The Owl House Is A Bit of A Mixed Bag When It Comes To Ships
The Owl House is a show that I love a lot, but when it comes to relationships I have some mixed feelings. Now, I don't hate ships in TOH but I do have some issues with them.
The Good
First let's start of with the good; one of the things I like about how TOH handles its ships is how they don't overtake the plot or anything, which is a pretty easy trap that any show with romance can fall into (looking at you Star vs). There's also no bullshit romance drama in the show (the closest thing we get to that is Luz not opening up in S2 EP11 and EP14 but that was about it and its also executed in a way that's not absolutely insufferable).
Lumity is also the show's best relationship; it's gradually built up over the course of season 1 and the first half of season 2 and they are legitimately pretty cute together. Ships like Veesha and Aladraius are also pretty neat. So now let's get into...
The Problems
NOTE: Any issues I have with TOH's ships are most likely due to the shortening, so take my critiques with a grain of salt. Also there will be some criticism levidied towards Huntlow and Reada, if you don't like that don't read the rest of this post.
I think my issues with TOH's ships have to come with the ship's themselves, mainly Raeda and Huntlow. Lumity is good as I already said but the other two have a few issues. First I'ma talk about Huntlow; I don't hate Huntlow as a ship, It's OK, I just think it could have been done a bit better.
The ship mainly suffers from being less developed than Lumity, as Willow and Hunter don't really have that much-developed chemistry with each other. There is one interesting thing about the ship though, that being how they are both young witchlings that were shunned for not being born strong and called a "half-a-witch". That is an interesting parallel, but I don't really think the show develops they're relationship beyond that. The ship is just kinda underdeveloped which is my main problem with it, they're relationship just isn't that fleshed out to me, and as a result, it feels a little bit rushed.
I WILL say though, the moment they had in FTF is cute, it's neat harmless little fan service that doesn't take away from the plot or characters, which is nice.
But overall Huntlow isn't terrible but I have my fair share of issues with it. I honestly feel like this ship has more developed chemistry in fan works than in canon. Like, seriously, Willow and Hunter are incredibly cute together in a lot of Huntlow fan works more than in the actual show.
Anyways, now let's get into...Raeda. I've already talked about this ship before and why I personally don't care for it so I won't go too in depth here, but Raeda to me just suffers from how Raine, as a character, is heavily defined by Eda, and they don't have much depth outside of that. If Raine as a character had more independence from Eda I would have liked this ship a lot more, but they don't.
Again, my issues of Huntlow and Raeda are purely there because of the shortening. If the show wasn't shortened than Huntlow would've definitely been more developed, and Raine would have been a better character with more actual development beyond "Eda's ex".
Conclusion
So ya, that's my thoughts on TOH ships. The shipping in the show isn't bad but I think it could've been better, though again, it's worth mentioning the show got shortened so these problems aren't necessarily its fault, buuuuuut my points still stand. So....bye.
#toh critical#toh criticism#toh#the owl house#toh analysis#not tagging this anti huntlow because I really don't hate the ship#I just think it's ok#anti raeda#also you are perfectly allowed to ship whatever you want#I'm just experssing my opinions on TOH's ships

Oh goodness lets goooo!
20 Questions for Fic Writers
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
13 is my current count!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
370,465 words so far. Getting up there.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I started out with XS but my first fanfics on aO3 were for the Legion of Superheroes/Supergirl Fandom. Most of my fanfics now are The Owl House.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Let Me Be Your Wings (I Defied Death for this?) (275)
A Treason of Thorns (258)
Tower To The Stars: FtF AU (116)
And Slowly I'm Recovering (96)
The Verse of Change (52)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to everyone though but I have to think over my responses besides 'oh my gosh thank you for reading I am glad you liked it oh my gosh'. People are too kind when they comment on my stuff.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oh... hm. Probably The Curses of Time. Remind me to rewrite it sometime ehehe.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Hmmm... Probably going to be Here's A Safe Place once I actually end it.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really? I am not that well known so I don't get much attention in the first place. I do get comments on typos from time to time but I appreciate that though.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No. I don't really like smut so I don't write it.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Oh I have thought about it. I have written some Supergirl/Legion of Superheroes stuff but I don't consider those proper crossovers. I have played around with thoughts of making BG3/TOH crossover fics (ones where the Hexsquad are stuck into the roles of heroes in the realms) and a She-Ra crossover fic inspired by a deleted fic 'Hunter and the Princesses of Power' but I don't know if I will ever do that.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Short of... kind of? But its kind of a complicated story to tell. I guess you could say that Here's A Safe Place is a co-written ship (or at the very least heavily inspired) by my two friends who's OCs I am writing in the fic. (love ya soren and nero <3)
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Oh Huntlow/Winter for sure. I just to be a big Hardlight (Supergirl/Brainiac 5) fan but not so much anymore.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Oh... I have a couple. Right now it seems like The Verse of Change is going to be hard to finish. That and a old Supergirl fanfic (Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes in: Anti-Life).
I lost motivation to write that one a long time ago.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Um... I like writing characters. I think I get personalities down pretty well. At least I hope. I also think I am okay with setting up things?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Oh fight scenes for sure, especially big ones. That and actually finishing a fic. A Treason of Thorns is the first TOH fanfic I've finished and I only did that cause I had an ending very much in mind. I suck at plotting things out.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I don't mind it and though I try not to use it too much (especially because I don't any other languages besides English) cause I can barely write my own most of the time. I usually just use simple statements and leave translations at the end of the chapter.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Shaman King.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Oh... right now it's Here's A Safe Place. My beloved Human AU. My precious babies Thorn, Asp, Gabriel, Eden... aklsdsjskskjs I love found families so bad.
Let's tag... I do not know.
20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for the tag @marimbles! ♥️ No pressure tags: @litfeathers @lollytea @ashanimus @greyhavenisback @princecharmingwinks @tails89 @nutellarghh @ash-mcj @childlikegoblinqueen @daydreams-and-honeybees @avatarmerida @asarcasticwitch @sailahina @secretly-of-course @sapphic--kiwi @haystarlight @zyrafowe-sny @peachytea04 @slightecho
1. How many works do you have on AO3? just hit 100 last month!
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 479,814
3. What fandoms do you write for? I've dabbled in quite a few over the years, but the ones I've written the most fics for are doctor who (eleven/amy) teen wolf (sterek) and the owl house (huntlow)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Error 404: Brain Cell Not Found (teen wolf | sterek) You Always Want What You're Running From (sleepy hollow | ichabbie) What To Do When Your Emotionally Constipated Werewolf Boyfriend Gets Cursed By A Witch: A Guide (teen wolf | sterek) Gold Rush (the owl house | huntlow) Lovesick (the owl house | huntlow) 5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I do! Every kind comment means so much to me, so I always take the time to respond to all of them (though I'm not always great at getting to them on time.)
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmm probably The Courtesan and the Writer (doctor who | eleven/amy) I used to dabble in angst a bit more when I first started writing fic, but these days all my fics are pretty much guaranteed to have a happy ending, because real life is hard enough lol
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Pretty much all my fics have happy endings, but one of the happiest I wrote would probably be my huntlow college AU Until You Meet Someone Who Makes The Fall Feel Like Flying
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I wouldn't call it outright hate, but I have gotten a handful of rude comments over the years (complaining that I don't post often enough, telling me my headcanons are wrong, telling me how they think my story should have ended — one time someone yelled at me in all caps because I said that a character chilled red wine lol that one was wild)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do! Smut is fun. Mine is typically more focused on the emotional aspect than the physical, is usually the result of a long tension-fueled slow burn buildup, and is usually tooth-rottingly fluffy, soft, and sweet.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have! Back in the days where superwholock plagued tumblr, I wrote one of the silliest cross-overs imaginable, combining doctor who, torchwood, bbc sherlock, supernatural, the avengers, and sleepy hollow: Lords, Gods, and Madmen
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yup 🙃
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have! But most of them never saw the light of day 😂 one that did is called An Eggcellent Morning For Cooking Lessons co-written with @ash-mcj @tails89 and @nutellarghh
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
I think my top three ships are reflected in who I've written the most fic for: huntlow, sterek, and the eleventh doctor/amy pond
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Luckily, everything that's posted to AO3 is finished, but at this point I'm thinking I'll probably never get around to writing the little nightmares, reylo, and captain swan WIPs I've had sitting in my drafts since 2019
16. What are your writing strengths?
I've been told I capture the characters really well, which means a lot to me. I've also been told that my writing is cozy and comforting and fills people with warm fuzzy feelings, which is always nice to hear 🥰
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I will sit there and agonize over the same paragraph trying to make it sound perfect instead of just letting the writing flow, so sometimes a fic will be in the works for a very long time until it's finally ready to be posted (by which time I'm probably sick of it and never want to look at it again 😂)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've dabbled in this a little bit, but it's usually been plot-relevant, like a character learning to speak the language (i.e. when Hunter tried to learn Spanish in Being Human.) When I do write in another language, I always do my best to research and try to get the translations as accurate as possible, and I always include the English translation either in the fic itself or as an author's note so readers don't have to break away from my fic to google anything. (And also so that they know what my intention was, on the off-chance I translated something wrong and accidentally wrote something offensive.) 19. First fandom you wrote for?
Does anyone remember that vampire show that came out back in like 2009? Moonlight? Yeah, that one lol
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? God, that's like asking me to pick my favorite child. Okay fine, it's Until You Meet Someone Who Makes The Fall Feel Like Flying

Saw your huntlow post and just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! The way a certain portion of the fandom has been treating the ship has been a mixture of hilarious and frustrating to me (Though not surprising. Just look at the stranger things fandom) I’m not plus size or a person of colour but I’ve noticed that behaviour and similar patterns in so many other fandoms it’s honestly kinda concerning. There’s a lot to unpack about why the fandom is rejecting the ship but you definitely covered a fair amount of it. Again just wanted to say thank you for expressing coherently what I have noticed no just in the owl House fandom but multiple fandoms 👍
Hey anon, I'm glad my post was able to put your own thoughts into words coherently. I've been noticing a lot of white favoritsm from the toh fandom since day one and I've been calling it out on this blog a lot too, I think it's even gotten me blocked by some big wigs in this fandom. It's not exactly a surprise to me that Willow and Gus basically disappeared from the fandoms content the second Amity, Hunter, and the Blight twins showed up, but I wish they'd be more self aware about what they're doing, like they've gotta know they're not being original when they focus on the white side characters in the show. And it's just so annoying that if all your interaction with the show comes from what you see from the fandom you wouldn't even know Luz is the main character or who Willow and Gus even are, I once had someone tell me they didn't even know Luz was the main character because the fandom content made them think she was the love interest and Amity was the main character. They literally told me they hadn't been wanting to watch the show because of that too and once I told them it was Luz's show not Amity's they were gonna watch it. I just wish it wasn't so predictable, that it wasn't such a cliche and that anytime there's a ship with a woc the ship's supporters didn't also have to act as the character's protection squad. I've had many many interracial ships between a white guy and a woc and every time I have to sift through all of the racist bullshit in the ship tag just to get the content I want to see, I just wish I could exist in fandom spaces with the same ease as these stans that create gay crack ships between cute skinny white boys. Like it's so interesting to me how everybody was so perfectly happy to put poor traumatized little Hunter into romantic relationships and scenarios with the pretty and popular (and white) Blight twins, but when the show itself decided to make Willow his potential love interest instead the whole fandom decided that they would rather Hunter stay single and that he's too traumatized to be ready for a romantic relationship and yatta yatta yatta it's just all a bunch of cover for the fact that they're mad they're ship isn't gonna be canon and that their favorite little white boy poor little meow meow is interested in a fat woc instead of the other cute mischief white boy they wanted him to be into instead.
Can you tell I'm a bitter bitch who's been stuck in fandom spaces for many years and has been burned over and over again by racists in my ship tags yet?
I just don't get why people can't keep their mouths shut and not post their anti shit in the ship tag, like bitch I promise everyone in this ship tag has heard your dumb arguments over and over again we don't come into this tag to see your hate, we come into this tag to see our ship just like everybody else. So to the Huntlow antis shut the fuck up and if you absolutely must post your ship hate keep it out of the goddamn tag, I promise you its super duper easy to type #anti-huntlow it's just as easy as typing #huntlow I swear, it really won't cost you too much time, but you didn't wanna do that, you wanted the attention from the shippers, you wanted to make them upset, you purposefully did this because you wanted to. I've seen antis in the tag be like "if you don't like my post or your upset im being an anti in the tag you can just scroll past" and it's like bitch you coulda just done that too, you could have stayed the fuck out of the tag you know is going to be populated with people who don't agree with you, like you're the one coming into the business meeting with big shoes and a red nose on and asking everyone in suits to act like you aren't a clown, shut up and get out of our tag, if you don't like the ship well then it's not for you bitch. Anyways here are my final thoughts on the Huntlow antis
#ignore me#anon#anonymous#i said i wasnt gonna tag this at first but im in my bitter hours rn so im actually gonna tag this#huntlow#tw swearing

I literally get so miffed with the huntlow antis in the tags, because they seem to constantly want to justify their dislike. Maybe its because I usually ship more crack ships, so I'm not used to seeing too much hate in my ship tags, but there are so many posts about 'I don't hate huntlow, buuut…' and then have this long post about why they hate it.
Like, if you don't like the ship, or you prefer something else, that's cool. You don't need to put your damn thesis in our tag.
The ship itself is pretty wholesome and all I find on it are people posting their art and gushing about it. I'm sure we have our bad apples but its hardly a toxic fandom. I feel like the only things anti's seem to complain about is the fact that its popular and the shippers get excited over crumbs in the show. But like, just block the huntlow tag???if you don’t want to see it???
Ive been in fandoms where I have disliked the more popular pairing while shipping the less popular one, and it can be frustrating to see the ship you dislike everywhere while seeing very little love for the ship youre invested in. I get that it can be cathartic to vent about a ship you dislike, or read someone else's venting. But it costs zero dollars to tag your anti posts.
Sorry about the long rant, Your art is super cute btw!
Honestly, just in general if you have to write "I don't hate this ship, but..." then you just. Shouldn't talk about it. Or at least tag correctly and censor the ship so it doesn't end up in the tag??? It is SO easy to do. Also like???? When it comes to ships that there are zero problems with, I don't see a reason why someone needs to go so out of their way to make so many posts about WHY they feel the way they do?? I don't personally care for gold////ric, but I haven't made a single post bashing the ship. If you ship it then like. Whatever. I don't care. It has absolutely nothing to do with me and if you wanna take your crumbs and run wild with them, go nuts! So to see someone get so heated over huntlow just completely blows my mind. It's not even the fact that it's hated because it's getting more popular is whats getting to me. Cause, like, whatever. Popular ships will get disliked and there's really nothing you can do there. It's the fact that it's such a totally wholesome ship with nothing wrong with it, and yet SO MANY PEOPLE keep trying to pull problem after problem out of their asses about it. Or they keep being like "how DARE you ship them when they are *insert THEIR OWN GOD DAMN HEADCANON*". Like, dude, that's a personal problem.
And this is why I'm constantly like "if you don't like huntlow just cause you don't like it, that's fine" because I genuinely feel that way. You just don't vibe with huntlow? It doesn't align with your own headcanon and so you just don't see it? Chill, whatever. Just don't come picking fights with those of us who DO ship it because of your own feelings.
Like just. Be respectful. That's literally all we want in the end is respect. I do not understand why so many people feel so strongly against this ship and like literally whatever. Your feelings are your feelings, but if you're gonna air out those feelings then the VERY LEAST you can do is keep them out of our spaces. Please and thank you.
ALSO thank you so much for sending in this rant!! You are ALWAYS welcome to rant in my inbox!!!! And thank you for the compliment <33333

[There are 2 questions]
I will say the first question seems kinda ranty it wasn't really supposed to but reading back on it makes it seem so.
===
What is one of your least favorite thing from fandoms
Just like general stuff
Not a specific fandom
Like for example I really don't like people who don't tag negativity
I understand that people can tag whatever they want but if you are going to shit on a show for example and are going to main tag it then you should at least tag anti/negativity [Insert Show]
Same thing with ships. Going to main tag it then you should tag anti [ship]
It is just feels like those people want people to send hate to their ask box's to justify their hatred .
(Not even getting into the fact that people do and feed this crap)
====
Now a positive thing that general fandom does that you like
I love scrolling through the tags on random posts and seeing people just being nice.
Just lots of people being like art/writing is amazing and other crap like that
I just love that it shows that you may run into a a-hole but here are multiple people just being nice to be nice
Well, I kinda forgot that that was a thing that happened, but I hate shipping wars so much. They make me incredibly anxious, especially because people tend to get really really toxic on every side.
Got reminded they were a thing now that I'm in the TOH fandom as well because of the whole Huntlow thing.
It's just, I don't know. Everyone's an asshole and it's over fictional characters and thinking those fictional characters would or wouldn't be cute together. It's dumb.
As for a positive thing, I absolutely love how excited people get about the things they like. Be it by writing long-ass meta posts about it, making theories, drawing art or writing fanfiction. Whenever the passion shines through I love it.
And this isn't even just a fandom thing. I love when people tell me about things they're passionate about in general. It's like a burst of serotonin for me as well.
