Top 5 Tips to Ace Your Commercial Cookery Assignments at Nova Institute
Top 5 Tips to Ace Your Commercial Cookery Assignments at Nova Institute
Do you attend to Nova Institute and pursue your passion in commercial cookery? Commercial Cookery assignments of Nova Institute are focused to develop the initial as well as the advance level competencies that are required for the growing professional kitchens. Food hygiene, technique documentation of recipes, portion control and presentation are the main practical and theoretical assignments explored by students. These assignments help in developing/detail orientation, consistency and quality, all valuable attributes in the culinary field.
Here are 5 tips to ensure a pass in your commercial cookery assignments to help you do just that!
1. To grasp the fundamental aspects of food safety and sanitation you should aim at:
Sanitation is basic in any commercial kitchen, and tasks usually cover topics in this category. Ensure that you conform with safe cooking methods of avoiding cross-contamination in storage, handling and preparation. This knowledge does not only help you as a food hero on paper but also fosters habits that will be useful all through the culinary journey. When not thoroughly understood, these may cause misunderstandings that are clarified by reviewing resources from your coursework and government food safety guidelines.
2. Fine Tune Your Recipe Documentation Process
This detail entails precise documentation of recipes that is very important. The assignments will also involve cooking and presenting recipes so when writing make sure you are very clear on your measurements, duration you will take while cooking and movement around when organizing your foods. Remember to make them consistent and clear, as this will make the recipes simple to read, and therefore professional. Perhaps writing a draft first should be advised, paying attention to structure similarity across all recipes and language used.
3. Emphasis on Standard and Quality in workplace Assessments
Practical assessments, like preparation of meals and preparation of certain kinds of food, must have good technique but they should also be consistent. First way: Serve in smaller amounts on plates, or portion control and presentation, and seasoning changes with presentation. Play with spices and ornaments to make sure the dish complies with calorie dietary guideline. In̂ consistent results show focus towards details an important attribute within the food preparation business.
4. Be Organized Division and Develop a Good Time Allocation Plan
This is especially so because most commercial cookery assignments have several parts that have to be undertaken systematically. Make your assignments into smaller parts, create timelines for each part, and complete them strictly on time. For example, planning of time for researching, writing the proposal, testing of recipes and reviewing the proposal. It saves you from writing your work at the eleventh hour, and you always turn in quality work to meet the set deadlines.
5. Ask Others and Review
Your instructor’s feedback for the most part is constructive and this is a good thing. It does not matter how unclear or confusing a specific section might be to you, do not hesitate to ask the teacher questions. Try to work on areas that you were scolded on or changes that were suggested and then think about it to consider it well like planning or something. The process makes it possible for you to improve your skills and prove your willingness to learn, something valued in the culinary business.

Name: Supernova
Age: unknown
Gender: Female
Faction: Decepticon(formerly), factionless
Assigned Forces: Covert Operator team
Role: Team leader, infiltrator and sniper
Motto: "Cybertron has a problem, and I have a solution. "
Personality: Supernova have no concept of giving up. If she was going to do something, the only thing that can stop he from doing it is either making her believe that it is not worth or supposed to be done, or getting offlined completely. No matter It's Autobot spies in Decepticon ranks, or targets that cannot involve the regular Decepticon special forces such as Cobalt Sentries, DJD Or X Squadron, can be perfectly trusted to Supernova and her Covert Operators.
However, unlike many other Decepticons, Supernova holds a high sense of honor and unlike most Decepticons, she has rather strong sense of empathy and belief in fair fights, or atleast disdain of cheating. Despite being against massacring individuals with no ability of resistance, Supernova still is a cold, disassociating killer who would put a bullet into The cerebral module and spark chamber of any marked target. And although she is The leader of the Covert Operators team, she is inclined to not depend on he teammate on missions, as she do not believe attachments to be something that is not trustworthy.
Despite Flatline and Knockout(The red one, who The micromaster one would call "knockoff" as an insult)'s psychological assessment says that Supernova is loyal towards Decepticon cause, they also believes that she has a "slightly risk of abandonment of mission abandonment due to botsonal tendency" and that she would be "prone to disillusionment" due to her earlier life's subconscious stamp on her mind.
Alternate mode: Supernova transforms into a decent condition light Blue 1967 Chevrolet Nova/Chevy II station wagon(earth mode)/Cybertronian station wagon
Appearance: Supernova is around 6.4 meters tall and rather slender in build. She has green photoreceptors and a transformation scheme similar to the Equinox drones of Chevrolet Autobots, with a head sculpt similar to that of G1 Dust Up with a second flip-up battlemask similar to that of Ghost units of Starcraft. Her Non-vehicle robot mode parts' color scheme is silver with light Blue accents.
Weaponry: Supernova has a surprisingly high stamina and intelligence. Under robot mode, she can briefly become invisible to all form of detection using a special stealth field projector, and uses a railgun sniper rifle that can accurately hit a target The size of a hexnut ten miles away, and can pierce energy shield and heavy armor or even disable electronics close to target. She is also equipped with silenced plasma pistol, a electro pulse stun pistol, special tools that can also be used to conduct sabotage and a long molecular blade swordwhich she would sometimes use. She can also quickly adapt to operate most kind of vehicles and weapons she would find close to. While under vehicle mode, her inconspicuous vehicle mode accompanied by The high performance engine, drivetrain and suspension means she can quickly blend into the chaotic crowd and then flee when she is in The clear. She can also drop incapaciting sticky/EMP/Oil slick/smoke landmines in both mode to help her escape.
Character Biography: it is not known much about the bot that is now known as Supernova. It was believed that she was a member of a high caste house on Cybertron before war, However, the house was framed for some crime or scandal, and The members were rounded up and incarcerated, and many were disappeared, while she was sent to the Institute, where she was brainwashed, modified and trained as an assassin, although her first mission, a false flag operation to assassinate the former security officer, archivist, social activist and perceived threat of The Senate Orion Pax, and disguise the attack as a Decepticon attack with the help of several Senate thugs and other criminals including Kroma(sniper spotter), Macabre(aerial watch), Tailgater(leading the goons on the ground with a Machine gun), and Secondcount(eager to be paid to torture some innocent bots) and Timereckon(only one with reservation on the operation). However, the mission went awry, and in the chaos, she instead shot and killed the head archivist and Orion's old friend and mentor Codexa, while the goons killed several archivists and security officers, set fire to and partially blown up the great archive and the underbase, and in turn, several of the thugs, including Timereckon, were killed by Orion who would go into hiding and begin establishing his new Autobot organization in order to dismantle the system; And for the failure, she was once again stasis storaged and scheduled to be dismantled alive.
However, before it could happen, the Decepticons destroyed the Institute and wiped out The Senate and among the assets, they discovered the stasis pod and recruited her as a sniper and Covert operative, and she would make a name for herself in the battle of Clemency where she destroyed several Autobot warships and Transports. And slowly assemble a team of similar group of Operatives. And after The disappearance of Megatron and the Decepticon warlords began their contest for leadership, she and her team would leave the Decepticon Faction and become a group of mercenaries that are constantly at odds with The Authorities of Galactic Senate and The Galactic crime syndicates such as The Dark Box Consortium.
Weakness: Supernova has trouble trusting others, even when she should be more trusting of them.
Commentary: she was originally envisioned based on Nova from Starcraft, and to make Transformers that are very emphasized on being "robots in disguise"

Vikhor ‘’Stitch‘’ Kuzmin
Surprisingly, I haven’t seen much any trivia for Stitch on tumblr yet so, here are a few interesting facts and storyline info bits. Enjoy X3

X Vikhor was born on August 14th, 1938 in Moscow, Russia. (Russian)
X His blood type is B+
X His eye color is bright blue (or pale/white in the case of his left eye)
X His signature weapon of choice is the ‘’Streetsweeper’’ (Striker) alongside the MAC-10
X Stitch is a prominent member of the Perseus faction and is affiliated with the Warsaw Pact.
X Born in the Soviet Union on the cusp of World War II, Vikhor Kuzmin was a bright child and a promising student. He graduated from the Faculty of Technology of Organic Substances and Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technology in 1959. He joined the Operations and Technology Directorate of the KGB the same year and was assigned to the Laboratory 12 R&D facility. Unknown to the West until much later in the Cold War, this laboratory was notorious for developing poisons and bioweapons, often testing them on human subjects.
X Six years later, Kuzmin was assigned to manage production facilities on Rebirth Island and reported directly to Colonel Lev Kravchenko. Becoming an expert on chemical weapons during the six years he worked at the facility, Kuzmin helped discover how to re-synthesize deadly Nova 6 gas based on the samples recovered by the Red Army toward the end of World War II.
X For three years, he reported directly to Colonel Kravchenko as the island toiled to manufacture and test the deadly gas. But in early 1968, Rebirth Island’s facilities and their purpose were discovered by the CIA.
X Acting swiftly, the CIA raided the remote complex in February of 1968 and despite mounting a fierce defense of the island, Vikhor was captured. Kuzmin was interrogated by Russell Adler, who frustrated and eager to send a message to Kuzmin’s boss Kravchenko, stabbed him in his left eye. But he still would not break; he divulged only his name and rank. He was later retrieved by Kravchenko who after following a brief hearing upon his return to Moscow, stripped him of his rank for failing to repel the CIA operation and sent him to the Petropavlovsk Gulag.
X In captivity, a dark desire for vengeance against Adler and Kravchenko grew in Kuzmin; he was given the nickname “Stitch” by the gulag guards after the angry scar on his face. The State to which he had been loyal had abandoned him, and the American had cost him everything. Over the next five years, Stitch had plenty of time to nurture that rage – to focus and fan the embers into a fiercely incandescent flame.
X Two years after arriving in the gulag, Kuzmin was contacted by Perseus, who found him a broken man questioning his loyalties to a state that had betrayed him. Driven by a hatred for Adler and Kravchenko, Kuzmin was receptive to Perseus' vision of Greater Russia. His first-hand knowledge of Nova 6 was deemed invaluable in achieving Perseus' goals.
X In 1976, a small team of operatives launched an attack on the prison leaving many guards and prisoners dead. In the aftermath, Kuzmin was reported missing. After breaking free from the gulag, Kuzmin continued to work with Perseus, making use of his Project Nova knowledge.
X Vowing revenge on Adler, Kuzmin leads a small team of Perseus soldiers to raid a CIA safehouse in West Berlin, Germany. There, he leaves a flyer for Adler to later find, leading him to the Mall at the Pines in New Jersey. On January 21, 1984, Adler conducts an operation at the mall, where he discovers Nova 6 being manufactured and stored. Just as this discovery is made, Kuzmin’s soldiers reveal themselves from their hiding places, cornering Adler's team in a standoff. Kuzmin himself appears from within an elevator and commands his soldiers to kill everyone except for Adler, who he plans on handling personally. A gunfight emerges in the mall, and Adler is captured by Stitch and transported away by helicopter.
X Three months later, on April 19, 1984, a rescue team led by Frank Woods arrived in Laos in an attempt to find Adler. Naga, another Perseus operative, informed Stitch that Adler was secure and headed to him in Verdansk. Stitch then ordered Naga to make the team believe they cared about their Nova 6 supply lines.
X On June 2nd, Stitch orders Freya "Wraith" Helvig and Roman "Knight" Gray to infiltrate a base in Mount Yamantau and recover the numbers data gathered by Nikita Dragovich. After being contacted by Wraith, Stitch informs her that his work with Adler is almost complete, and that what Perseus does in Verdansk will pave way for a "Greater Russia" as the base on Yamantau is nuked.
X Stitch’s Warzone Bio:

X On the evidence board in the CIA safehouse shown in the Season One intro cinematic, Stitch's picture is seen on a King of Spades playing card.
Fittingly, a King of Spades in cartomancy is used to describe "a widower, a man in anger or difficulty, and one given to inebriety". It also represents "a wicked man, and, through induction, wickedness".
..which is kinda cool cause the King of Spades is my second favorite playing card (I’ve always liked the Ace of Spades because it kinda seems lucky somehow plus it looks cool and can usually be found in a winning hand depending on the game)
X As of currently, he has a total of 13 skins.

i kinda of want to address the lima syndrome aspect more but with stitch
a man who has always had trouble finding his emotions and he discovers them in bell of all people
adler’s pet project that he had intended to destroy. just thinking about him recognizing that she’s the one person that he’s most social with. despite the antagonizing the unstable constructs of her mind, he often finds himself idly talking about his past and life before the tragedy. and his help him when he genuinely wants to hear her insight and opinions. he’ll get attached before he even realizes the rope is tied
Yes!! I love the idea of Stitch going through Lima Syndrome towards Bell. It absolutely makes sense to me considering their dynamic and commonalities. Here’s my thoughts and ideas on it which kinda come from how I imagine Stitch’s perspective. Hopefully, it’s not too messy, OOC, or confusing....
Ah yes, the CIA’s little science project.
He had captured her during a mission, intending on killing her the moment Perseus made up his mind about what to do with his once loyal little subordinate.
Stitch knew Bell had been tortured by the CIA. Oh, he knew that. He was even intrigued slightly by that. But while Bell had been broken, he had not. There was a quiet pride to Stitch in how he never gave up anything in that interrogation by Adler and the CIA. This was why he did not initially acknowledge him and Bell as kindred spirits. He considered her to be weaker. Despite this, he was rather fascinated by the scars all over her body. His eyes were drawn to them as he watched from his place leaning against the wall, keeping a close eye on any hidden weapons she made out of utensils or spare things, as Bell changed her clothing.
He noticed the scars all over her body, some matched her skin tone slightly while others were distinctly newer in their pinker tone.
She had gotten as much treatment by the CIA as he had, perhaps even more considering how long she had been their captive.
Despite how broken Bell appeared, in reality she bent but didn’t break. Stitch could see that in the strange looks and light in Bell’s eyes when he brought up Perseus. Although, something about that bothered him.
That loyalty.
Even when Perseus hadn’t immediately concerned himself with finding her, deep down Bell was still the ever loyal one. The only question in her mind was to whom that sheer devotion was directed towards (Perseus or Adler?). Either one bothered Stitch as he didn’t want her to be loyal.
He wanted her to rage at them for abandonment. Just like how he was abandoned by Kravchenko and the State.
Perhaps, this rather obsessive frustration towards Bell is what causes him to start antagonizing the already unstable constructs of her mind. Stitch pushes and pushes at Bell’s mind, bringing up triggers, remarks, and phrases he knows will bite into her.
“We have a job to do, Bell.”
“Adler still runs like a headless chicken with a new pig with him, маленький предатель.” he said before remarking about how Adler has already replaced Bell easily with a new operative.
Stitch finds himself rather surprised when Bell just quietly nods with no surprise in her eyes. She glances up at him before saying quietly, “I am of no use to them anymore.”
Sometimes, Stitch makes the occasional joke to Bell just to see and test her reactions. Something about Bell intrigues the academic and scientist Stitch once was.
“I should put a bell on you.” he says one day, staring down at her as she sheepishly looks up at him with a quiet laugh.
“You wouldn’t be the first to try.” Bell replies amusedly. The little laugh she made was something Stitch liked. It was different from the usual blank and accepting stares he received from the pointed words he directed at her.
When Stitch found out Perseus assigned him to the rather menial duty of guarding Bell, he couldn’t bring himself to be too bothered by it. Although, he couldn’t help but wonder when Perseus was going to make the decision on what to do with Bell.
Oddly enough, Stitch ends up being the one to talk the most. Bell is quiet a lot of the times as she kept mostly to her own thoughts .But she listens well, nodding in acknowledgement as Stitch finds himself talking about his past and life before tragedy.
Apparently, Bell speaks more when Stitch talks about himself. There was something always hollow and confused in her eyes when Stitch made the conversation about her. She reacted more when he spoke as well. Curiosity dancing in her eyes as she spoke up quietly asking question after question.
And so he talks more and more about his past.
Bell looks on with curious interest when Stitch talks about the chemical formulas of various compounds he experimented with during his undergraduate years at the Faculty of Technology of Organic Substances and Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technology. It isn’t often he talks about his years as an academic.
It isn’t long before Stitch finally brings up his military years, showing her the crossbones with the green beret tattoo on his left forearm. His work with Kravchenko wasn’t his first time involved in clandestine operations. Stitch talks about past operations, chemical warfare utilized in operations taped behind so much red tape. He isn’t worried about Bell knowing this as he no longer has loyalty to the State itself and also he knows she will not live long if she tries to escape.
After all, the CIA abandoned her first. And Bell has many enemies, from her days with Perseus and then with the CIA.
Soon everything settles in a routine.
Each morning, Stitch finds Bell waiting quietly in her cell as if expecting him to walk through the door. After giving her the medication she usually had for the side-effects of MK Ultra, he settles in the desk by her cell and works on adjusting the chemical formulas and canister functions for Nova-6 and other chemical weapons to be improved in deadlier ways. However, that work soon grows old for him in a few hours. Instead, he favors talking to Bell distractedly, always trying to get something out of her: a new reaction, a new look in her eyes, or something new she says about herself. Although, often Stitch finds himself yet again idly talking about himself with some curious prompting and looks by Bell.
However, that routine is suddenly disrupted one day. Stitch walks into Bell’s cell late one day and finds her being strangled by the larger form of one of his operatives. What Stitch did next was almost instinct in and of itself. As he kneeled down to look over her, he noted how the droplets of blood from the operative he shot point-blank was on Bell’s face.
When she looks up at him with those wide eyes and asks him “why”, Stitch just stares down at her.
That was a new reaction from her. Those widened eyes and trembling hands.
He wasn’t sure if he liked it, how that reaction was drawn out of her by the soldier he shot dead.
And so he just wiped the blood off her cheek with a gloved hand, leaving a crimson streak across her cheek.
I hope this turned out alright! I’m still getting used to thinking from the perspective of Stitch’s character. I hope this wasn’t OOC or confusing. Thanks for sending in the ask! It was a ton of fun to write these ideas out from Stitch’s perspective of things for once.

Original Story By: Genevieve Isobel Avila and Elizabeth Anne Rodriguez
How lucky am I to be alive. How lucky am I to be alive right now. How lucky am I to be alive right now to tell my story.
In my teenage years, I had purple hair, bloodshot eyes, pale skin and needle marks on both of my lower arms. I had no appetite, no sleep and no care in the world. On most days and nights, I was anywhere in town that was having a party. On average, I could finish a bottle of gin, take at least three smokes of pot and a couple of pills to complete my day. I almost overdosed twice but that never really bothered me, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right”?
For my 18th birthday, the present I got from my parents was as an all-expense paid trip to a private Island in Freymere, Nova Scotia and a three- year stay at St. Mark Ji Tianxing’s Rehabilitation Center for Troubled Youth. I was perplexed upon hearing the news that I was to be shipped off to another rehab because first of all, I did not know that St. Mark Ji Tianxing was real. As it turned out, he was a Chinese martyr and an opium addict. Secondly, this rehab center was located in a private island which makes my chances of escaping quite improbable. And finally, the most upsetting part was that I was to stay there for three whole years.
St. Mark’s was indeed a peculiar institution for the treatment approach was unorthodox. The main program was that each person was assigned to a “social group” consisting of five to seven people. The group had to do most of the treatment activities together and earn merit and demerit points which can lessen or add time to our stay in the center. Also, every night before lights out, it is part of the routine that the group shall stay for about an hour at the social hall to have a conversation and share whatnots. I couldn’t care less about their treatment methods because I know that the minute I get out of here, I’ll be back to being an addict.
On my first night, I was to meet my group and get acquainted with one another. I was grouped with two other boys and girls. I sat beside the girl who was almost thin to the bone with long brown locks. She offered her hand and opened up the conversation, “Hi! “We’re so pleased to meet you Amanda, my name’s Beverly.” I barely touched her hand for I was scared I’d break her bones. Pointing to the pale skinned boy with broad shoulders sitting on my left, Beverly said “That’s Tony.” He had sharply intimidating eyebrows with tired eyes. When I shook his hand, it was really cold. Beverly continued, “The one beside him is River.” This boy had blonde hair and sharp blue eyes. He didn’t bother for a handshake, he only nodded his head to me. “And finally, this is Celeste.” She had jet black hair with chocolate highlights that complemented her hazel eyes, I can tell that she was a little younger than the rest of us. “And that’s all of us.” Beverly said brightly, “So, let’s get to know each other more, can you tell us something about yourself?” I was really hoping to avoid that question so I kept my answer brief. “There’s really not much to know about me except that I’m here because my parents hate me. So, that’s it folks, goodnight!” I stood up and walked my way out of the social hall. As I was near the exit of the hall, I was stopped by one of the nurses. “Excuse me miss. You can’t leave yet. Sharing time isn’t over. Please go back to your group.” I was really pissed by that point so I lost all sense of the word calm and went on to a violent outburst. “Listen lady, my parents didn’t pay this institution to prevent me from sleeping! This is rehab not prison! Why can’t I sleep when I want to sleep?” I grabbed the flower vase on a nearby table and smashed it. Then I proceeded to curse the nurse some more until finally two more nurses took hold of me. “Congratulations, you have earned yourself and your group 100 demerit points and you shall serve four hours of manure duty tomorrow at the farm. Now go back to your group and discuss your task tomorrow.” I angrily walked back and sat down with the rest. By their vexed expressions, I figured they all heard our punishment. For the rest of the period, I was given the silent treatment. So the five of us just sat there in a circle looking like a bunch of messed up nightmares.
The next day, while we were on manure duty, the group did their best to avoid me. The girls also kept murmuring and saying nasty things about me as if I couldn’t hear them. Finally, after three hours of shovelling animal crap and listening to those girls cursing me, I lost control. “Look, I am done with this. It’s bad enough that it stinks in here and that all of you are pretending I don’t exist but you two talking nasty about me takes my rage over the top. So please, if you’ve got something to say to me, say it now to my face.” Celeste and Beverly were hesitant to speak until River interrupted. “Amanda, I’m not mad that we’re here shovelling the manure, I’m just a bit annoyed because you got us 100 demerit points. Now I don’t know if you’re aware but 20 demerit points increases our stay by one week.” Beverly butted in, “I’m down to my last six months and you added five weeks to my time.” Celeste added, “Demerit points are also reported on our records which lessens our chances at an early release.” I was going to have an argument with them, but then I realized what Celeste had said. “Hang on, did you just say an early release? Are you telling me that there is a way to get out of here faster?” Tony replied, “Accumulate 3,000 points, you get a shot at the evaluation. Pass that and you can get an early release from here.” Celeste quickly remarked, “That is if you can get 3,000 merits.” Suddenly it hit me, I have a chance at getting my freedom early. I asked, “What do I have to do to earn those merits?” Tony replied, “Well, first of all, you need to stop earning demerits which means that you have to do everything the nurses and doctors say and follow every rule. Merits are earned if you perform well in individual and group activities. Your behaviour is also important, the nurses take note of everything that you do. But even if you get 3,000 points, you still need to pass the evaluation.” I asked, “How hard could that be?” There was a short silence. Finally River spoke “It’s a series of tests mostly psychological and neurological. There’s also a lie detector test so good luck faking that. Also, the evaluation is only allowed for those who have stayed in the facility for at least six months.” In my head, I’ve made the brilliant escape plan. “Help me get those points. Let’s help each other get that early freedom. If we get out I promise to give you two years of drug supply for free and an invitation to all of my parties. So, what do you say?” There was silence. Then Beverly spoke up, “Make that three years supply and I’m in. Either way I’m leaving in a year.” River then said, “I’ll do it, as long as those parties have pretty girls in it.” Celeste was still hesitating but then she nodded. We all looked at Tony who was last to answer, “I can’t do that. I won’t go back to drugs. Unlike you guys, I admitted myself here because I’m here to get better, to be cured. I want no part in this plan of yours.” Tony then walked away and went back to shovel more animal feces. To the remaining three who accepted my proposition, I offered my hand for them to shake and the first one to take it was Celeste. With that, we began our six month mission to get out of this hellhole for good.
As months went on, I began to learn more about the lives of my four fellows. Tony was a poor kid who was forced to sell drugs when his father died and his mother got sick. He tried so hard to resist from doing drugs but he eventually got addicted at 17. Two years later, after he saved some money, he checked himself in St. Mark’s with the hopes of redeeming his life and helping his family. Celeste was the youngest among us. She’s just 15 but she’s already a mother. By the time she was an addict, she also got knocked up. I can’t blame her for she had absentee parents like me. After giving birth to her son, her parents sent her here hoping that when she gets out she’d be fit to become a mother. Beverly’s cause of addiction was no mystery. Just by looking at her you’d know why she’s an addict – she’s anorexic. She started using so that she wouldn’t have to eat. Even after two years of admission, she hasn’t gained much weight. Unlike the others, River was an enigma. He never shared much about himself. When I tried extract more information about him, he’d always change the subject. I just know he’s the oldest in our group at 21, that he’s the son of a well-known hotelier and that he was sent here after a near fatal car accident.
After six months of actively participating in treatment gimmicks, volunteering in community works and putting on our best behaviours in front of the nurses and doctors, we exceeded our goal by 2, 000 more merits and we were up for evaluation for early release. Everything was smooth-sailing until about a week before our scheduled evaluation, Tony reported our scheme to the head doctor. But with no substantial evidence they couldn’t say we were guilty of what he’s accused us. However, they didn’t let us off the hook that easy. Our evaluation was delayed and the tests were made to be even harder. Our entire plan was jeopardized all because Tony had to be the righteous man.
We all failed the evaluation except for River who, to our surprise, passed with flying colors. Within two weeks, he left the center and was a free man once more.
Beverly who was supposed to leave too was given a two year extension based on her performance during the evaluation. She did not take that news very well and even attempted to take her own life by drowning herself in the bath. Luckily Celeste found her but she was barely alive. She was treated at the infirmary for about five weeks. In that time, it was only me, Celeste and Tony doing all the group tasks together and it was a total nightmare. Celeste kept blaming Tony for what happened to Beverly, and Tony always blamed me for suggesting the plan to escape. We were always pointing fingers and constantly got into heated arguments and catfights which lead us to earn demerits and placed our friendship on a thread.
About three months after River left rehab, we received a letter from him addressed to the four of us along with the news that he died in car accident. One night as he was driving home, his car hit a truck and the crash instantly killed him. All of us were shocked and heartbroken. River may have kept to himself but he was our friend and we had a special bond. The envelope was dated two days before his untimely death. Trembling, I opened it and read the letter to the rest:
Dear all of you,
I know that I’ve been the shadow of the group. I never really opened up to any of you because I never had the courage to share my story, until now. So here it is. Growing up, I’d always had this feeling that I’d never grow old; like my life would end before it even started. Unlike my sisters who had dreams of seeing themselves as mothers and grandmothers, I never had those. I also found it hard to imagine myself having white hair and having children or grandchildren. When I was 16, I knew that this feeling was turning into a reality. With the lifestyle I had – chugging bottles of booze every night, mixing meth, cocaine, LSD and weed – I wouldn’t be surprised if I dropped dead before 25. Three years ago, on one fateful night, after partying like crazy, I crashed my car on a tree. I thought that was the end but as it turned out, it was a new beginning. If I didn’t crash on that tree, I would’ve never been to St. Mark’s and I would’ve never met all of you. I wasn’t surprised when I passed the evaluation and the rest of you didn’t, because I knew that I was really cured. How did I do it? Easy, I accepted the reality that I was an addict in a rehab center and that the only way out was to get better. I took all those treatments seriously and wholeheartedly allowed myself to be transformed into a better version of who I am – a version of myself who do not need drugs. So all that softer demeanour and brighter personality at the end were all true, I was cured. I didn’t expect that but it happened. And the same can happen to you. The treatment works only if you allow yourself to be treated. If you take them seriously, it can change you, it can save you.
Sincerely,
River
P.S. I didn’t say formal goodbyes to you when I left because I didn’t know how to do it. But I’m glad we didn’t say goodbye because that means we’ll see each other again.
There was no dry eye after I finished reading.
We couldn’t attend his funeral so we decided to have our own. In the Southern part of the island near the beach, we buried his letter as that was the only memento we had of him. But we didn’t forget what was in that letter for we memorized it by heart. River’s words made us realize how lucky we were to be alive and after we mourned his loss, we did what he wanted us to do.
Before anything else, we rebuilt our friendship that was torn apart by envy and greed. We recognized that the only way we can get through with our problems was that if we face them together. We made a pact that we must get better no matter how long it would take for us to do that.
The second time around, we took the treatments seriously. Each one of us were motivated by someone or something in our journey to become the best versions of ourselves. Beverly started to gain weight inspired by the models who had curvaceous bodies. Celeste considered her child as her inspiration for getting better. Tony finally accepted that it wasn’t poverty that got him into drugs but it was his own fault; he finally believed that he was getting better for himself and not just for his family. As for me, I was encouraged to be cured by my parents – by the idea that if I successfully finish rehab, I would become a better daughter to them.
Days turned into months, and months turned into years. One by one we left St. Mark’s with the hopes of continuing the progress we’ve made and braving the world without depending on drugs. We left behind our old lives to give ourselves new and better ones.
Today, I turn 25. I’ll be celebrating it with the people I love the most, the people who truly care for me, and the people who changed my life.
Looking back at the things I did in the past, I’d say my life was a mess. It truly was a rollercoaster ride but I would never regret the things that I did because those hits and misses made me who I am now. Those mistakes made me find who I’m meant to be and become the best version myself.

Hispanic Heritage Month, established in 1988, runs from September 15 through October 15. It recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the United States. Florida in particular has a strong Hispanic legacy including the oldest inhabited city in the U.S., St. Augustine, which was founded in 1565 by the Spanish. Later this fall, UCF will celebrate our new status as a Hispanic-serving institution which means more than 25% of our enrolled students identify as Hispanic.
Join the UCF Libraries as we celebrate our favorite Hispanic authors and books. Click on the Keep Reading link below to see the full list, descriptions, and catalog links for the featured Back-so-School titles suggested by UCF Library employees. By Night in Chile by Roberto Bolaño As through a crack in the wall, By Night in Chile's single night-long rant provides a terrifying, clandestine view of the strange bedfellows of Church and State in Chile. This wild, eerily compact novel—Roberto Bolano's first work available in English—recounts the tale of a poor boy who wanted to be a poet, but ends up a half-hearted Jesuit priest and a conservative literary critic, a sort of lap dog to the rich and powerful cultural elite, in whose villas he encounters Pablo Neruda and Ernst Junger. Father Urrutia is offered a tour of Europe by agents of Opus Dei (to study "the disintegration of the churches," a journey into realms of the surreal); and ensnared by this plum, he is next assigned—after the destruction of Allende—the secret, never-to-be-disclosed job of teaching Pinochet, at night, all about Marxism, so the junta generals can know their enemy. Soon, searingly, his memories go from bad to worse. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Elizabeth Catlett: An American artist in Mexico by Melanie Anne Herzog In tracing Catlett’s long and continuing career as a graphic artist and sculptor in Mexico, Herzog explores an important period in Catlett’s life between the 1950s and the 1970s about which almost nothing is known in the United States. She examines the “Mexicanness” in Catlett’s work in its fluent relationship to the underlying and constant sense of African American identity she brought with her to Mexico. Herzog’s solidly grounded interpretation offers a new way to understand Catlett’s work and reveals this artist as a fascinating and pivotal intercultural figure whose powerful art manifests her firm belief that the visual arts can play a role in the construction of a meaningful identity, both transnational and ethnically grounded. Suggested by Peggy Nuhn, UCF Connect
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muoz Ryan Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life, and her own, depend on it. Suggested by Peggy Nuhn, UCF Connect
Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Contrearas Inspired by the author's own life, and told through the alternating perspectives of the willful Chula and the achingly hopeful Petrona, Fruit of the Drunken Tree contrasts two very different, but inextricably linked coming-of-age stories. In lush prose, Rojas Contreras has written a powerful testament to the impossible choices women are often forced to make in the face of violence and the unexpected connections that can blossom out of desperation. Suggested by Sara Duff, Acquisitions & Collections
Hot soles in Harlem by Emilio Díaz Valcarcel Gerardo Sanchez is not the average Puerto Rican immigrant to New York City: he is ironically blessed with blond hair and blue eyes, fair skin, and the good fortune to have met Aleluya, an intrepid guide to the "New Yorkian" world, on his first day in the city. Gerardo's contact with this mysterious intellectual - whose comings and goings are always surrounded by explosions - takes him into the slums of Harlem, the penthouses of Fifth Avenue, and the intellectual circles of New York. Guided by Aleluya, Gerardo meets characters from all walks of life - an unscrupulous restaurant inspector, an Alabaman bartender named Dutch, and Moira, a bewitching Greek model. His experiences unfold in a curious mixture of Spanish and English, punctuated by the sounds of immigrant voices creating dynamic new forms of expression. Published for the first time in English translation, Hot Soles in Harlem is a tribute to the creative power of New York City and the rich and diverse life it sustains. Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez When the sister who delighted their parents by her faithful embrace of Mexican culture dies in a tragic accident, Julia, who longs to go to college and move into a home of her own, discovers from mutual friends that her sister may not have been as perfect as believed. Suggested by Emma Gisclair, Curriculum Materials Center
I am not a tractor!: how Florida farmworkers took on the fast food giants and won by Susan L. Marquis I Am Not a Tractor! celebrates the courage, vision, and creativity of the farmworkers and community leaders who have transformed one of the worst agricultural situations in the United States into one of the best. Susan L. Marquis highlights past abuses workers suffered in Florida’s tomato fields: toxic pesticide exposure, beatings, sexual assault, rampant wage theft, and even, astonishingly, modern-day slavery. Marquis unveils how, even without new legislation, regulation, or government participation, these farmworkers have dramatically improved their work conditions. Marquis credits this success to the immigrants from Mexico, Haiti, and Guatemala who formed the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a neuroscience major who takes great pride in the watermelon crew he runs, a leading farmer/grower who was once homeless, and a retired New York State judge who volunteered to stuff envelopes and ended up building a groundbreaking institution. Through the Fair Food Program that they have developed, fought for, and implemented, these people have changed the lives of more than thirty thousand field workers.Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services

Latina/o Stars in U.S. Eyes: the makings and meanings of film and TV stardom by Mary C. Beltrán This book explores the role film and television stardom has played in establishing, reinforcing, and challenging popular ethnic notions of Latina/os in the United States since the silent film era of the 1920s. In addition to documenting the importance of Latina and Latino stars to American film and television history, Mary C. Beltrán focuses on key moments in the construction of "Hollywood Latinidad" by analyzing the public images of these stars as promoted by Hollywood film studios, television networks, producers, and the performers themselves. Critically surveying the careers of such film and television stars as Dolores Del Rio, Desi Arnaz, Rita Moreno, Freddie Prinze, Edward James Olmos, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Lopez, Latina/o Stars in U.S. Eyes also addresses the impact of the rise in Latina and Latino media producers and the current status of Latina/o stardom. Latino Images in Film: stereotypes, subversion, resistance by Charles Ramirez Berg The bandido, the harlot, the male buffoon, the female clown, the Latin lover, and the dark lady—these have been the defining, and demeaning, images of Latinos in U.S. cinema for more than a century. In this book, Charles Ramírez Berg develops an innovative theory of stereotyping that accounts for the persistence of such images in U.S. popular culture. He also explores how Latino actors and filmmakers have actively subverted and resisted such stereotyping. Suggested by Richard Harrison, Research & Information Services

With the help of a fellow artist named Robbie, Sierra discovers shadowshaping, a magic that infuses ancestral spirits into paintings, music, and stories. Super Extra Grande by Yoss In a distant future in which Latin Americans have pioneered faster-than-light space travel, Dr. Jan Amos Sangan Dongo has a job with large and unusual responsibilities: he’s a veterinarian who specializes in treating enormous alien animals. Mountain-sized amoebas, multisex species with bizarre reproductive processes, razor-nailed, carnivorous humanoid hunters: Dr. Sangan has seen it all. When a colonial conflict threatens the fragile peace between the galaxy’s seven intelligent species, he must embark on a daring mission through the insides of a gigantic creature and find two swallowed ambassadors—who also happen to be his competing love interests. The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria by Carlos Hernandez Assimilation is founded on surrender and being broken. This collection of short stories features people who have assimilated, but are actively trying to reclaim their lives. There is a concert pianist who defies death by uploading his soul into his piano. There is the person who draws his mother's ghost out of the bullet hole in the wall near where she was executed. Another character has a horn growing out of the center of his forehead--punishment for an affair. But he is too weak to end it, too much in love to be moral. The Regional Office is Under Attack! by Manuel Gonzales When a prophecy suggests that an insider might bring about the downfall of a powerful underground organization known as the Regional Office, devoted recruit Sarah and young assassin Rose find their respective lives clashing in a dispute that threatens everything they know. Suggested by Sara Duff, Acquisitions & Collections
The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore For twenty years, the Palomas and the Corbeaus have been rivals and enemies, locked in an escalating feud for over a generation. Both families make their living as traveling performers in competing shows-the Palomas swimming in mermaid exhibitions, the Corbeaus, former tightrope walkers, performing in the tallest trees they can find. Lace Paloma may be new to her family's show, but she knows as well as anyone that the Corbeaus are pure magia negra, black magic from the devil himself. Simply touching one could mean death, and she's been taught from birth to keep away. But when disaster strikes the small town where both families are performing, it's a Corbeau boy, Cluck, who saves Lace's life. And his touch immerses her in the world of the Corbeaus, where falling for him could turn his own family against him, and one misstep can be just as dangerous on the ground as it is in the trees. Suggested by Emma Gisclair, Curriculum Materials Center
When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago In a childhood full of tropical beauty and domestic strife, poverty and tenderness, Esmeralda Santiago learned the proper way to eat a guava, the sound of tree frogs, the taste of morcilla, and the formula for ushering a dead baby's soul to heaven. But when her mother, Mami, a force of nature, takes off to New York with her seven, soon to be eleven children, Esmeralda, the oldest, must learn new rules, a new language, and eventually a new identity. In the first of her three acclaimed memoirs, Esmeralda brilliantly recreates her tremendous journey from the idyllic landscape and tumultuous family life of her earliest years, to translating for her mother at the welfare office, and to high honors at Harvard. Educational research sheds new light on the efficacy and application of school homework.
---
If you ask five plumbers why they always install drain pipes with a gradient of at least 1.65%, they’ll all tell you that it's the minimum safe ‘fall’ to prevent wastewater backflow.
If you ask five pro tennis players why they commonly change racquets during a match, they’ll all tell you that it helps maintain consistent string tension.
If you ask five teachers why they regularly assign homework, they’ll all likely tell you something very different -- from providing practice opportunities, to flipping classroom learning, to engaging parents in the learning process, and so on.
Despite this lack of consensus, the popular justifications for homework generally appear to be reasonable and logical. However, upon further review, it turns out that many of these justifications reflect personal preference rather than a robust base of evidence.
In Australia, a country with around 10,000 schools, students this year will collectively complete approximately 400 million hours of homework. That’s more than 45,000 years’ worth of time!
And this, by the way, is in a country where over 90% of 13 to 17-year-olds fail to meet the minimum basic physical activity guidelines (according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).
This is not to suggest that kids should necessarily be running around instead of doing homework -- although a compelling argument could be made for this. Instead, it's meant to emphasize that with such a massive investment of time and energy, it’s reasonable to assume we must have very clear answers to questions like:
Is homework actually effective at improving student learning and performance? How much homework is ideal? How frequently should it be assigned? For which age groups is it best suited?
Unfortunately, for most schools and parents, these answers are elusive and/or irrelevant in the face of the well-worn “homework is important because we’ve always done it” argument (although, to be fair, in recent years the blind cult of homework has faced more rigorous scrutiny across the globe).
In this video, I examine a research study that can help us better answer some of the aforementioned questions about homework:
Adolescents’ Homework Performance in Mathematics and Science: Personal Factors and Teaching Practices. (Fernández-Alonso, et al | 2015)
Here are some of the questions I tackle in this installment:
What is the PISA, and how has it led many schools astray when it comes to their general homework philosophy/policy?
Is the relationship between homework and student performance a linear function, or is homework subject to diminishing returns?
According to research, approximately how much homework supports peak learning and academic performance?
What are some key takeaways for teachers regarding how we might think about and approach homework going forward?
Give it a watch, and let me know what you think in the comments. And, as always, if you find this video valuable, interesting and/or entertaining, you can support our channel by liking, sharing and subscribing ;)

Soundrs: Ben Eyes

Welcome to our new Friday feature: #producer #interviews The focus lies on #workflow & #inspiration, in order to provide a way to both gain insight about #music #production and spotlight ambitious #audio #producers. If you want to get featured, send a message here on #tumblr or an email to [email protected]. The questions will remain largely the same. Now let’s get the ball rolling with our first of many Soundrs! Indulge.
Ben Eyes is a sound engineer, composer and live performance artist based in Leeds, UK. He makes electronic music as Quip https://soundcloud.com/quip and is one half of percussion and electronics duo STOCKER/EYES https://stockereyes.wordpress.com/
• What are your inspiration sources?
Sometimes field recordings, sometimes instruments I find new corners of gear I haven't explored. I am a bit of a gear hoarder, but old 80/90s stuff as opposed to new shiny things. I love the Kurzweil K2000 its full of 80s/90s sounds but then you program it and get something contemporary, its Max MSP in hardware. I like to explore timbres and rhythms together so that might be having a drum pattern distorted in a cheap fx pedal or using delay to create new rhythms. I am a sucker for the Roland 707 as my main drum machine but the sound of it gets twisted and messed up. I find the grooves I create with the old drum machines feel more planted and make me want to dance, if that’s what’s needed.
• Tell us something about your workflow.
It is sort of split up into 3 really, I am really lucky in that I have a large room in my little (detached) house, I live in the middle of nowhere so I don't disturb anyone. I have a guitar corner with all my effects and amps setup. Then a keyboard stand with all my drums and synths near to hand - I stand up at this and get grooves and patterns down using hardware. Then a computer and mixer next to each other. I have a bunch of synths on my computer table too. I love tabletop synths so you can just sit and noodle. I tend to get something going on with a couple of synths and a drum machine. Increasingly its a small euro rack modular that i have been building. Everything is synced together and clocked from the 707, but I do some weird things with syncing - I get a 606 to do irregular clock from the tom outputs - this provides sync for the modular and a Korg electribe, which I still use alot and have a load of sample banks for it on SD cards, it makes some messed up horrible sounds and also some very punchy drums. This gets the juices flowing. I will record the jam into Ableton then start chopping or adding stuff. I like to use a mixture of analogue and digital. Posh and poor. So I might use the Pro One with a Casio keyboard but through a decent effects pedal. I think having lots of different sources in a track helps to make the sounds interesting. I started out with nothing, a four track and a delay pedal as a kid. Then a computer a bit later. I ran Rebirth and Cubasis, putting everything together in a sequencer. So having this studio is a complete luxury, a dream really. I managed to get this studio together by working my arse off and getting bits second hand every now and then. I am quite strict about not buying new stuff, there is too much gear in the world so I try and get a bargain now and then. I am a sound engineer by trade so I get offered kit quite a bit. The internet has helped also. My room is pretty full now though so its just a question of me getting time in here to work. I have a couple of different monitor options and a sub which is great. To be honest I keep things really simple. The main thing I guess is I use hardware almost 100% now. Some software compression and EQ but its all sounds from boxes, guitars or my mouth.
• How would creative rituals benefit your workflow?
Well I used to smoke a bit and have a drink to get in the zone, which I have stopped now. I just drink tea. Have a meal with my girlfriend and then get into a flow. I like to loop weird things I might have recorded in my job or just play with a machine until something comes out. Rituals are really important. I cycle a lot and love mountain biking. Also just playing the guitar and using acoustic instruments helps. I have a tonne of guitars and little stringed things. Acoustic instruments are ritualistic, they are the maddest things really. The more I think about a guitar the more it drives me to create something with it.
• How do you get in the zone?
Just relaxing, not thinking too much. I do quite a bit of music to spec, and also study at the moment for PhD in Composition at the University of York. This means I have to switch off really when making "my music". I just use music to relax often. As a way to create something that might be heard somewhere. I gig less now and don't release music much so its more of thing for myself and occasionally others.
• How do you start a track?
Sometimes I setup a load of gear and just go for it. If I have a load of tracks to do for a record I just get three or four boxes going together, maybe drums and two synths then hammer out a load of improvisations. I like to work quite fast so I will stay in this mode for a while. I don't use a pool of samples so every time I start a track I try and record new stuff. Thats probably crazy but it keeps things fresh and I always find out new things. I might have one or two loops from my recorder or phone but usually every things done in the studio.
• Do you have a special DAW template?
No I am not really into that. I have fave effects settings on hardware. Everything runs through a desk in the studio so I just patch in whatever I want and go. It takes 1 second to add a channel and assign an input. I use my whole studio like a template really. So certain FX for certain instruments. Then when I get bored I repatch. I have two patch bays pretty much full so they get used a bit.
• What do you put on the master channel?
Nothing until the end then its an SSL bus compressor or the Fab Filter compressor and a limiter. Maybe a tiny EQ but nothing crazy, I like to hear the dynamics till the very bitter end. Luckily my room is flatish so I can work quite confidently in there.
• How do you arrange and finish a track?
Walk away and come back the next day, then keep snipping. I used to be terrible at editing and getting rid of things but now I am quite ruthless. Its funny how you change over the years. I'll listen to things and think fuck thats terrible it has to go. Come in the next day and get rid. I think thats part of being much more sober now when I make music and more of an idea of what I want. Quite often I have the arrangement in my head so I just snip away. I do automation by mouse and sometimes enter some fx with a MIDI controller. But usually my tracks aren't huge so its quite a simple process.
• How do you deal with unfinished projects?
Every few months I might have a train ride or a hard disk sort. I will go through old stuff and highlight them and try and finish them. I have an album I have just finished that was made like this. Just going back to old stuff until it was finished. I'm really happy with it should be out soon as I am mastering it currently.
• How do you store and organize your projects?
Hard drives - I don't tend to store things on the local disk. Then back up the disks, then back up those. Then the cloud too. Mixes get sent there. I am quite good at backing stuff up at the moment.
• How do you take care of studio ergonomics?
Have separate places in the studio to do stuff, guitar and bass corner then a drum machine/synth section then my computer/desktop synths and mixer. Everything's quite divided up. I love my desk at the moment - it has all the desk top synths and volcas and the mac, so I can just record a groove from synth / drum machine world then sit down and add a nice synth, the TG-33 gets used or an old Novation Nova and edit.
• Tell us something about your daily routine, how is your day structured, how do you make room for creativity?
I work a lot either at the University where I look after the studios and do teching for concerts and I work freelance mixing for bands such as Wrangler, who are quite a heavy live electro band. They tour a bit so I go away a lot. I have been getting into iPads for sketches. I have an albums worth of stuff done on it. Just need to mix it. So yeah I watch and listen to others a lot - recording or mixing live and in a way you get ideas this way for your own stuff. Always learn even when its other peoples work.
• Share a quick producing tip.
High pass filter everything.
Try and make space for everything in the mix by filtering. Don't boost too much.
Don't worry about all the gear. Just get the idea down and it will go from there.
• Share a link to an interesting website (doesn’t have to be music related).
I'm reading this at the moment. I love stories of creative friction, fights between creative people are always interesting because people really feel this stuff. Also I am a member of an institution and I see my own politics and watch the institutional bullshit from a distance. I am lucky enough to have worked at EMS and it's a great place. This is quite eye opening if you are into art politics.

• List ten sounds you are hearing right this moment : )
I am recording a band called Roller Trio. Jazz electronics. So I am hearing reverse guitar, bass, sax, acoustic and real drums, the hiss of the mixer, 808 samples and occasional pop of an old sound card ;-)
