I love your ‘Uno Reverse’ series! Photographs are a such a scarce but important resource for a dress historian, and this series really puts things into perspective. Thanks for doing this work!
Do you have any advice for someone like me who wants to become a dress conservator/historian? I’m a tailor’s apprentice but I’m having a lot of trouble deciding how to continue my education.
Glad you're enjoying it :)
Oooh, big question. Prepare for a lot of words:
Dress history is a weird field to get into. If you want to be a historian, unless you're independently wealthy and can just spend all your time researching and writing, the usual professions are curatorship and professorship. There aren't a lot of either position available - many settle for historical societies, small colleges, etc - and neither make much in the way of money. Definitely consider your options very thoroughly! (Though if you're a tailor's apprentice you probably already know that, lol.)
Conservation is - from my POV - a better choice in the long run, because while institutions can stop hiring people to teach or do research, any place with a collection has to keep conserving it. Conservators also make more money, no question.
I went to a program that specialized generalized in both (FIT). Like you, I was unsure of what I wanted, and the flexibility was attractive. Other programs tend to specialize in one or the other, and now that I've been through FIT's program, I understand exactly why. There was no way to give us both curricula in their entirety in the two years we had, and I ended up feeling like I barely learned anything. However, I was coming from having completed a long conservation internship; I had studied up pretty thoroughly on fashion history before I attended the program at all; and I had already been through a separate MA previously, so I already had research and writing skills on a higher level than FIT even cares about. Given that caveat.. if I were to go back in time with this info, I would attend a different program that specialized in one or the other and therefore provided more comprehensive skills.
If you're interested in conservation, my biggest piece of advice would be to do an internship, preferably with a firm that specializes in it or at a big museum with a dedicated department. That will give you experience and familiarity like nothing else and also help you to understand whether it's the right field for you. But internships like that can be pretty competitive, so the second best option is to volunteer at a local historical society or house museum. Almost all of them are constantly on the lookout for volunteers, especially ones interested in preservation and the more scientific side of collections management. You won't be paid, unfortunately, but the upside is that almost any small institution will happily take helpers because they're desperate and cash-strapped. Reading through online publications like the National Park Service's Conserve-O-Gram is a great way to start building knowledge if nobody there is equipped to give it to you. (Every institution I've worked at has had a copy on hand for reference, lol.)
I volunteered for a small house museum years back and literally on day one they threw me at the clothing collection and told me to dress mannequins and pack textiles. I had very little idea what I was doing, but it was a great learning experience - and one that you're never going to get at a museum internship because they're so much more careful about their objects and access. (Pros and cons, but hey.)
+ As far as I know, you will need an MA to be hired to most conservation positions, but there's no reason you can't get started in the field without it first and make sure that's the degree you want/need. In terms of curatorship/professorship, an MA will get you into small local colleges but for anything larger you'll need a PhD, and that's a big commitment. You have to really like academia to get one of those suckers! As far as I'm aware, there are no stipended MA programs and only one PhD program (Bard) in this specific field that pays, so again, you have to be fiscally comfortable (or willing to go into debt and work two jobs) to get an advanced degree in the subject. It's a vicious cycle that keeps a lot of people out, and institutions can afford to keep it up because it's so competitive. +
All that said, historic sewing is a fantastic way to get into the field because knowledge of construction and technique gives you an excellent understanding of historic dress, and hand sewing techniques are essential for conservation. You're already on the right track!
If you want any book recs, off of the top of my head Refashioning and Redress and The Care and Display of Historic Clothing are two great, readable volumes.
Let me know if you have any other questions, but hopefully this helps!
#fashion history#dress history#textile conservation#advice#My second choice for MA was glasgow FYI#and in retrospect i think i would have liked it way more#but i haven't been so i can't say for sure!#i also know people who've attended UNL and i know Georgia has a program#California also has some more science-heavy conservation programs#i am technically trained as both a conservator and historian but god save you if you actually want me to conserve anything#the stories i can tell about FIT........#masters trauma#i say this jokingly but it's real#my other MA meanwhile was great#not all academia traumatizes alike#:)

AFO had pulled the masked and hooded teen to his side as he taunted All Might. Bakugo could just barely hear him speak.
Or
Izuku went missing after saving Bakugo from the sludge villain. No one knew what truly happened to him until Izuku was finally away from the villains. Heroes and officers alike are horrified by what the boy has experienced when they interview him, amazed at how he survived, and astonished by his will of steel, holding strong despite everything.

Everyone from pro heroes to villains alike are wondering if the rumors about Endeavor's questionable parenting are true. Was his firstborn son's death truly a tragic accident or was his death murder? What kind of connection is there between Shouto Todoroki and the vigilante Blueflame best known as Dabi in the underground circles? The HPSC really wants to know the answer to the last one and how much of a coverup will they have to do to hide it. That's how the number three prohero Hawks ended up as a TA at U.A, while moonlighting as a rogue hero and trying to get into the League of Villains. Icarus or Atlas?
Icarus or Atlas? by Etagirl
Hawks is far from your average twenty-two year-old pro-hero. Groomed from a young age to be the perfect spy by the Hero Public Safety Commission, how does he handle the constant pressure and the weight of the world on his shoulders? Or at least the weight of Japan. Citizens and Pro-Heroes alike compare him to and jokingly refer to him as Icarus, but perhaps it'd be more accurate to call him Atlas! (Sorry author sucks at summaries).
The title's a WIP, I may or may not change it later. This fic is basically an excuse to put Hawks through a lot of pain (but also fluff and comfort!) so it gets a bit self-indulgent at times lol. It's also an excuse to get out all my Hawks headcanons lol (and some other people's headcanons too). I plan for each chapter to be a self-contained story, so sorry if they get a little long. We'll see how long I keep this up for lol, my motivation to write is fleeting. Anyway hope you guys enjoy!

Cigarettes That Burn
Cigarettes That Burn by BlueCats
For most of his life, Hitoshi has known he's a hopeless case. He knows that he's broken, that he'll never be more than the words in his file or the taunts of peers and parents alike, and he's accepted that. It doesn't matter that his new foster father seems to care a bit too much when Hitoshi doesn't even care about himself, and it doesn't matter that Aizawa ruffles his hair sometimes, or feeds him warm meals even though he can't cook for shit, or tells him he believes in him. Hitoshi knows that it'll all be over in a matter of months, no matter what Aizawa says, and maybe all he can do is speed up the process. Maybe, in the end, it'll hurt less.
Or: When Hitoshi is stressed, he falls into old habits, but Aizawa is there to pick up the pieces.

You know what fucking sucks? When you’re the only black person in a class and a non-black student decides it’s a good idea to write a research paper on racism in America by focusing on the Green Book and claiming that neighbourhoods with more black people are the reason why more black people get killed there. Oh and don’t forget that she called us “the blacks”. I could feel myself wanting to disappear the entire presentation. -black girl anon
skskkslLSKAOKSOAKOAK YIKES I’m so so so sorry. I’ve definitely been in a similar spot before. Academia is a very weird space to be in as a minority (in this case as a POC, but I’ve heard from women in male-dominated majors and trans friends in pretty much every class that this is true as well). Honestly during undergrad I should have just made a list of the batshit racist things white people, students and professors alike, have said and done in class. Here are some off the top of my head:
“we should continue stop and frisk and I don’t care that it’s ineffective or that it’s harming black people because that doesn’t affect me”
“call me a racist, I don’t care, but…”
“you have to admit people like to see pretty things” after me saying that there’s no POC in most movies
one of my professors played several films that were so racist they were literally banned from airing, WITHOUT trigger warnings, then when i told her to stop she refused
“it’s kind of a crazy coincidence how the government keeps rerouting pipelines and other environmental disasters into indigenous people’s lands haha!!”
putting zero authors of color on a syllabus (and this was for a women’s and gender studies class i shit you not)
“the african readings are optional”
straight up saying the n word multiple times in one class period
literally all my classes without fail looked like a carton of a dozen white eggs with me and the (at most) 2 other POC clumped in the corner not talking to anyone
talking over and laughing at POC every time we talk
constantly claiming POC in the class are abrasive/aggressive, SOMETIMES WHEN WE LITERALLY DIDN’T EVEN TALK (often because we were distressed into silence by the caucasity unfolding before our eyes)!?!?!?!
Like, I would just sit there in class like fucking wow. What the fuck is going on in here on this day. I’m stunned into silent hot rage/fear at what is being said. And this is just the obvious, basic stuff I remember. There’s so much more fuckery that would go on every day. It’s traumatic.
#ask to tag#maxine talks college#me and the one other poc i only talk to bc we have one (1) class together every time susan decides to act up:#hello darkness my old friend

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
When my concerned parents faced the early and unpleasant realization that they were raising a ravenous little horror hound, it meant that they had to somehow split the difference between their strict curbing of my potentially mid-warping viewing habits, and their principled encouragement of unfettered reading. That must be how I came into possession of a copy of Thomas Harris' harrowing police procedural The Silence of the Lambs at the tender age of 10, even as the film adaptation was being touted by many viewers as The Scariest Movie of All Time. I carried that book around like the Bible well into my teenage years, reading and re-reading it with even greater fervor after my parents finally decided that the film was sophisticated enough for me to watch without it turning me into some kind of animal-torturing arsonist. (Said screening was chaperoned and accompanied by an academic post-viewing family discussion, of course) The decision seemed to make sense; after all, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS had swept the Oscars the year it was released, scooping up wins for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture. This is not to say that my intellectual and art-appreciating family regarded the Academy as the ultimate arbiters of taste and achievement. I mention these accolades more to point out that, as my parents had surely noticed, the film holds a certain power over viewers on both sides of the high-low cultural divide, a spell that has hardly weakened in its twenty-seven years of life.
As a child, I certainly responded to the same things that piqued the general public: Anthony Hopkins' iconic performance as Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter, his ambiguous romance with purehearted FBI trainee Clarice Starling, and the controversial perversity of serial killer Buffalo Bill. Though the story shares the influence of real-life ghoul Ed Gein with classic shockers like PSYCHO and THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, the impact of SILENCE is more akin to that of DRACULA. Much of the enduring discussion about the film revolves around the tantalizing chemistry between the preternaturally elegant Dr. Lecter and the virginal Starling; the rest is somewhat unfortunately focused on Ted Levine's eccentric performance as the (pseudo-) transsexual murderer at large, which has come under some understandable scrutiny. However, it would be unjust to reduce Jonathan Demme's movie to a gothic romance, or a gory shocker, or a campy cult item with ironic eroticism and a great soundtrack. There simply have to be better reasons for a movie to stick around this long, lingering in the minds of stuffy critics and the hoi polloi alike.
In preparing my statements about what makes THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS stand out, I learned something very shocking: It began its life as the directorial project of Gene Hackman. Hackman eventually dropped out when the script produced by (Oscar-winner) Ted Tally turned out to be too violent. Prospective Starlings like Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan were similarly disgusted, so Demme got stuck with a less likely candidate in (Oscar-winner) Jodie Foster. Personally, I find (Oscar-winner) Demme himself to be an unlikely candidate. The director cut his teeth on exploitation movies under Roger Corman, and by the time of SILENCE, had distinguished himself as a hipster extraordinaire, directing classic performance videos for the Talking Heads and Spaulding Gray, as well as chic comedies speckled with cameos from the likes of John Waters, and underground music firebrands from New York's new wave scene. Time would prove that Demme and his frequent collaborator, cinematographer Tak Fujimoto, were perfect choices for this grim project, which only supports the idea that there is something more happening with SILENCE OF THE LAMBS than its gruesome violence and epic sexual tension.
In light of these more famous elements, one might expect an adaptation of Thomas Harris' grim and seductive novel to be grandiose, expressionistic, swathed in a dense physical and emotional mist, rumbling with its own pomp and circumstance. An orphan from the hills of West Virginia, Clarice Starling is a tragic hero from the start, guarding her broken heart against a world of condescending and hostile men. Her mentor Jack Crawford seems to distinguish himself from the herd by assigning her the ambitious task of interviewing notorious serial killer Hannibal Lecter for the FBI's files--but in fact, Crawford is counting on Starling's feminine charms and naivety, secretly using her to manipulate Lecter into profiling a killer at large, Buffalo Bill. In spite of this nasty revelation, Starling sticks with it, suffering Lecter's high-minded insults and penetrative analysis of her character, and eventually earning his admiration. She proves herself not only brave and determined, but a detective of unparalleled wit and instinct, single-handedly taking down the polymorphously perverse Buffalo Bill in his moth-filled subterranean lair, rescuing a high-profile victim where the entire rest of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have failed.
This all seems to portend a bigger, louder movie than what has been committed to film. However, the book has a certain organic grit to it, something honest, downbeat and tragically real, which Demme and Fujimoto grasp instinctively. The film provides a dry, frank view of the life of Clarice Starling: the toil of academia, the drudgery of physical conditioning, the undermining attitudes of her mostly-male peers. Shot in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, Starling's world is bleak and desolate, but earnestly so, without the pageantry of the film noir and Universal horror movies with which it is so easily compared. Demme's education under B-movie king Corman shows here, and makes for a much more compelling iteration of the story than we might have from someone less accustomed to economy. While SILENCE has developed a reputation for its brutality, the film is not remotely so gore-drenched as many traumatized viewers would have you believe. That said, it may be the film's generally stark and desicated look, its workaday-ness, and its endless (wonderful) dialogic exchanges that throw into relief its comparatively minimal violence, which usually appears not in scenes of assault, but in crime scene photos or autopsy scenes.
The blanched, dreary look of the film also offsets the emotional plight of Clarice Starling. She is afforded no real romance, external or internal. The petite and clear-eyed orphan is visibly used to, and exhausted by, the constant need to look out for herself, and SILENCE will see her shuffled from one humiliating personal trial to the next. She is led into a perilous situation by a mentor who pretends to respect her abilities, but who really counts on her to fall short of discovering his scam; She is trapped in roomfuls of macho cops who scarcely acknowledge her; She has to negotiate the sexual attention of evidence technicians and bureaucrats; She even has semen flung at her by a particularly rambunctious neighbor of Lecter's. (And how often do you see that in any movie? As gross as it is, it has a way of reinforcing the extreme adult-ness of Demme's often dry, methodical movie) And then of course, there is Lecter himself, who turns Starling's personal vulnerability into a form of currency with which she can buy the scant clues that lead her to her quarry. Instead of eroticizing the anomalous femininity that Starling brings to the traditionally masculine world of law enforcement, Demme constantly reminds you of her fear, her embarrassment, her alienation. One can also imagine the temptation to Ripley-fy the character, presenting her as a fully-formed badass not to be fucked with. Instead, by eschewing both these femme and fatale modes, Demme describes Clarice Starling as three-dimensional human being whose heroism is extremely hard-won. While the character is undeniably one of the great Strong Female Protagonists, Jodie Foster's performance somehow defies the cinematic semiotics of gender altogether, giving us a person whose most important qualities are purely psychological. Tak Fujimoto drives the point home by frequently filling the screen with closeups of her face, focusing us on what she thinks and says, taking the proverbial heat off her body. Even as Lecter probes her for painful biographical information, Starling's sexuality remains entirely private--still a rare thing in any movie with a lady lead.
I don't mean to suggest that THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is principally successful because of its plucky girl detective--that contributes to its greatness, but not in the feminist fashion that I seem to be angling for. I am reviewing this movie presently because I recently found myself looking back on my own history with it, comparing my feelings with those of popular audiences, and thinking, "What is The Silence of the Lambs really about?" It can't be so beloved *only* due to the sexy slow burn between Anthony Hopkins' Count Dracula and Jodie Foster's Mina Harker. It can't be *just* a matter of the exotic insanity of the gender-bending madman sewing together the flesh of his victims and dancing provocatively to "Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus (a sadly mysterious musician who Demme certainly knew from his involvement in the New York underground). All of these characters, and their respective dynamics, contribute to the important thrill of this movie, but not in the way that most people seem to think.
Rather like the director's earlier work with iconoclastic punk icons and indie auteurs, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is about authenticity. Hannibal Lecter, the unparalleled genius whose culinary expertise is part of his murderous MO, is a serial killer because he has such refined taste and decorum that he cannot live peaceably among other people. He favors victims whom he perceives as tacky, pretentious and impertinent--Starling knows that he would never harm her because, as she famously remarks, "He would consider it rude." Lecter is fascinated, not by her youthful beauty as Crawford had hoped, but by her sincerity. Starling is brilliantly intelligent in her own right, as she proves through her police work, but she doesn't have an ironic bone in her body. She is the most unpretentious individual alive, and nothing could be more interesting to Lecter, who preys upon people who are untrue to others and to themselves. Meanwhile, we have Buffalo Bill, who is attempting to change his sex by crafting a full-body "woman suit"--but, as Lecter insists, the killer is not a "true transsexual" whose legitimate identity is that of the opposite sex. Buffalo Bill is someone who was reared by his abusive parents to hate himself so much, that he is compelled to escape his natural identity; becoming a woman is less important as a matter of self-actualization, than as a means of becoming an entirely different person, *any* different person. He has been so radically alienated from his own essence by this self-loathing, that he is incapable of authenticity of any kind.
That, I really think, is the secret power of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS: the at-once satanic and profoundly innocent declaration, "to thine own self be true". I would really love to get into a deeper dive on this movie at some point, to discuss what I think must have been the very best and very last time that Anthony Hopkins gave us a fearless and unpredictable (and in this case, somewhat hilarious) performance; to insist that Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill and Brooke Smith as his would-be victim actually give the best performances in the whole movie; to talk about the problem of the Ubiquitous Daddy Figure (of whom there are no fewer than THREE in this movie) in so many narratives about powerful women; to simply analyze the movie's sly psychological techniques, like fully humanizing Brooke Smith *just* by showing her singing a few bars of a beloved pop song in closeup, immediately before her fate takes a disastrous turn. (I would probably not take such an opportunity to investigate accusations of homophobia and transphobia, which requires a smarter and more directly experienced voice than my own) There is really a lot to say about why SILENCE is so powerful, without even threatening to address its most famous features. Unfortunately, I don't have the gumption or the madness to commit all that to Letterboxd at the moment, so I'll have to be satisfied with my primary conclusion: That the film's simplicity and gritty naturalism mirror its commitment to spiritual purity, honesty, and self-knowledge at all costs. Even at the high cost of wearing a muzzle, any time they let you out of your cage.

Concrete - (BNHA/MHA - Kacchako)
Disclaimer: I do not own Boku No Hero Academia. I am not making a profit off of this.
A/N: ... My husband said this was mean when he beta'd this for me. Debating on there being a second part? Maybe? I dunno...

“Where the hell is she?”
Midoriya shook his head, checking over each shoulder as the dust from the collapsing building engulfed them. “I don’t know,” he shouted. “She-“ He turned, starting at the destruction is awe. “She said she heard someone, so she went back in.”
“No.” She wasn’t that stupid. “What the hell do you mean she went back in?”
“She said she heard someone screaming,” Midoriya sputtered, cement and drywall crunching underneath his boots. “Kacchan,” he shook his head, looking at the broken bricks and dust at his feet. Everyone, heroes and civilians alike, was covered in dust, blood, scrapes, and bruises. “Uraraka was right behind me. She went back, but,” he looked at where the building once was. “I swear- I saw her, she-“
“You let her?!” Bakugo screamed, grabbing the teen by his suit.
Midoriya’s eyes wide, his own panic slowly rising. “What was I supposed to do?!”
People around him were screaming, crying out in agony from injuries and panic as Bakugo fought for control. He felt the sting of tears gathering at the corners of his eyes as he fought to breathe, “You weren’t supposed to leave her alone in there!”
“I didn’t!” Midoriya yelled, yanking himself out of Bakugo’s grasp. “She was right behind me!”
“Then where is she?!” Bakugo shouted, looking around them as the dust began to settle around them.
Midoriya looked around him. Dust covered bodies moved like ghosts wandering in the afterlife, eyes hollow and traumatized as police, firefighters, and heroes worked on rescue and recovery.
They could see women screaming for their children.
Children covered in dust and blood wailing for comfort.
Wives and husbands embracing each other, while others screamed.
“I don’t know,” Midoriya whispered shaking his head. “She-“
“I swear to god Deku if sh-“ He couldn’t finish that sentence. “Uravity!” He screamed running toward the center of the damage. The pit of his elbow covered his mouth as be battled through the dust. “Uravity!” He screamed, frantically looking around him. “Uraraka!” He weaved in between bodies, quickly checking each person to make sure they weren’t her. Bakugo circled around the rubble, chest heaving. She couldn’t be underneath the slabs of broken concrete, steel, and drywall.
Uraraka knew better.
“Ochako!”
She’d know to get as far out as she could to increase her chances of being found underneath the rubble, rather than being in the center of the building during the collapse. Even then, she couldn’t be pinned.
He trusted that she’d float herself out of the damage. She had to have.
Bakugo stopped, breathing heavily as his eyes scanned the area. Several bodies were strewn out around the area, a black tag dangling from their wrists marked their fate.
Dead on scene.
“Fuck,” he whispered, wheezing at the sight of a slender wrist and matted chestnut brown hair peeking out from under a large concrete slab. Bright red pooled around the body, staining the asphalt.
That wasn’t her.
He collapsed down, hands bunching on his knees as he felt panic throb through his chest and his stomach turn. “Ochako!” He screamed as loud as his voice could carry, tears squeezing from his eyes as he heaved.
That wasn’t her.
His hands dug into knees, jaw clenching as he fought the urge to scream.
“That’s not her,” he whispered as he hung down. “That’s not her.”
That body had a black sleeve like her suit.
“Damn it,” he whimpered, legs feel nearly buckling.
She’d taken her bracelets off before the the mission, afraid they’d get caught on something during the rescue effort.
It could be her.
Soaked palms slowly lowered to the ground as Bakugo’s knees finally gave out. Heavy tears clung to his eyelashes as he struggled for air, trying to get his brain to cling to reason.
She could have escaped.
Just because she hadn’t exited directly behind Midoriya didn’t mean she hadn’t gotten out safely. The perimeter of this building was huge. Uraraka could be on the other side.
Alive.
Not pinned beneath a piece of rubble with a black tag tied to her.
Bakugo wasn’t going to be able to focus until he found her. “Ochako,” he whispered, biting down on his lip. His eyes screwed shut. He swallowed a bitter lump of anguish as he focused on blocking out the noise around him.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, Bakugo knew death was a likely outcome in their profession. Whether they battled adversaries or the elements, their jobs were dangerous. Each time any of them answered the call to protect, they recognized it could potentially be their last time.
He just didn’t think it would be this soon.
The two of them were supposed to have more time together. They were supposed to graduate, become pros, get married, have kids, have a future, and bicker over places to eat.
She wouldn’t do this to him.
He had to keep moving. If she was pinned beneath the rubble, Bakugo knew he had minutes to get her out.
She could be somewhere on scene helping to dig bodies out from the rubble.
“It’s Ground Zero!”
Soft uneven footsteps echoed in Bakugo’s ears. “It is,” a breathy voice answered in front of him.
Bakugo’s head snapped up, feeling air crush from his lungs. “Ochako…” He panted, watching her appear from the dust.
Uraraka limped toward him, covered from head to toe in dust and debris. Her suit was ripped and brown hair matted with blood as she cradled a child against her chest. One of her boots was missing and the other was broken and barely hanging on her foot.
“I need a medic!” Bakugo roared running over to her, wrapping an arm around her waist as he helped her walk.
“I’m fine,” Uraraka breathed heavily as she leaned against him. “We’re,” she pushed a smile on her face as ignored the pain radiating through her body. Uraraka looked down at the boy in her arms. “Going to help you find your parents, okay buddy?”
The little boy looked up at her. Eyes wide and wet with tears as he gave her a little nod.
“We’re getting you to a hospital,” Bakugo insisted, tentatively placing a hand on top of her hand. He pulled his hand back seeing his palm covered in blood. “You’re bleeding.”
“It’s,” Uraraka wheezed, shaking her head to chase away the darkness. “Just a scratch. I’m fine.”
“You-“
“We have to help Hiroshi find his mom.” Her pace slowed as she felt the effects of adrenaline fade from her system.
“Give me the kid,” Bakugo commanded gently, stopping them. He gently lifted the boy from her arms carrying him on his hip and tucking his other arm securely next to her.
“I’m-“
“We need to get you to a medic,” he tugged her, feeling her steps get heavy. “Now.”
“I-“ She gasped, feeling the adrenaline fade. The sudden searing in her side caused her chest to clench. Air rushed out of her lungs as Uraraka found it hard to take in another breath. “Katsu-“
“Shit!” Bakugo yelled as her knees buckled.
Uraraka fell forward, hands barely catching her fall as she landed on her side. Blood spilled around her.
Why hadn’t he seen she was bleeding? Where was all that blood coming from?
“Shit, shit, shit…” Bakugo murmured placing the kid on the ground. “Hey kid!” He firmly held Hiroshi’s shoulders. “I need you to run and get help for us, okay?”
Hiroshi stared at the fallen hero eyes wide and scared as he watched the ground around her turn bright red.
“Kid!” Fuck, what had she called the kid? “Hiroshi!” Bakugo barked, quickly exhaling as he tried to calm himself. If he scared the kid, he wouldn’t be able to help. “Uravity is going to be fine, but we need you to get someone. She needs help, understand?”
The child nodded slowly. “Okay,” Hiroshi whispered his eyes wide with fear.
“Go get help,” Bakugo repeated. He gave the child a gentle push as he crawled over to Uraraka. “Ochako, what hurts? I need you to talk to me.” His hands trembled as he gently rolled her to her back.
Uraraka’s hands pressed against her side she looked down noticing a jagged piece of metal sticking out.
“Shit, why didn’t you say anything?” He murmured, pressing around the metal penetrating her skin. The best case scenario would be a superficial wound, but her irregular breathing and blood loss let him know that this wasn’t the best case scenario.
“Didn’t hurt,” she gasped, eyes fluttering closed. The kid pressed against her side must have steadied the metal penetrating her side.
“Hey you, don’t close your eyes!” Bakugo yelled. He moved a hand off her side and gently tapped the side of her face. “Keep talking to me. What day is it?” In all of the first-aid classes, they’d stressed the importance to keeping someone in critical condition conscious as long as possible.
“Um,” Uraraka frowned, swallowing heavily as she tried to think through the pain rolling through her body. “Tuesday?”
“It’s Thursday.” To be fair, she never knew what day it was. “Who am I?”
A dry laugh crackled from her chest as she licked her lips. “Deku?”
“You’re not funny,” he chuckled, ignoring the fear bubbling in his chest. Her skin was slowly blending in with the ash caked against her skin. “My name?”
“Katsuki,” she exhaled slowly feeling her body become weightless.
“What did you eat for breakfast this morning?”
Uraraka closed her eyes, the world feeling unsteady around around her, “I’m tired.”
“Eyes open!” He barked. His palms slipped against her blood soaked skin. “Don’t you start that shit.”
She opened her eyes slowly smiling at him. Her fingers wrapped around his hands. “It’s okay.”
“You better not close your eyes!”
“I just need to sleep,” her chest rattled as she inhaled sharply. “Just a few minutes. I promise.”
“No!” He yelled. Bakugo dropped her hands, returning them around the penetrating wound at her side as he held pressure. “What did you eat this morning?”
“Um,” she whispered, her eyes fell closed for a moment. “I’m so tired.” She couldn’t remember.
He dropped his forehead to her’s. “You ate those frosted little animal cookies this morning, remember?”
Tears leaked from her eyes as a small smile appeared on her face. “Yeah?” She whispered, feeling the pain leave her body.
“Yeah,” he nodded, swallowing back emotion.
Bakugo decided he wouldn’t break in front of her.
If these were her last moments, he was going to make sure Uraraka left feeling comforted and unafraid. “You ate half the box before I told you to put them down,” he chuckled tightly as he felt tears cloud his vision.
Her eyes opened, looking at him with sorrow as the light faded, “I’m sorry.”
“No,” he shook his head. “It’s okay. I’m not mad.”
“Yeah?”
“There! Over there!”
Help was coming, but he couldn’t look away from her. “Of course not, Koko,” he watched as her eyes grow heavy.
A smile flashed on her face at the sound of her nickname. “I love you,” Uraraka whispered in a long exhale.
“You can have as many as you want we get home.” I love you more.

The cause of Endeavor's sudden downfall would be debated for years by scholars, law enforcement, and gossip rags alike.
