ANALYSING THE BRIEF
Doing effective research has never been one of my strong points.. heck - I don't know too many people for who that doesn't apply to.
but I’m hoping that this module provides an opportunity to change that!~
in our first lesson of this module, we were introduced to the brief - it’s here that it came to my understanding of what is actually being asked of us..
THE BRIEF - “THE GUIDELINES OUTLINING YOUR VISION”
I read through the brief, and decided to highlight a few of the areas described, and expand upon what type of objectives are being asked of us, and how I personally will attempt to tackle achieving these.
“You will research into the local, national and international animation industry in order to understand where you could see yourself working.“
I feel i definitely haven't given enough thought to where I’d like to work, beyond what i “wouldn't mind doing” since deciding I wanted to pursue animation, at a young age.
there’s quite limitless possibilities, when it comes to figuring out where you could possibly end up - and that can be intimidating, which I think is why I’ve never put more thought to it, as in a way it feels like I’m committing to the idea, instead of keeping my options open.
“You will identify job roles, companies, sectors and the audience that you’d like to work for and research how many roles typically exist like this.”
for myself: this course has sort of rattled what my initial, outsider perspective, of what it is i want to do in the future.
if you’ve been following along through my initial blogs, I elaborated a little on how I would like to eventually pitch a show to a network, and work on that full-time. not that i don't still want to do that, far from it!
but there’s so many areas of the animation industry that I hadn't even considered before; and I think over this module - I’d like to at least look into the possibilities and weigh out my options, as my skillset could better suit a different role than being exclusively an animator, and where I could see myself working one day..
“You will document exemplar showreels, CVs, LinkedIn profiles and Vimeo pages for people who are already doing these sorts of roles.“
My online presence is...
lacking to say the least
I was always under the belief that if I had no use for a form of social media, then there was no need for me to have it, and therefore I wouldn't set myself up on it.
but with the way that the world is becoming more and more tech-reliant, it’s almost impossible to not join social media - especially in the line of work, Im studying to be in..
I think, hopefully by doing some of my own research, on this module, I’ll be able to find the most effective way to present myself online - and hopefully bulk up some of my social media pages, with my work, as an extension of myself.
“You will also explain how you will consider ethics and health and safety in the workplace.“
here comes the professional practice part of the title:
i think its unfortunately apparent in some workplaces that the environment is made unpleasant when select employees don't know how to behave - and thats something I really don't want to end up like.
I think research into the way in which animators are expected to work, in industry is something I would quite like to look into, to educate myself - since as far as I’m (probably wrongfully) aware; it seems to be quite a laid back standard, in comparison to other fields of profession.
SO WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY DOING?
well - I’m glad you asked, title. this particular module is split into two components, each worth 50% of the available marks:
COMPONENT 1
“Write a research report about a part of the animation industry that interests you. It could be about how a specific technique is employed, It could be a cultural enquiry, or an ethical issue, etc.“
we’re being asked, for our main component to produce a 5 A4 page PDF or 5-10 minute video presentation, on a specific aspect of animation or VFX that interests us.
The topic of this is very open, it could be a company, a job role, a historical aspect of the industry - whatever, as long as it relates to the industry, in some way.
I think I’ll give more thought to this, in my own time - and create a blog post, in the future with what I decide on focusing my attention on, as I want to choose a subject matter that is really quite interesting, not only to research but for an audience to read / view.
COMPONENT 2
“Create a portfolio of work that includes,
a) Promotional website accounts b) Showreel c) CV d) Written Reflective essay
Component 2 seems to be more what this blog would focus on expanding upon - as the essay itself is something i can hand in, and it speaks for itself, whereas the components of the Personal Promotional Portfolio, are things I can further explain for your convenience.

Paying for fun is stupid. But we do it because that’s the bill of goods we’ve been sold by a capitalist society. Everyone thinks “I️ need to have a lot of money or make a lot to do fun things. And I only do a thing most of the time if I’m getting paid” But making all this money is usually not fun. I️t doesn’t cost anything to sing in the rain or dance in the street. Of course a lot of fun things cost money and I️ do recognize it’s nearly impossible to live outside the marketplace. But why only do things that you get paid for? And why be imprisoned by paying for enjoyable things? We should strive to live lives where we mostly do things we aren’t paid for, rather things we love doing. Instead we spend most of it working and then doing stuff on the side that we don’t get paid for. Why do we have to work so much, are all of these things we want to buy really worth it? These bentleys, these hilltop mansions? And how the heck did we accept such a transaction? How did we get so caught up in the material world that we are forced to support it through hard work at whatever cost. I think it’s because of distraction. Our lives are largely filled with studying, test taking, being bored, working and other shit we don’t want to do, so how do we get through it? We need little pressure releases to keep us from killing ourselves. To keep us from questioning if this is all worth it. So they keep us distracted. Ultra, frat parties, video games, weekends. Just when we start to turn our heads and question our standing, ZAP!, Coachella!, oh theres a party this weekend? Ill do some drugs, blow off some steam.. life doesn’t suck that bad.
If we didn’t have these little treats, and we pondered all this work and pointlessness, we could become very dangerous to the marketplace. We might even start a revolution. They know what happened in 1968. They know about the stonewall riots, the black panther party, the civil rights movement, the counter culture, the situationist, et cetera.
If we were gonna work, they had to make the work place cool too, some businesses will have a bar in the office, or a jungle gym, a nice cafe.. At google, you don’t even have to wear shoes and you can bring your pets, I wanna work there! Why would anyone refuse to spend their 9-5 here, its so comfortable! All of these little bites of coolness, and packaged rebellion, its just enough to keep us going. Keep the hamster in its wheel. The marketplace is genius. They know we don’t want to work, and they know we don’t need all this shit we are saving our money to buy, but they found a way to dismantle the young bombs inside us and we ended up on the hamster wheel anyway. Market researchers came into to our homes and studied us, so they knew exactly what we wanted, and exactly what else we wanted too. We wanted a burger, so of course we want the fries too, and the soda, ketchup, mustard…the products never stop. So we have to work more to afford it, but the work is comfortable enough so that we don’t question it. So if the work is comfortable, the benefits are nice, eventually you’ll get to use your money on the weekends or over the summer, whats the big deal? Why is it so bad to be a sheep?
I would argue its akin to the man who can’t see color. He lives his whole life without color, he doesn’t complain because he has no idea what he’s missing out on. But we can still see the color if we really want to. Jeffrey Kaplan writes about how they’ve devised a formula to keep us wanting in his article, “The Gospel Of Consumption,”
“Business leaders were less than enthusiastic about the prospect of a society no longer centered on the production of goods. For them, the new “labor-saving” machinery presented not a vision of liberation but a threat to their position at the center of power. John E. Edgerton, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, typified their response when he declared: “I am for everything that will make work happier but against everything that will further subordinate its importance. The emphasis should be put on work — more work and better work.” “Nothing,” he claimed, “breeds radicalism more than unhappiness unless it is leisure.” By the late 1920s, America’s business and political elite had found a way to defuse the dual threat of stagnating economic growth and a radicalized working class in what one industrial consultant called “the gospel of consumption” — the notion that people could be convinced that however much they have, it isn’t enough. President Herbert Hoover’s 1929 Committee on Recent Economic Changes observed in glowing terms the results: “By advertising and other promotional devices . . . a measurable pull on production has been created which releases capital otherwise tied up.” They celebrated the conceptual breakthrough: “Economically we have a boundless field before us; that there are new wants which will make way endlessly for newer wants, as fast as they are satisfied.”
No wonder we want to make so much money, we have too many things we want to buy, and its all part of their plan. The market is even smarter than that. They hijacked cool culture too.
“Nike shoes are sold to the accompaniment of words delivered by William S. Burroughs and songs by The Beatles, Iggy Pop, and Gil Scott Heron ("the revolution will not be televised"); peace symbols decorate a line of cigarettes manufactured by R. J. Reynolds and the walls and windows of Starbucks coffee shops nationwide; the products of Apple, IBM, and Microsoft are touted as devices of liberation; and advertising across the product category sprectrum calls upon consumers to break rules and find themselves.” -The Conquest of Cool
It doesn’t stop there. Anything new, revolutionary, bold, exciting, cool, everything will be packaged and sold to the masses, by the market. Everything and anything cool you do will be quickly be co-opted and marketed. So then we gotta find something else thats cool, but thats exactly what they want. It’s the perfect equation, we rebel, they sell it, we quit that and find something else, then they just go and sell that too. We’re just rotating the crops. But they got tired of chasing the cool, now they just tell us what to want. Cool still existed and it still rocked. True rebellion existed too, the dadaists, the renaissance, counter culture, LGBT, the beats, the hippies, the black panther party, the list goes on. But it’s sort of diluted, it’s hard to tell if an act is authentic rebellion or just something to sell. I️ know Marcel Duchamp was really rebelling when he submitted his urinal to the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, in 1917, but is Marlon Brando really rebelling? When he struts into town with his formidable stature, and wandering gaze. With his blue jeans and leather jacket, or is I️t just a big commercial for Levi Strauss? Buy this new look if you wanna be cool like Brando. All this rebellion was real, but the market eventually saw this and did something about I️t. They sold our little rebellions to us with Dr Martins, hot topic, urban outfitters, etc. These companies have packaged and sold our oppositional energies. The words rebellion and revolution are so watered down, they were even able to make us feel rebellious by our decision to wear vans instead of converse! They are fueling our rebellions so that we feel satisfied. So we don’t freakout!
So now they tell us what we want. Oh you need this new iPhone, this outfit, these shoes, blah blah I️t never stops. How many times did Wozniak say that this new iPhone will revolutionize everything. We are literally put on this earth to buy and sell.
Can we really live authentically? And how can we exist outside the market place? Or at least try? Advertisements for these ivory towers to live in, for these vehicles of mass opulence, for these clothes knitted in gold… its been shoved down our gullet and posted on every wall we pass. In class we talked about how we don’t need all this shit, but they’ve made us want it so bad, that we are basically imprisoned by material. Because we are imprisoned, we must fund our material obsessions, by studying business and accounting, getting internships that put your foot in the door, then a cushy job after college. They’ll tell you, college is for making connections.. you don’t actually learn shit. Nobody uses their major anymore, its just a stamp of approval. I think thats why some people hate college, why doesn’t anyone study art history, or the apartheid in Africa, or the renaissance, music history…why doesn’t anyone want us to know these things? Everyone you meet is just seen as a stepping stone that leads to your palace someday. Oh I gotta be friends with this guy, he can cut me a deal on a nice house later on, and this guy will get me a free car..etc. I got a photographer friend, a banker friend, a chef friend, man I’m set! I mean so many of our relationships are just like empty calories. When you say ‘have a nice day’ as you pass the hostess on the way out of a nice dinner, do you really mean it? Do you want to help her actually have a nice day? Do you care if she does or not? The answer is probably not. But what are we supposed to do just walk out and say no words? I think this is tunnel vision at its finest. We think that this is the only way to live so we do it without question because the unknown is too scary. So then we do things like joining a fraternity because theres nothing else to do in this town. We don’t want to be lonely. We don’t want to venture into the unknown. Joining a fraternity as an antidote for loneliness is gasoline to put out a fire, man. We study to get degrees that will get us great jobs so we can drive to work faster in our Ferraris, to make more money…just running faster and faster on that hamster wheel. Why are we so obsessed with being successful? That equation is why most people live lives of quite desperation. “Well, theres nothing else to do, theres no other life to live….If I didn’t do this with my life, what else would I do with my time?” So who’s to blame for this plutocracy, this capitalist society? Is it our fault? Is it the markets fault? The market research teams, our parents, society…who’s responsible for this! A world of mooks and midriffs! I don’t know, and at this point I don’t think it matters.
Maybe We Just have to Go. Go outside, go for a walk. Life’s joy doesn’t only come from personal relationships and material posessions, but experiences with nature too. Christopher McCandless knew that when he set out for Alaska.
I️ have found great joy in riding my bike on a breezy day, through the falling leaves that shed from the trees above, or sitting out on a doc at some marina underneath the moonlight, playing my harmonica as the boats sway. Hell, I’ve had times far more mysterious and enjoyable then any trip abroad, just looking at the Lake or the beach for a while. Its true we all need a tonic of wildness, but its closer than you think and a lot cheaper too. These things are basically free, and I️m not getting paid to do them. Granted there was a transaction to get the bike.. but these are ways I️ try existing outside the marketplace. Of course brands like REI, Patagonia, Vissla, etc, they try to sell me things I’ll need when I️m off exploring, and I️ buy them because I️m a hedonist too. I just try my best to only take what ill need. And most the things I do buy, I won’t actually need. I️ met a kid the other day while biking. Brandon Stephan Davis. He stood tall and radiated this strange cloud of wisdom around him. His hair was wild and dreaded, clothes withered and faded. He’s a kid about our age, from the big Apple. Hitchhiked all the way to the 305 with nothing but a backpack, an instrument he invented, and his poetry journal. Thats pretty cool. Brandon did that entire journey with basically no money, and not a lick of REI or Patagonia apparel on him. Man, did he have a lot to say! He wrote poetry in a small journal that he kept in his fanny pack, I had the pleasure of hearing one on black oppression. I️ asked him where he was headed, he pulled out a neatly folded map that looked like it had been around. He pointed to this small river and said, “I️m just gonna sit there and watch the water, then I’ll figure out what next. I️ got no where to be.” I can bet he didn’t have a lot of money, but I’d say he’s one the most successful people I’ve met in a while.

Rental Owners Everywhere Should Be Concerned About California's Push for Rent Control--Here's Why
Its not just the weather that travels from west to east across the continental United States. Everything from Tony Hawks skateboarding to the humble Cobb salad got its start in California, eventually drifting eastward. For better or worse, the West Coast has a long history of setting trends and then spinning them out across the country. More recently, California has been pushing its historically low cap rates into neighboring states like Arizona and Nevada, much to the delight of incumbent local investors. The burning question for rental property owners today is: will statewide rent control regimes be the next West Coast export? Oregon Leads the Way in Rent Control In unlikely fashion, its actually Oregon thats leading the charge with a first-in-the-nation statewide rent control bill passed earlier this year. Senate Bill 608 was signed into law in February and immediately capped annual rent increases at the consumer price index (CPI) plus 7 percent. The only exemptions are for buildings less than 15 years old and subsidized below market rentals. In practical terms, that means most Oregon landlords will be limited to raising rents, on average, a maximum of 8 to 10 percent per year. Notably, the new legislation does not include vacancy control, so Oregon rental property owners will retain the right to set rents as they wish once an existing tenant vacates. Whats perhaps most notable about the recent action in Oregon is that while the legislation potentially sets a dangerous precedent for property owners, its also relatively mild in its actual restrictions. Even 8 percent annual rent increases can add up fairly quickly, and with compounding, can result in a 26 percent bump in just three years. All things considered, the result could have been worse for Oregon property owners. Time will tell if the new regulation delivers enough stability to the rental market to short-circuit support for more drastic rent controls. Related: 6 KEY Attributes that Affect the Risk Level of a Rental Market California Starts Down Two Paths to Rent Control Not to be outdone by its slightly damp neighbor to the north, California legislators are now proposing a slew of new regulations aimed at protecting existing tenants and increasing the housing supply across the nations most populous state. AB 1482 advanced out of assembly committee on April 25 and promises to cap annual rent increases at CPI plus 5 percent statewide, except where more restrictive local rent control laws remain in place. In areas with existing rent control, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and other cities, the more restrictive local regulations would continue to prevail. If AB 1482 becomes law, rental property owners from San Diego to Yreka will see their ability to increase rents for existing tenants capped at roughly 6 to 8 percent per year, with no exceptions for single family homes or newer construction. Of all the rent-control or anti-rent gouging bills currently being considered by California lawmakers, AB 1482 is probably the one with the best prospect of becoming law. Taking a slightly different tack, the California Senate is currently considering SB 50, which would wrest control of certain residential zoning regulations from local cities and counties. Its a complicated package of legislation thats designed to force higher density housing construction near rail and bus transit corridors. While there are notable carve-outs for smaller cities and beach towns, many of Californias urban centers would see a significant uptick in higher density new construction near transit. Under a separate provision, communities throughout the state would also be unable to prevent the further subdivision of many existing duplexes and single family homes into three- and four-unit properties.

Whats Behind the New Legislation? Taken together, AB 1482 and SB 50 can be seen as roughly representing two camps of thought regarding solutions to the continuing housing affordability crisis that grips not only California, but also an increasing number of urban areas across the country. On the one side, organized and well-financed tenant advocates are beginning to gain some modest ground in their efforts to bring rent controls to increasingly large swaths of the country. Its likely they will succeed in California, in one form or another before the end of the 2020 election cycle. Early results from the legislative push for more rent control in California will certainly influence what happens in other parts of the country, where rents are rising and tenant rights groups are gaining political influence. On the other hand, housing advocates (and developers) are also gaining traction, advancing the argument that restrictive land use policies are a significant source of upward pressure on housing costs, especially on the West Coast. Many California communities are so united in their distaste for residential growth and its negative perceived impacts on schools and traffic that it has become nearly impossible to get approval for even fully conforming new housing developments. This is likely to change significantly over the next few years, as a direct result of SB 50 or from whatever similar bill rises to take its place should SB 50 falter this year. Taken together, there is a decent chance that this two-pronged approach may yet move the California housing market back toward a more sustainable balance in time to avoid more draconian restrictions on rental property owners. Six years of steadily rising rents and a continued shortage of new home deliveries has resulted in a pressure cooker environment around all things housing related up and down the West Coast. Letting some steam out now may be the best hope for avoiding a major blow up. Related: What Property Owners and Managers Need to Know about Risk Management Emerging Risks for Rental Investors Changing populations and emerging legislation nearly always bring new risks (and rewards) to forward-thinking real estate investors. Lets take a closer look at a few key implications of the forces at work in California, on the assumption that they will eventually impact other markets around the country. First, lets acknowledge that California has not been the most lucrative place to own rental property if youre primarily focused on current income. Cap rates are notoriously low in core urban areas along the coast and are only slightly better inland. If you bought rental property in California from 2009 to 2015 and youve been able to raise rents to market, your yield is probably a bit more respectable now and youve undoubtedly also seen significant appreciation. If you bought more recently or have not raised your rents, its a different story. If your current rents are close to market, then the annual increase caps contemplated under AB 1482 probably wont hurt you much in the near future, given that market rents have now leveled off in nearly all parts of the state. Ironically, its the investors who had the option but chose not to raise rents in recent years that will bear much of the burden of the new legislation in the short run. This may be perhaps the most prescient lesson to landlords in other states, where rent control initiatives are just beginning to gain visibility. (Read: get your rents closer to market while you still can.) What lies ahead is somewhat uncertain. It may take years before we know how the emerging rent control regime will impact investor demand, cap rates, and associated valuations.

Some questions you may want to ponder include: Will the trend of California residents chasing yield beyond the states borders accelerate? Will Chinese and other international investors find other more promising U.S. markets with uncapped upside? How will California (and Oregon) landlords react to the next economic downturn? Will they resist aggressively lowering rents, knowing theyll be restricted on increases once the economy starts growing again? I dont have the answers, but these are all questions worth asking. Savvy investors know that you buy based on where you think the market (and regulation) is goingnot where it is today. Change Brings New Opportunities to Rental Investors, Too While AB 1482 is full of risks for rental investors, SB 50 is mostly opportunity. The express intent of the legislation is to jumpstart residential development and increase the supply of new market rate and affordable housing units as quickly as possible. For investors with an appetite for development, it may be worth taking a hard look at some of Californias transit corridors for new projects. Picking up an existing single family home or duplex at a 4 percent cap rate today might be worthwhile, especially if youre soon able to re-entitle the property for a much larger apartment building. There may also be incidental opportunities to make other real estate plays based on the long-term assumption of increased density in certain areas. For example, neglected or under-utilized commercial properties or even local operating businesses in these areas might see significant upticks in appreciation once higher-density construction breaks ground. For investors outside of California, you could apply a similar long-term buy and hold strategy to areas near public transit in other parts of the country. If Californias legislative approach successfully eases the housing affordability crisis, then other states may eventually follow suit. Promising investing opportunities may present themselves all along the most notoriously congested commuter corridors. Underneath the groundswell in support for measures like SB 50 is the dawning realization that adding new housing units far from where the jobs are is ultimately counterproductive. California is showing an intention to blaze a new path by simply bypassing local control to allow the market to deliver even more housing units on top of existing density. A similar dynamic may already be shaping up in other urban cores in the United States, and state legislators around the country are surely paying attention to whats happening in California. 2020 May Be the Inflection Point If AB 1482 and SB 50 fail to become law this year, the underlying market forces driving the legislation arent likely to go away. SB 50 itself is the reincarnation of a similar statewide initiative that died on the vine in 2018. If these bills dont make it over the finish line in 2019, we can expect a new push for similar regulations on both fronts to reappear during the 2020 election cycle. Political engagement is likely to be high among all camps in 2020, which may help provide rental property owners across the country an early glimpse of whats in store for other markets where housing affordability is nearing a tipping point. How do you think rental regulations will pan out in California and elsewhere? Id love to hear from you in a comment below. https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/rental-owners-concerned-rent-control

Non owners insurance in california?
i am considering non-owners insurance for a car. however, if i drive my friend's car, their insurance policy will cover me. 1) what is the point of getting non-owners insurance, if non-owners insurance already assumes that i don't have frequent access to a car, and my friend's policy will cover me, also assuming i don't have frequent access to his car? also, i know, in the case of an at-fault accident with my friend's car, and assuming i have non-owners insurance, my friend's insurance will kick in first, then my non-owners insurance will cover what's missing. 2) what's the point of non-owner's, if my friend's limits are high enough already? 3) won't my friend's insurance increase since his insurance company had to pay? 4) if my friend's insurance increases, then what does the non-owner's insurance cover/protect??""

Does the Affordable Care Act force employers to PAY for or just PROVIDE insurance?
I've heard so much about how an employer with 50+ employees will be required to [provide] insurance to their full-time employees. Nowhere, I mean nowhere have I read clarification as to whether this actually means they have to PAY for their employee's insurance or simply PROVIDE it, which is a huge difference. My employer (a hospital) has always PROVIDED insurance but they don't PAY for it. They simply PROVIDE employees with the option to purchase their expensive insurance, which is like $250/month for part time employees. It would literally be 50% of my paycheck to purchase the insurance my employer PROVIDES. Can someone clarify the difference?""

Negative environments, and the adverse consequences
Have you ever been in a situation, where you felt so undert threat, that outof no where you have a feeling that doesn't come around often? That feeling that your safety is in so much peril, your brain distinctively goes into a mode where there are two options. Fight or flight? You fight the threat to defend your well being, until your brain perceives that threat is no longer, and you calm down. Or flight, as you could accurately assume, you run away from the perceieved threat. The different between these two, doesn't question your "man hood." Just because you run, doesn't mean your weak or anything less. It's just simply the way you feel is the bestway to resolve your current safety concern. And the categories or how you react (fight or flight) isn't neecasaily definintive, in the fact of if you choose one of the options, fight or flight, that isn't how you're going to react everytime, you ina situation, where you question you safety and wellbeing. Sometimes, you may choose to fight, othere times you may choose to flight.
Moreoften than not, you don't really have a say in how you react, You just react. Sometime your reaction maybe "socially acceptable," other times your reaction is not. Theres a reason for this, its how the human brain is structured and how the mechanism works, and how sometimes you may overreact. Many times, the reason one over reacts is based simply on hyperarousal in our brain. This hyperarosual can cause hostility and or anger towards loved ones, you can't control it.
One factor is stress. Stress is quite influencial, when you look at our human brian. So, we basically have two major parts of our brain that contribute to our actions, and behaviours. One part of our brain however, is more prone to be affected by stress. Stress is something we don't really think about, it just happens. We have no say in it, stress is just a reaction to the envirmoent around us.
So the two major parts of the brains we have are called Cerebral Cotex and subcortialcal brain.
The Cerebral cortex, is the more "thought oreinted" part of the brain. Its where the majoirty of decisions are made. (well thoughtful decisions.) This basically the is where our individuality is housed. This part of the brain is where we decide what we like. Perhaps what music you prefer, what kind of people your attracted too, what you want to eat etc. All of our sensory information is taken and processed in this part of the brain, we need this part of the brain to take action. Infact the largest part of our brain, is infcat the cortex. and ebcause of the size of our cortex, it us allows to be on the "top of the food chain." There are animals that are bigger and stronger than us humans, so how does it make sense, that we remain at the top of the foodchain? Simple. We have the largest brain, we have the largest cortex.
But we, are animals aswell. We do everything animals do. Some of us have a little bit of slothe in us, so we like to sleep. Some of us have alpecca moments, and run around in circles in parking lot, watching law enforcementtrying to catch us. You get the point, we eat, make babies, hunt etc. And because of that animal part of our brain causes us to act like animals, to survive. Some of these reaponses trigger bhavious that we're ot too keen of.
So the primitive animal does a lot, without us knowing and without seeking approval from the Cerebral cortex. Basically, the primitive brain, isa badass, and likes to do what it wants. And usually just reacts to the envirmoent. For example, if we went on a bike ride, and I said to you, "don't sweat at all" Would you be able to do that? Of course not. Thats the Primitive brain.
Its a very interesting thing when you think about it. The primitive brain from day one, controls your heart, blood pressure, weather you sweat or not. And another good example would be... If you wanted to stop your heart for small intervals, to lower your blood pressure, you couldn't do it. This how powerfur the primitive brain is. And you know, as I've noted in my examples, youclearly see the strength of the primitive brain, when it comes to "standing up" to the Cortex. So those are things the primitive brain benefits. But like everytihing in life, theres a flip side. A side that isn't always good.
But in an everyday context I want you to present you with another example, of how it works in a "everyday" type of sitution. Imagine you with your pals, doing whatever your and your pals do. But for the sake of this, I want to throw in a certain location. Say your at a park. Being a man myself, and knowing men, I only know a mans view of things. But whatevr.
So your in a park, and withyour married pals, and a gorgeous girl walks by, wearing little to no clothing. Whats going bound to happen? The boys are going to look. Why? Not because there out looking for ladies, but we will we react instinctivelt to the Sexual attraction, thanks to the primitove brain. But by time your cortex has time to process what your seeing, you may look away...And say "hey, what am I looking for? I have gorgeous wife at home" and you look away, and reengage with the topic or thing you were doing, prior to seeing that unknown female strust besilde you. Due to the primitive animal brain, a sexual intict is a major part of our behavious, and how we act on a day to day bais. Sexual attration is a animal instict.
Now a more powerful primitive instict we have is surivvial. As mentione above, in practically every situationyou have two options...Fight or flight. And that in itself is a VERY VERY powerful instict we posess. So far we've determind that the primitive brain does alot of good. With respect to things we barely notice on a day to day basic. (eating exual attraction breathing etc.)
The cortex is the thought orinted part of our brian that mkes deicions, and ensures out well being, while taking in all sensory information and prosession all out our mememories.
Now with that said, the primtitve brain can have negative affects. It can be shaped and changed. Based on your enviroment, the physiology of the brain can change.
I don't want to get into specifics about me, so I will elaboarate based on a hypothetical situation. The Canadian Forces, who have usually be regarded as non agressive nation, with respect to starting wars. Sometimes are forced to go into them. After 9/11, being a member nation of NATO, which was enacted on August 24, 1949. The United States became the first and only member nation to invoke article 5 of the NATO treaty. Wherein it commits, that each member state to consider an armed attack against one member state, in Europe or North America, to be an armed attack against them all.
After 9/11 the Canadian Forces, were called in battle, a battle that we now understand to be quite questionable, and not worth the harm...in my perspective, on our troops.
Despite the events that occured, our troops were called into battle in a hot zone. In left withwounds that left some of our men and woman in uniform dead, or invisibly wounded. Personally the latter, is worse in alot of case. So when your in so much danger day in and day out, it will affect your physiloigy... Which it did, and many at the time wouldn't have noticed the affects until they got home.
In a military "hot zone," what is there to be expected? Well considering most troops write goodbye letters to there loves ones, it doesn't take a genius to understand the risk. the risk is possible death. They go over seas knowing that the enemy is going to have one objective. Kill them. Shoot them.Blow them up. Mangle them, or do any atorcious acts possble. And the affects you, weather you want it to or not.
Its impossible to prepare for such hositility. So there fight or flight bcause hyper aroused, and the prmiitive brain(animal brian) and accelarated... BIG TIME. Where usually your fight or flight response may happen for 5 minutes here, and 5 minutes there. It all of a sudden is active 24/7. I'm not entirely sure on the length of our deployments(shifts that last monthes) for our military personal. But the whole time they're there, there hyperaroused 24/7.
But being in combat, the hyper arousal is good. it saves alot of people. An instant reaction to the quickly changing, can save your life and/or your crews life. If you hear a grenade whats the best thing that could happen? You autmoatically, wihtout thought hit the ground to avoid shrapenal, and possibly the bullets that will be wizzing by your head, in the seconds after the intial grenade exploding.
All of a sudden, mothes later, your stilll alive. Depending on what solider you ask, they may claim that them being alive is a bad thing, some where see the light, and see there life as a good thing. You don't noitce the wounds until your back home. Home, in our country... we're pretty safe. We don't have to worry about hitting the ground if a explosion happens. The worse thing we have to deal with, is have a rouge timbit flying through the air at our heads.
So when they return, there cortex recongizes, there boarding a plane, and it reecongizes being home. The cortext understands "were safe." But again, the cortex is the thoughtful part of our brian. The cortex to back seat while the person was in harms way overseas, when being shot at. Thankfull, the cortex let the premitive brain, take decicsive action, that quite possibly saved the cortex brains life. Again, that is a good things.
But the premitive brain, who doesn't give a shit about any sensory information, is still hyperaroused. The primitive animal brain or the scientifically called "subcortical brain", or more specifially the amygdala structure of the brain is still hyperactive. Remember, that triggers fight or flight. Without consulting the cortex.
As we now know, its wonderful thing when your combat. I want you to imagine something. Imagine you in the woods, all alone. All of a sudden, this furosios majestic lion looking creature is walking towards you. I say "looking like" because chances are, you've never seen a lion in your life and you don't know what they look like. Back on point, you immediate response is going to be... "how the hell do I get out of this situation?" Do you fight the lion? or Do you run from the lion? Personally, I'd stab my friend in the leg, and take off running, it would up my chance of survial. I'm kidding. But the fight or flight response is beautiful in this case. This is potentially life thretening, a lion would whoop your ass.
So imagine the fear you have at the time. It could arguably be good, and could save your life. But I want you to take the fear you have... and take the lion away from the scenerio. Imagine you that fearful 24/7. It woudn't be easy.
Now, our troops have learned to react to explosin by hitting the ground, without thought. That instict has saved there life. Now imagine the troop going to a nickle back concert or something. And all off a sudden, a firework work goes off...*boom* He's on the ground in miliseconds. Without thinking, he has thrown himself out of fear, and animal instict on the ground to save his life. Two seconds later, the cortex catches up. And is like "bruh why you on the ground? Were in Canada, were safe" He didn't even hear the explosion and say "hey maybe I should get down, take cover" He reacted without thought.
So theres another important part the structure of the brain and how its all tied together and how it deals with sensory information. We can see, hear, touch, smell and taste. This infomration is sensed in our respective organs, and it sent to the brain. But smelling stuff, is kind of wired differently, because it goes directly to the cortex. Because of where its situated...But everything else has to go to a "switchboard" type of thing, called a thalmus. And the thalmus just sends information to the two parts of the brain, the Primitive subcortical animal brian, and the cerbral cortex, the thought oriented portion of the brain.
In the case of the concert, where the firework goes off, The explosions gets to the cerebral cortex, where the infomration is first processed. And you think is the bomb? Within seconds later, the cortex says "no its not a bomb we're back in Canada you fool." At the same time, the primitive brain lights up, and goes back to defcon five and reacts like would over seas and immediately reacts "this must be a terroist bomb." But within seconds the cortex catches up and says "chill, we good."
So why did that happen? Why did he hit the ground so quickly? Its simple, as I noted above, the primitive subcortical brain doesn't understand geography and stuff like that. All it knows is im hyperactive, to stay alive. And The primitive brain is very hyperactive to certain things or "triggers". Personally, my triggers vary to my expierences. I have many, but just for example...I had someone yell at me on the phone not too long ago. And to be compltely honest it was two monthes ago, and I still have nightmares of that person everynight. And the reason that is, is we draw many connections with things. So, in the case of the solider when he hears an explosion, he doesn't just hear "bang." He hears death, blood, body parts, heavy gunfire upon him. As you could imagine. it is not an easy thing to deal with. Especially, when you have no control over it. The Subcortical brain does what it wants.
Another important thing about the primitive animal brain Is the geography... One, as I mentioned above it doesn't understand geography in the sensory sense. But something that also is different is, the primitive animal brain is faster the cerebral cortex. Its literally wired to respond faster than the cerebral cortex, the smart brain. So in the case of the solider at the concert, before the solider can even think, and pondr if thats a fire work or not. The Animal brain has already reacted. And which is good in a hot zone. But by time your on the ground, the cortex, is going to feeling stupid, because, your on the ground, but your the only one and everyone else is having a great time. So that is a prime example of how a hyperactive braincan affect someone without, that person having a say. Because it was a non-thinking response.
Non-thinking response ar triggered by the primital animal brain which is wired to respond faster. When you think about it from a safety perspective, in a safe or survivial perspective, the faster we react heighten the greater of the out come. So, humans have not been around for as long as animals have. Humans have been around for hundreds of thousands of years. But Animals have been around for hundreds of million years. But fo over 300 million years animals have had the fight or flight response. Animals have learned The faster they react the more likely they are to survive. And we continue to carry that... We, have perfected the fight or flight response, weather we like it or not.
The animal brain is fast not smaty... it’s fast. The quicker you respond to dangerous threatening situations the more likely you’re to survive. And so, A child that grows up in an abused environment you could take them out of that home or school and put them somewhere else, but if he or she has experienced significant abuse in that home or school, that abuse has impacted their arousal system, their primitive animal brain, no matter how much in their cortical brain they may want to overcome that they are still reacting to situations programmed in that primitive animal brain which you can’t change by thinking, any more than you can change your speed of your heart or your blood pressure, eat and hold your food your belly for four hours before you digest it. It is fight...A fight to continue, despite the change of envirioment, nothing really ever changes. Sometimes you may find yourself in a "catch 22." Yes, you could leave your bedroom, but you risk having a flashbacks, or having your fight or flight take over. Or the other side of the coin, is you could stay in you room, and feel safer, because you know what triggers you'll face that day.
I wanna mention a little bit about irritability. So there was a girlfriend and man at home. And the girl asked her boyfriend “yo, can you take out the trash for me?” and he's like “Sure no problem. I’ll take out the garbage. I mean youv've housed our kids.” So the guy got up, took out the garbage and without the girl noticing, he came back in the house and sat down.
Now meanwhile the girlfriends walked into another room where the two kids were. And the two kids had spilled juice all over the brand new carpet. She was pissed she’s got this new carpetw with a huge stain, she’s pissed. Yelling to no one in particular..."Why these kids spilled juice here", "why did we re-do the carpet" so with this nasty stain on the floor, she angry. But she’s not mad at her boyfriend... but she comes back to where she and her boyfriend were sitting moments prior with angry look on her face.... Now, perhaps her boyfrined is tired or stressed with work stuff on or whatever. He's not particularly in a great mood. She comes back to him now and she got an angry look on her face and she goes, did you take out that trash like I asked you?(with audible annoyance in her voice) He starts cursing at her and yelling at her. so what happened? How did she approach her boyrfirned? Annoyed? angry? Hosile?
What’s the fastest part of the brain that responds to sensory information coming in as an angry face and angry tone of voice? The fastest part of the brain that respond is what the primitive animal brain, in order for that man to recognize hey that my little boo boo bear talking about the garbage, he needs his memory and his cortex to recognize his girlfriend and to recognize thewords "did you take out the garbage?" When he responded he didn’t respond to his girlfirned, he responded to the aggressve percieved threatenging tone of voice and the hostile face that she presented. Now of course when he yells at his gal, she yelled like that back now all of a sudden And now they’re in a big argument over nonsense. Their intelligent cerebral cortex brain made a decision hey I love this girl. Let’s get married and live happily ever after. Let’s have a wonderful life together. You’re awesome. and they say all the other cheesy shit happy couples say to one another. But in the heat of the oment, the intelegence of the cerebral cortex was gone. And the subcortical brain was reacting, causing them to get into a situation that is not only stupid, but an argument, that you would have never had, should your cerebral cortex brain be the one in charge. So what I'm getting to when the brain is hyperarousd, or if its stressed out, you can say things or react in ways that make no sense. The hbyperarousal, of personal sitation, is something I will never speak of, because its one of the most consistant battles I continue to fight. The ever so present fight or flight in my life, interferes with other parts of my life. keeping me up, usually takes over my memory, because I'm thinking of all stress, and situations unknowingly. Its very hard. And I'm not talking about my conscious brain. Where I'm thinking about things, and plotting life out and my goals, using my thought oriented brain. I'm talkling about the hyper arousal brain, thats been stimulated by stuff that, most people will have no clue of. To be honest its hard to manage sometimes, because of the stress hormones that are seemingly always being released, it justactivates parts of the brain and memeory because very difficult for me, Concentration and attention is also a constant problem. The problems are not because I have a shit memory, or it could be debated I'm a shit person...But I think its more of problem that my attention is always being diverted to stresss and other factors I continue to battle.
So for anyone, ive ever offended, or let our relationship die. I apologize.

Despite me originally intending to do a new walk today I changed my plans late last night when I was unexpectedly invited out for a bank holiday lunch at the George in the Tree at Balsall Common.
I’ve been here a few times in the past – but not often for good reasons.
Most recently this perfectly nice pub has somehow become completely associated in my mind with meeting relatives after my mom died in January last year – and a sense of personal failure surrounding this already grim event.
Not only did I have to agree funeral details with relatives that I hardly knew – but also I was hovering around 35 stone and visibly not coping very well at all in life.
This was me around three weeks after those events, having not long given up drinking, but still three months away from joining Slimming World.

It occurred to me when a friend suggested I join them there today that not only I could start to attach more positive memories to this place but that I could kill two birds with one stone and also get my exercise in for the day.
I could probably now walk all the way there from my house – but then making my way back would probably have been a step too far.
It’s a round trip of 20 miles.
When I wasn’t working if I overdid things then I could just rest up the day after for a bit. However now I don’t have that luxury. I need to be match fit every day to walk back and forth to my job.
I opted instead for the shorter Kenilworth Greenway (about 11 miles round trip), and leaving my car at Crackley Wood – which means I didn’t have to walk along any busy roads and that I also got some nice views too.
The woods looked great just before 10am today, and a wonderful dappled light was playing on the ground everywhere as the canopy above me gently swayed in the breeze.

Initially this morning was a little overcast, despite being quite warm – but as I moved through the woods and onto the greenway it was clear that any clouds were not going to last long, and they were swiftly clearing to make way for blue skies.

I didn’t really know exactly how long it would take me to walk to my destination, so I tried to keep exploration and the impulse to photograph everything to a minimum and just keep moving forward.
Although the Greenway is pretty easy going on the way to Balsall Common it has a continuous incline. When I first did this walk (link) back in April I forgot to set a workout programme – but when I checked Apple watch I remember it showed my heart rate as above 100 bpm. My workout today shows an average of 88 on the outward journey, and on the greenway I didn’t once see it go above 95 – which is really cool progress!
I’m definitely getting a lot fitter!

One of the things that I really love about this particular walk is the bridges.
This is for two reasons.
Firstly (and quite without warning) I’ve become a huge fan of red brick construction. It really boggles my mind that these days we just set steel rods in hundreds of tons of concrete, bolt it all together, and voila!
A bridge!
Sure – they’re strong, light, flexible, resilient and safe – but boy oh boy is concrete UGLY. In contrast railway bridges pieced together, brick by individual brick – now THOSE are things of beauty.
Secondly this Greenway and its bridges are slowly being eaten by nature – and that too is jaw droppingly lovely at times.

When I finally arrived at the Beefeater I was a lot earlier than expected. The whole walk (almost exactly five miles) had taken around 90 minutes, so I sat outside in the shade and changed my (slightly sweaty) teeshirt for a long sleeved one I’d brought along to look a little more presentable.
Shortly before midday I went in and was led to the table my friends had booked.
It was a booth.
There’s still a part of me that has a complete meltdown when I see fixed seating.
I can’t seem to get it through to my panic subroutines that I fit into them now – but I guess thats because it’s really only been a few months since that’s been the case. Partially because of this I’m still taking evidential pictures to prove to myself that I can do it – which I’m starting to think may be a little daft.

However I still find it almost as much of a novelty as seatbelts that actually go around me and click into place in other people’s cars.
I may stop taking these kind of pictures one day… but not today!
I’d already decided waaaaay before arriving that I wasn’t going to get into an ‘I’ve done lots of exercise so I can eat what I like’ mentality, and that I was going to avoid things like mixed grills (what I used to choose when I came here previously) and instead have a salad and a baked potato on the side.
I ordered the chicken Caesar.
What arrived was not Caesar salad (not in my eyes anyway) and was clearly deep fried breaded chicken. Normally I wouldn’t go near anything fried in breadcrumbs – but I reasoned that at the very worst this would just use up my syns for the day and negate some of my exercise I’d already done, so I tucked in.

Honestly – I’m glad I did, because with the (butter free) baked potato I’d ordered on the side this ended up being quite filling and tasty – which was a complete win.
As it’s been a while since I’d seen my friends we sat chatting over drinks for a while after the meal ended. They’re absolutely loving their National Trust memberships at the moment and are using it regularly to go and explore some of the local National Trust estates.
I’d not considered joining before – but they may well have sold the whole thing to me! However – that’s for another day when I have some spare money. In the meantime I’m strictly a cheap walk kinda guy…
A twalker can dream though!
After we said our goodbyes I headed back (a slightly longer way) toward my car. It was now getting a LOT hotter and I’d changed back into my short sleeved top. In retrospect (as I sit scratching my sunburnt upper arms while I type) this may have been a tactical error – but you live and learn.
The way back was at a slightly slower pace, and it gave me the opportunity to look a little closer at the hedgerows and bushes, which were full of butterflies!

I also just missed a shot of a bird of prey hanging on the breeze over the fields surrounding the walk. As I readied my camera it swooped towards its target and disappeared from view. I can’t say for sure what it was but I think it was a Kestrel.
Since getting any pictures of things in the sky seemed impossible I busied myself instead with the floor, which I ‘d realised was covered with hidden mushroom colonies!

By the time I arrived home I felt well exercised, satisfied, and like I’d made full use of my Bank Holiday weekend.
There was a time when I’d have bought myself a new video game and many litres of wine for such an occasion – but I think the way I use my free time now is a far better use of my health and happiness.
I’ve managed 35 miles and around 70,000 steps in the last three days.
I feel content, pleasantly tired and I know that when I get back to work tomorrow internet I’ll have a sense of pride that not a single moment has been wasted.
Davey
Not a single moment wasted Despite me originally intending to do a new walk today I changed my plans late last night when I was unexpectedly invited out for a bank holiday lunch at the…

Business Green: Tech billionaire predicts innovation will deliver the clean energy the world desperately needs, but only if young people, businesses, and governments step up to the plate
Bill Gates has predicted researchers will discover a clean energy breakthrough that will save our planet and power our world within the next 15 years.
In their annual open letter, Bill and Melinda Gates provide an update on their plans to stimulate innovation in technologies for tackling climate change, energy poverty, and gender inequality.
In Bills section of the letter, which is addressed to teenagers, the Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist argues it should be a development priority to deliver clean energy to the 1.3 billion people who do not have access to power.
He also stresses that the new power needs to be low carbon in order to tackle the risks presented by climate change. If we really want to help the worlds poorest families, we need to find a way to get them cheap, clean energy, he writes. Cheap because everyone must be able to afford it. Clean because it must not emit any carbon dioxide – which is driving climate change.
And Gates argues the goal has to be truly zero emission power. Cant we just aim to cut carbon emissions in half? I asked many scientists, Gates wrote. But they all agreed that wouldnt be enough. The problem is that CO2 lingers in the atmosphere for decades. Even if we halted carbon emissions tomorrow, the temperature would still rise because of the carbon thats already been released. No, we need to get all the way down to zero.
In something of a break from past comments when Gates has been critical of renewable energy technologies, once dismissing wind and solar power as cute, the letter welcomes recent rapid progress on renewable energy.
New green technologies are allowing the world to produce more carbon-free energy from solar and wind power, he writes. Maybe you live near a wind farm or have seen solar panels near your school. Its great that these are getting cheaper and more people are using them. We should use more of them where it makes sense, like in places where its especially sunny or windy. And by installing special new power lines we could make even more use of solar and wind power.
However, he reiterates his view that to stop climate change and make energy affordable for everyone, the world will need some new inventions.
We need more powerful, more economical solutions, Gates writes. In short, we need an energy miracle. When I say miracle, I dont mean something thats impossible. Ive seen miracles happen before. The personal computer. The Internet. The polio vaccine. None of them happened by chance. They are the result of research and development and the human capacity to innovate.
Gates argues that a combination of private sector research and development, such as his recently launched Energy Breakthrough Coalition, government action, and individual endeavour can combine to deliver a new generation of clean energy technologies.
We need a massive amount of research into thousands of new ideas even ones that might sound a little crazy if we want to get to zero emissions by the end of this century, he said. New ways to make solar and wind power available to everyone around the clock could be one solution. Some of the crazier inventions Im excited about are a possible way to use solar energy to produce fuel, much like plants use sunlight to make food for themselves, and batteries the size of swimming pools with huge storage capacity.
Many of these ideas wont work, but thats okay. Each dead end will teach us something useful and keep us moving forward. As Thomas Edison famously said, I have not failed 10,000 times. Ive successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.
Gates also urged young people to engage with the energy challenge. You may be wondering what you can do to help, he wrote. First, its important for everyone to get educated about this energy challenge. Many young people are already actively involved in climate and energy issues and Im sure they could use more help. Your generation is one of the most globally minded in history, adept at looking at our worlds problems beyond national borders. This will be a valuable asset as we work on global solutions in the decades ahead.
Second, if youre someone with some crazy-sounding ideas to solve our energy challenge, the world needs you. Study extra hard in your math and sciences. You might just have the answer.
In a separate interview to promote the letter with news agency Bloomberg, Gates provided more detail on how a global clean energy R&D push could be orchestrated and offered an insight into why he is so confident a breakthrough will materialise.
What we need to get that probability [of a breakthrough] up to be very high is to take 12 or so paths to get there, he told the news agency. Like carbon capture and sequestration is a path. Nuclear fission is a path. Nuclear fusion is a path. Solar fuels are a path. For every one of those paths, you need about five very diverse groups of scientists who think the other four groups are wrong and crazy.
He also revealed the Breakthrough Energy Coalition is working on new investment approaches that would provide more patient capital than that offered by traditional venture capital funds, allowing for greater investment in long term R&D efforts.

Somebody Tell Donald TrumpRussia Is Still an Adversary
A lookout from the FBIs Special Surveillance Group keeps daily watch outside each of the main Russian facilities in New York and Washington, D.C.
At the appearance of a Russian of significance, the lookout alerts other SSG members. The familiar targets are referred to by a number, as in Number 2 is out.
The SSG memberswho are not FBI agents, but surveillance specialiststhereupon set to following the subject.
The SSG members then report what they observe to FBI agents assigned to the counterintelligence division.
And so it has gone for day after day, month after month, year after year, even as many Americans ceased to think of Russia as an adversary.
At the same time, those inside the Russian facilities have had continued reason to fear their conversations are recorded.
The reason for this ongoing physical and electronic surveillance is that the Russians in fact remain a hostile power.
The Russians are an adversary, says Eric ONeill, formerly an SSG operative who helped catch an FBI agent turned Russian spy and now serves as national security strategist for Carbon Black. The Russians have never stopped being an adversary.
Proof of that came in Putins unprecedented effort to influence the course of the 2016 election and thereby undermine the democratic process that is at the core of Americas actual greatness.
Look what they did to the state of our politics, ONeill says.
The Russian president must have figured that he would at the very least weaken Hillary Clinton. He did not likely expect that The Donald would actually win.
The ultimate winner was Vladimir Putin himself. He achieved the seemingly impossible by capitalizing on what is worst in us.
The hacking would not have made a decisive difference had the contents of the DNC emails not been so lousy.
And Trump supporters did little more than shrug when it became apparent that the Russians used the fruits of a felony to put him in the White House.
So much for America First! and wearing flag-lapel pins and endlessly invoking the best interests of the American People. The news was hardly the primary place for fake to be found.
Meanwhile, ongoing electronic surveillance seemed to prove that the new national security adviser, Michael Flynn, had lied when he said he had not discussed sanctions with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak in the weeks before the inauguration. The FBI and the Justice Department feared that the Russians might blackmail Flynn as they had been known to do in the past with less prominent Americans, such as a sergeant from Oklahoma whom they contrived to film with two women in a Moscow hotel room back in 1957.
Acting Attorney General Sally Yates notified the White House, which did nothing for 18 days and might have gone on doing nothing had The Washington Post not reported that Flynn had lied to Vice President Mike Pence, among others. Trump only then fired Flynn, who remained the subject of an FBI investigation as the result of other dealings with the Russians. Trump reportedly asked FBI Director James Comey to shut down the probe, saying, I hope you can let this go.
Comey declined and that was surely one reason why Trump subsequently fired him even though the FBI was in the midst of the continued investigation into Russian meddling in the election. Trump followed that bit of recklessness by hosting a White House visit one day later with none other than the Russian ambassador Kislyak, along with the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov.
Imagine how the SSG operatives who routinely follow Kislyak must have felt when they subsequently heard the reports of what transpired in that Oval Office meeting.
As if out of a Russian spys wildest dreams, the president of the United States personally presented his two visitors with intelligence that had been given to us by another country on the condition we keep it to ourselves.
Rather than go to all the trouble of entrapping some poor soul with a honey trap and blackmailing him into providing ever more sensitive information through secret codes and dead drops, the Russian had needed simply to walk into the Oval Office to get the most highly sensitive stuff without even asking for it.
And, according to a White House document quoted by The New York Times, there was more.
Trump reportedly also told the two Russians, I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. Thats taken off.
In other words, the president was telling the Russians that he had fired the head of the organization that has long been charged with countering Russias intelligence efforts in America and is presently conducting an investigation into Russias meddling in the election and possible Russian connections with members of the Trump campaign.
The Russians may have waxed a little nostalgic on hearing Trump talk of Comey as a real nut job, as it was a standard ploy during the Soviet era to brand an opponent as mentally ill.
But you have to wonder how the other Americans at that Oval Office meeting felt on hearing the president speak this way of Comey and suggest that the investigation had been taken care of by removing him. They must have known even as Trump reportedly added, I am not under investigation that he was all but ensuring he would be under investigation and that everyone present had just become a witness.
After news broke of Trumps gift to the Russian diplomats, the present national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, told the press that he had attended the meeting and that it is wholly appropriate for the president to share whatever information he thinks is to the advancement of the security of the American people. He was entirely right if you took appropriate in this context to mean within the letter of the law..
But McMaster gave the impression that the entire meeting was appropriate in the larger sense of being proper. And it was not even close to being proper for Trump to have spoken about Comey in these terms to anybody, particularly to senior representatives of an adversary that is presently under investigation for its successful effort to put Trump in the very office where he now stood.
With regards to Russian intelligence, not much has changed since that day in 1953 when a Brooklyn man who proved to be a Russian agent mistakenly paid a 14-year-old newsboy with a hollow nickel that contained a coded message on microfilm. The newsboy told the teenaged daughter of a cop, who then told an FBI agent. The bureau used basic surveillance to roll up an entire ring of Russian agents, including the one featured in the movies The FBI Story and Bridge of Spies.
Just because Trumps mentor Roy Cohn made a name for himself in the 1950s as Sen. Joseph McCarthys sidekick in a witch-hunt that smeared decent Americans as communist subversives does not mean the Russians were anything but an adversary. McCarthy and Cohn destroyed the noted scholar and college professor Owen Lattimore by falsely accusing him of being the top Russian espionage agent in the United States. But there were and are actual Russian agents. Cohns protge, Trump, is now insisting that an effort to investigate a real Russian plot is a witch hunt.
Trump has suggested that providing Russia with the sensitive intelligence at the Oval Office meeting was another example of his masterful exercise of the Art of the Deal, that he was seeking to enlist the Russians in a more energetic effort against ISIS. He will likely say that his comments about Comey were part of that effort.
Maybe McMaster has apparently convinced himself that this is true, just as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein seems to have convinced himself that the memo he wrote about Comey did not make him party to a put-up. The Art of the Deal as it is actually practiced seems to include getting decent people to hedge on their sense of right and wrong.
Rosenstein may have been seeking a kind of redemption in appointing former FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russian meddling in the Trump campaign. Muellers integrity is so beyond question that he was not disqualified by his closeness to Comey. Nobody is more capable than Mueller of bringing us to the truth.
Meanwhile, the Russian foreign minister has continued his duties, which include propping up the Assad regime in Syria, the Kim Jong Un regime in North Korea and a government in Iran that has supplied insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq with specialized explosives that have killed more than 500 of our finest Americans. Iran has also sworn to destroy Israel, which reportedly provided the information Trump had then given to the Russians.
Trump is visiting Israel after his stop in Saudi Arabia on his first international journey as president. He will continue on to Italy and the Vatican. He will then return to America, where Mueller is commencing his investigation and where the SSG continues to follow Russians of significance because Russia remains an adversary.

Septerra Core: Entering the Kingdom
An excerpt fanfic sequel to Septerra core I’v been working on. I loved that game, the world, the story, but hated that it ended on a cliffhanger. So here’s my attempt to follow up on that. I’ll post the link to the full story when I set it up
It was a day that would be forever known on Septerra as ‘The Day of Miracles.’ When the world was on the verge of destruction, the Creator judged Septerra worthy to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The shells of the world were brought together on the surface, new world appeared in the sky, and an angel of the creator informed the world that, these worlds have gone through a similar trial, and the creator had judged them worthy as well. And that one day, the people of Septerra would travel to those worlds, and would find the cultural exchange and new knowledge more valuable than mythical power or treasure.
Thirty years have passed since then.
Its finally time. Thought Led. She sat in a meeting room in the Ankaran capital, surrounded by representatives of every major power in Ankara. 30 years had been building up to this. She began to speak:
“Ever since the day of miracles. my husband Grubb and I have been working on fulfilling the promise of that day, of making travel to other worlds a reality. Ever since I was elected president of Ankara I’ve been pouring money into hiring engineers and researchers to make this happen, and we have done it. We have the technology to make the journey. And I want to bring representatives from every major power in Septerra to act as diplomats and explorers with me.”
“Are you sure about this?” one of the people seated around the table, a man in his 30’s wearing an outfit that was well made and probably expensive, but was also distinctly ‘junker’ in its design. “Can you really make it all the way to those other worlds?”
“Nothing is certain” Led responded. “We know we can reach those planets with probes, because we’ve done it. And the ship we created to make the journey should be more than capable of sustaining us for the journey.” She took a breath “and on another note: I think we should all introduce ourselves.”
“Aw come on, you know me Led,” the man responded, “even if it has been years since we’ve seen each other.”
“I do, Tori, but not everyone here does.”
“Alright, names Tori, mayor of Oasis”
Led giggled, “They elected you mayor? After all the crap you pulled”
“Hey,” Tori said slightly indignantly, “It was my thinking that saved Oasis from economic depression. I’m not the same person from all those years ago. And I never would have expected you would get elected President of Ankara.”
“Yea I guess we’ll just have to leave it at that.” Led said, not wanting to get into an argument now. She turned to a 30-something girl with red hair and a robotic arm “Why dont you introduce yourself.”
“Names Ara.” She said “Aryam sent me as a representative of New Jinam”
“So you’re an ambassador from New Jinam?”asked Led
“I’m just a mercenary” Ara replied
“Dont tell me we’re letting one of Big Boss’s mercenary dogs on this mission with us!” The outburst came from a man in his late 20s on the other side of the table. His wore the grey-and purple outfit typical of The Chosen, one of a group of Marduk’s followers who had traveled to what was then the top shell of Septerra, and developed some of the most advanced technology on the planet. And his facial tattoos marked him as a Chosen lord.
“Aryam hates that name you know. Besides who are you to talk? I know for a fact you Chosen have employed New Jinam mercs many times to settle disputes between your petty lords.”
“I’ll have you know I’m Maricus, Emperor of the Chosen. And I dont see why that ‘mercenary nation’ Aryam created deserves to be part of such a momentous occasion.”
“Because,” led interrupted “like it or not, New Jinam is a major power in Septerra. Plus, you are too young to remember, but it used to the pirates and bounty hunters were absolute terrors. It almost impossible to travel without risk of attack, and you visited the World Bazaar at your own risk. Aryam has given them a code, and reigned in their excesses.”
“Exactly” Ara said, and then clearly trying to change the subject “Anyway who’s the big blue freak?” Motioning towards a large, blue humanoid with an oval head, and no eyes standing in the corner.
“Not freak” he said “name’s Badu of the Underlost”
“Badu?!” Led exclaimed “I havent seen you in so long! I’m glad to see you are learning our language”
“No,” the Underlost replied “That Badu my father. Oldest son take father’s name. That is Underlost way”
The Underlost lived on what had previously been the bottom shell of Septerra. As such they were adapted to live in a dark environment. They had no eyes and relied on sonar to see.
“Underlost huh?” Ara said “I knew a few guys who were hired to fight your kind”
“You are reason many Underlost hate outsiders.” Badu said
“Hey, its just a job, done be mad because some assholes are willing to pay for bad behavior.” Ara said “Besides, I never dealt with Underlost myself, just heard stories”
Badu looked like he was about to say something, but Led interrupted. “Look, if we’re going to go on this mission, we’re going to need to work together. So if this is gonna be a problem…”
“It won’t” Ara said. Badu said nothing.
“So, what about you?” Led said to a blue-haired woman who couldnt be more than 18 or 19, and yet was wearing the uniform of one of Wind City’s Holy Guard. “I assume you are coming as a representative of Wind City?”
“Yes, my name is Lorel”
“Lorel?!” Led said surprised “You’re Maya and Corgan’s daughter! I havent seen you since you were a baby. And now here you are all grown up and joined The Guard.”
“Yes,” Lorel said “I just joined. Everyone thinks I only got in because of my parents. And thats why I volunteered for this, to prove them wrong.”
“You sound resentful of your parents” Led remarked
“Well, no” Lorel said, “Its not that. They were, are, great parents. Its just that...they are practically living legends. I feel like I could never measure up, like I’ll always be living in their shadow”
“I know how that is” Ara said quietly.
“What?” Lorel said
“Nothing...its personal” said Ara
“Okay that just leaves...wasnt there supposed to be a representative of The Watchers.”
“I am right here Led” a female voice emanated from a gold robotic body in the corner.
“Is that you Layla?” Led asked. Layla was the former commander of the Holy Guard. She had been killed fighting the Chosen, but the Watchers had resurrected her as one of them. Since then she had served as advisor to the government and people of Wind City, as well as an emissary between the watchers and the rest of Septerra.
“It is.”
“What happened to your giant bird body?”
“I will be away from the Watchers for the first time since I died. So it was decided that I should have a body with greater mobility and armements.”
“Alright,” Led said, “now that we’ve all met, and know why were here, is everybody in?”
Everyone present mummered in agreement.
“Great,” Led said, “theres just one more thing” She motioned towards the Jinam cyborg that had been standing next to her this whole time “This is Lobo. He’s going to be the one in charge of piloting the ship.”
“This mission may have been Led’s idea,” Lobo said, “but while you’re on my ship, I’m the one in command”
“You’ll all have 3 weeks to get your affairs in order,” Led said, “thats when we launch.”
