it’s midnight and i feel like shit so i don’t trust myself to elaborate much but. while i don’t post about it here a lot (bc it’s Not Funny and also bc it becomes a thing at like sonic battle sonic 06 and we're not there yet) nova's hypersexuality is both deeply plot relevant and not at all chosen for any sort of cheap pandering, it’s both a reference to my Own personal trauma I had While Working on the au seven years ago (and just to the more harmful sides of online rp in general) and is thematically a very large part of how nova relates to and copes with her abuse. while she obviously was not sexually abused she had her bodily and mental authority constantly violated and had scarily few boundaries when she lived with her father. it’s just that was used to groom her into being a child war criminal and not anything else. her hypersexuality is a trauma response to allow herself to feel in control of her own body, and it’s one that pops up quickly at a distressingly young age, in the same way it is for a lot of csa survivors because fundamentally the way she was dehumanised and objectified means she experienced a lot of similar psychological symptoms. hell, it specifically happened As A Coping Response to being retraumatised by her father (when he fucks up emerl and forces sonic to kill him- emerl was the first person nova was able to genuinely relate to and she saw him as a brother, so she wasn't just grieving but also reliving the trauma of seeing her siblings destroyed and fearing she’d be next) and gets worse when she's undergoing something emotionally damaging relating to it. while her trauma might seem alien, her response to it is not. she thinks and acts differently to a human or mobian child, but being exploited left her a wreck all the same.

been thinking about how nova au would work in the movie verse bc i think her and movie!sonic would be very funny and i spent the entire time watching sonic 3 again not stimming in pure excitement thinking about it so here’s like. my au of my au. uh. sonic 3 spoilers below.

so, the idea i have with movieverse!nova is that she'd be the main metal sonic seen in the post credits scene disguising herself after she failed to simply assassinate sonic. she’s more cunning than her “sisters” and has her shapeshifting from heroes so she creates her nova form as a way to keep track of her prey without suspicion- after having feigned an attack on her by the other metals, so people trust she has nothing to do with them.

so, after finding someone like them being attacked and clinging to them terrified and alone team sonic and co immediately take nova in, bc the exact traits that make her suspicious in the main au accidentally make for a great disguise for a literal alien child. her lack of familiarity with social skills or even basic concepts like hugs, her clinginess and lack of personal space, her being very cagey about her past… it makes total sense for a lost child in an entirely new world.

and, from past experience, they’ve found their fellow “aliens” to be at worst angry and misguided, so what genuinely unambiguously concerning gets interpreted through that lens. she might be weirdly morbidly fascinated by violence and eager to fight, but knuckles is like that and he's a decent guy. she might be standoffish and rude and prone to overreacting, but so was shadow and… they don’t want to think about that. it’s confusing. and like obviously no matter the circumstances the concerning stuff that’s literally “i was horrifically abused isn’t that cool i love that” is not going to be blamed on her in any universe bc it’s. not a mark against her it’s a mark against her family.

but like the thing is! movieverse!nova hasn’t gone through her psychotic spiral like in the main au. she hasn’t been through much of anything, because she hasn’t had a prolonged rivalry with sonic yet, and she perceives herself as a tool to kill sonic. so while original nova has had years for anger and resentment to breed, movie!nova is practically a blank slate. sure, she’s been following orders for as long as she's been activated, but she's been in a miserable haze through that, only getting satisfaction out of making others suffer as much as her. she's experiencing all these things for the first time- and without the anger and delusions that developed from years of endless trauma and neglect, she's like. still developing her worldview and sense of self. and she has a positive influence now!

so she’s actually a lot less fucked up than the og nova! she's still obsessively focused on the whole killing and becoming sonic thing, she literally physically cannot help that, but she's able to flourish a lot better under actual decent parents tom and maddie (not that her dads don't care for her, they’re just awful parents who are at their best neglectful to an extreme) a healthy friendship with sonic tails and knuckles and especially with amy essentially taking her under her wing as a cute little sister (this also means her egg cracked wayyyyy earlier lol) and so she’s. still a sadistic egomaniac murder robot who thinks fundamentally differently but she's got some sense of morality and compassion for others. even if it’s just to make her friends happy. she's also a lot less paranoid and doesn’t self harm constantly! which is a massive improvement mental health wise. dw she's still a deviantart kid goth girl hatsune miku fan girl that’s just who she is deep down that has not changed one bit.

so like, in this case, instead of basically double crossing everyone, she does pretty definitively switch sides- but she's still dishonest and manipulative bc she’s terrified of the only people who’ve ever shown her kindness without expectation will abandon her if she ever reveals herself. but she still does eventually, when her new friends are in danger and she shifts back to protect them which leads to them understandably freaking out bc of the whole Designed To Murder People Thing not helped with her being terrible at explaining so they think she didn’t mean any of it and she thinks they'd never accept her because she's a fundamentally Bad Thing that shouldn’t ever exist so. yeah she does the ova thing and basically lets herself die protecting them bc there can only be one sonic and she’s inherently a blight on this world. which proves she does care but also means she’s kinda fucked.

though thankfully she's not Destroyed here- tails repairs her, albeit in an extremely weakened state bc he struggles with eggman's code on her. unfortunately this means she’s unable to keep up her transformed state (which also means she’s mute) which genuinely despite hating at first causes her a lot of distress bc she liked being nova, even though she also likes being metal sonic. and she still feels like an awful useless burden bc whoops doing the nova thing way earlier in her mental development just gave her way different self esteem issues! she feels alienated from those who care about her and unable to even pretend to be like them so she's honestly even more of a wreck than base nova bc i refuse to allow her to be a fundamentally happy person. so while the problem is defeated she feels trapped between two worlds, is expecting abandonment at any time, and also can barely walk let alone fight.

and then sonic 5 happens and she rips silvers eye out again or something idk man.

oh yeah now I’m awake I’ll do this first actually.

the thing with sonic and nova is that like to everyone who Doesn’t Know their relationship literally just looks like a normal (albeit codependent as hell) romantic relationship. they’re extremely positive to each other always around each other and are extremely affectionate. but not only is it Not a romantic relationship (they do romantic stuff for fun but they’re both aroace they don’t see it as any different to like. hanging out in a platonic sense it’s just a hobby they do when bored) it’s also like. their affection towards each other is both just. another step in their game of 5d chess they’re doing to prove their superiority And entirely genuine at once. bc they don’t really perceive each other as different people on a fundamental level. they’re both sonic, they’re just fighting to see who’s better at that. so they’re actually really open, communicative, and supportive to each other bc they don’t see a reason not to be. they trust each other completely bc it’d be like not trusting your right arm they don’t consider the other a separate individual at all.

(if you've watched steven universe, basically imagine a fusion except they’re still like in separate bodies. that’s sort of the closest i can get to how they perceive themselves. they literally consider themselves as other parts, and not in a soulmate way as in a literal same individual way. which is also why sonic is completely nonplussed with how clingy nova is, literally- she constantly makes physical contact bc she’s paranoid and checking his vitals- while also being uncomfortable with other people doing the same thing. you can’t be clingy to yourself.)

meanwhile with nova and amy everyone but amy thought she’d be the most upset by the nova being metal sonic's organicsona thing bc she's got both mental And physical scars from little planet but she was actually the only one who wasn’t (understandably) so angry at the deception they assumed all the other concerning shit nova did was some sort of weird cover up, she just shifted from “this is clearly someone who's unwell and left a severely abusive cult” to “oh shit this guy sucks but also is very clearly an abuse victim who didn’t know kindness anyway” (nova wasn’t out at this time so she thought she was a boy at that point) and as such she was the first to accept nova as a friend again during the shadow the hedgehog stuff. which isn’t to say she’s an enabler- quite the opposite, she’s the one who pushes nova to be a better person the most, she just is also the first to understand her limitations bc of her programming.

they actually share a lot of interests in common so they hang out a lot! nova spends a lot of her free time in the chao gardens bc she finds them familiar since her father had them too (that’s how she got chaos shapeshifting without doing her heroes stuff, though it’s not As good initially) and also bc she likes being responsible for things and amy is extremely fond of chao bc she thinks they’re cute so they spend a lot of time together there. they also both enjoy fashion, though they have very different styles, and discuss that. amy takes her to synagogue when she’s in station square bc nova has a special interest in religion and religious texts and amy's really happy to have a friend who’s so excited to learn about and share in her culture in a respectful way (obviously the rest of her friends are respectful and positive of her judaism but nova genuinely without any reservation or bias thinks it’s the coolest thing ever). nova goes over to amy's to watch magical girl shows with her and get her fortune told bc that's amy's special interests and nova thinks they have to be cool if amy likes them. in general nova just genuinely looks up to and admires amy a lot (for an organic, at least) and amy's really happy to have someone who'll earnestly engage with the important stuff in her life.

fun fact btw: bc the robotniks are probably czech (ivo is a czech name, while robotnik is a czech word, though it’s weird as a last name bc it means labourer- i go with czech specifically bc i think it’s the most likely intention as the word robot comes from r.u.r written by a czech man) then that means female members of the family would actually have the surname “robotnikova”. bc czech has masculine and feminine surnames. so sage would be sage robotnikova and maria would be maria robotnikova!

oh yeah to expand on that while she kind of has a sense of touch, it's limited to just the pressure of things and her systems telling her if she's damaged, which is the closest equivalent she has to pain. the problem is she fucking loves getting injured. she spent enough time permanently damaged that she got used to constant notifications or parts of her systems going offline to the point she doesn’t feel Real anymore when not in “pain”. she already pushed herself way too far but that lead to her reckless behaviour straight up becoming self harm. if she couldn’t push her systems to near-permanent damage in a fight she'd start compulsively clawing at her chassis. if she damaged anything that affected her combat capability she would be (and has been!) punished but she was generally good enough at hiding in corners and only causing superficial damage she got away with it.

she does however love torturing and murdering people she considers lesser than herself (which is. everyone.) bc she understands emotional pain, bc she’s in it literally like. 24/7. she's able to recognise the fear and sorrow in organics, even if she inherently believes is has to be lesser than her own. and she knows death causes those, and the more prolonged the more intense those feelings get. she thinks it’s only fair, if they’re allowed happiness and she's not, that she takes her own sick sense of sadistic joy from making them feel as miserable as possible. in her very limited defence this is behaviour she was heavily encouraged with since she was effectively twelve and literally like a week old, so it’s not entirely her fault, but she still likes to hurt small things for fun and genuinely doesn’t get why people find her a horrible person for that.
