you end up settling down on a bench in a nearby park, opening the bottle. you sit crosslegged, looking over the park at night, genuinely intrested, "so what music do you like?"
"i like...indie stuff, mostly," jungkook responds, turning his head to look at you, the light night breeze running over his hair, "but i have a soft spot for a few italian punk rock songs from when i was younger."
"ever seen any of them live?" you ask, taking a sip from the bottle, "y'know you are in milan after all"
he can firmly smell your perfume. the same one that had stuck to his coach for days which made it simply unbearable to sit on it, without thinking about you.
jungkook laughs, the sound soft, almost as if it wasn't entirely voluntary. he runs a hand through his hair, the ends just falling back into his face. "no," he says, tilting his head back a little, "i haven't."
"maybe you should," you respond casually. you don't know why you were giving such tips to a business man with a multi-million empire to his knees. did he even have time to go to silly little concerts? what kind of life did he live?
he laughs again, you loved the sweet sound of it, "maybe i should," raising the bottle to drink once more, "would you go with me?"
you reach out to take another large sip, you need some more alcohol in your system to answer him, "maybe"
he watches you intently as you reach for the bottle again, his eyes flickering to your throat as you tilt your head back to drink.
"maybe," he says again, smiling to himself, "that's so vague of you, maybe."
handing the bottle back to you, repeating, "maybe," his voice teasing.
you repeat the same word once more as you both laugh. you can feel the alcohol begin to warm you from the inside, the feeling of slight dizziness setting in.
meanwhile he's looking at you, his eyes wandering over your face, resting on your mouth, the way your lips are tinted red from drinking the wine.
"why are you looking at me like that?" you mutter though your tone grazed on something reminding a joke. stupid fucking question.
jungkook's smile remains if not widening while he moves closer, "how am i looking at you?"
"like you want to fuck me," you mumble, chuckling at your words like it was a ridiciulous thought on it's own.
"does that bother you," he whispers, his voice low, his words just a little bit slurred from the alcohol, "knowing i want you like that."
you raise your eyebrows, taking another sip, "so you're admitting it?"
jungkook raises his eyebrows, copying your movement, a lazy, almost cocky smile on his face. he grabs the bottle from your hand, raising it to his lips, drinking a mouthful of wine, holding eye contact with you as he does. and you're convinced he wants to see you dead.
he hands the bottle back to you, his smile still present on is face, "yes," he says, his voice low, the sounds almost like a soft moan, "I'm admitting it."
"you're actually so sexy when you're like this," you respond, clearly just as intoxicated as he was. 'like this' when you are not scolding me for not bringing the right documents, is the part you leave out.
he laughs, louder if that wasn't the alcohol talking. "sexy when I'm drunk," he teases, his words slurred, "is that it?"
"maybe," you babble which just makes the both of you giggle again.
he takes the bottle out of your hand, setting it down on the ground, the empty glass making a small clinking sound as it hits the concrete.
"you're drunk," he says, his words still a little slurred, the sound teasing, "i think you need to shut up."
you grin at this man's sheer audacity, replying, "i think you need to learn how to take a compliment properly"
jungkook just moves closer, not responding for a few seconds until you were so close that your noses touched, "you like compliments?"
he practically makes you lie down on that damn uncomfortable bench, "you want me to tell you how sexy you are? cause i will"
"i won't fuck you on a bench, kook"
"i never get to be just kook," he mumbles, something reminding a pout on his face, an adorable sight. "i'm always boss, or sir."
you don't know how to respond, you want him to be kook to you but that is something that is practically out of your control. so you moan.
you can hear jungkook say something — something about the city, something aboout the driver's taste of music? the words slip through your head as soon as they are said and all you manage to do is laugh.
the car feels to fast, milan is way to blurry and for a second you seriously ask yourself if you had taken any drugs. jungkooks hand slides over your thigh as you tilt your head, letting out a breathy chuckle.
the chuckle turns into a suppressed moan as his fingers brush over your underwear. you can barerly think straight, dare tell him to stop though you wouldn't even want to, even if you could.
you nod or at least try to; you didn't know why in the first place, it’s hard to tell if your head is moving or if you’re just imagining it. your eyes are half-closed, barely able to focus on his face, but you can feel his fingers slipping under the edge of your panties, brushing against your slick, aching core. "you're so wet f' me"
you make a mental note to rate the uber driver five stars later, because of the sheer noises that man had to hear. you were incrediably grateful for the music covered it up at least a bit.
just as you were about to cum, the car came to a sharp stop. the poor driver's voice pulls you back to reality, announcing you've arrived to the hotel.
jungkook brings his juiced fingers to his lips, licking them with a small 'pop' noise. for a second you actually consider pushing him onto the dirty ground in front of the hotel and fucking him right then but you regain compusure through a groan.
you both stumble through the lobby if you saw it properly one of the large clocks showed it was 2:51am but there was a big chance that your eyes were fooling you.
he practically pushes you towards the elevator as the door closes, jungkook looks adorably confused at all the various floor buttons, his finger unsurerly moving from one to the other.
"don't think," you pull him closer by his shirt while jungkook's hands instantly craddle your face, no thoughts in his head. you press as many random buttons as you could while he presses his lips onto yours.
his hands get tangled in your hair, he pulls you even closer as if he wants to breathe your soul in, moaning into your mouth.
the elevator opens with a little 'ding' and you have to look around to see if it's the right floor, you had surprisingly gotten lucky. the hallway lights automatically turn on at your movement, they feel way to bright.
you both reach the door of his room as he fumbles with they keycard, trying to slide it into the lock, cursing under his breath whilst you laugh. the door refuses to open which just makes him release a giggle, cute very untypical, "how do these even work"
logicaly he should be a man who has opened multiple hotel doors like this before but it was most certaintly the alcohol in his system that made everything a bit to fuzzy to handle. jungkook finally manages to slide the card into the door, the light turning green with a small click.
he pulls you with him, tugging you towards the bed, his movements messy as he almost falls once on his way. flopping down onto the covers, pulling you on top so you're straddling him.
it's a pretty view, him under you. he really did look hypnotized in a way whilst you ran your fingers over his facial features, they are not as rough as you thought, on closer inspection.
"you got to many clothes on," you mumble, removing your own shirt and shorts in a clumsy haste.
"then take them off"
you grin, your fingers moving to his shirt to pull it over his head, the action surprisingly slow and tender though it was probably the wine making your mind all foggy.
jungkook looks up to you like you are the moon and the sun, his eyes droopy, his words a stark contrast to his loving gaze, "you're taking to long, c'me here"
"you are in no position to give me orders," you reply, working on his pants.
his head falls back against the sheets, the smile on his face evident, "i think i am, i'm the big, mean boss man"
big, mean boss man - that's how you need to save him in your contacts, you chuckle at the thought, pulling away his boxers. his cock springs free, already hard and throbbing with need.
"shut up or no head," you don't wait for his response, leaning forward to press a tentative kiss onto the tip before taking him into your mouth, savoring the taste and texture.
jungkooks hands tighten in your hair, guiding you with a mix of need and tenderness while he bucks his hips. you move your head up and down with precision, taking him deeper with each passing minute.
he curses, curses in a manner you've never seen a man like him do. and you feel a sense of pride in knowing that you have this man practically wrapped around your finger or better said — mouth.
his release is sweet, warm. you swallow each drop especially when he asks you to clean him up, you lick it all off. here and there you look up to him with your lashes and he moans each time.
you can firmly feel something shift in the air when you release him with that little 'pop' noise, reminding of how he left you without an orgasm in that damn uber. at least you had made him cum.
following, he gently pushes you onto the bed. you look over to your right, evidently amused noticing a closed wine bottle on his night desk. perhaps it automatically came with the hotel, it seemed expensive.
a hazy thought lingers in your mind, a blend of the lack of sleep and the alcohol still coursing through your veins. you reach out for the bottle, fingers grasping the cool, smooth glass.
with a tipsy giggle you uncork the wine, bringing it to your lips to get a quick taste before ultimately pouring about a good one third of it over your tits.
you can barerly make out jungkook's face, why did you mind seem so hazy? but you can hear his words, "you're a mess" his tone isn't insulting rather he says it like it was a just a mere fact.
but he calmly licks the liquid of you with the same ease as you had done with his cum.
“such a fucking mess,” he repeats, his words softer now, almost affectionate, as he sucks his way down the curve of your tit, "my mess"
his hands wrap around your thighs, putting them on his shoulders. he raises his eyebrows at your state, "all for me?" it sounded like a question though it was clear he didn't expect an answer — he certaintly didn't wait for one either.
the feeling of his hot, wet tongue against your core is a stark contrast to the coldness of the wine-soaked skin in combination with the ac, creating a delicious tension that had you whining for more.
jungkook’s hands grip your thighs firmly, holding you in place as he works his mouth over you, each flick of his tongue and suck of his lips calculated to drive you to the edge of sanity. he alternates between gentle, teasing licks and more aggressive, demanding sucks, making sure you’re fully engulfed in pleasure, one way or another.
jungkook eats you out like it's a part of his job, with much care and ease. an grunt or a groan vibrating against you more often then not.
his name slips over your tongue multiple times, and you would've been embarrassed for your porn-like moans if it wasn't for the release washing over you.
it falls over you in one motion and it would've felt like to much if it weren't for jungkook: jungkook, who's fingers wander over your thighs and tummy gently as if trying to bring you back on earth. jungkook, who gives you all the time in the world and whispers reassuring little sweet nothings against the sensitive skin.
when he sees you're somewhat ready to function again, his arms softly lie you onto him, one of his hands working through your hair attentively while his other reached out and lit up a cigarette.
the room has a special scent — wine, sex cigs.
jungkook takes slow, deliberate drags as you trace patterns over his chest, circles, hearts. his fingers absentmindely moving to lightly drum over your back while he takes another hit.
“want a puff?” he asks, a smirk playing on his lips, and without thinking, you nod, your brain swimming in a delightful stupor. he brings the cigarette to your lips, and you take a tentative drag, the smoke filling your lungs.
“breathe it in, babe” he murmurs, the nickname slipping from his lips like a forbidden secret. “like you did before.”
you do as he says, managing it properly this time as he gives you an approving hum instantly going in for a kiss.
you wake up with sunlight on your face, your first instinct is to smile, the curtains were open, did you forget to close them yesterday?
but as your senses sharpen, you realize something. something: or rather, someone is pressed against you. panic bubbles inside you as you register that jungkook lies beneath you, deep asleep, a peaceful smile grazing his face.
what had you done?
thankfully you remembered everything, though it was much more a curse then a blessing. you hadn’t wanted to cross this line.
there was no future here — he only desired you when you were both drunk.
and what was even worse was that you actually felt your heart clench when you looked at his clueless, oblivious face.
you wanted, no- you needed to disappear before the reality of this situation hits the both of you. it was a dick-move but that was what he had done that night, wasn't it?
but just as you begin to shift, a low, sleepy murmur escapes his lips, and he stirs beneath you. his eyes flutter open, a lazy smile making it's way onto his lips as he registers you on top of him, blissfully unaware of your inner conflict.
"good morning, babe," he reaches forward to brush one strand of yours behind your ear, you were convinced there was nothing currently working behind those eyes, "did you sleep well?"

Tale of the tape: Who will win Euro 2020?
10:21 AM ETThe Euro 2020 final is here at last, albeit a year later than scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and London will stage a heavyweight clash between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.Roberto Mancini's Italy are seeking the Azzurri's first European title since 1968, while England are attempting to win a major tournament for only the second time, having last tasted success at the 1966 World Cup.Both Italy coach Mancini and England manager Gareth Southgate have revived the fortunes of their respective national teams since taking charge in 2018 and 2016 respectively, but Sunday will be decided by the players on the pitch.- Euro 2020 on ESPN: Stream LIVE games and replays (U.S. only) - Euro 2020: Live on ESPN | VAR watch | Pick 'em - Don't have ESPN? Get instant accessWill Raheem Sterling or Harry Kane inspire England to glory? Or will the defensive organisation of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci pave the way for someone like Federico Chiesa to score another crucial goal for the Italians? Both teams are unbeaten at Euro 2020 and the game appears too close to call. Here's how Italy and England stack up ahead of Sunday's clash.2 RelatedGoalkeeper:So far at Euro 2020, the goalkeeping department has been a position of strength for both Italy and England.Gianluigi Donnarumma, expected to sign for Paris Saint-Germain this month following the expiration of his AC Milan contract, has justified his billing as Gianluigi Buffon's natural successor by providing presence, reliability and stature in goal for Italy. The 22-year-old, at 6-foot-5 inches tall, cuts a commanding figure and he has been beaten just twice in six games. His save of Alvaro Morata's during the penalty shootout win against Spain in the semifinal gave Jorginho the chance to win it.One of Italy's key strengths at the Euros has been the defensive axis forged between Donnarumma and veteran centre-halves Chiellini and Bonucci. Together, they pose a formidable unit. For England, Jordan Pickford went into Euro 2020 with question marks over his reliability. Despite being a consistent performer for England, his club form for Everton last season was mixed, with the 27-year-old making a number of costly, high-profile mistakes. That said, he has once again saved his best performances for the national team and, aside from some wayward passes during the semifinal win against Denmark, Pickford has been outstanding this summer. His reflex saves and ability to quickly get down low to save have led to him conceding just one goal so far, and his kicking has often sparked breakaway attacks. And although he can take risks, he has cut out many of the mistakes that have plagued him at club level. Defence:Both teams have largely operated with a back four, although England played with a back three during the round-of-16 victory against Germany, with Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker moving inside to partner John Stones and Harry Maguire.Italy coach Mancini is unlikely to divert from a back four that has served him well throughout the tournament, although the Achilles injury sustained by Leonardo Spinazzola during the quarterfinal win against Belgium saw Chelsea left-back Emerson promoted to the starting lineup in the semifinal against Spain.Emerson is likely to keep his place alongside Bonucci and Chiellini, with Giovanni Di Lorenzo occupying the right-back slot. Everything is held together and controlled by Bonucci and Chiellini in a defence that went 11 games without conceding a goal until the round-of-16 win over Austria, which Italy won 2-1.England coach Southgate has a variety of options, having rotated over the course of their six games. Walker and Kieran Trippier have both played at right-back, while Trippier started the opening game against Croatia at left-back.Luke Shaw has since occupied that role and has enjoyed an impressive tournament, linking well with Raheem Sterling down the left, and the Manchester United defender is almost certain to start on Sunday. Stones and Maguire will continue at centre-half, but don't be surprised if Southgate mixes up the formation.Midfield:Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice have been England's defensive midfield pair throughout the tournament and Southgate has so far resisted the temptation to restore the fit-again Jordan Henderson. With the Leeds and West Ham duo performing the double pivot role, Southgate has selected attacking midfielders ahead of them, operating behind centre-forward Harry Kane. Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Mason Mount and Jack Grealish have all been handed starts by Southgate, with the coach tailoring his selection to the opposition. Mount is likely to start against Italy, but Southgate could go with any of the other three, or even bolster the area with Henderson, in his starting team for the final.Italy's selection in midfield been more predictable and consistent, with Mancini operating with a three-man midfield throughout the tournament. Jorginho, Marco Verratti and Nicolo Barella have started each of the three games in the knockout stages and are likely to form the same midfield for the final. Jorginho's control of the ball, Verratti's passing range and Barella's threat in attacking positions make Italy the biggest challenge that England have faced in the centre of the pitch.Could an in-form Harry Kane be the difference-maker for England on Sunday against Italy? Photo by Carl Recine - Pool/Getty ImagesAttack:England's main threat has come from Kane and Sterling, with the two forwards scoring seven of England's 10 goals.Tottenham forward Kane failed to score in the group stage, but he has come to life in the knockout rounds by hitting the back of the net against Germany, Ukraine (twice) and Denmark.Kane and Sterling will start on Sunday, but England have other forwards capable of making an impact. Marcus Rashford has been given just 83 minutes' playing time, while Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also been relatively under-used.Italy have outscored England with 12 goals in six games, but they have spread them around the team and have five players -- Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile, Chiesa, Manuel Locatelli and Matteo Pessina -- on two goals.Immobile is likely to start with Andrea Belotti once again in reserve. With Chiesa having scored twice in two games at Wembley, Mancini may start with the Juventus forward with Insigne or Domenico Berardi as the third forward.Star players:Sterling has been England's most consistent and greatest impact player of the tournament. He has scored goals, created them, won penalties and generally provided a crucial attacking outlet for Southgate's team. His partnership with Shaw has been a big factor and an area that the Italians will undoubtedly look to control.Kane is clearly a match winner, and needs one goal to draw level with Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrik Schick on five goals for the tournament -- though Ronaldo is primed to win the Golden Boot as he is the only one of the trio with an assist to his name. To win the Golden Boot, Kane needs to score at least two goals, or get a goal and at least two assists. Then there is Rashford, Foden, Sancho and Grealish, all of whom could quite easily claim the headlines with a match-winning display. For Italy, the team has been the star, with each area of Mancini's side delivering when it matters. Chiellini has offered a reminder of the beauty of world-class defending, while Jorginho and Verratti have enjoyed great tournaments in midfield.Further forward, Chiesa has delivered big goals at crucial moments, but the strength of Italy comes from the collective unity of the team rather than one or two outstanding individuals.Roberto Mancini's Italy will be looking to win the country's second European Championship, and first since 1968. GettyIntangibles (coaching, momentum etc.):England have never beaten Italy at a major tournament, losing against the Azzurri at the 2014 World Cup, Euro 2012 and Euro 1980, and their last competitive win came in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley in November 1977.But Euro 2020 has been a tournament in which England have ended a number of negative sequences -- they won their opening game for the first time at a Euros, beat Germany in the round of 16 to win a knock-out Euros tie without a penalty shootout for the first time and, by winning the semifinal against Denmark, reached the final for a first time. No team has won the Euros on home soil since France in 1984, so England are also aiming to end that 37-year wait.
The beautiful game lives here. Unlock world-class coverage of top leagues, tournaments and teams. Sign up now to stream soccer on ESPN+FRIDAY, JULY 9 • Cincinnati vs. Columbus (7:30 p.m. ET)SUNDAY, JULY 11 • Italy vs. England (3 p.m. ET) Italy have lost just once in six games against England at Wembley, so the superstitious Mancini will believe that the omens are on his team's side. Italy also won knockout ties against Austria and Spain at Wembley en route to the final.Sunday will be England's 16th major tournament game at Wembley, having won 11 and drawn four of the previous 15. The Euro 96 penalty shootout defeat against Germany in the semifinals is classed as a draw, having been level at the end of play.So going into the game, both teams will believe that Wembley is their lucky ground -- but only one of them will be right.Prediction: Italy 2-1 EnglandIt's a tough one to call, with neither team an overwhelming favourite to win. They are two evenly matched sides, both of whom are carrying their own sense of destiny, with big-game players on each team.England will play to win, while Italy's defensive and tactical discipline means that they can, and will, play to not lose. England simply need to be able to break Italy down without leaving gaps at the back for Mancini's players to exploit.Italy have the experience and game management skills to be able to defuse the home atmosphere and make it a battle of attrition for England, but they also possess the attacking qualities to hurt Southgate's team.If Italy are able to fulfill their game plan, they will win. But it will be close. Read the full article

Milan-Sanremo Preview
The same race but with a new route, this year’s Milan-Sanremo is hotter, hillier and longer than usual but remains as accessible as ever to a wide cast of contenders and just as elusive too.
The Route: we have one, which is good news. It’s now at least 305km. After several mayors along the Ligurian coast said no to the race for fear of road closures during the peak tourist season, 80% of the route changes and the race rides longer inland. Gone is the Passo Turchino and the long parade along the Via Aurelia, instead it’s out to Alessandria and into the Monferrato Hills and then the Langhe, land of wine, olive oil… and Nutella before dropping down to the coast in Imperia where the race picks up the traditional route.
After 120km the climbing begins. The habitual route of the Passo Turchino was a long and steady climb – a railway runs alongside it – but this time the climbing is more jagged and irregular. The road rises to Cravanzana with some 7-8% ramps, nothing to asphyxiate the sprinters but in a race where every pedal stroke counts it’ll sap them. Otherwise the climb to Niella Belbo feels interminable, a long drag and the descent is punctuated by a climb.
From the second feed zone the race starts the long climb up the Tanaro valley to the Colle di Nava, it’s all on the SS28, a big wide road that’s engineered with tunnels and viaducts to make it easy for trucks to use. So it won’t suit the climbers and punchy riders and because it’s so wide there’s less risk of being caught out of position. The descent is much steeper at first but all on the same big road, it’ll be enjoyed by the good descents but there’s time to regroup. Later on there’s a procession of tunnels (to block the TV images). Closer to the coast the road gets narrower and this is where teams will be riding like express trains to place their riders. They reach the coast at Imperia and pick up the old route.
They hit the Cipressa (more detail). This starts with sharp right hander and quickly climbs through olive groves above the coastal town of San Lorenzo, the 9% gradient bites hard after 275km. This is a proper moment of climbing that ejects sprinters, the average of 4% is a blend of a steep start and a flat portion over the top where dropped riders flounder. There’s a toboggan descent, the most technical part of the entire course. The race continues along the coastal road, the Via Aurelia where riders jostle for position for 9km before the final climb.
The Poggio (more here) starts with 9.2km to go and marks the final phase of the race. A furious pace is inevitable. A right flick off the main coastal road is followed by series of wide bends that are so fast some riders have to brake before entry despite going uphill. Positioning is everything as the road winds up, every metre matters. Unlike the Cipressa this isn’t steep, there’s one step at 8% and this is often exploited as the place to attack. After 290km the peloton’s elastic is like a old rubber band and the Poggio is just enough snap things.
The descent is fast and marked by a series of curves and five hairpins. The race has been won on the descent before and it has its technical moments, for example knowing which bend has the sunken inspection cover on the exit line helps, but this is not for virtuoso descenders, instead it suits those with power, a series of sprints out of every corner. Carrying speed into the bends matters but what matters more is being able to pump out big watts on every exit. The ramp ends with fast junction onto the main road.
The Finish: under the 1km banner and it’s left at the fountain, then right on the big wide Via Roma, the scene of wins by Merckx, Coppi, De Vlaeminck et al, it has the slightest of slopes up to the finish line.
The Scenario: is the new course harder? Yes and no. It’s longer at 305km officially and probably more, and this includes an extended neutral roll out. Distance matters, it’s the longest race of the year and compounded by the heat of dog day of August: the arid Alpine Alte Langhe instead of a sea breeze. There’s an extra 500m of vertical gain but later it’s on wider roads, anyone attacking will find it hard to outride the peloton. The Cipressa’s the hardest climb but it’s been a quarter of a century since a winning move was launched there, ever since the winner’s jumped on the Poggio, gone on the descent, attacked into Sanremo or won the bunch sprint, it’s always that late.
One other change for 2020 is there are teams of six which reduces the organisational capacity of teams to control events, teams rarely reach Sanremo with two riders, it’s usually down to the leaders. What might matter most is that it’s simply different. There’s no playbook, no precedent so when 27 team managers give their briefing on Saturday morning they’ll talk in the conditional, “it should be a sprint” but they don’t know for sure. For a case study see the 2013 Liège-Bastogne-Liège when roadworks meant the habitual Roche aux Faucons climb was replaced by the Colonster climb and the pattern and rhythm of the finale felt different.
The Contenders There’s not much to go on as riders have only resumed racing and now face 300km in broiling heat. Part of the charm of this race is that so many riders on the startline can hope to win, it’s a classic that’s accessible to sprinters and grand tour winners alike with plenty in between.
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) is the lead pick. He went solo on last weekend’s Strade Bianche and mid-week finished second in Milano-Torino and its his form and versatility that makes him a prime contender, he can go on the Poggio, he’s ideal for the descent and he’s won bunch sprints before and heat doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Greg Van Avermaet (CCC) has been looking strong, but as ever how to convert this to a win? Ideally to follow a move over the Poggio and win in the sprint, feasible but far from certain. Team mate Matteo Trentin is suited to this race too.
Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quickstep) had six punctures and several bike changes on the Strade Bianche but the main thing is his form, he says he’s improving but not yet 100% so he’s not the prospect he was last year when he was winning stages in Tirreno-Adriatico. Bob Jungels and Zdeněk Štybar bring more options with the latter probably the best in form.
Oliver Naesen‘s yet to win that big race and he knows it, he’s been close so often and has been working on his sprint of late. He climbs surprisingly well so the finish suits. Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos) won here before and his form seems good but is he as explosive and sharp as before? Team mates Gianni Moscon, Filippo Ganna and Dylan van Baarle can all feature too. Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) leads a team without a sprinter and so has an interest in a lively race, even if Alex Aranburu is fast but the problem is there are faster. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) can do everything but he hasn’t had a top-10 on the road this year which is unusual so he’s not the red hot pick he could have been. Michael Matthews (Sunweb) is an archetypal rider for this kind of race as he can climb and sprint and it’s a regular target but there are punchier riders and faster sprinters.
Philippe Gilbert (Lotto-Soudal) dreams of triumph here and he’d be a popular winner as he’d complete the grandslam of all five monuments. But he’s older now and less explosive, it’s hard to see him getting the jump on his rivals. Still the new course might open up things for him.
Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) won Milano-Torino and is in top shape. But like all the sprinters if you could replay the finish again and again the result might vary and Démare’s win rate is not as efficient as the others and he’s got a tendency to jump early which is ideal for those battling for his wheel. Fernando Gaviria (UAE Emirates) won a stage in Burgos and with some margin on the rest and has Alexander Kristoff for company but will it be too hot for the Norwegian hulk? Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) can win big, has been targettng this race for years now and has an excellent win rate. Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) is 30 now and has yet to win in Sanremo. The race seems made for him, he can pounce on the Poggio, ace the descent or just win in the sprint yet the win here’s proved elusive. Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quickstep) is versatile, the hilly finale suits him but in a straight sprint he’s less of certainty and has team mates who will want to avoid a sprint, which means Bennett can sit tight but also that he can see his colleagues go up the road with others rather than have them to chase down moves. Elia Viviani is fast had has a Cofidis team around him. Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT) places more often than he wins but can pop up for a podium, the same with Ben Swift (Ineos). Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa-Samsic) could have been on the podium here before, on his best days he can float over climbs that sink other sprinters but Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) took a hard stage of the Route d’Occitanie. Finally among the sprinters there’s Niccolò Bonifazio (Total Direct Energie), the local and he won a stage of Paris-Nice this year with an explosive jump that saw him just ride away from his rivals. There are even more sprinters but this is a long enough preview already and remember the Sanremo finish isn’t your usual bunch sprint, it’s as much a test of stamina as speed with typically 20-30 riders in contention.
Finally there’s Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo), capable of anything on a good day and he’s in good form but the Giro is his big goal and that’s months away.
– Wout van Aert, Fernando Gaviria, GVA Caleb Ewan, Arnaud Démare Sam Bennett, Elia Viviani, Peter Sagan, van der Poel, Michał Kwiatkowski Štybar, Matthews, Colbrelli, van der Poel, Mohoric, Trentin
Weather: hot and sunny. Temperatures will reach 35°C inland and it’ll be a cooler 30°C on the coast for the finish. There’ll be a slight tailwind for the hilly section inland, not enough to speed the race on but it could help cook a few riders.
TV: who knows who will win, the pleasure is seeing how it all happens. The race starts at 10.50am CEST, TV coverage begins at 3.30pm and the finish is forecast for 6.30pm.

All quiet at Everton as the clock ticks down to the close of the transfer window. It looks increasingly like new manager Carlo Ancelotti will keep his powder dry until the summer unless a very late deal emerges.
Director Of Football Marcel Brands stated that Everton hoped to move on defender Cuco Martina and striker Oumar Niasse during this window but it looks an increasingly forlorn hope unless a club decides to act in desperation.
Martina is totally out of the picture while Niasse, signed by Roberto Martinez in 2016, has made a couple of brief and unimpressive appearances as a substitute recently.
Everton would love to get them off the wage bill but this looks unlikely.

lost 6-1 at home to City less than three weeks ago, Smith could be forgiven for avoiding looking at Pep Guardiola’s side too closely, so his answer took me aback.

Liverpool look to go 19 clear
West Ham v Liverpool (19:45 GMT)
Liverpool can go NINETEEN points clear at the top of the Premier League tonight when they take on West Ham in their rearranged fixture.
Jurgen Klopp will recall the bulk of his senior squad after making 11 changes for the draw with Shrewsbury in the FA Cup, though forward Sadio Mane is sidelined with a small muscle tear.
West Ham meanwhile are only outside the relegation zone on goal difference and were beaten at home by Championship West Brom in the FA Cup at the weekend.
The Hammers will monitor goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who is nearing a return from a thigh problem. Midfielder Robert Snodgrass will also be assessed as he battles to overcome a knee injury.
Ryan Fredericks, Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Arthur Masuaku and Jack Wilshere are still sidelined

Arsenal close in on Mari
Arsenal are on the verge of agreeing a six-month loan deal for Flamengo defender Pablo Mari.
It is understood the Gunners have agreed a loan fee for the player, with the deal due to become permanent in the summer.
Flamengo had targeted Leo Pereira as Mari’s replacement and confirmed the Athletico Paranaense defender’s arrival last night.
Mari has already flown to England once, believing a deal was close, only for Flamengo to pull the plug on the transfer.
However, it is not thought it will be stopped again, with the deal due to be completed before Friday’s deadline.
is wary of the threat posed by the Red Devils.
“It’s Manchester United. They can do it, they have done it,” said Guardiola.
“In these kind of games against incredible teams with incredible history, they have pride and I know how difficult it will be to reach the final.”
Evening Standard
Arsenal are now clear to sign Pablo Mari after Flamengo signed a replacement for the defender, reports the Evening Standard.
Mari flew to London earlier this week to discuss a move to Emirates Stadium but returned home without completing the deal.
However, Flamengo’s signing of Leo Pereira from Athletico Paranaense clears the way for Mari to move to the Premier League, with the 26-year-old now expected to return to the UK to finalise the transfer before Friday’s deadline.
according to Spanish outlet Marca.
The Catalan club are on the hunt for a new forward after Luis Suarez was ruled out for three months following knee surgery.
Moreno was a prime target but Valencia refused to lower their asking price for the 28-year-old, prompting the club to make a move for former Southampton forward Tadic instead.
Spanish outlet AS.
The Uruguayan striker is reportedly close to a switch to La Liga, but Beckham’s close relationship with PSG and the club’s president Nasser Al Khelaifi may be key to hijacking the deal.

European round-up: Mario Balotelli scores first Brescia goal in defeat at Napoli, Sevilla edge five-goal thriller | Football News
Franck Ribery is on target for Fiorentina as AC Milan are beaten 3-1 at the San Siro
Last Updated: 29/09/19 10:17pm
Mario Balotelli scored his first goal for Brescia in a defeat at Napoli
Mario Balotelli scored his first goal for Brescia, but it was not enough to prevent his new side from going down to a 2-1 defeat at Napoli in Serie A on Sunday.
Three years on from his last goal in the Italian top flight, Balotelli carried Pia, his six-year-old daughter, onto the field with him.
The hosts took a 2-0 lead through Dries Mertens and Kostas Manolas before the break but Balotelli took advantage of his imposing physique to head in from a corner midway through the second half to make it interesting, but Brescia were unable to complete the comeback.
Balotelli lets fly from a free kick during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Napoli
“Mario is a player that you all know,” the club’s head coach Eugenio Corini said. “He arrived with a lot of motivation and he really seems to be bonding with the squad. He’s a great player and I’ll always expect something extra from him.”
Bouncing back from a highly disappointing midweek loss to Cagliari, fourth-placed Napoli moved within one point of third-placed Atalanta.
AC Milan coach Marco Giampaolo is at risk of losing his job after the Rossoneri lost 3-1 at home to Fiorentina for their third straight league defeat.
It’s the first time since the 1938/39 season that Milan have lost four of their opening six matches, and they now sit 16th in the table – a point above the relegation zone.
Franck Ribery (centre) celebrates his goal to put Fiorentina 3-0 up at AC Milan
Erick Pulgar put Fiorentina ahead early on with a penalty and Milan were reduced to 10 men after the break when VAR determined that a studs-up tackle by Mateo Musacchio into Franck Ribery’s ankle deserved a red card.
Gaetano Castrovilli doubled Fiorentina’s advantage by getting to a rebound, and Ribery fooled a pair of defenders to make it 3-0 after a poor penalty attempt from Federico Chiesa was saved by Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Rafael Leo slalomed past several defenders to pull one back in style for Milan’s only real highlight.
Elsewhere, Roma are fifth, one point behind Napoli, after Edin Dzeko’s header earned them a 1-0 victory at Lecce.
Lazio are one point further back in sixth after thrashing Genoa 4-0 with goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Stefan Radu, Felipe Caicedo and Ciro Immobile, while Udinese beat Bologna with a first-half strike from Stefano Okaka.

La Liga: Pressure mounts on Espanyol’s Gallego
Espanyol coach David Gallego is under immense pressure after his side lost for the fourth time in as many home games this season.
They fell to a 2-0 defeat to Valladolid at RCDE Stadium on Sunday, finishing the match with 10 men and with their disgruntled fans calling for Gallego to be dismissed.
Valladolid’s Michel Herrero converted a first-half penalty and Oscar Plano added another goal in stoppage time. Espanyol defender Fernando Calero was given a straight red card for a professional foul.
Valladolid heaped the pressure on Espanyol boss David Gallego with a 2-0 win
Also on Sunday, Eibar earned a second consecutive win by beating Celta Vigo 2-0 thanks to goals from Edu Expsito and Fabian Orellana.
Sevilla are up to sixth in the table after beating Real Sociedad 3-2 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
Mikel Oyarzabal’s opener was cancelled out by Nolito before further strikes from Lucas Ocampos and Franco Vazquez put the hosts in control. Portu set up a nervy finale but Sevilla held on.
Bundesliga: Ibisevic inspires Hertha
Substitute Vedad Ibisevic scored two goals with his first two touches of the ball in Hertha Berlin‘s 4-0 rout of 10-man Cologne in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Vedad Ibisevic scored twice as Hertha Berlin beat 10-man Cologne
Hertha were given a helping hand by VAR when Cologne defender Jorge Mer was sent off moments before the break. Referee Sren Storks had shown Mer a yellow card for a late challenge on Vladimir Darida, but changed it to red after consulting video replays.
Cologne had made a good start but Javairo Dilrosun scored against the run of play in the 23rd minute.
Ibisevic made an instant impact after coming on, scoring twice either side of the hour-mark. Belgian defender Dedryck Boyata completed the rout with his first Bundesliga goal in the 83rd minute as Hertha climbed to 10th and left Cologne in 17th place after six rounds.
Both teams posed together for a photo before the game to mark “Diversity Day,” while Cologne players also wore jerseys that had the sponsor’s name in rainbow colors.
Earlier on Sunday, Luca Waldschmidt scored a late goal for Freiburg to win 2-1 at Fortuna Dsseldorf and move third on goal difference, a point off leaders Bayern Munich.

WTF FRIDAY! NO LONGER A MISSFIELD EDITION!
Yeah...those are tears of joy folks. Grown men do cry sir!
We finally have a MIDfield.
- Is it possible that we actually have a better MIDFIELD than Juve does?
Right now we have Bakayoko, Biglia, Kessie, Hakan and Jack (injured)
Juve has Pjanic, Can, Betancur, Khedira and Matuidi with Ramsey coming in.
Other than maybe Pjanic’s free kick skills, which of course have disappeared thanks to Ronaldo, is there much separating us from them? We are definitely younger and I would argue stronger and faster. Sure they might have some age and experience on their side, but that only means they are in need a major overhaul. Honestly they’ve never been the same since Pogba left. They may still have a slight edge on us, but I think it’s closer than most realize.
- Daniele Orsato is the worst kind of ref
Shortly after I started refereeing a veteran ref gave me some excellent advice. When it comes to giving out yellow cards, you need to get something in return. What does that mean exactly? In short it means that if I give a player a yellow, I need that player to slow down and respect the fact that if they continue, I will give them a red. Orsato does not do this. He hands out a ton of yellows, often times early in games, but doesn’t demand anything in return.
Case in point? He has handed out 75 yellows in the league this year, 20 more than anyone else, and zero red cards.
How is it possible that he has seen 75 yellow card offenses yet not a single straight red? Not a single second yellow? That seems impossible.
What ends up happening is that guys get a yellow, get called for another foul or two, realize Orsato won’t give them a second yellow, and just kick the crap out of everyone. Just look at the 2 games he has had Milan this year, against Torino and Lazio. In both games the temperature of the match got way too high and things got out of control. He easily could have handed out second yellows and even straight reds in each game. Yet he did nothing. It blows me away that he gets CL games.
- There’s just too much VAR right now
Frank Crivello had a good point on the Serie A Sitdown Podcast the other day:
Is it possible VAR is getting used too much and also is it being used simply because it’s there and not necessarily when needed?
I hadn’t thought about it before, but it’s an excellent observation.
Before VAR came on the scene I was a huge critic of it. I hate it’s use in the NFL. I used to love the NFL but now find it nearly unwatchable. VAR, we call it instant replay here, is a big reason why. It has intruded on every part of the game. Almost everything is reviewable. It’s so bad that after any great play, the first thing an announcer will do is question whether it will be reviewed or not.
It’s kind of a buzzkill.
As far as I’m concerned VAR should only be used for offsides and calls along the goal line, i.e. whether the ball crossed the line or not. Call it the Muntari line if you will. That’s it. Instead we are seeing it used for all sorts of things, the sort of things that are judgement calls in the refs mind (cards, fouls, intent, handling) that when reviewed and watched in slow motion lose all context of the game itself. The game isn’t played in slow motion, so why referee it that way?
Also if you’re super paranoid, it just gives Juve more avenues to bend things in their favor.
- Updated PLUS/MINUS for the year so far:
KEEPER: Donnarumma +16
DEFENDERS: Musacchio +16, RR +12, Calabria +11, Romagnoli +11, Abate 6, Conti 5, Zapata 2, Laxalt E
MIDS: Kessie 16, Paqueta 10, Bakayoko 8, Biglia, 7, Mauri E
ATTACKERS: Calhanoglu 14, Suso 13, Piatek 8, Cutrone 6, Castillejo 6, Borini 4, Higuain 1
We are basically +10 as a team since Paqueta showed up. Of all the numbers, that one stands out the most right now.
What a difference a MIDFIELD makes!
- I shared this the other day but it’s worth repeating:
AC MILAN FACT OF THE DAY: Over 2 seasons, Gattuso's record over 2 January’s and February’s now stands at 14 wins, 1 loss and 6 draws. In those 21 games Milan have outscored their opponents 33-6 and have 15 clean sheets.
The ability of this team, no matter the ownership, manager or players, to play well in the early spring is amazing. We also did it under Montella and Mihajlovic. Seedorf too. There just must be something in the water over there at Milanello.
See you all tomorrow!

In this day and age of football being a global game, a crowd watching at any stadium is almost always quite a small fraction of the total number of spectators.
The Wanda Metropolitano may hold less than 70,000 seats, but over 11 million people tuned in to watch last season’s Champions League final. It’s estimated that over 3 billion people watched the 2018 World Cup final. Twitter is never busier than when big sporting events are on, with the social media site well known to have become the ‘second screen’ for fans, providing them with a real-time update of stats, fan-recorded replays of skills, and of course, an endless stream of opinions on the game.
MORE: CaughtOffside writers pick the best forward of the decade other than Messi & Ronaldo, featuring Man City & AC Milan superstars
Clearly, it’s no longer just about the few thousand who show up at the ground and sing for 90 minutes, but it may play a more important role for those watching at home than we’ve realised yet.
Liverpool‘s 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid was by no means a classic performance; Jurgen Klopp’s side put in a solid but unspectacular display against a Spurs side who didn’t do much either. In the end, a Mohamed Salah penalty and a late strike from Divock Origi did the job, but the match was short of memorable moments for any neutrals watching. There were no great golazos, moments of skill or even particularly pretty passages of play.
One moment that went viral after the game, however, was the reaction of Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho, who were pundits in the beIN Sports studio that night.
While attempting to do some analysis after the game, the pair were clearly distracted by the sheer noise of the travelling Liverpool fans. The iconic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ chant rung out across the ground, and clearly moved the two managers. Mourinho described it as “beautiful”; Wenger added that it is “unique”. As much as the game has evolved, and our ability to enjoy and understand it enhanced hugely by technology, it is still the simplest things that really capture our imaginations.

For Liverpool in particular, a city with a strong community spirit, winning their first title in 30 years this season would have been “a tremendous party”, according to Empire of the Kop editor Jordan Chamberlain. “It’s pretty heartbreaking,” he says. “But right now – given everything that’s happened – I just want to see the Reds officially win it on a football field and not find out about it via a press-release.
“It would have been a tremendous party in the city, even bigger than after the Champions League last year – but hopefully Jurgen Klopp can build a dynasty and there’ll be plenty more opportunities in the future.”
If the Premier League returns this summer, people will tune in, there can be no doubt about that, but it may be some time before we get roaring crowds back in football grounds, and the longer that goes on, the more you have to wonder if people will continue to follow the sport as passionately as before. It will, certainly at first, be a relief just to see some blokes kicking a ball around again, but it seems undeniable there will feel like something is missing.
A philosopher once asked “if a tree falls in an empty forest, does it make a sound?” and us football fans might quite rightly ponder, “if Liverpool lift the Premier League title without the Anfield crowd chanting You’ll Never Walk Alone, did they really win it?”

Adam Webster opens up on his rise to the top as Brighton’s defender prepares for big chance
Adam Webster and John Stones may share a meaningful look instead of a confused look when they meet each other on Etihad on Saturday .
Recalling his days in England & # 39; s youth line-up, said Brighton & # 39; s summer autograph Webster: & # 39; I played a game for young people under 18 and because they did well, they moved me to the 19s.
& I played there with some really good players, John bricks once. At that time he was in Barnsley.
Adam Webster is a central defender who defends who has spent Brighton £ 22 million to
& # 39; I had been involved in a first team game in Portsmouth, so I arrived in St. George's Park late Saturday night.
& # 39; I remember that I was really nervous in the room where they are all eating
& I was late and sat down with John Stones. I didn't know who he was then and he didn't know who I was, but I sat down and talked to him.
& # 39; He made me feel so welcome. That was what I needed and I will always remember that. & # 39;
It is not for nothing that the couple could be reunited in the English senior team, especially as Webster continues the upward trajectory that his career has recently been on
The rise of Stones from the Football League to Premier League and England is already a source of inspiration for Webster.
Compared to Stones for his ball game qualities, he was inoculated in the lower divisions to earn his top move after Brighton paid a club record £ 22 million – also a record rate for a Premier League signing championship – to get him out To get to Bristol City.
The 24-year-old's worked up from the Portsmouth academy to the Premier League
[1945921] Webster recalls that he went to different tests, but it was Pompey who picked him up
Webster, 24, earned the move after a striking single season with the Robins, in which he was eventually praised as the Champio the best defender of nship and the nickname & # 39; Webdini & # 39; in his club.
Webster laughed: & # 39; For a game, the Bristol City media team filmed me in and I don't know if they compared me to Paolo Maldini, but it was something I laughed at
& # 39; It seems to have stayed with a few fans, so I take that as a compliment. Comparing him with him is a bit much … he won the World Cup! & # 39;
Such comparisons, even the tongue in the cheek, would have seemed impossible for Webster in 2005 when he had a failed trial in Southampton at the age of 10 while Maldini was still playing in AC Milan , played and scored in that unforgettable Istanbul Champions League final against Liverpool
Webster was in Portsmouth's elite training center – only one step lower than the club's academy – although they almost grabbed him at the time let it slide.
& # 39; I was given a six-week trial in Southampton, & # 39; he explained. & # 39; They had a very good team, Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers, James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed. I didn't get in. I was kidnapped the moment I was told that. "
Webster returned to train with Portsmouth alone for a chance to arrive about a year later.
" It was like a 25-man trial, 11 vs. 11 game, & # 39, he remembered. & # 39; I did well. Only six were called back for the next day to play against the academy. Those were players such as Nathaniel Chalobah and Lewis Baker.
Webster goes to Etihad this weekend to become Manchester City champion
I was not ready for it. Not at the standard, so I never expected the call … & # 39;
Eventually one came out of the Portsmouth academy when Chelsea & # 39; s interest left them and took note of the talent that was right under their nose.
& # 39; Then they were from & # 39; we must sign it & # 39;, & # 39; he said.
Webster went through the Pompey ranks, made his debut at the age of 17, but reached another crucial moment in 2014/15, 20 years old, when a stop-start season was disrupted by injury and suspension. place as the first choice.
Webster was in the final year of his contract with League Two Portsmouth, bracing himself to have a decline in non-competition, but the appointment of Gary Waddock and his former youth team coach Paul Hardyman handed him a Lifeline with four games left of the season.
& # 39; Paul has always believed in me. They put me in the middle and I played really well in all four games & # 39 ;, said Webster.
& # 39; Paul Cook knew he would get the job the next season, had watched all the matches and said the club wanted to keep me. That period was a major turning point. & # 39;
Similarly, the FA Cup games in the third round were the following season when Portsmouth Ipswich both in the original draw and the replay & # 39; got & # 39 ;, placing Webster on the radar of Tractor Boys boss Mick McCarthy.
Webster developed in Bristol City and some even compared him with Paolo Maldini
Modern looking – days defender Webster now, it's hard to believe he didn't always feel at ease on the ball.
When he first broke into Portsmouth and was put out of position during a difficult period during a difficult period for the club, he would occasionally even shun not to hit the ball and risk & # 39; s to take.
Now, when he drives out of the central defense and spreads property, it is difficult to determine what his favorite foot is.
& # 39; Haha, thank you, & # 39; he smiled. & # 39; That's a compliment. & # 39; Webster mentions hours of practicing using his left foot on the street as a youth for that side who is good as his more natural right foot.
Meanwhile, McCarthy and Terry Connor receive the praise for polishing up his defensive skills in Ipswich.
& # 39; That side was not as obvious to me as ball games & # 39 ;, he admits with his distinctive self-awareness that, rather than being disadvantageous, he probably improved him during his career. .
& # 39; They taught many basic principles of defense. Sometimes it can be difficult. I would come from a meeting to look at my clips with the thought & # 39; Jesus, I am far from & # 39 ;. But for them it was a case where they showed me that I could improve, which helped. & # 39;
That was Webster's admiration for McCarthy that he would probably not leave Ipswich if the now Irish boss on Portman Road had retained the lead.
Webster was encouraged to show his skills on the ball as a distributor under Lee Johnson
But McCarthy's exit in April 2018 made Webster & # 39; s decision to join Bristol City with a relatively straightforward one. The same was the case when the opportunity arose in Brighton.
Webster & # 39; s representative, YMU Group agent Wayne Henderson, spent 18 months earlier in his playing career.
The former goalkeeper of Ireland said: "Adam had a fantastic season in Bristol City and a credit must go to Lee Johnson to encourage him to show his qualities on the ball in Bristol City trying to play. "
But Webster born in Chichester did not do that
Webster said: & # 39; I played against them [Potter’s Swansea last season] thinking & # 39; I would like that. He simply gives the faith to all his players, the confidence to play.
& # 39; The way they play from behind is really football and ownership-based.
& # 39; I love that side of the game and after talking to him about his ideas that really sold him to me. & # 39;
Webster has had to wait for his chance to do this in Brighton, but has shown his quality in Bristol City
The admiration was mutually identifying with Potter Webster as THE defender he wanted to have with his planned switch to a rug-3 in mind.
Webster had to be patient before the camera was moved and finally, with the considerable demands of Bristol City that made one that of the & # 39; on-off-on & # 39; variety was.
& # 39; It was a roller coaster of emotions in the summer & # 39 ;, he admitted. "At the time it seemed that it might not happen, but luckily both clubs came to an agreement and I have a great opportunity for me to play in the Premier League with a club like Brighton."
After arriving late in the window, Webster had to wait for that first chance. The trip from Saturday to Stones & # 39; City is the next option.
& # 39; You want to play against the best and they got rid of it, they've been & # 39; for the past few years, he said. & # 39; It would be great for me if that was my first game. I would absolutely buzz to play. & # 39;

Edwards has done what nobody at Liverpool's managed since 2004 with genius swoop - opinion
On August 20th 2004, Liverpool completed the transfer of little-known Xabi Alonso from Real Sociedad in a deal worth £10.5 million. The deep-lying playmaker didn’t take long to settle in at Anfield and it rapidly became apparent that Rafa Benitez had signed a midfield metronome of ethereal quality.
It is rare to pluck a player of such immense raw talent from one of Europe’s top five leagues at a price as modest as £10.5 million, but Liverpool managed to pull off one of the signings of the season in 2004 at that very price.
Sitting at the base of Benitez’s midfield, Alonso conspired to regularly dissect his opponents with a level of vision which transcended beyond what the vast majority of top players are capable of.
The equalising goal against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final will remain a cinematic moment of euphoria to replay through the ages, but it was the finesse and simplicity of his every movement on the pitch which will remain etched into the minds of the Anfield faithful.
His classy style of play mirrored his outwardly slick yet unpretentious appearance. Benitez was the rotund Spanish waiter and Alonso was the chiselled Spanish prince.
Javier Mascherano is the only defensive midfielder to arrive at the club since Alonso who has showcased anything like the sheer level of class the Spaniard displayed in boundless quantities.
Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Allen, Alberto Aquilani, Raul Meireles, Emre Can and even Charlie Adam, who lacked the verve and charm Alonso possessed but offered a beer belly fit for a 20-pint bender on the Friday night preceding a Saturday fixture – so 1 nil to Adam I guess – have all been signed in the past ten years to settle into the midfield unit. All have them have been and gone, leaving little legacy behind.
Michael Edwards, though, operated with a nous and determination that suggested Liverpool were striving to buck this trend last summer. The deal for Naby Keita was already in place and hype surrounding his arrival was ubiquitous throughout the entirety of the 2017/18 season, but then something unexpected happened when the summer arrived: Edwards also negotiated the deal to bring in Fabinho from Monaco.
Out of the blue Fabinho was on his way to Merseyside in a £43.7 million deal. The Brazil international was hardly an unknown entity but the buzz over his signing was quashed somewhat by the overwhelming interest in Keita.
Fast forward nearly twelve months and the narrative has unfolded in a manner which only a minute contingent of Liverpool fans and neutrals would have predicted: Fabinho has been the outstanding summer acquisition and Keita has fallen on the moon with supporters expecting him to reach the stars.
Klopp has demanded patience from Fabinho with a steady introduction into the starting XI, but his stellar showing against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon proved that he is now a fundamental cog in Liverpool’s machine.
Domineering, creative, box-to-box, imperious and donning a clear nasty streak, as his questionable decision to clear his nose in the vicinity of an injured Eden Hazard attested to, Liverpool’s latest metronome was a joy to behold.
He completed six dribbles in the game, per Whoscored, a personal record which doubled his previous best this season, crunched into four tackles, made a single interception and completed 87 passes – more than any other player on the pitch – in a performance which had shades of an Alonso-esque masterclass.
It was the type of display which appeared to single-handedly vindicate Liverpool’s decision to swoop last summer, with every intelligent pass compelling the Anfield crowd to coo over this new majestic lynchpin.
Liverpool’s sporting director has established himself as an immensely popular figure since he was appointed to the position in November 2016. His ability to secure a deal for Fabinho, though, might just be his most outstanding achievement yet.
Those tasked with transfer policy have consistently failed to secure anything close to an adequate replacement for Alonso since he departed in 2009, however – even Mascherano lacked his orchestrative incisiveness in possession – Edwards seems to have finally achieved what none of his predecessors could manage.
Perhaps there is something slightly more functional and less awe-inspiring about Fabinho in comparison with Alonso. His role depends less on the majestic diagonal passes Alonso effortlessly used to spray and more on the destructive qualities he possesses in the defensive shape. But make no mistake about it, it would be insulting to undermine the Fluminense academy graduate’s exceptional ball-playing abilities.
Liverpool fans hadn’t seen anyone quite like Alonso in the past ten years until Fabinho rocked up last summer. After all these years, the Reds appear to have finally found the World Cup winner’s genuine successor.

Dimitar Berbatov: A 'painful' defeat for Spurs and United can get a replay Please share.
Betfair Ambassador reflects on yet more semi-final heartache for Tottenham, ponders whether Spurs need to dip into the transfer market, and looks ahead to the Friday night FA Cup showdown at the Emirates…
Familiar pain for Spurs faithfulIt’s another tough day to be a Spurs fan. Any semi-final defeat is hard to take but to do so at your big rivals makes is especially painful and once again lots of people are talking about Spurs’ failure to get to a cup final and the chance to end the long wait for a trophy.I thought it was an even game and there’s no shame to have gone out as they did. Spurs did well to come back from 2-0 down and they had their chances to add a second once Fernando Llorente had scored the equaliser, they’d pushed on then and were braver on the ball. Of course Chelsea had the opportunities, too, and it was all about taking your chances. Unfortunately, Llorente had a great chance to score his second in the match when put through by Christian Eriksen but couldn’t take it.Overall, it was closely matched and I don’t think either team was significantly better than the other over the two legs. I’ll forgive most teams for losing on penalties because any player can miss a spot kick.Silverware drought goes onBut it was painful for me. Like every Tottenham fan I want to see this Spurs side break through and win some silverware. Mauricio Pochettino is building a great team and he’s a great manager but what is this without trophies? This is the latest ‘close shave’ for Spurs under Pochettino, and it’s a tough one to take. But you know, that’s football.Everybody is talking about Spurs’ ‘failure’ to win a trophy, outside the club but inside it, too, I’m sure, and at some point it is going to get heavy. People will get increasingly angry and irritated the longer it goes on because the media love to talk about it, and rival fans especially love to talk about it.Football players want to win trophies and I’m sure everyone in the club is doing everything they can to get to finals and do that but at the moment it is not quite happening. That constant pressure will build, believe me.Strengthening is so tough in this windowOf course, it’s a good thing that Tottenham are competitive against the best and have continually come close, but at the same they have players who should be playing in finals.Without Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Heung-min Son, Spurs’ football was more direct last night but they were still able to bring on Lucas Moura as a replacement for Llorente and that changed Tottenham’s style significantly. Even without their star players upfront they can play different styles. 8 – Fernando Llorente has scored eight goals in his last five starts for Tottenham in all competitions. Deputy. pic.twitter.com/uDLvRpC8Iz? OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 24, 2019 But as the transfer window is open people will obviously talk about a lack of signings at the club, especially now Kane is out for the next few weeks. It’s so hard though! Tottenham need someone who is going to fit straight into their system and that means they need to be really careful with who they buy. They need a good player, obviously, but an intelligent player too, as he is going to need time to adapt to what Pochettino wants from him. Add pace and technical skills and whoever that player is he will be f***ing expensive! And when you factor in that any striker they buy will almost certainly be a back-up to Kane and it gets even harder. It’s easy to say that they need some new signings, but they need the right one and I honestly don’t know who that is!The papers always have an idea of course, but they’ve been making mischief with Tottenham transfer targets this week suggesting one of West Ham pair Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic would be joining my old club.Carroll is very similar to Llorente so that doesn’t make any sense to me. Arnautovic would be a better fit but it looks very unlikely. The Austrian is good on the ball, quick in the first couple of metres and has a great shot. He is confident, you can see in his body language, but I can’t see him settling as Kane’s understudy and there are obvious issues regarding his salary not to mention West Ham selling their star player to Spurs.Malcom has also been mentioned but he is more a winger, similar to Moura, and it’s not a move that I see happening. The other option is for Spurs to go for an older, more experienced talent on loan until the end of the season. Someone who is in good shape but realistic enough to accept a bit-part role behind Kane. It worked for me when I moved from Fulham to Monaco in the January transfer window after Falcao suffered an injury. I enjoyed myself straightaway, scored goals and ended up signing for another season. Who is the current Berbatov though? Again, I don’t know. It just highlights what a tricky time it is to buy a player. In the end maybe Spurs won’t buy anyone. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before of course. Palace next up for tired TottenhamWhether they sign anyone, Tottenham need to get up and dust themselves down because a lot of games are coming their way, starting with Crystal Palace in the FA Cup on Sunday. This is a really serious situation for Spurs. There’s not much room for manoeuvre in the squad and it’s about how Pochettino prepares the few players he has fit and healthy as they are going to be tired, physically and mentally.Starting with the Chelsea match, some of the Spurs team will play three games in seven days. It’s a crazy time and you must be mentally strong to get through it. Mistakes can irritate you a little more than usual, your passion can be a bit lower and your smile can disappear. You may not train so much as the games come so fast. It’s very intense. And now Spurs have another London derby to contend with. It’s never pleasant playing Palace as they have good players and have shown they can compete with the best.A lot will depend on team selection here – Palace are still fighting relegation – but if both teams put out strong XIs then I see it ending in a low-scoring draw. Emirates outing should keep United motivatedUnited are on an incredible run of games. But now they face a huge test – Arsenal are a very tough team at home as Chelsea learnt last weekend.I always liked to play at Arsenal – you step out of the bus and it’s a great stadium; the dressing room is great; you step out on the pitch, the grass is unbelievably good. So you start telling yourself ‘all the things we want as a football player are here, the only thing left is for us to play football and enjoy’.That set me off mentally and got me ready for a big game. Will both teams ‘respect’ the cup and put out their best teams tonight? We don’t know for sure although David de Gea sits this one out as he’s being rested. I’m not too concerned by that though as I know Sergio Romero from Monaco and he is great goalkeeper.Managers often rotate for the cups but even if they do this should be a great game, they usually are between Manchester United and Arsenal. The Gunners are fun to watch and I really like Unai Emery’s style of play. They have great pace upfront with Aubameyang and Lacazette which is really dangerous. But the confidence must be so high in the United camp, and this could be explosive.I’m sure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been trying to keep United’s feet on the ground despite this great run of wins, however you can see the confidence right through the team, they play and run from the back through to the front. The biggest difference is Paul Pogba, everyone can see that. He’s playing with such enjoyment and confidence right now and it’s great to see. It looks now like he relies and trusts those behind him to cover his attacks and those players trust him to deliver when he’s going forward.I have to mention Marcus Rashford, too. He is unleashed! He’s taking people on, running everywhere, shooting, scoring. It’s a joy.But there’s been a change right across the XI. It’s like the team has suddenly realised: ‘Hold on, we’re Manchester United. When we line up in the tunnel the other team is going to respect us because we are the best.’It should be a phenomenal match tonight but it wouldn’t surprise me if it finished level and we had a replay at Old Trafford.

This is why this good old fashion kick off” is getting a new look with a long list of parameters and special rules. First, it will be possible to configure the type of meeting to re-specify the context of the match”. Fancy a C1 final dressing for your Metz - Nancy derby? It is now possible. It never fifa 19 download quite commits to the hinted commentary on sexism and marginalization in football, but we're hoping a future version of the mode continues to give female players a spotlight (even if the entire game still lacks any other female representation). 1982 – Schumacher takes out Battiston
Media playback is not supported on this device
The build-up: West Germany’s semi-final win over France – featuring six goals, including four in extra time and a dramatic penalty shootout – is regarded as one of the best World Cup matches of all time, but it was overshadowed by one of the most brutal non-fouls in football history.
The moment: With the score at 1-1 in the second half, France defender Patrick Battiston was sent on as a substitute and within a few minutes was played through on goal by Michel Platini.
Battiston got to the ball first and poked a shot narrowly wide, but was cleaned out by goalkeeper Harald Schumacher’s uncompromising body check.
The challenge left the Frenchman needing oxygen, and ending up with three broken ribs, two missing teeth and severe damage to his back.
Battiston said: “All I know is that Schumacher was someone who wanted to win at all costs and he went way over the top that evening.”
Unbelievably, Dutch referee Charles Corver did not even award a foul and the Germans progressed to the final, where they were beaten by Italy in Madrid.
1990 – Rijkaard spits at Voller
Media playback is not supported on this device
The build-up: The long-standing rivalry between West Germany and the Netherlands, who contested the 1974 World Cup final, which the Germans won, boiled over when they met in the second round at Italia 90.
Germany striker Rudi Voller and Netherlands defender Frank Rijkaard played against each other in Serie A, but ex-Roma man Voller was the victim of not one, but two of the ugliest incidents in the history of the tournament.
The moment: AC Milan player Rijkaard was given a booking for a late challenge on Voller and, as the two moved back into their positions, the Dutchman spat in the back of Voller’s luscious mullet. The German, in his attempts to show the referee what had happened, was given a booking of his own.
Just a minute later, the two clashed again and Argentine official Juan Carlos Loustau decided he had had enough, sending both players off. As Voller stood with his hands on his hips in disbelief, Rijkaard delivered another gob full of phlegm into the blond locks of his opponent.
Rijkaard said: “That day I was wrong. There was no insult. I always had much respect for Rudi Voller. But I went berserk when I saw that red card. I talked to him after the match and I apologised. I am very happy that he accepted. I have no bad feeling about him now.”
West Germany won the match, defeated England in the semi-finals and went on to beat Argentina in the final to claim the trophy for the third time.
1994 – Maradona drugs bust
Media playback is not supported on this device
The build-up: Diego Maradona had led Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986 and to the final in 1990. He came into the 1994 tournament after serving a doping ban and had been given a suspended prison sentence for shooting at journalists with an air rifle. The dream comeback turned into a nightmare.
The moment: Skipper Maradona started the tournament in the USA by thumping a left-footed finish into the top corner against Greece.
His deranged celebration with a wide-eyed scream into the camera led to questions about his mental health.
Maradona played the next game against Nigeria, but little did he know it would prove to be the last of his 91 caps as he was sent home from the tournament for failing a drugs test for ephedrine and subsequently given a 15-month suspension.
Maradona said: “They have retired me from soccer. I don’t think I want another revenge. My soul is broken.”
1998 – Ronaldo and the final mystery
Media playback is not supported on this device
The build-up: Brazil were looking for their fifth World Cup triumph when they faced hosts France in the 1998 final, one which began with the question ‘will he or won’t he?’ hanging over it.
The moment: At the age of just 21, superstar Inter Milan striker Ronaldo was the world’s most expensive player and all hopes were pinned on him to lead Brazil to victory at Stade de France.
Ronaldo had scored four goals in the tournament but there was amazement and confusion when his name was left off the initial teamsheet for the final.
But a revised line-up then saw him back in the starting XI, although he was clearly not at his best as he and his side struggled badly and were beaten 3-0 by France.
Ronaldo said: “I had a convulsion, after lunch in the afternoon. I was unconscious for three or four minutes. I don’t know why it happened. Nobody knows. Was it pressure or nerves? It could be.”
Theories were voiced that team sponsors and the Brazilian FA had forced an unwell Ronaldo to play in the final, or that Ronaldo had a secret medical problem.
2002 – Keane walks out on Ireland
Media playback is not supported on this device
The build-up: The Republic of Ireland missed out on France 98, but qualified for South Korea and Japan four years later. They were supposed to be led by Manchester United captain Roy Keane, but things soon turned sour.
The moment: Triggs the puppy and the island of Saipan were words on everyone’s lips in the fallout from captain Keane being sent home from the Republic’s World Cup squad before the tournament even began.
The Manchester United midfielder was unhappy with the training facilities and his mood was not helped when the kit and footballs failed to arrive. Keane decided to go home, before changing his mind and staying on.
But things came to a head in a team meeting when Keane launched an unprintable verbal tirade at manager Mick McCarthy.
Striker Niall Quinn said: “It was the most surgical slaughtering I have ever heard. Mick McCarthy is dismantled from A to Z – his personality, his play, his style, his tactics, his contribution. On it goes.”
Keane was banished and spent the summer walking his dog, while his team-mates reached the last 16, where they were beaten on penalties by Spain.
2002 – South Korea, Italy and the Ecuadorean referee
Media playback is not supported on this device
The build-up: Giovanni Trapattoni and Italy would have been relatively pleased to draw hosts South Korea in the second round but what followed was one of the biggest shocks in footballing history, on or off the pitch.
The moment: Christian Vieri had given Italy an 18th-minute lead and they held on until two minutes from time, when Seol Ki-hyeon, who went on to play for Wolves, Reading and Fulham, popped up with the equaliser.
And deep in extra time, Ahn Jung-hwan flicked in the golden goal to eliminate the Italians.
Ecuadorean referee Byron Moreno turned down Italy’s calls for a penalty, disallowed a goal for offside and sent Francesco Totti off for diving.
Ahn, who was playing in Serie A for Perugia, was sacked by the club’s president Luciano Gaucci and, although the Italian then had a change of heart, Ahn refused to return and joined a team in Japan.
South Korea coach Guus Hiddink said: “It’s a childish reaction. Sports means players are all playing in different countries. It’s almost too ridiculous to talk about.”
2006 – Zidane headbutts Materazzi

The build-up: Zinedine Zidane, then at Real Madrid, had announced his decision to retire after the 2006 World Cup.
The France captain had inspired his country to another final, eight years after scoring twice against Brazil to lift the trophy for the first time, and his last match as a professional was unforgettable.
The moment: Zidane’s seventh-minute penalty, a casual chip down the middle which went in off the crossbar, gave France an early advantage, but former Everton defender Marco Materazzi headed in the equaliser 12 minutes later.
The match was heading for penalties when the two goalscorers squared up, leaving Italy defender Materazzi in a heap on the ground. Initially, the television cameras missed the incident.
But replays showed the two players exchanging words, before Zidane stepped forward and butted Materazzi in the chest.
Referee Horacio Elizondo was informed of the incident by the fourth official and showed Zidane a red card, ending his wonderful career in disgrace.
BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer said: “It is so sad for Zidane, for a great player to finish his career like that. Only he will be able to tell you what was going through his mind at that time.
“It didn’t look like Materazzi had done anything – so for Zidane to go and do something as stupid as that, in a game of this size in front of hundreds of millions of people watching, is incredible.”
2010 – France players go on strike
<!–
The build-up: France had lost the 2006 final to Italy on penalties and came into the 2010 tournament following Thierry Henry’s controversial handball which led to their decisive goal in the play-offs against the Republic of Ireland.
Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka had not scored an international goal for seven months and despite that run continuing in the Group A opener against Uruguay, was given a reprieve and started the second game against Mexico. Then it kicked off.
The moment: Another lacklustre performance from Anelka saw him taken off at half-time by coach Raymond Domenech. The French went on to lose the game 2-0, but that was by far the end of the matter.
It emerged that Anelka had verbally abused Domenech in the dressing room during the interval and, after refusing to apologise, he was sent home from South Africa. There was worse to come.
A statement was released by the players “declaring their opposition” to Domenech’s decision, and the whole squad refused to train, unhappy at a “leak” from inside the camp, and returned to the bus instead of the training pitch.
Domenech said: “The decision to exclude him was the right one. I am sorry for the children for whom the French team represents something. Anelka does not have the right to say such things.”
France were beaten 2-1 by the hosts in the last game to finish bottom of the group.
2014 – Suarez bites Chiellini

The build-up: Four-time champions Italy were facing the ignominy of failing to reach the knockout stages of the competition for a second straight World Cup, having finished bottom of their group in 2010.
The Azzurri beat England in their opener, but a shock defeat by Costa Rica left them needing to collect three points against Uruguay to progress to the last 16.
They faced a Uruguay side that had reached the semi-finals four years earlier, thanks in no small part to Luis Suarez’s goalline handball in the last minute of extra time in their quarter-final to deny Ghana a certain winner.
After the criticism they faced during that tournament, Suarez and his Uruguay team-mates were hungry for success.
The moment: With 10 minutes remaining, Uruguay were on the attack when striker Suarez and Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini clashed and tumbled over in the box. Chiellini pulled down his shirt to reveal bite marks on his left shoulder, although Suarez held his mouth claiming he had been elbowed.
The referee took no action and to make matters worse for the Italians, it was Suarez’s cross a minute later which led to Diego Godin’s headed goal. Italy went home, Uruguay went through.
Suarez said: “It was just the two of us inside the area and he bumped into me with his shoulder.
“There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them.”
Fifa did not agree and handed the Liverpool striker, who had two previous suspensions for biting during his career, a four-month ban from all football-related activity – the longest in World Cup history.
2014 – Germany run riot against Brazil

The build-up: Brazil, the World Cup hosts and the most successful country in the tournament’s history, dreamed of adding a sixth title in front of their own fans. It was supposed to be a glorious few years for Brazilian sport, with the Olympics in Rio to follow two years later.
The script was written. Neymar, one of world football’s great talents, was the poster boy and was supposed to guide his team to glory. However, the Selecao made stuttering progress to the semi-finals, and then lost Neymar and captain Thiago Silva to injury.
To the disbelief of a nation, things unravelled in spectacular fashion.
The moment: Unbeaten in competitive matches at home for 39 years, Brazil entered their semi-final against Germany with history on their side.
But their air of invincibility was shattered as Germany scored five goals in 18 first-half minutes, their brilliant attacking play combining with a shambolic defensive performance from the Brazilians to leave the Maracana – and millions of viewers worldwide – scratching their heads in disbelief.
Germany added two more in the second half to lead 7-0, before Oscar scored one of the most futile consolation goals in history as the match finished 7-1.
Joachim Low, manager of eventual champions Germany, said their opponents “cracked up”, while Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari lamented the “worst day” of his life.
It was a major comedown for the man who guided Brazil to the title 12 years earlier.
