I'm rereading O Human Star and knowing the entire plot really makes an experience reading the part in chapter 3 when Al is giving Sulla advice on how to pass. It's advice borne from lived experience,,, but living that way was probably a not insignificant contributor to Al's organs eating themselves and putting his flesh-mech in the ground at age 40
