To dream, or not to dream

It starts with a slight distraction. You look at the clock: 12:00 midnight. You told yourself that you would sleep tonight. You promised yourself you’d finally get some sleep. Some actual sleep. A full night. 

One episode, 

One video,

One phone conversation, 

One song,

One last look through your social media.

You finally get the nerve to look at the clock again: 1:45 am.

Fuck. Okay, now. Now is as good a time as any.

You toss. You turn. You sigh. You get up and get a drink of water. You get up to pee. You get back in bed.

Your head hits the pillow and your brain starts talking.

Did I remember to do that thing? What would the world be like if...? Why did I do that when I was 12? When will I finally have that nice summer body?

You toss. You turn. You sigh. You throw pillows. You pet the cat. You turn on the TV. 2:59 am.

Half the night is gone. 

You close your eyes as tight as you can. You want to cry. You bury your face in the pillow. 

3:30 am.

You turn on the light. You get up and get a drink of water. You pick up a book you don’t want to read. You turn off the light.

Try again.

You toss. You turn. You sigh. The cat jumps off the bed in frustration. 

4:45 am.

It’s almost light outside. You have to be awake in four hours. What were you thinking?

You don’t feel tired. You feel fine. But your eyes are heavy and your chest feels full. You need sleep. But you can’t. 

This is nothing new. This has been happening your whole very short adult life. This is called Insomnia and it’s almost killing you.

But you know one good thing will come from it. 

Tomorrow night will be the best night’s sleep you’ll get in a long time.
