Windows 11 should be able to take care of everything. It remains to be seen how applications initially planned for touch support will be able to be supported by Microsoft's OS.

WHEN IS WINDOWS 11 RELEASED?

If we are to believe what Microsoft said, a new version of Windows will be released this year. Although the name of the new OS has not been confirmed, it is very likely that it is Windows 11, and not just an update to Windows 10.

For the more impatient, Microsoft obviously wants to release a preview at the end of the conference on June 24, 2021 .

WINDOWS 10 GOING TO DISAPPEAR?

Launched in 2015, Windows 10 could bow out after 10 years of existence.

Here again, it is still a bit early to judge the future of Windows 10 as long as no official announcement has been made. On the other hand, if we stick to Microsoft's usual policy regarding new versions of Windows, Windows 10 is not going to go away anytime soon. Unless there is a final turnaround, the OS still has many long and beautiful years ahead of it. Windows XP for example has been maintained for almost 13 years, while Windows 7 has lasted for 11 years. Even the much-maligned Vista will have lived for almost 11 years too.

Windows 10 arrived in its 6 th year, it is clear that its life cycle is not going to end anytime soon and he still has a few years to live, if that via updates security. This is what the operating system's software support page suggests. Microsoft is indeed talking about a deadline of October 14, 2025 for Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Professional, Windows 10 Professional Education and Windows 10 Professional for Workstations.

HOW MUCH WILL WINDOWS 11 COST?

When Windows 10 was released in 2015, Microsoft "offered" all users of Windows 7 and Windows 8 a license for its new operating system. This offer was only supposed to last for a year, but six later it is still active. We can reasonably hope that the editor of Redmond will repeat the operation with Windows 11: any holder of a license for Windows 8 or Windows 10 (Windows 7 is no longer supported) should be entitled to a free migration to Windows 11 .

As for the newcomers, they will probably have to put their hands in their pockets, knowing that at present, a full Windows 10 license costs between 145 and 259 euros depending on the version . It is likely that a Windows 11 license will show up at similar prices.

Finally, the last avenue to consider: the acquisition of a Windows subscription. A formula that would take on its full meaning with a Windows in the Cloud, the release of which also seems imminent. Recall that Microsoft already offers Office 365 in this format since 2011. If Windows 11 were to be declined in a remote version on the Cloud, it could well be that Microsoft launches such an offer.

How I grew CoSchedule into a $5MM+ SaaS company using this framework

I was half a decade into an agency job I was supposed to love.

On paper, that job was a great fit.

But in reality, there was this problem:

I didn’t fit in.

My work was my art. My coworkers, well, they couldn’t quite say the same – no one really seemed to care about what they were creating. It didn’t take long for my “dream job” to morph into a nine-to-five cage.

My (future) business partner and I were paddling in the same boat at this agency. After a couple beers one night, we decided to change our luck and build something we could run. Of course, we each had families, which meant we couldn’t just ghost on them because we were excited to get a new project off the ground. So every night, from 10pm to 3am, we hopped on a Skype call. Coffee pots sputtering in the background, we built Scriply, our first piece of software.

Today, I’m the cofounder and CEO of CoSchedule.

We’re a SaaS startup with users in 100+ countries around the world. In fewer than 4 years, we went from night-owl jam sessions to 8,000+ customers.

I share this so you know we didn’t go from zeroes across the board to thousands of customers by magic. (Or by dipping into the fat wallets of VC money.)

We bootstrapped this thing like you wouldn’t believe.

When we did our first demos with prospective customers to validate the product, it wasn’t even built yet. In fact, our “product” was a powerpoint deck with a UI and hyperlinks that jumped from one slide to the next.

The growth we’ve experienced hasn’t come by accident; it’s come by doing, shipping, creating, failing, learning… and never stopping.

Hey nerd friends, meet your one metric to rule them all

The 1MTM framework, popularized in Lean Analytics: Use Data to Build a Better Startup Faster by Alistair Croll and Benjamin Yoskovitz, is simply this:

Finding the right metric to relentlessly focus on at the right time that’s appropriate to your stage of growth.

Croll and Yoskovitz describe the 1MTM as “the one number you’re completely focused on above everything else for your current stage.” Fundamentally, you focus relentlessly on what’s most important for your growth right now. Not in 6 months. Not in a year.

When I worked at the agency, it did not operate this way. For clients, we were expected to grow every “important” metric at once. This meant simultaneously:

Increasing social followers on every network

Driving more web traffic

Building a bigger email list

Generating more qualified leads

Getting a better click-through-rates

Lowering cost-per-click

Optimizing conversion rates

Winning at direct mail campaigns

Those are all awesome things. But when everything is a priority, well, nothing is.

As marketers, many of us face the new normal of a 72-hour work week. We’re all tapped for time. So trying to keep every iron white-hot is a recipe for burnout. For me, working like this equaled meager gains in many areas. Instead, we need to focus on sizeable gains in the most important area. That’s why we used the 1MTM framework for growing CoSchedule. It forces you to prioritize ONE metric. If a given campaign, project or activity does not increase your one number to rule them all, don’t do it.

This is, also, how you – as a freelancer, startup founder or growth marketing peep – should view your growth, analytics and goal-setting activities.

Bottom line: your goal metric reflects the stage your team or company is at.

1MTM works because it encourages two things: focus and discipline

Ingredient #1: Focus

1MTM makes you focus with laser-beam intensity on the one thing that matters most right now.

It’s NOT about being myopic. Rather you save yourself from diluting your growth potential by tracking 47 popcorn KPIs, like the myriad of metrics I had to grow during my agency days. When you have one primary metric, your eyes are locked onto your goal AKA the one part of the business you’ve decided to value more highly than any other.

To get CoSchedule off the ground, we needed leads (trial signups, demo requests, etc) so people would actually become customers.

Our focus was to master 2 fundamentals:

Traffic: drive it on demand

Build an audience you have direct access to

In a recent survey of 1,600 pro marketers we conducted, we found that qualified leads are the number one KPI marketers track. In order to grow, you need leads. If you’re getting leads, you need a way to nurture them. As Chet Holmes points out in The Ultimate Sales Machine, only 3% of people are ready to buy right now. You want to keep in contact with the 97% who are in the “not quite yet” stage. Not to mention that nurtured leads make 47% larger purchases than non-nurtured folks.

To nurture those leads, you need direct contact with them.

Which means – *ahem* – email. Such as an email list filling up with folks in the “not quite yet” buying stage.

And, finally, to build your all-important email list, you gotta have traffic to your website. So, you need traffic (to get those leads) and audience building (to grow a relationship with those leads) which are these two fundamentals.

Bringing us full-circle back to our two fundamentals:

Traffic

Build an audience.

Ingredient #2: Discipline

At CoSchedule, we evaluated all projects through the singular lens of our One Metric. You instantly know if a strategy is good or not, depending on how well it serves your one metric.

For us at CoSchedule, asking ourselves, “Will this help us achieve our One Metric?” helped to evaluate new opportunities.

Maybe it will. Or not. Ultimately, focus and discipline allow for the necessary behavioral changes to take place. To achieve substantive growth, both your mindset and methodologies need to change. In Lean Analytics, Alistair Croll and Benjamin Yoskovitz explain:

“. . . if you want to change behavior, your metric must be tied to the behavioral change you want.”

For our purposes, I’ll paraphrase to this: If you want to change results, your metric must be tied to the results you want.

Because of my agency days – and focusing on 45+ KPIs to simultaneously grow – this approach appealed to me. See, it’s not doing more stuff. Instead, it’s focusing on less.

How CoSchedule used the 1MTM framework to grow

Step #1: Get Traffic

At CoSchedule, we had zero pageviews, zero email subscribers and no customers.

When I hired Nathan, our head of demand generation, I told him traffic was the only metric he should care about. In short: his job was to get pageviews.

Imagine you run a retail store and you need foot traffic, right? You need people milling around and looking at your products. To increase sales, you need people dropping by on a regular basis.

For us digital folks, this works exactly the same way. We need people on our sites because they’re our primary salespeople.

Your Step #1 could be one of these traffic-related options:

Search hits

You can’t sell to people who aren’t there. To get more customers, we needed more traffic.

So, we worked our tails off to:

Increase pageload speed which is an official search ranking factor for Google

… Juice up that content with special SEO sauce

While learning to drive more web traffic is a science (and art) to its own, your foundation starts with amazing content. At CoSchedule, we set our focus on creating amazing content to drive traffic. In fact, killer content is so central to our growth and marketing that we boiled down our strategy to three principles:

Find those topics by analyzing your competitors and strategizing a new angle

All of that helped us grow from absolutely zero traffic to 1 million plus pageviews per month (and roughly 400,000 unique visitors).

Ever hear of a marketer named Noah Kagan?

He’s pretty sharp, starts cool things like Sumo and AppSumo and has a lot of people following him around online. Obviously, he can drive traffic with a few tweets and an email.

But what about a guy named Julien Marion? My bet is you probably haven’t heard of him.

Noah helped him build a brand-new website and grow it from zeroes to over 10,000 visitors per month. Without a large following or existing brand, Julien worked an astute plan to get there the old-school way: blood, sweat and clicks.

A 2014 study by VentureBeat found email marketing generates $38 for every $1 invested-catapulting email ROI lightyears ahead of social, paid search, display, and other traditional ad methods. In other words, your emails enjoy about 350% more visibility than organic social messages. And that’s just on a bad hair day.

Our experience proves those stats are true. Email has been the largest contributing factor to our growth by a factor about 300%.

For instance, this 77.54% open rate is part of a campaign nurturing signups to become qualified leads. This campaign – also called a journey in some email marketing circles – averages a 26.1% conversion rate.

So, doing some quick math here: a little more than 1 out of every 4 people who get our weekly email takes the action we’re calling them to. Higher open rates also correlate directly to this stat. The higher our open rates? The more qualified leads we generate. Therefore, the more revenue we drive.

TWO insanely-actionable strategies that helped CoSchedule go from 0 subscribers to 350,000+ in 5 years

Subscriber Strategy #1: Content upgrades

A content upgrade is a companion resource to content like blog posts. They’re also called lead magnets or opt-in bait. Often, they are things like:

Templates

Calculators

Worksheets

Any other document that helps your audience put what you’re teaching them into practice

To use them to build an email list, we gate them behind an email opt-in form. So, your new potential subscriber gets the resource by when they provide their email address.

I know what you’re thinking: “I barely have time to write a blog post, much less create a content upgrade.”

But… what if you just created one fewer post per week and used that time to create a content upgrade? That trade would be worth it, methinks, because your list will grow faster – even though you’re publishing one less piece per week.

Content Upgrade #1 – Give away something you know works (and that you have stats to back up).

If you’re a copywriter, hand over a Word doc or PDF: “Grab these 5 proven formulas to rewrite your headlines for 347% more traffic.”

If you’re a social media strategist, offer some inspiration: “Get 3 all-star Facebook ad examples with CTRs of 63.8%!”

For us at CoSchedule, we focused on Subscriber Strategy #1: Content Upgrades. However, Dropbox is the perfect example of this second Subscriber Strategy.

You’ve heard the story of Dropbox’s meteoric user growth thanks to their early referral program. Whenever a user successfully referred a friend to use Dropbox, each person got 500MB of bonus storage for free.

Luxury options exist in every product category, from clothes to cars. Sometimes you pay more for a custom design, exotic materials or painstaking craftsmanship, and sometimes price is inflated just for a brand name. In the PC world, there are limited components to work with, but manufacturers often try to go all-out with features and construction innovations. Lenovo debuted an intricate and expensive new kind of hinge with the Yoga 3 Pro a few years ago, inspired by metal watchstraps. No other company has anything like it, and it’s still found only on Lenovo’s most expensive models.

The hinge isn’t the only premium touch on the new Yoga 920. It joins a select group of non-gaming laptops that cost around Rs. 1,50,000, and it boasts of high-end design as well as specifications. There’s a lot to like about the Yoga 920 on paper, but for this kind of money, we’re looking for perfection. Here’s our full review.

  Lenovo Yoga 920 Vibes Edition design

At the international launch event, we saw the Yoga 920 in a variety of metallic colours. In India, however, Lenovo is only releasing the Yoga 920 Vibes Edition, which is a special edition with a black patterned cover. Lenovo says that it chose this design from amongst 130 ideas submitted by students at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, Italy. It’s supposed to symbolise dynamism, lightness and simplicity, and we do quite like it. The pattern is subtle yet visually arresting, and because it’s printed on highly reflective glass, it looks like it has depth and movement. The dull silver frame contrasts nicely with the dark surface as well.

Lenovo reserves its watchstrap hinge for its highest-end products, and the Yoga 920 is the latest one. It’s made up of multiple smaller segments, some of which are dull and others highly polished, and definitely stands out against the otherwise minimalistic body. This is a laptop that will make people look twice, and whether that’s a good thing or otherwise is highly subjective.

The Yoga 920 can be folded over backwards and used as a tablet, or propped up in tent mode which is more stable. At 1.37kg, it makes for an unwieldy tablet. You can’t sit back and relax with it in one hand or resting against your knees. When fully folded over, the two halves of the device don’t lie flat against each other, so the upper half tends to dip and bounce back every time you tap with the stylus or a finger. You can see this happen in our video review, embedded above.

Speaking of which, the Yoga 920 Vibes Edition comes with Lenovo’s Active Pen 2 in the box. It needs an AAAA battery, and thankfully one is included, because they’re expensive and hard to find in India. The Active Pen 2 promises 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and works with Windows Ink, which is Microsoft’s framework for stylus compatibility across hardware manufacturers and app developers.

Unlike some other 2-in-1s, the Yoga 920 doesn’t have a slot, loop, or magnetic dock for the stylus. Instead, you get a little plastic bracket that clips into the sole USB 3.0 port, allowing you to keep the Active Pen handy. Other than the obvious downside of blocking the only full-sized USB port on the device, we found this awkward because it’s easier to unplug the bracket than it is to slide the stylus in and out of it, and the positioning isn’t ideal with the Yoga 920 in tablet mode. Rather than being a convenient way to carry the Active Pen 2 around with the Yoga 920, it just becomes an extra thing to worry about losing.

  As a laptop, there’s a lot to like about the Yoga 920. It’s relatively easy to carry around and comfortable to use. The keyboard is large and well spaced, and even the arrow keys aren’t too cramped. The keys are soft and have a satisfactory amount of travel considering how thin the body of this device is. You can choose between two backlight levels, but there’s no automatic adjustment. There’s a little bit of flex in the centre of the keybed, but it didn’t affect our typing speed or accuracy. The trackpad is also quite generously proportioned, there’s even a fingerprint reader that works with Windows Hello for user authentication.

The screen measures 13.9 inches and has a resolution of 3840×2160 (4K) which makes it incredibly sharp. It looks great from all angles, but is highly reflective. The top and side borders are relatively narrow, but there’s a massive chin below the screen. This looked a bit funny to us at first but we forgot all about it after a day or two.

There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left, which means that you get all the benefits of USB Type-C plus file transfers at up to 40Gbps with compatible devices, and DisplayPort video output. Only one of these ports can be used to charge the Yoga 920 with its bundled 65W charger. Standard USB Type-C chargers will also work, but somewhat slower. There’s a 3.5mm combo audio socket on the left, and one standard USB 3.0 Type-A port on the right. There’s no SD card slot. The power button is also on the right so you can get to it in laptop or tablet mode.

Unlike some of its competitors, Lenovo doesn’t include any dongles or adapters in the box. We also would have liked a sleeve or even a microfibre cloth (which could really come in handy).

Because Lenovo is only launching the top-end Vibes Edition in India, there are no options when it comes to hardware – Lenovo thinks that people who are shopping for laptops in this price range are only looking for the best, so this is the top spec. We have Intel’s recently launched 8th Gen Core i7-8550U “Kaby Lake Refresh” processor, with four physical cores and Hyper-Threading. It runs at 1.8GHz when you aren’t doing anything heavy, and can turbo up all the way to 4GHz with one core if necessary to complete tasks quicker.

You get 16GB of RAM and a 512GB PCIe SSD, and we wouldn’t accept anything less at this price. Lenovo uses Intel’s integrated UHD 620 graphics rather than a discrete GPU, which means that there’s very little potential for gaming. The Yoga 920 has JBL speakers and the company’s website alludes to a software update coming in February 2018 that will enable Dolby Atmos enhancement for headphones. There’s also Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1. Lenovo says that the 4-cell Lithium polymer battery will deliver 10.8 hours of battery life because of the 4K screen – the variants with full-HD screens can get up to 15.5 hours, but these aren’t available here.

Lenovo ships this laptop with Windows 10 Home. Because the Yoga 920 has a touchscreen and stylus, Windows automatically spaces out icons and other elements a bit more than usual. The UI scaling is set to 300 percent by default because of the screen’s incredibly high resolution, but we found this to be too high. It effectively gives you the same usable area as a 1280×720-pixel screen, and we were much more comfortable at 200 percent or less.

Shop On SecondCovers

The Windows Ink Workspace is a panel that you can pull up with one tap on a taskbar icon. It gives you quick access to apps that specifically benefit from a stylus, as well as the Windows 10 sticky notes and screenshot annotation features, and Microsoft’s own Sketchpad app. You can do neat things such as draw straight lines against an on-screen ruler, and post your scribbles directly to social media.

There are two Lenovo apps pinned to the taskbar – Lenovo Vantage and Lenovo Settings. The latter guides you through a few setup options before informing you that all its functions have been merged into the Lenovo Vantage app, which makes us wonder why it’s there in the first place. Vantage lets you check for system updates, run diagnostics, check your warranty status, download recommended apps, and manage the webcam, mic, trackpad and power saving features.

  Lenovo Yoga 920 Vibes Edition performance

The Yoga 920 gave us no trouble at all in day-to-day use. It was pleasant to work with, and handled over a dozen browser tabs plus assorted other programs without breaking a sweat. The CPU and amount of RAM are more than enough to make Windows feel snappy and responsive. We were able to hear the fan spin up sometimes, even when we weren’t doing anything particularly stressful.

In benchmark tests, we found that this laptop was quite a solid performer. We got 3,138, 4,644 and 2,869 points in PCMark 8’s Home, Creative and Work scenarios respectively.
