the racism in this book is a hard fucking read, and knowing that it’s all what white people actually thought and believed makes it even worse
#rae reads the dragon republic#the dragon republic#the poppy war#i’m pretty sure this book is doing the same thing priory of the orange tree did#where ~fantasy~ xtianity is the only religion that’s objectively not true#it works in this book bc rin is literally channelling the power of the gods in the chinese pantheon#it works far less in priory imo#i say ‘it works’ on a world building level#but like. honestly don’t super appreciate it#i know exactly what the author is doing and why but like. eh.#not to be like a dude from 2009 with a coexist sticker on his car but.#then again the agents of fantasy xtianity are fucking missionaries in this book so can’t really blame the text for the side it’s taking#if there were like. normal people. then it would probably be treated differently#but then again how would rin ever come across normal fantasy xtians in grimdark fantasy china during fantasy wwii
