standalone novel set in the Moral Engines universe

when a small wheeled city is taken over by a rebel faction with a small army of dangerous revenants, a history teacher & the mayor’s son travel to find someone with experience fighting them - and find a young woman who’s grown up battling revenants for entertainment, and offer her an escape

along the way they pick up various unlikely stragglers - including an older mercenary, and an artist

I don’t have Super strong feelings about it; but definitely nostalgia.#it’s a pretty straightforward adventure #with a quirky little cast of characters. adds some interesting things to the world #squid squad?? also casual mentions that there’s some underwater city of octopus people?#I love vespertine and Small Cat….#can you really be a Stalker if you don’t have a small creature to Protect. i think it’s built into the code somwhere #ok the australian character was perhaps like. here is every stereotype. but also I guess that is the kind of humor of these books #when i first heard about this book i was like i hope there’s gay people or at least no romance.#(not for any reason just yknow. i like those things)#not Really either of those but there’s a minor gay SC and NOT a romance between Teen Girl And Teen Boy #just between the older characters (and i guess the boy has an unresolved crush on a SC)#also - much prefer unlikely crews/found family (are they at that level yet?) that is like. significant variety in ages and stuff like this
