Did you know?
Did you know why in european folklore and myth trolls have such a strong connection with bridges? It's kind of strange if you think about it.
They are scandinavian in origin, but appear to have no connection to bridges in their initial conception. During the 9th century, trolls appear to be a sort of nature folk, Prose Edda mentions a troll woman describing her kin as guardians of graves, but there are no mentions of bridges that i could find until the mid-19th century.
What happened between the 9th and 19th centuries with trolls then? Let me tell you. See, i've been a bit unreliable for dramatic effect and occluded a story from the 14th century, which is actually not of directly norse origin, but contains the trolls, and appears to describe the beginning of their relationship with bridges.
In my search for the earliest troll-bridge myth i have stumbled upon a retelling of a translated fragment from a work of Albert Suho, who was a priest from lower saxony (specifically the city of Osnabrück as wikipedia informs me).
It tells a folk-song about a troll, who found friendship with a nixie, which is a kind of norse water shapeshifter dude that plays the fiddle to lure people onto thin ice or leaky boats and drowns them (classic water creature behaviour). The text never refers to the nixie as a nixie (i don't read low german but nothing there seems to refer to it as so either), but i feel pretty confident that it is a nixie, because, well, the fiddle.
So the troll and nixie are besties, but after a disagreement regarding the body of a traveller that died with his foot in the river they go through a messy break up. The nixie think the body is his, since again, his foot was in his waters, but trolls says that the nixie didn't technically cause his death, he just found the guy, and also the traveller has a pretty necklace, and the troll would like to have it. So they break up, and the troll is so bitter it starts chucking rocks into the river, which somehow builds a bridge (trolls aren't known for architecture so i assume it works as kind of a waagh system in warhammer 40k). The bridge is sturdy and chill and also allows the troll to never see the nixie again, since he can just go over the bridge. He also kills a guy on said bridge because he was laughing at his arms?? which kind of gets glossed over. In the end of the song, the troll goes to his family to his mountain home and tells of how cool it is that he never has to see his friend again, and then sits at the bridge being grumpy.
Of course it's just one story, i will leave a link to the questionable source at the bottom, but i really like it as an origin of troll bridge relationship. Also the song has major vibes of troll and nixie being lovers but that might just be me.
Anyway, here's the link: clickityclackity; i hope you enjoyed this foray into the world of germanic folklore.

The FitnessGram™ Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. [beep] A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound. [ding] Remember to run in a straight line, and run as long as possible. The second time you fail to complete a lap before the sound, your test is over. The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, start.
