The problem with 90% of “best ethical alternatives to dollskill”, lists is that they fundamentally misunderstand literally everything about fashion and taste and clothing that is truly stylish. Nobody is replacing their cunty unethical little skirts and dresses and corsets that actually look good with printed leggings and ugly graphic horror tees. Just encourage shopping secondhand, fuck.

“WHAT DO I WEAR TO MY FIRST RAVE?”

this is the most commonly asked question i hear from people who are going to attend their first edm festival/event. 

the only rule is this: THERE ARE NO RULES.

the next thing i tell people is not to stress about their body “not looking good enough” to wear these types of outfits. the edm community is so body positive! i remember for one of my first raves i was so worried that i wasn’t thin enough to wear such little clothing; i threw a mesh shirt over my sparkly bra top because i felt so insecure. flash forward to two or three songs into the first set, i took the mesh shirt right off! not only did i lose any sense of insecurity that i previously had going into the festival, but my body also felt much cooler.

that’s a main reason that you’ll so often see such little clothing being worn at these shows: it is usually HOT. you’re going to be sweating from dancing and being in the crowds, so be sure to dress accordingly. check the weather beforehand too! 

with all that being said, let me break it down for you:

TOPS

most girls usually wear some sort of bra top/crop top. bathing suit tops are also a great option. you can wear them on their own, or throw a cool shirt (mesh ones are super popular) over it too. other options are pasties (yes, this is completely acceptable) or some merch that reps one of your favorite artists!

BOTTOMS

the most popular option are rave shorts/”hotpants”. these can be found on various websites. they are shorter-than-your-average shorts, but come in various styles and coverages so you can pick a pair that make you feel most comfortable. don’t rule out bathing suit bottoms, either. i’ve also re-worn old shorts from my dance/gymnastics days since they’re so stretchy and easy to move in. biker shorts are becoming increasingly trendy as well!

BODYSUITS

this is a great option if you don’t want to wear a two-piece number! i’ve seen these around lots of festivals lately, and so many stores sell really cool ones.

SHOES

i’m going to be doing a whole separate post about what kind of shoes to wear to festivals; it’s a debatable topic. the best answer to the shoe question is to wear ones that are a). already broken into, and b). comfortable to wear throughout a regular day. for me, these are my AF1s. i’ve been wearing them to almost every festival and show for years and i’ve never once complained about my feet hurting. you’ll see a lot of people wearing any old pair of sneakers, especially converse/vans. boots are super popular as well as platform shoes, however, i’ve yet to find a pair that i can do an entire 3-day festival in. 

a pro-tip is also to put sole inserts (such as from dr. scholl’s) into whatever shoes you do end up wearing. trust me, you do not want to risk being uncomfortable-- it’s the worst feeling when you want to enjoy a show!

edm festivals are unlike regular music festivals in that people do not tend to spend tons of money on clothes, decide what to wear months before, and/or judge other people based on their outfits

your body is beautiful in anything that you decide to wear

check the weather before you choose

comfort is key, especially for shoes

accessorize, accessorize, accessorize :)

Listen, the ONLY reason I havent been vocal about what's happening rn is because I've been vocal on platforms where I have reach. I will say this: I completely support BLM. I support black people. I will use my white privilege to shield them in EVERY way. I will stand in front of them. I will be silent to amplify their voices. I will shield them.

Pride started with a fucking riot lead by two trans women of colour. If you think for a goddamn second I'd tolerate any bullshit here, you are sorely fucking mistaken. If you arent livid by the pure debasement of HUMAN RIGHTS then you need to stop and reevaluate. I am white, I have privileges they have NEVER had.

And its fucking SICKENING. I will NEVER claim to know or understand what they have been through. But gods be damned if I will not do everything in my power to stand and fight for them. I've been beaten, I've been threatened, I've been targeted for being vocally LGBT. I have scars and life long memories that will haunt me-- But that does NOT amount to the suffrage they have undergone, it does give me a LITTLE insight into it and all that does is make me want to fight harder for them.

I get it. Tumblr is an escape for most everyone on here. It is for me too. However, you can still support even passively and from a distance. There are so many resources. There are YT videos you can play without ad blocker on that donate and support the protestors! There are important materials that help educate and inform people! Theres so many ways to just spread that information. Just rebageling these posts that contain vital links and information helps! And if you cant settle, if you need time, if you're disabled or anxious, I get it. I understand! But please, you can act passively through the above means and it helps. It's alright to take a step back for your mental health. Do not feel guilty for doing so! I have had to take breaks from social media lately too. But still, rebagel the information from time to time. Circulate it. Make sure its seen.

PLEASE be safe if you join a protest. Write any vital information ON YOUR BODY beneath your clothes. If you need a shield, I know plywood is the go to but a rubbermaid topper, thick foam and 3m adhesive spray is enough. Do NOT bring anything with you that you dont want to possibly lose. LOCK YOUR PHONE WITH A PASSCODE, cops have been known to force people to unlock their phones if it's a biometric lock. BLUR FELLOW PROTESTOR FACES OUT IF VIDEOS. Wear comfortable clothes that HIDE defining features. Cover your tattoos, your hair, and WEAR A MASK. THERE IS STILL A PANDEMIC GOING ON AS WELL. Bring YOUR OWN water and rations, you can bring enough for others too but DO NOT take any from "stashes" you find. Police/white supremacists have been leaving tainted supplies and bricks to incite violence. Watch out for VEST OUTLINES, WHITE ARM BANDS, HANDCUFF IMPRINTS IN POCKETS, etc for undercover police. If you are MACED or TEAR GASSED, try your best NOT to panic. Other protestors WILL help you. Milk, water with baking soda, water will all help these things. Write the information of a law firm participating in the pro bono protest support in your area on your body so another protestor can call them for you if you are arrested. DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES OR LOTION, they will be inherently effected by gassing. WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR IF YOU NEED TO.

For example: I have a heart condition so I have to take medication, i also need to wear a THICK jean vest or something heavy to protect my chest from impacts. I also wear glasses so I need to wear a strap to keep them in place if I have to run or fight.

TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS BEFOREHAND. LIST THEM ON YOUR BODY BENEATH YOUR CLOTHES IF YOU CAN FOR PROTEST MEDICS TO KNOW ABOUT BEFORE TREATING YOU FOR ANY INJURY OBTAINED.

RUN if you need to! Take ANYONE with you. Help your fellow people to escape if escape is necessary! If theres a curfew in place where you live, try to constantly and efficiently move the protest so riot police cant keep up.

I cannot stress this enough: LISTEN to the BLACK LEADERS SPEAKING IF YOU ARE WHITE. This is NOT a fucking free for all party or some shit. You are there to PROTECT THEM with YOUR white privilege. USE IT.
