When we look as far back as the 9th era, we have to remember that much of what we consider to be common knowledge is more speculation than anything else. Lady Mary Trevelyan, for example, was one of the most well-known figures in the South for the latter half of the century and yet we have little concrete evidence that she even existed prior to 9:41, with even less being known about the home she grew up in. While there are records of her family spanning several centuries, the waters begin to muddy in the 8th era with the birth of her paternal grandmother. Famously, Dr Thomas Alexan has posited the theory that there was some complicated traumatic event that led to the purging of so many records and the subsequent reclusive nature of the family: a child borne out of wedlock, an affair, a crime of passion. There is, as many have argued, no real evidence of this. Alexan's writings were accused by peers of being all theory and no evidence, "he claims to hear the dragon's roar but can't show me its scales or shit" (Milland, 14:76).

But what do we do when all we have is the dragon's roar? From salvaged records, we are able to determine that the Inquisitor was the youngest of at least four siblings. Her oldest known sister, Jane Trevelyan, was reportedly sent to the Starkhaven Circle as a teenager (c.9:14) though what became of her is unknown. It is likely she either perished or slipped through the cracks after the tower was destroyed in 9:31, given that there is no record of her ever arriving at Kirkwall's notorious Gallows.

We know a little more about Julien Trevelyan, her older brother, due to the Templar order's meticulous bookkeeping. He was stationed at the Ostwick Circle in 9:13 and stayed there without incident for several years before being sent to Kinloch Hold in Ferelden. Unusually, his reasons for being sent away were redacted in his official records; given that Ostwick rarely shied from its soldiers' crimes (setting it aside from several other Circles at the time) this is doubly strange. We can only speculate as to whether the redaction was due to his noble status or due to a particularly personal or terrible crime. Either way, all communication between him and his family ceased immediately after. Any records of him in Ferelden also disappear around the time of the Fifth Blight, though many of Kincloch Hold's Templars were lost around that time.

Rose Trevelyan, of course, has been widely speculated about. While some depictions of her (such as Lily Smith's sensationalised 15:02 romance novel The Thorn) are largely fictional, many are based on what we have gleaned from letters exchanged, strangely enough, by members of the Hawke-Amell family. Through Bethany Hawke's letter to her brother, (see: The Bird's Shadow: A Collection of Bethany Hawke's Writings 9:35 - 9:61, 'Something terrible happened yesterday...', p. 65), we know both the cause and date of Rose Trevelyan's death, something unusual for a Circle mage of her era, particularly a Circle mage from Kirkwall just prior to the uprising. Many historians are rightfully irritated by the mytholisation of Rose, making claims that it is "disrespectful to treat dead women's trauma as a romantic fantasy" (Clark, 15:91), and expressing worries that it "conflates fact with fiction in a way that pollutes the truth as understood by wider society" (Angel, 15:43).  In my own reading of Smith's novel, however, I find that there is far more accuracy than she is given credit for. Her dedication to exploring 9th era Andrastrianism, for example, is commendable, especially compared to other notorious erotic historical romances, such as the works of George S. Flay or Steven Mire.

It is likely that even Lady Trevelyan knew little of these siblings. As far as we can tell, she never acknowledged them publicly - though, of course, her hardline beliefs on mages (including her apparent hand in Divine Victoria's ascension to the Sunburst Throne) may have given her reason to stay quiet. Interestingly, her relationship with her parents also appeared to be strained, with there being little recorded contact between them after the disbandment of the Inquisition. Given the family's secrecy, we can only guess what went on behind closed doors by pressing our ears up against them and listening for the roar.

Given that the collection has 151,406 words, if you turned it into one book it wouldn’t be a novel, it would be an epic

Ok so while I'd love to let this blindly stroke my ego, I do have to point out that the Spadesgore collection technically doesn't meet the criteria for an epic novel, I think? Like, not only does an epic require actual high stakes of epic proportions, but the collection was also never technically intended to be one huge thing. If it were turned into a book it'd probably be multiple, like a romance series where each subsequent entry is longer than the last for seemingly no good reason. And the fics themselves wouldn't be individual books, they'd be more like... chapters. This is a really bad analogy let me explain myself-

Since I started expanding the first fic, I planned for the series to be split into Arcs™. Basically, the story is all one continuous thing and belongs in one collection, but by the way the fics are planned/written, they (thus far) follow three major arcs. The first arc, the light world arc, lasts from "A talk by the lake" and concludes with "A series of very, very fortunate events" (about 40,157 words total). The second arc is the dark world arc, which begins with "Sleepy words" and ends with "Surprisingly perfect" (109,904 words in total, thanks in no small part to the beast that is "Royalty"). If turned into books, I'd want those individual arcs to be split into individual books, technically able to stand on their own but following the same overarching story. The third arc (which I don't have a name for yet oops) just got kicked off with "A kind of daydream, but don't call it that" and will encompass the next approx twenty-something fics (whenever I get around to writing them) that I have planned out that (somewhat) neatly wrap up most of the remaining threads I want to explore with these two.

I say most because there's stuff I might want to write for the collection even after that - ideas I left unexplored for the sake of time and cohesion - or even stuff concerning my other Spadesgore AUs that we aren't even factoring into the full word count (yet) that could get their own standalone expansions outside the collection (looking at you, demon AU). All of that is, however, majorly dependent on two factors. 1) how exhausted I feel with the concept of the Spadesgore collection after the third arc is finished, and 2) how I end up feeling about the next chapters of Deltarune. (Though I'll be honest the second point is a LOT less important than the first LMAO)

So, yeah! Thank you for the ask that let me segway into rambling about my godforsaken fic series structure, and I hope you look forward to the next entries in the collection as much as I do!

So this isn't a main ship of mine, but I actually do really like it. Especially in the context of last nights episode. Although we don't see Tolkien in it- the whole context with the farms and exploring Stan and wealth has me thinking about them.

I understand that this may not be the popular interpretation of the pairing since Stan is down to earth, but i'm inclined to write/feel what I know soooooo let's go.

They could so work with the despondent wealthy youths spending money on fast cars just to feel something trope. I think Tolkien would handle it better, but take Stans dysfunctional upbringing/new found wealth/proximity to Tolkien. Do you know the song Super Rich Kids by Frank Ocean? Yeah.

Thinking about them as late teens/young adults exploring that strange distance where they relate to their peers, and are still down to earth, but also have many new privileges that wealth provides.

At some point they're going to enjoy it and let fucking LOOSE. Because maybe the stress at home is too much, and maybe their friends are being shitty, and it's really easy to blow off steam when you have a little extra cash. I like the idea of them getting lost in a wild youth, and maybe experiencing things together that feel disconnected from reality because they can AFFORD to disconnect from reality.

Of course in this- theres kindness and gentleness. These are good kids. So maybe it gets taxing, and although the sex and glamour of exploring new freedoms is fun, sometimes all they want is the simplicity of a trip to Starks Pond, or a night camping in the woods, sleeping in the bed of Randy's old farm truck. They can vent about expectations, and how much they want to live for themselves, not what their family expects. I see them really enjoying the outdoors, quality time over anything else, and a really stable romance.

Also MUSIC! They would 100% both be into making each other playlists of whatever they're feeling. I think they are both okay with words, but music translates better. They're in Tolkien's room with a vinyl on, just talking until 2am because they feel so comfortable with each other- and the silence with just a song in the background, and Tolkien playing with Stans hair is just as comfortable.

Oh, who would have guessed? Needing to make a separate post all of my own because thirty tags is never enough for all that I have to say, for all that I have to, that I must type out? Me? Nooooo... lmao.

Anyway, here's my tags (and more of course there's always more) that were originally gonna be on silverformymonsters' gifset post of Astarion post-BG3 events sadly reaching his hand into sunlight, about a little imagined moment between him and my tav, Rose, now reformatted into a text post for all of yours' heartbreak and enjoyment.

I know this is a scene after everything. But I like to imagine it's a scene with not just him but also Rose. Not immediately after BG3 events. Not immediately after losing his ability to be in the sun. A bit of time after all that. Some personal quest of their's they're undertaking. Maybe to help him be in the sun again? Maybe something else, like for the 7000 vampire spawn in the Underdark? Maybe to find out more about his past, when he was alive? Of who he was, who family was etc.

Regardless, it's them underground in a cave. Rose is busy with something else. She's talking to Astarion while doing whatever she's doing. And mid-talking she finishes and turns around to see this. To see Astarion back turned to her, facing the sunlight peaking through from above. She stops talking immediately and just watches.

Watches as he reaches his hand out into the sunlight. Watches as he holds his hand out for as long as he can before it clearly hurts too much. Watches as his hand nearly fully turns to a gray ashy stone color, all too ready to crumble and drift away from a slight breeze. Watches as it shakes until he can't anymore, until he suddenly pulls his hand back. His hand immediately changes back to its normal color and appearance once as he does so but the moment is heartbrokenly seared into Rose's mind.

He half turns back to her. Eyes still on his hand. Mind surely still sadly reminiscing about when he very well could be in the sun. After a moment he looks up at her. Eyes staring back in… question, she takes it. As if to wonder why (and when) she stopped talking.

Although, he quickly realizes why. He frustratedly sighs and looks away for a moment (back to the sunlight) before turning back to her. Tells her about how 200 years in shadow he became all but used to the fact he would never see the sun again. Never feel its warmth on his skin. And then he had (a month? a few months? how long is bg3 supposed to take place? lmao) of it. It makes it all the more terrible to go back.

He knows they're looking for a way for him to be in the sun again. He knows that she'll search until her last breath and even then some. And, of course, he greatly appreciates it. She always has given him nothing but marvelous gift after gift. She is a marvelous gift. One that he will always cherish and be grateful for.

…But that doesn't mean he doesn't miss it. Miss the warm embrace of the sun. Miss being out during the day in the sun. ('You can forget just how much colour there is in the world.' She remembers well that odd out of the blue moment while they were in the city. It killed her then as does hearing him speak now about it breaks her heart completely.)

This is the price of his freedom though. Of their happy little life that they have now. He supposes it was well worth it. Even if he does miss the sun terribly. He tries to move the conversation back to why they're here in the first place but Rose refuses to let go of it.

She's immediately got her hands on his face, mouth on his (surprising him - what else is new lmao), fiercely kissing him with all the passion and heartbreak in the world, in the universe. And then wraps her arms tightly around him in a tight hug full of all her heartbreak and love for him.

She knows she's already done so before, but she pledges once again to him that they will find a way for him to see, to be in the sun again. She promises. She swears it.

Every time she's like this- With this fierce determination. This passionate loyalty (especially with him). It always somehow manages to surprise him. Even after all this time.

After a chuckle, he jokes about how she better (keep her word), he does terribly miss their little trysts, seeing her cheeks flush under the sunlight as he-

Okay! Okay. Oooh-kay. That's- That's enough. She immediately lets go of him and she's now changed the subject back to their job at hand.

As much as he doesn't wish to let go of the moment himself either, he still does. He knows she means it. She always has. And always will. And one day... He can't wait to see the sun again, to feel its warmth again, yes. But he can't wait to to see it, be under its rays once again with her. One day they- she will figure this out and he'll get see her beam just as bright as the sun above them. And he cannot wait to see it.

Sebastian Sallow had no idea what he had done to deserve this.

It wasn’t that he was complaining, necessarily. He liked when you paid attention to him—sought it out, even. But the way you were staring at him now, like a kneazle about to pounce, was putting him on edge.

He tried to ignore it at first. He really did.

But he could feel your gaze burning into the side of his face, your fingers twitching like you were physically holding yourself back from doing something rash. He did his best to focus on the essay in front of him, quill scratching steadily against the parchment, but when you huffed—a dramatic little exhale that was so very you—he finally snapped.

“You’re staring.”

“Mm.”

Sebastian lifted his head slowly, as if moving too fast would provoke you into an attack. “What now?”

“You’re being too cute again.”

Sebastian blinked. Once. Twice. Then, just to be sure, “Pardon?”

“You heard me.”

He set his quill down, eyeing you suspiciously. “I really don’t think I did.”

“You do cute things, Sebastian.” You gestured vaguely at him, your hands moving like you were trying to physically pluck the words from the air. “And it’s making me lose my mind.”

Sebastian leaned back against the couch, stretching his arms along the top of it as he smirked. “Go on.”

“See?! This! This is what I mean! You’re all smug about it, which makes it worse!”

He chuckled, thoroughly enjoying himself now. “So let me get this straight—you think I’m cute and that’s a problem?”

“Yes,” you deadpanned. “Because it makes me want to shake you.”

Sebastian raised a single, unimpressed eyebrow. “Shake me.”

“Yes.”

His smirk widened. “Like, out of frustration or—?”

“Sort of!” you blurted, hands twitching as you tried to explain the feral energy currently buzzing in your veins. “You’re just—you! And sometimes you look so stupidly handsome and do little things like chew on your quill and sit there all Sebastian-y, and it makes me want to—”

“What?” He was grinning now, utterly charmed despite himself.

You struggled for the right words before blurting, “Bite you!”

Sebastian’s expression instantly shattered into disbelief. “I’m sorry—what?!”

“Not hard!” you added quickly, waving your hands as if that somehow made it less unhinged. “Just—like, a little chomp! Affectionate!”

Sebastian gawked at you, floundering for a response. “You—you want to bite me because you love me?”

You swallowed, fighting the heat creeping up your neck, and doubled down. “Yes!"

Sebastian just ran a hand down his face, as if trying to process how this was his life.

“I don’t know whether to be flattered or afraid.”

“Both.”

Sebastian huffed a laugh, slouching dramatically against the couch, as if this was the greatest burden he had ever borne. You, however, were still buzzing with too much feeling, and now that the topic had been breached, your hands were itching to do something about it.

So you lunged.

Sebastian barely had time to react before your hands were on his face, squishing his cheeks together.

“You’re so cute and it infuriates me,” you growled, mushing his cheeks even more.

Sebastian made a muffled sound of protest, eyes widening in mock betrayal. “Hey!”

“This is your fault,” you declared, now aggressively ruffling his curls.

Sebastian finally wrestled your hands away and pinned them to the couch, breathless as he glared at you with flushed cheeks. “You menace!"

“You deserve this.” You were grinning, utterly delighted by his suffering.

Sebastian laughed, dropping his forehead dramatically against your shoulder. “Why am I in love with someone so insane?”

You beamed. “I don’t know but it’s too late now.”

Sebastian groaned, flopping back onto the couch with the resignation of a man who had lost every battle but still somehow won the war.

He sighed, eyes slipping closed as he let himself relax. You, now thoroughly satisfied, settled beside him, head resting on his shoulder.

And as he absentmindedly reached for your hand, intertwining his fingers with yours, Sebastian thought, at least she loves me.

Even if you did want to bite him.

the bell above the door jingled as you stepped into the daily grind, a cozy coffee shop tucked away on a quiet street corner. the smell of freshly ground coffee beans immediately wrapped around you, warm and comforting against the chilly morning air outside. the shop was charming, with mismatched furniture, chalkboard menu’s filled with handwritten specials, and shelves lined with quirky mugs.

soft indie music hummed in the background, and the buzz of quiet conversation gave the place a peaceful, lived-in feel.

as you made your way to the counter, the barista,

a guy with messy hair and a tattoo peeking out from under his rolled-up sleeve flashed you a smile. his name tag read alex.

“morning,” he greeted, his voice warm and casual. “what can I get for you today?”

you opened your mouth, but before you could respond, a voice from behind you spoke up in a tone that made you tense.

“are you seriously just standing there?” the woman behind you, clearly in a rush, tapped her foot impatiently. “there’s a line, you know. It’s not rocket science. just order something already.”

you blinked, taken aback by her bluntness, but before you could apologize, she muttered, “i don’t have all day,” and crossed her arms.

‘‘alex, give her a vanilla iced, oh and put it on my tab’’ a man sitting at the window, his laptop in front of him speaks up.

after a few minutes alex hands me the coffee the random man told me to get, great.

you look for a quiet place to sit and spot the man again, he has medium black hair, round glasses and is wearing a north face puffer jacket.

‘‘mind if i sit here?’’ you softly ask looking at the man sitting down, typing what seems like a essay.

when the man looks up you can see his full face, the way his eyebrow raised up when you spoke up, the way he stopped typing to look at you.

this guy was handsome, gosh.

‘‘oh yeah yeah, go ahead’’ he says before quickly standing up to pull the chair a bit.

as you sit down you thank him for the coffee and explain how you weren’t really that big of a coffee person.

“you’re welcome, jaewon by the way,” he said, offering his hand.

you introduced yourself, and soon the two of you fell into easy conversation. he asked what brought you to the coffee shop, and you explained you were escaping the rain and taking a break from work. when you returned the question, his eyes lit up.

“i write,” he said simply.

“like… essays or something?” you asked, taking a sip of your drink.

“something like that,” he replied, chuckling. “poems, mostly. and books.”

“oh, that’s cool,” you said, genuinely impressed. “do you do it like full-time?”

“i do,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “i’ve been lucky. a few of my books have done pretty well actually’’

“that’s amazing,” you said, your curiosity piqued. “what kind of books?”

he hesitated for a moment, as if choosing his words carefully. “mostly poetry, but I’ve dabbled in fiction. stories about connection, loss, love and kind of all sort of things that make us human.”

‘‘oh i’ll definitely check it out some time!’’ you answer with a kind smile.

there was a quiet passion in his words, a depth that made you want to hear more.

by the time the rain had stopped, you realized you’d spent hours talking to jaewon. as you gathered your things to leave, he tore a page from his notebook and handed it to you.

“a little something to remember me by,” he said with a kind smile.

a few hours later you were sitting on your couch, eating take away noodles like your life depended on it. you haven’t ate since the morning and really needed these noodles.

when you grab your phone you see a text from your best friend ellie.

you:

hey elle! met the cutest guy at the coffee shop today, he bought me a coffee #iaminlove

you:

okay so he was like a writer? apparently he is quite popular, i think he mostly writes poetry.

Took me a year and a half...

Back in fall 2022 I watched + read TONS of interviews about the movie & book and with the creators + actors. A year ago (this very month!) I read the book. But... Until today, I hadn't had the capacity to sit down and e x p e r i e n c e the movie itself.

Today, after mailing in my uncommitted, Democratic Party vote in the US Presidential Primary election, I made the time + space.

I do not believe this is a coincidence, even though it was entirely unplanned and took me by surprise. Fitting to watch it during Lent + at the beginning of Ramadan.

Can we talk?! W o W.

Each of the actors, individually, and the community they form together, are aMaZiNg. It's a heartbreaking story about an infuriating situation, and yet...

The story is full of so much love, respect, admiration, humour (!), tenderness, faithfulness, patience, discernment, and then, in the end, a series of inspiring choices forward. Along the way I gritted my teeth, gasped, laughed, and w e p t several different types of tears.

2024 is also a time full of hard truths about reckoning and rage on many different topics. It's the perfect time to be inspired by the courage of this community + their secretary.
