we Fully Converted To Proshipism (/j) in about 2018-19, so i saw how bad it was getting right before covid and honestly its never fully recovered. fandom hasnt really been peaceful since... maybe before 2016? i dont know, i wasnt there. flaming and ship wars have always been around but i honestly cant think of when all this "pro v anti" stuff started. seems like it was a slow buildup and now its just fucking everywhere.

i think the current state of shipcourse is caused, in part, by the fact that younger generations are getting into fandom. except, i think every time someone points this out, they get it wrong and pin it on some bullshit like "younger fans are mistaking fandom for activism/politics!" that argument sucks because that doesnt afford any empathy to the teenagers and young adults who grew up in this awful fucking political climate (including myself.) fandom IS politics to young people, because they have been aware of the state of the world since the time they could read and dont know a world that isnt inherently political in every way.

and then that brings up the misconception that fandom isnt / should never be political, which isnt true and is literally just denial of what is already happening. every form of media and consumption is inherently political. proshippers tend to be wrong about that, plug their ears and lalala until it goes away while ignoring the very political parts of fandom-- like the misogyny, racism, ableism, aphobia... etc.

and so we get stuck in the same song and dance because everyone is wrong and parrots the same disinfo. fandom is very black and white like that. its either everything is ok, or none of it is, with no room for nuance. like for instance: you can enjoy shipping the canonically-aroace character with someone and that doesnt make you a bad person, but dont pretend that doesnt have any real world implications. and so on.

sorry to bother you but I'm confused, your DNI has both pro and anti shippers in it so I'm not sure what you mean by that? I figure maybe it's because you're using a different definition of those words or something? Proship means fiction is harmless and actions people take are unrelated/their own responsibility/fault so anything can be portrayed in any way as long as it's fictional, antiship means harmful things shouldn't be portrayed in a positive light on fiction because it will bleed into reality via subconsciousness of readers and lead to bad actions. They're stances on censorship and how the human brain responds to fiction. They're not wether or not you personally ship problematic things or something. Excluding both of them leaves...no one, because both veiws on fiction are outlawed. Knowing this, that line in the DNI is confusing for me because I don't know wether or not I can interact at all, and also it just doesn't make sense. So, yes in my DNI I have Pro/Com shippers (which I'm loosely using interchangeably since one definition is "it's okay it's not real" and the other is "it's okay" period) and antishippers which as you stated is being against showing serious/harmful topics in media on a positive light

The biggest reason I have Antishipping in there was mostly because my definition of it was more towards people who were against shipping in fandom spaces because I'm a big multishipper and I didn't want someone coming onto my page and bashing me for that, just as a way to keep me safe and not have to deal with that kind of drama

You don’t have to publish this ask, but: remember when you said the pro/anti ship thing was complicated? You’re not wrong, but here’s the thing: most ppl that identify as “pro-ship” exclusively mean that fiction NEVER affects reality (ableist for ppl like me whose delusions can be affected by fiction), and that child-adult or incest relationships are therefore ok because it isnt real (ignoring the fact that BY LAW it is illegal to have even fictitious or drawn instances of csem)

The only “anti”’s I’ve met have been for critically engaging with media, and recognizing that depiction is not automatically glorification, but that it can be, and telling the difference is important. There is nuance in fiction, and it’s important to learn it.

And the pro-ship community recently compared the banning of Maus to “puritan censorship” (and directly to a Jew as well) so, I would be EXTREMELY careful. Part of what makes it so predatory is they are VERY adept at making themselves sound harmless and even good.

Everything in this project has meaning. Everything. I would stay up til the early hours of the morning just thinking and trying to tell my story while correlating it with symbols and clues. The words above them show what they gave and introduced me to. Love, lust, and lorn. All of these things are apart of life. The three emotions we all are controlled by in life. The three things that can break us from ourselves. That’s why the skull is there. After all those things I had to endure I felt nothing but dead inside. On the outside it was visible too. From the days my mother would ask me what’s wrong to the days I would break down at school. It was visible. I seemed dead on the inside. They say nothing is as dry as the bone, but I found a way to push through. My rebirth allowed me to show the world I am still here. After my battles with love a rose grew, after my battles with lust a rose grew, and even after being beat down and almost held away from the light that helped me grow, a rose grew from lorn. I am still recovering from these three things. The roses vary in stages because of this. Lorn was the most impactful on me hence why the rose is the smallest of the three. It is taking time to heal from these things, but I am reborn. Three things that have claimed my last three years.
