If someone saw those features and not get immediately drawn in by them, then there must be something wrong with that person.

kinda interesting its a consistent through line that its typically the younger ppl that are least touched by prejudice or most willing to bridge those gaps in dungeon meshi. Zons child, pattadol, shuro, kabru, and laios from the top of my head +namari + inutade. But notably a lot of older ppl are also willing to take small steps to change when faced w evidence on the contrary eg maizuru calling senshi by his name instead of dwarf and correcting herself and calling holm a gnome the second go around when shes so xenophobic foreign foods listed as a dislike.

As much as I've largely been enjoying Guardian so far, Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan do kinda feel like one of those couples where we keep being told over and over that they're In Love, but we're not actually shown much in the way of why they like each other. Yes Shen Wei has been ~In Love~ with the Mountain God since the moment he saw him, and yes Zhao Yunlan is supposed to feel instantly drawn to Shen Wei in turn due to the reincarnation, but on a practical level, like. Are they friends?? What do they do in each other's company besides hit on each other and fuss over each other's health and Talk About The Plot?

We're told that Zhao Yunlan spends months texting Shen Wei before he finally asks him out, but we don't actually see any of that. We're told they fall passionately in love, but we don't really get to see them spending time comfortably together when neither is drunk, injured, or making some big apology. We're told of all that time Kunlun and Wei spent together way back when, but we only really see the most dramatic moments of that as well.

There's so much constant drama around their relationship and the question of ~can they be together~ that we don't actually get to see much of what, if anything, makes them want to be together in the first place. What's the glue besides physical attraction and Fated True Love?

I feel like there's a certain amount of Having a Good Time Together in Low-Stakes Ways that I need from a fictional couple to really sell me on the relationship, and for all their devotion, Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan don't always have the best chemistry. Even Mr. Electra Complex from Sha Po Lang feels more believable vis a vis what exactly draws him to his love interest (and vice versa).

Have I ever heard of this ship before this ask?: Nope! No idea this was a thing.

Do I ship this ship?: I already have a ship for Chuuya of my own, and I'm pretty much a one ship per character type of person as a general rule (barring any potential past relationships) - plus this is selfcest and selfcest isn't really usually my thing - so no, it's just not for me personally.

My personal rating of this ship: 7/10

Well, while I'm not really into the whole selfcest thing normally, from a purely character dynamic standpoint, I can definitely see why someone might want to ship them; being essentially the same person, they would probably have a fair bit in common, and Chuuya helping his other self find his own sense of self/recover from his trauma would definitely be a sweet thing.

On the other hand, one of the major things that turns me off from the whole selfcest thing is that I really enjoy the dynamics of characters who are quite different from one another, and typically by definition most selfcesty type ships are going to involve the characters largely being the same in their likes, dislikes, interests, traumas, struggles, strengths, weaknesses, and so on and so forth, as well as physical appearance.

Still, it isn't the most mismatched pairing to me imaginable, so that's something! As I said, I can definitely see the appealing angles of this. lol It just isn’t for me. As always, if you ship this ship, I hope you have a good time anon!
