Only when the prince’s man was dead on the ground did he turn to her.  The blade he carried ran with blood; it was hard not to look away.  He was smiling, or sneering, she didn’t care to know which.

“You monster.”  She stared at the sword as he cleaned it with the dead man’s cloak and returned it from whence it had come.  It looked, once again, like a harmless cane.  If she hadn’t notice him rubbing his knee once when he thought her sleeping she might have thought that the limp was faked.

“While I’m sure you would have preferred a return to your dear Gaston, princess, it does not suit me.  I’m afraid your true love is going to have to wait a little longer before your tender reunion.”  His laugh was so bitter it almost made her choke on the bile of it.

“You know nothing of true love.”  She refused to let him see her cry, no matter how the memories hurt.

“I know that yours is a buffoon that cares more for his looks than his people, and more for his cups being full than his land being tended.”

“My true love was a man so gentle his lightest touch made my skin sing.  A man so kind that he would rather take pain on himself then see another human hurt.  A man so brave that he would leave everything he knew to go seek a fortune, that we might marry.”  Tears shimmered in her eyes, but she furiously blinked them back.

“I marry Gaston only because my true love is dead.  As you would be, were fate kind.”  She pushed him, thinking it her last chance to get him off balance and flee.  Though she was not strong somehow she succeeded  sending him rolling down the hill.  She was about to run when she heard the words that had only lived in her mind, these past five years.

~~~Royal Holy One~~~ I wrote this piece a few weeks ago and was not sure how I was going to utilize it. Well, as it turns out, it is a great sequal to my recent post. That line people quote about how “[w]e need to learn, or re-learn, how to build comradeship and solidarity instead of doing capital’s work for it by condemning and abusing each other” is true, vitally true, but the only way we can do it is by actually building comradeship and solidarity; the moment we point fingers at an Other and say “them, that lot over there, they’re the ones who go about condemning people”, we’ve already lost.
