WIP Wednesday 📝

So even though yesterday’s snippet kinda flopped like a dead fish, I kept at it and ended up writing almost 1K for my buddie Fantasy AU! 🤩

I’ve been trying to work on my descriptive writing and am quite happy with how this turned out.

The sun is still sitting below the horizon, its light not yet touching the city and waking it from its slumber, when he hears a crash from down an alley. He knows it’s probably a bad idea to investigate, that a mysterious noise in a dark alley is an opening in almost every crime drama for a reason, but someone could be in trouble and Buck’s conscience won’t just let him walk on by without checking. He makes his way down the alley, his steps quick but cautious, careful not to make too much noise. If someone dangerous is lurking down here, he doesn’t want to give away his position so easily. Assuming they don’t have a visual on him already.

Buck's heart thuds in his chest as he moves further into the alleyway. The alley is shrouded in darkness, the only light coming from the streetlight on the road that is struggling to pierce through the shadows. The air is heavy with something that smells like rotten eggs, the scent so thick it makes Buck gag. He covers his nose and mouth with his hand, trying to block the pungent smell as best he can.

He reaches the end of the alleyway but finds no one, only a dumpster overflowing with construction waste and a rat that quickly scurries off into the darkness. Buck scoffs and shakes his head at himself; trust him to wander all the way down an alley because of a rat. As he turns to leave and continue his trek home, he jolts with a sudden fright. Standing at the mouth of the alley is a large dog.

“Holy fuck,” Buck exclaims, pressing a hand to his chest, his heart beating rapidly under his palm. “You scared the shit out of me buddy.”

The dog lifts it’s head as if sniffing the air and emits a low growl that has the hair on Buck’s arms and the back of his neck standing up. The dog begins to move forward, its form seeming to grow larger with each step until the once Rottweiler sized dog is now the size of a small horse, it’s shoulder easily at Buck’s hip height.

With trembling hands, Buck pulls out his phone and turns on the flashlight, casting a dull light onto the creature. Its black fur blends in with the darkness of the night and appears short in length everywhere apart from what Buck can only describe as a mane mullet along the back of its neck. It has razor- sharp claws protruding from each massive paw and its face is scarred and skeletal in appearance, its eyes blood red and glowing, pointed teeth on full display as it snarls at Buck.

I just like don't understand what people who don't watch/obsess over HTTYD (especially the shows) do all day. What do you THINK ABOUT if not the gang's relationships w eachother and their dragons, or the HTTYD ost or play moments from the movies and shows over and over in your head or how much you WISH you could ride a dragon (and which one you would ride) like?????? Squeaking in just after midnight in my time zone with something new. Because, as the saying goes, there's nothing a new WIP can't fix. The best I can say about it right now is a bit of a character study, maybe 5+1 situation about Lucy Donato. Because I'm unapologetically in love with her. I want to post everything I've written so far but I'll spare your dash.

“Lucy! Come on down. You’re going to miss the bus!”  “Be right there!” Lucy yells back.  She’s not going to be late. Because it’s the first day of second grade and there’s absolutely no way that weasel, Julian, is going to beat her to the bus stop. Even if he is a grade ahead of her, she’s faster and she knows it. She can feel it down in her bones.  She finishes clipping the straps of her denim overall shorts before sitting down to put on her yellow socks and brand new shoes. Her mom and dad had let her pick them out all on her own this year. Bright white sneakers emblazoned with Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles from her favorite cartoon. Today is the first time Lucy’s allowed to wear them due to her mom being convinced she would get them filthy otherwise. After her laces are tied, she hurriedly stands then takes the steps two at a time until she’s close enough to jump the rest of the way.  Her mom sighs from behind the freezer door where she’s grabbing an ice pack for Lucy’s lunchbox. “How many times have I told you-”  An exasperated look comes over her mom’s face when she notices Lucy standing there. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before opening them again. “I thought you were going to wear that nice green dress Aunt Cynthia bought for you? We had everything all picked out last night. What happened?” Lucy shrugs. “I can’t wear sneakers with that and I have to wear them so I can be faster than Julian.” “Unbelievable,” her mom mutters under her breath. “It’s your first day and you need to put on something nice. Go hurry and get changed so I don’t have to drive you in.” “But-” Lucy begins to protest, but is quickly dismissed. “Change clothes. Now.” “Fine!” Lucy stomps back up to her bedroom, slamming the door shut behind her. She kicks off her shoes and throws the rest of her clothes in a heap on the floor. Her body feels too gangly and uncoordinated as she slips the sleeveless, knee-length dress over her head. She adds the stupid, matching green gingham headband, letting it push back her hair that’s more white than blonde from all her time spent in the sun.  Lastly, she angrily stuffs her feet into the uncomfortable tan sandals, securing the strap over her ankles. The bottoms are hard and flat with no spring to them. How is she meant to get to the stop first in these awful things?

I love the sacrificial lamb trope, anyone who’s ever done rp with me will tell you that I very often end up killing my OCs (whoops).

BUT

Cannibalism as a metaphor for love??? What is love if not devouring each other’s hearts and entire beings?? What is more loving than the consumption of everything your lover is??

Now hear me out

Sacrificial lamb + cannibalism as a metaphor for love + some sprinkles of religious imagery = my jam, my everything, my reason to live if you will!

Some dude: "Can someone explain the attraction to the guy [Astarion]? Even with the great voice acting, he comes off as an entitled scuzzball."

Hm, let's see. I find him hilarious and physically attractive, so jot that down. His story as a victim of sexual, physical, emotional abuse and slavery resonates with me, so I completely understand why he is the way he is (honestly, he could've been A LOT worse). His first meeting with the player character where he holds a knife to their throat is right up my "enemies to friends to lovers" trope loving alley. Him being a vampire is a bonus because I consume quite a bit of vampire media. When it comes down to it, he's a survivor who wants someone to care about him and I can relate.

Also, and this is the most important part, he's fictional. So, maybe stop worrying about what people think about a fictional character you don't like and maybe, I don't know, get over it? 💕

Inda’s on sale for the next few days if anyone wants to peer into my heart.

If I loved this series less I would be able to talk about it more (eloquently), but these books have such a profound and intricate sense of events—what drives the people who motivate change, for better or worse. Its characters are complex and rarely flat, and while the series is about battle, politics, and war, and the people are always flawed, its heartache is spectacularly, beautifully woven.

Sherwood Smith calls these books the historical arc, and I think they capture the way history moves, all while allowing you to see the people who created it and why they did. To me, it’s a masterwork of character and sociological storytelling, from the complexities of love and loyalty to the absence of both.

And if you enjoy the first book, I’m pretty damn sure you’ll love the second (and hopefully the third and fourth too).

omg i was actually working on this right before getting this ask but i was debating not posting it because it is really just they’re all gay and i was worried it would just seem repetitive lol (since i project onto my faves and rufus/the turks happen to actually be very high on my fave character list)

my lgbtq+ headcanons for the turks (+rufus):

rufus: they/them nonbinary gay and on the asexual spectrum - i feel like he’s very closeted due to being such a public figure but he’s very open to the people around him! i definitely think he leans towards the transmasc end of the nonbinary spectrum but he also knows his father wanted a son so he chooses to still not really say he’s actually transmasc out of pure spite for his father

reno: he/they/she transman gay - he is obnoxiously flamboyantly gay!!! i can not be convinced otherwise!!! but he’s also just genuinely comfortable in his identity and doesn’t care how anyone else perceives him! he’s also basically immune to trans/homophobes because he knows how to get under their skin and fight back! and i feel like he would be very defensive and protective over his trans friends too, also pre transition he was definitely a “girls girl” and i feel like he keeps that up post transition to an extent

tseng: he/him gay - he’s just comfortably gay yknow? he knew who he was basically all his life and he never thought anything of it! he will casually mention he’s gay if the topic arises but otherwise he makes no point to closet himself or out himself, he doesn’t care what other people think of him or think his sexuality is because he knows who he is

rude: they/she demiboy and heavily on the aroace spectrum but mostly gay oriented - he doesn’t care about sex or romance for the most part unless it is ultra specific people that are incredibly close to him!

cissnei: they/he nonbinary lesbian - she’s another one that i think is just very comfortable in her identity, she never dwelled on it too much and just sort of knew, although i think she’s very very open about who she is, she’s proud of her identity

elena: she/they transwoman lesbian and on the aromantic spectrum - she feels like a lesbian in denial to me, like she knows deep down but she’s still a little too scared to come to terms with it and about how she’ll be perceived, its not until she receives unwavering support from the people around her that she’s able to finally feel free, happy and comfortable in who she is

and i was also planning on doing asgz hcs too lol and i probably still will but i am a huge transmasc gen truther!!! although i actually tend to lean more towards seph being agender! but i totally respect your hc too!!! i think transfem seph is an interesting take on him (in a positive way!) it’s just not my personal hc :)

But it's just an outline and the author saying: "Never say never, but I don't think I'll be finishing this story again someday.". Like don't get me wrong, good for them for not forcing themselves and thanks for the outline. I just don't like my hopes being crushed...

AH definitely both— I think Lilia would be fiercely defensive of his son and be like 'yes, you are the crown prince, but I (ex-General Vanrouge) am fully capable of high treason and regicide if you harm my child :)'

However on the more 'political' side of things, I could see Lilia supporting as it would align with his 'humans & fae living in peace' wish— what would be more of an accomplishment to see in his lifetime than his treasured son and their beloved prince unify their people together? (even better if Silver does turn out to be a stolen prince!)
