bestie thank you for asking me!! (i know this is like a month old, it made me happy knowing it was here and i wanted to take time to answer lol)

i was thinking about this a lot yesterday as I wrote my first fic because i kept laughing, thinking "of course this is what I write about" given my own personal attachment to jewelry. in fact, the song I titled the fic after ("Mine" by Phoebe Ryan) kind of speaks to why I love jewelry so much.

the main point of it is that all my day-to-day jewelry is symbolic! in some ways, it started because I always loved the idea of tattoos, but I'm pretty indecisive to begin with (and my grandparents don't like tattoos, which doesn't mean I won't ever get a tattoo but there was never a tattoo I felt strongly about getting right this moment). I really liked the idea of having tangible reminders of things so I could look at my rings or bracelets or put my hand over my necklace and be reminded of whatever the jewelry was symbolizing. it also has some significance to how I've grown and changed over time.

I mostly have rings and necklaces, which I've been wearing since high school. My bracelets are kind of the key to this story because of the fact that I never wore bracelets until I got a specific bracelet in 2018, but after I got that one bracelet, I have never gone without them since.

Basically, I had a very hard goodbye in 2018, and I wanted to get a piece of jewelry to remind me of that person. I usually would go with a necklace, but I didn't want to have to choose between my new necklace and other symbolic necklaces I have. That's how I decided on a bracelet. Since I never wore any bracelets, I'd never have to choose. I now have 5 bracelets that I never take off (and it's fluctuated in the years since 2018, I think the most I've had at once that are constantly on my wrist is 8?). So it felt symbolic not only because of it being a bracelet, but because there are people that came into my life since then that are very important to me and have never known me without my bracelets, yet the person who is the reason I wear bracelets never knew me as someone who wore bracelets (and I think in my head it became more symbolic because it wasn't gradual, either). So. Here are a million pics! There are fandom ones at the end that are fun (I think)

bracelets

[left] the bracelet that started it all. it has gone through many iterations, mostly to the one on the right so that I could start adding more bracelets. [right] on the right there's also pearl and tanzanite (tanzanite is my favorite), a bracelet that says "hang in there" with a semicolon (an inside joke with someone important to me, and I used to be a gymnast so the irony of "hang in there" on a bar bracelet made me smile), and the butterfly one is from my younger sister.

[left] the colorful bracelet is from my best friend. it's rose gold, so I put it on my right hand and started getting more rose gold/mixed rose gold and gold jewelry. the North Star was part of a gift (I gave someone a matching one) and is an homage to If/Then: "you're my North Star, my map to grace." [middle] I have a ton of morse code jewelry now because then I could put names or phrases without people asking me about it. some phrases/names I have: Amber, Bernadette, I will if you will, everything changes, even now. the heart is a handwritten piece of jewelry. [right] this one shows my garden bracelet! The Language of Flowers is my favorite book, so I use my favorite flower dictionaries to choose flowers based on meaning, which is why I have a lot of flower jewelry. The bracelet has peony, snowdrop, poppy, daisy, and baby's breath.

[left] new bracelets are a cremation bracelet with some of my grandmother's ashes and one with stones representing the asexual pride flag. [right] I gave a matching "E" bracelet to a client a few years ago when we said goodbye and I read The Invisible String. The bottom is a variation of a morse code bracelet.

[left] tanzanite with oak leaves! tanzanite is my favorite but can also be a december birthstone. one of the meanings of my focal child's name (a baby I became really close with when I did my case study for my minor) is strength, which is the meaning of oak leaves. [middle] my current therapist's name is Amber. [right] it's hard to tell, but the stone is pink! I got it when I graduated undergrad because it meant saying goodbye to the Pink Room (infant classroom where I worked).

4. What part of this piece was the most difficult to draw?

It's exactly what you might expect: Frodo's left arm (the one holding the phone) in the last panel definitely gave me some trouble. I was trying to find a pose that both a) looked natural and b) made Frodo's tattoo visible; you can actually see how many lines I drew and erased in the zoomed-in picture in this reblog.

I also had to try multiple different positions and designs for the tattoo before I found one that I liked. In a few early attempts, the tattoo actually went down the length of his arm! But in the end, I'm glad I kept it contained to the wrist.

6. What is your favorite part of this piece?

Oh man, it's so hard to pick! I love all of the modern designs, and I think most of the drawings turned out really well. (Pippin looks a bit wonky, but that's just because I'm not used to drawing people who are upside down.) In the end, I think my favorite part is just the slew of "Benadryl Cabbagepatch" names. That was a HYSTERICAL day on the Fig Tree Server, and I love seeing everyone's creativity and crazy senses of humor coming together like this! X-D

Design Choices

All four of the main hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin) have a bracelet with a Single Bead, indicating they are part of the Core Friend Group

Merry wears dog tags and a watch. I imagine he has served in the military in some capacity, or aspires to do so; and the watch is there because he's the kind of detail-oriented person who's very concerned with being on time.

Sam and Rosie have matching bracelets: his is the sun, and hers is the moon. (Someone pointed out that the little thing hanging off her phone also looks like a sun. This is correct, but the bracelets were supposed to be the matching set.)

Rosie is also the only one of the gang to have a decorative phone case and a PopSocket.

Aragorn's mug says "GONDOR U", and the icon on his laptop is the shards of Narsil. It's kinda hard to see, but he also has a ring on his left hand, indicating that he's either engaged or married to Arwen.

Frodo gets the most Easter eggs. He too has a watch, because he's the sort to at least TRY to be on time; he has the tattoo, reading "worth f;ghting for", as aforementioned; and his shirt is a polo from the company Hang Ten, as indicated by the little feet embroidered on the lapel! I chose that one for two reasons: number one, little feet is Very Hobbity, and number two, they're my dad's favorite brand of polo. (He likes the little feet.)

PHONE DETAILS. Merry, Pippin, and Legolas are the only ones to have Extremely Fancy New Phones with three cameras on the back, because they are rich kids who can afford to have that sort of thing. Gimli is also rich, but his phone only has two cameras because he's not an Instagrammer. Sam and Rosie only have two-camera phones because theirs are cheaper older models. Everyone has phone cases except for Legolas. Gimli's phone case is a Particularly Chunky Heavy-Duty OtterBox. Aragorn is the only one with a laptop because he's Old. And, as aforementioned, Rosie is the only one who has a PopSocket.

Initial Conversation

I did actually plan the chat in the first panel very carefully! If you look at the time stamps beside the messages, you can see how the conversation picks up speed. It starts with Frodo declining some kind of an activity that night, saying he's busy with something else. Pippin responds, asking what he's doing. Frodo replies and sends photographic evidence, calling Bilbo "Beebo". Sam thinks this is very funny and repeats "Beebo". Frodo, encouraged by Sam thinking this is funny, doubles down the joke with "Beebo Bongos". Then Merry jumps in with "Blorbo Bagpipes". By this point, messages are coming in within the same minute, and then the rest of the chaos unfolds. X-D

In 2023 Jieun got a semicolon with a heart design on her left inner wrist. A semicolon represents personal strength to overcome internal struggle. It raises awareness for suicide prevention, depression, addiction, and help stop mental health stigma. A semicolon is a symbol of hope. Jieun had gone through a hard time in 2022 and this was her way of showing that she got through it.

hiii, rough day today, so i wanted to show you guys this tattoo on my wrist under the cut

my brain loves being the example of recovery not being linear, so i got a tattoo of an ekg that kinda symbolizes the ups and downs.

i tacked on the semi-colon on the left because there was a period in my life in which everything was literally on pause because of how much i couldn't function so embracing the semicolon movement really helped me at least want to move forward and have hope that things get better (and it did!)

I have two small tattoos on my left arm! my first tattoo is actually a matching tattoo with a lot of my family (and my mom and I got our tattoos together) that we all decided to get after my uncle’s suicide. it’s a semicolon tattoo, and I personalized mine by having the dot be a half flower.

my second tattoo is a small, simple Saturn! I got it for my great-grandmother. Saturn was her favorite planet, and when I was in high school, we used to spend hours talking about it. I would keep up with all the latest news from the Cassini mission in part to talk to her about it when I’d see her next. it’s my favorite planet because of her :)

recently I’ve been drawing pictures of what I want to look like in 5+ years and !!!! I love this concept of me!!!! I want to be that pretty!!!! it makes me feel like I’m making the right choices, that I’m not faking anything

did I know that I wanted more piercings before drawing those picture? No. But now I know as a fact that I will be getting snake bite and helix piercings (maybe a second lobe too) along with tattoos (two simple wrist tattoos for now, semicolon on the left, heartbeat on the right) because I think they looked so pretty on art-me!! And I’m gonna grow my hair out uber long so that I can look like an elf!!! And I’m gonna dress like a futuristic villain!!!!! I can’t wait !!!!! :DDD

I remember drawing myself when I was 12 and crying because I felt so good being portrayed as non-binary. this kind of feels the same to me. it’s nice to know that, even if I suppressed my feelings for half a decade, I still can draw who I want to be. I can still draw a future that feels good to me.

So it’s been a while since I’ve been here actively, but the last time I was floating around - I was trying to make an effort to be more open (of which I still want t make a post explaining my decision to no longer be 100% stealth over the past year). That’s not this post and instead this post is about my 9 tattoos.

Most of these photos are taken either day of or days after they were done, so that’s why they usually look red or puffy.

#1 Captain America shield (2014) - unfortunately, someone jacked a photo I’d posted on my Tumblr and posted it to Instagram, so I had it briefly go viral against my wishes. Such is life, I’ve moved on.

I strongly ID with Steve Rogers/Captain America. It’s one of my most beloved cosplays, it was the movie I was watching the day I came out to my mum as trans, and I understood what it was like to grapple with everything special about me coming out of a bottle. It was my first tattoo, I got it done in Queens a month before my 25th birthday, and I used a pomade cap to get the sizing perfect.

#2 Elbow “Real Life (Angel)” lyrics script (2015) - the full line is “While I have a breath in me, blood in my veins, you’ll never need fear a thing in this world.” The day after tattoo #1, I saw Elbow in concert for the first time. They had been my favorite band for 3 years at that time and were the soundtrack to my life. When people ask about this, I tell people it’s my semicolon tattoo. The whole song is beautiful, it took me some time to pick the perfect lyric. I got this one done at a local shop near my house.

#3 Sherlock Holmes (2016) - I got this one at Boston Tattoo Convention. I was on site for a tattoo of 12 hours and the rose took 2 hours alone. The quote is from The Red-Headed League and it’s something Sherlock says to Watson. I got it in honor of all of the people in my life who showed up at the exact moment I needed them. My tattoo artist and I worked for 2 months on the concept, which is part of why it’s my favorite. I’ve always been afraid to post it, because I had a number of people on Instagram message me asking for more details so they could “bring it into their artist.” It’s incredibly personal aside from my quick description, so I always think it’s funny when people say they want it.

#4 (pictured at the top of photo 6) Bulletproof Tiger Grand Opening Shop Logo (2016)- this one was free, I went to the grand opening of a local shop. I was the first one to get it tattooed. It has no significance other than the fact I got it to celebrate a 20 pound weight loss at the time and it was also one of the more spontaneous things I’d done. I have no other artwork from this shop at this time, but I’m hoping to change that this year.

#5 “For Good” with a green period (2017) - I got this done as a walk in the day after I saw Wicked at the Boston Opera House. I’d loved Wicked since high school and I went with every single one of my best friends as a late birthday present. The green period is in reference to Elphaba and the font is the typewriter font from Rent, as a dual reference to two of my favorite musicals. I wanted something to mark how much my life changed last year and how I had been changed both for the better and permanently (you know, for good).

#6/#7 Friday the 13th/Vampire Flash (2017) - these were a Friday the 13th/Halloween deal at the same shop I got the For Good tattoo at. I got the Friday the 13th to commemorate the day I signed the lease for my first post-college apartment and I got the vampire because I wanted it. They’re on opposite sides of my left leg, which I’m turning into my flash leg. I like to joke that I got the vampire tattoo because it has a cross, and my late grandfather (who I lost in June 2017) would have hated and loved it equally. It’s not 100% false.

#8/#9 “Alea iacta est” / “Temet nosce” (2018) - I got these twin tattoos to celebrate my 5 years on testosterone. “Alea iacta est” is Latin for “the die is cast” and it’s what Julius Caesar said as he crossed the Rubicon. Over time it’s come to mean “for better or worse, I can’t undo these things I’ve done” and it’s on my right wrist because I am right handed. “Temet nosce” is Latin for “know thyself” - which I think is self explanatory, but it’s on my left wrist because it’s on the same side as my heart. I got them done at the same shop I got my Wicked and flash pieces.

I like to think of them as the start and the end - 5 years ago, I rolled the dice and I spent those 5 years getting to know who I am. They’re also my reminder going forward to keep taking risks and to keep growing because of them.

I will also be the first to admit that I got them on my wrists to discourage impulses toward self harm, which I am still struggling with 15 years later.

I’m not sure what tattoo is next - but I average about 2 tattoo sessions a year now, so once pool/beach season is up I can start planning my next one.

So ; lets get started! 1. The meaning behind my url; Okay, fun story. I once got back from summer break and I was really, really *reeeaaallllyyy* tanned. (Well duh, I had been basking in the French sun for about 2 months) and my classmate friends were pretty shocked XD I’m usually very pale you see. So they thought up an ‘exotic’ nickname for me! My real name is Thané, my first nickname was Thanish, and so it became Thanishua. I like it, so I keep it ^~^

4. Last time I cried and why; Uhmm… earlier this evening cause I was watching this touching bit in this movie… But really ‘cried cried’ ? Uhm… well… Somewhere the week before last week I think. Family issues :'3 Please excuse me that I won’t go in detail ^^’…

5. Piercings I have; Do earrings count? I got one in my left ear and two in my right.

7. Biggest turn off(s); Uhm… I guess someone being too full of themselves and generally rude people or people that treat me as if I’m a marionette. I hate that. Also… it’s amazing how one’s hair can change a look… And Uhm… mind personal hygiene please?

Uhm… since I’m pretty introvert… someone who takes the lead… And someone who’s patient and can put up with my crazy randomness and stubbornness… Also, I can appreciate good jokes.

12. Ideas of a perfect date; Food? For real, almost anywhere can be fun if you’re with the right person. As far as I’m concerned we could just go up on our roof or the couch or just a simple car ride. With the right person and atmosphere anything is possible. There would be no place I’d rather be than with that one special person. 
 13. Life goal(s); No idea… Probably having a stable relationship and a family maybe? Just to be secure and loved. Without too much unnecessary worrying… I know I know… That’s not really exciting now is it :'3… I think it’s cute tho…

Yes. 1. On my right wrist of 2 palm trees with a crescent moon in the corner,because I used to draw my grandpa pictures of beaches with palm trees. And under that picture I would put his birthday and his death date. And behind my right ear I want a music note. And on my left ankle I want a non-filled at heart.
