In the recent Kerala flood , the death toll neared 400 when I was writing this article. No doubt, people of kerala, specially the youth, used their best skills on social media and ground ,proved themselves that they are responsible citizens. The more interesting one was, people who were branded as useless for the society , became more useful in the rescue operations.

In the recent flood in Western Japan, 200 people became victims to the fury in the midst of worst weather disaster in 36 years of Japan history.  Since July, intense heat and  water shortages raised alarm for the outbreak of diseases.  People living on mountain slopes and flood plains , numbering 269,672 households has no access to water.  When there is less access to drinking water,then there is less fluid in the body and chances of more heart strokes. Moreover, people are already under stress and depression. There was no grudge or complaint for the people living in relief camps , in stead , they found solutions by themselves. There were only a few portable fans at the evacuation centers, but they tried to cool themselves with paper fans.  Since Japanese are good like skills, their wisdom work at problem solving.

In Kerala, most of the affected areas are plain except some hills and slopes in a few districts whereas most of the Western Japan have hills and slopes and mostly  devastated areas in the recent flood were provinces like Hiroshima, Okayama and Ehime.  In Kerala, more than 10,00,000 people took shelter in the relief camp whereas in Western Japan,  the people living in relief camp reduced to just 7000 only within a week time. About 400 homes were damaged and 10,000 homes were flooded . In Kerala , it is yet to ascertain the extend of damage and flooded homes.

In the Western Japan, electricity supplies were cut off at about 51,000 homes in six prefecture and one should remember that only in Hiroshima, the population goes more than 12 lakhs.  In Japan ferrying supplies to convenient stores and retailers were treated as emergency vehicles. In Kerala, the cargoes got piled up awaiting customs clearance for many days.  

The flood situation in Kerala worsened when the Idukki Hydel Project opened the five gates and lifted the shutters of over two dozen dams under the pressure of unprecedented downpour after 1923.  Lots of encroachments across the banks of many rivers also became a huge hindrance for the crisis management.  And many new houses have come in these areas and also flourishing of agriculture activities  adding more problems in the list for the disaster management. Land mafias have been swallowing the beauty  of Kerala, gradually since last several decades under the nose of politicians, bureaucrats and the government.  Kerala and India have to learn from the disaster management technology of Japan, a disaster= prone nation saved  5000 villagers from flooding in Indonesia. India has a long standing relation with Japan and India is yet to explore and gain more skills from Japan in the area of disaster management. In the case of disaster, Japanese handle the situation with a sense of emergency and they play a very important roles in protecting the lives of civilians.

No doubt, the youth of Kerala did a wonderful job and took challenges in their hands and solved the puzzles .  They really used their swimming ,rappelling , and diving skills  in saving people’s lives and many youth explored new avenues through social media and digital process to monitor food and location management.  The Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Kerala with their team tried to do their best and the best thing happened in Kerala was the unity of the people living in Kerala ,outside the states and international Indians and a lesson for Indians that not to repeat the mistakes happened in Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir.  My gratitude also goes to my elder brother’s family members , Sujit P. S. and Anup Aravind Menon for having sleepless nights in helping the  people in the relief camps in Eranakulam area.

The Malayalam actor has won the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Character Actor (Female) for her role in ‘Vasanthi’

Swasika Vijay has not yet come to terms with the fact that she is now a Kerala State Film award winner. She was adjudged the Best Character Actor (Female) at the 50th Kerala State Film Awards announced recently for her titular role in Rahman Brothers’ Vasanthi, which also won the awards for the best film and the best script.

With compliments still pouring in, Swasika is on cloud nine. “Until the winners were announced we had no expectations for the film, let alone an award for me. I was thrown off balance when my name was announced. It seems unreal,” says Swasika.

Vasanthi is the journey of a woman, an orphan who leaves home only to be caught in the ups and downs of life. The narrative is about the men she encounters, her relationships and, finally, her emergence as a survivor. “She becomes strong, emotionally and mentally. The movie is experimental in that the story is told through a creative blend of theatre and cinema,” she adds.

Swasika heard the story in 2016 from actor Siju Wilson, also the producer of the movie. The shoot was completed in 2018 itself. After a preview show early this year, it was ready for a theatre release when the pandemic forced cinemas to shut down.

Getting recognised

Familiar to the Malayali audience as a serial artiste, television anchor, dancer, stage performer and model, Swasika feels that the recognition will help her in the long run. Even though she has been around in the industry for nearly a decade now, character roles have eluded her. Also, it has been a back and forth journey between cinema and television. “The award has given me the validation that I always wanted as an artiste. It ought to clear the doubts about my work,” she says.

A native of Muvattupuzha, Swasika, a dancer, had set her eyes on cinema. “My family has zero connection with the entertainment industry. But they supported me whole-heartedly when they realised that I was serious about acting,” she says. Eventually she had her début, that too in Tamil, in Vaigai (2009). A few Tamil movies later, she started working in Malayalam. Among her early projects were Prabhuvinte Makkal, Cinema Company and Ayalum Njaanum Thammil.

Later, she switched over to television. “While the mini-screen is considered a stepping stone to movies, I took the other way round. I was even advised not to do television because once you are labelled a serial artiste, it would be difficult to get into cinema. They were right to some extent,” she says.

Although she got a good role in Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan (2016), the movies that followed didn’t help her career. In the meantime she became a favourite of the television audience through serials such as Chinthavishtayaya Seetha and Seetha. “I had almost given up hope of getting meaty roles in cinema. That was when, last year, I became part of two big projects — Porinju Mariyam Jose and Ittimaani Made In China,” she says.

The artiste recalls how she lost a few roles because of her looks. She recounts how a “reputed female actor” commented on a television show about “my acne and long nose” and how she didn’t look like a heroine. “I was in class eleven then and those remarks devastated me. I had my battle with pimples for a long time. However, after a point I stopped bothering about it. Now, at the age of 28, I keep doing my job with the same pimpled face and long nose! In fact, in Vasanthi, I haven’t used make-up in several scenes,” she laughs.

She will soon be shooting for a film with State award-winner Suraj Venjaramoodu, which will be directed by M Padmakumar. She has also been doing short films and is currently anchoring the show Red Carpet on Amrita TV.

Swasika admits that she is inspired by the career trajectory of artistes such as Asha Sharath and Lena, who’ve successfully forayed into cinema from television. “I don’t know if I will get the kind of roles they have done or are still doing. But I am hoping for the best,” she signs off.

He saw issues such as farmer payments, transportation, and marketability of milk products were growing in the region's dairy sector. This inspired him to start Heritage Foods in 1992. Launched with an initial investment of Rs 80 lakh, Naidu brought in his wife Nara Bhuvaneshwari and dairy executives to take things forward. Heritage Foods then went on to work with lakhs of farmers over the years. It only retained the tenets of the Amul model that were working, such as eliminating middlemen, procuring milk directly from farmers, paying them well, processing the milk, and selling it to end consumers. The company now claims a significant presence in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Odisha, NCR Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Aadvik Foods Having spent years in their respective jobs, Hitesh Rathi and Shrey Kumar decided to explore the organic food market and bridge the gap within the farm-to-table model. They built on their idea of processing camel milk and Aadvik Foods came into existence. One of the first Indian brands to process camel milk, it started with just one SKU, and now deals in 40 SKUs, including soaps, chocolates, flavoured milk, moisturiser, face wash, facial scrub, day cream, and body butter. The company deals directly with camel breeders of Rajasthan and Gujarat, not only creating a sustainable source of income for them but also helping them take care of animals and maintaining population. The founders have, till now, worked with more than 100 camel breeders. Though they had a slow start because there were no initial takers for this product, today, Aadvik Foods clocks a total of Rs 4 crore due to its immense health benefits, claim the founders. Desi Farms To address the problem of adulterated milk and sell unprocessed milk to customers, Pune-based Prateek Gupta (33) launched SNA Milk & Milk Products in 2016. Through his venture, Gupta is selling healthy, natural, and unprocessed milk and milk products across Pune and Mumbai under the brand ‘Desi Farms'. A proud owner, he says: “Our plant is equipped with top machineries and we process one lakh litres of milk per day. To ensure deliverance on our goals, we maintain rigorous inspection on the milk quality, from the time of procurement to the final dispatch.” Desi Farms currently has 13 exclusive operational outlets in Pune and Mumbai. The company handles morning home deliveries and over-the-counter selling through these outlets. At present, Desi Farms sells over 30 products including A2 milk, whole cow and whole buffalo milk, ghee, paneer, yogurt, lassi, khava, basundi, chass, shrikhand, bread, eggs and more. Mr Dairy Before the advent of the White Revolution, there was a business model similar to Amul’s that was carried out in the 1960s by Nanak Singh, who started Nanak Milk in 1962 in Delhi. His grandson, Tushar, now describes how his grandfather used to take milk from farmers and sell it to major cities in North India. “He was also supplying to Nestle, Delhi Milk Scheme, and the Indian Army, and we continued to work with the same business model till 2001 until we started noticing cases of milk adulteration from the farmers’ side,” he says. This made it increasingly difficult for Nanak to keep a check on quality. Hence, he had to shut down the milk business in 2001. After 18 years, Nanak’s goal of supplying quality milk took the form of Mr Dairy, when Tushar decided to take over the reins of the family legacy. In May 2019, with self-funded capital of Rs 7 crore, Tushar started selling A2 milk, which is produced by only some Indian indigenous cow breeds, and is considered far superior in quality, taste, and freshness. Today, the 60-member Mr Dairy team has recorded approximately Rs 40 lakh-Rs 43 lakh sales per month since May from its range of whole milk, skimmed milk, and ghee. NEW DELHI/KOCHI:  Seated on the last row of the plane, Muhammed Junaid sensed something was amiss when Air India Express flight IX 1344 from Dubai was jerked around by strong winds as it approached the southern Indian city of Kozhikode late on Friday.

After an aborted attempt, the aircraft swung around and touched down on the runway, said Junaid, who like many others onboard worked in the Middle East but was forced to return home when his salary halved because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead of slowing down, Junaid said, the Boeing-737 appeared to pick up speed, overshooting the runway slickened by heavy rains, hurtling down a sharp slope and breaking in two.

“All these things happened in 15 seconds,” he told Reuters by phone on Saturday.

Eighteen of the 190 passengers and crew, including both pilots, died, officials said on Saturday, in India’s worst passenger aircraft accident since 2010. Sixteen people were severely injured.

But Junaid and several other passengers, seated at the back of the aircraft, walked away from the wreckage at Calicut International Airport near Kozhikode almost unscathed.

By midnight, Junaid said, he had driven himself home to Elathur, an hour from the airport.

Only his head was sore from bumping into the ceiling and his lips bled a little after he bit into them. “Nothing happened to me, thank God,” he said.

ESCAPING A PANDEMIC

Junaid, 25, moved to Dubai three years ago to work as an accountant at a trading firm.

The only breadwinner in his four-member family, he would send home around half the 4,000 dirhams ($1,000) he made a month, he said.

But after the pandemic took hold this year, his firm’s business dried up and he was only paid half his salary from May.

“My boss told me to take two or three months’ leave and come back when everything is OK,” he said.

Finding a way home was not easy because India had closed its international borders in March. Junaid said he registered for the Indian government’s repatriation flight program in May but did not hear back for two months.

On Aug. 1, he was told flights would be available between Dubai and Kerala state, where Kozhikode is located, during a two-week period.

He paid 880 dirhams for Friday’s flight.

“I was coming back to India after almost two years, so I was very excited to meet my family and everyone,” he said.

CABIN CREW

A few seats ahead of Junaid, 28-year-old Muhammad Shafaf was also returning home from Dubai after spending seven months there unsuccessfully looking for a job.

When the aircraft careened off the runway and plunged off a hill, Shafaf said he thought it was the end, fearing a fire would break out and engulf him.

“A cabin crew from the back assured us that there was no need to worry about a fire. She said that the engine was off,” said Shafaf, who suffered only bruises on his nose and feet.

As he sat dazed near the tail of the wrecked aircraft, Junaid, too, said he remembered cabin crew calming down passengers and helping those scrunched between mangled seats.

After a 45-minute wait, during which emergency workers helped passengers out of the wrecked front of the plane, Junaid and the rest at the back were helped down.

Now resting at home and awaiting a coronavirus test, Junaid said he wants to stay away from aircraft.

“I am really afraid,” he said. “I don’t want to fly again.”

Coronavirus Outbreak: How do we mitigate the impact of gray rhino events in the future?— Part 3

The Dutch sea captain Willem de Vlamingh never imagined in his wildest dreams that black swans could exist. He never saw or heard of one in Europe. In January 1697 he and his crew sailed up a river, later named Swan River, in Southwestern Australia to explore it. And much to their utter amazement they became the first Europeans to see black swans.

“Black swan” events are extremely rare and highly improbable events. They share three characteristics:

1) they are unpredictable

2) they have a massive impact

3) post the event, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random and more predictable.

Is the COVID-19 outbreak a black swan event?

Here are three reasons why it is not an unpredictable event.

First, there have been more than a dozen serious epidemics, many of them worldwide, in the last 100 years (see Box 5). The Spanish flu and smallpox killed 50 million people each. Eighteen million Indians died of Spanish flu. HIV killed 30 million people. The Asian flu and Hong Kong flu killed at least a million people each. But they have faded quickly from public memory.

Second, a paper is written by four Chinese scientists titled, Bat Coronaviruses in China, published on 2 March 2019, specifically warned, “it is highly likely that future SARS- or MERS-like coronavirus outbreaks will originate from bats, and there is an increased probability that this will occur in China. Two bat origin CoVs caused large-scale epidemics in China over fourteen years, highlighting the risk of a future bat CoV outbreak in this nation. Therefore, the investigation of bat coronaviruses becomes an urgent issue for the detection of early warning signs, which in turn minimizes the impact of such future outbreaks in China.” The Chinese government, which funded this study through its science academies, did not heed the warning it carried.

Third, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, speaking at the World Government Summit, Dubai on 12 February 2018, warned the world, “A devastating epidemic could start in any country at any time and kill millions of people because we are still not prepared. The world remains vulnerable.” The world heard him but did not listen to him.

COVID-19 is not a black swan event. It is a “gray rhino” event, one that is a highly probable and with a potentially large impact. Gray rhino events can be seen in advance because of their size and the early warning they give. Yet, they are ignored. India has had many big gray rhino events in the past.

Recent Indian gray rhino events

India’s record of handling gray rhino events is poor and leaves doubts about how it will handle the coronavirus outbreak. There have been occasions though when it has rolled up its sleeves and done a particularly good job like in the Machilipatnam cyclone or what Kerala is doing now to control COVID-19.

1984 Bhopal gas tragedy: Union Carbide made Sevin, a carbamate group pesticide, in its Bhopal plant. Soon after the plant went into production, Sevin lost market space to the next generation pesticides and the company slipped into losses. Consequently, safety and environmental management standards in the plant declined.

Between 1981-84, the plant had a series of accidents (see Box 6). This prompted journalist Raj Kumar Keshwani to write three articles lamenting on the plant’s poor safety conditions, and warning Bhopal that it was on the brink of a disaster. A state government minister responded saying, “The Carbide plant is not some small pebble that can be picked up and put elsewhere.”

Forty-two tonnes of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) leaked on the cold winter night of 2 December 1984, killing about 8,000 persons immediately. Another 17,000 died subsequently of chronic toxic effects.

1999 Ersama cyclone: Odisha is hit by a severe cyclone almost every year, and by a super cyclone once every few years. A super cyclone hit Ersama block in coastal Orissa on 29 October 1999. Three 10-metre high storm surges swept everything in their path for up to 20 km inland, killing about 50,000 persons.

2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami: Indonesia is frequently rocked by earthquakes and the offshore ones sometimes generate tsunamis. On 26 December 2004, a 9.1 magnitude offshore earthquake near Sumatra, Indonesia generated tsunami waves that rose to 9 m before they hit coasts of 14 countries along the Indian Ocean rim, and wreaked enormous destruction. About 250,000 persons died, including 10,000 on the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts.

  Information failures increase lives lost

Information plays a critical role in minimizing the probability of a gray rhino event from becoming a disaster. Information throughputs have five stages—generation, transmission, interpretation, access, and use. An information failure at any of these stages increase the probability of a hazard hit converting into a disaster.

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami disaster in India was an information generation failure. India did not install seabed sensors in the Bay of Bengal to detect tsunami pressure waves. It was also an information transmission failure as the Indian government was informed about the tsunami soon after it hit the Andaman Islands (see information timeline), which lie close to Sumatra. It took another two hours before the tsunami hit India’s east coast, which was adequate to evacuate fisherfolk inland. Failure to do that was a criminal act of negligence which cost India 10,000 lives.

The Bhopal gas tragedy was an information access failure. People in Bhopal were sleeping when a highly toxic MIC gas cloud formed at the Carbide plant and drifted slowly downwind towards JP Nagar, Chola Khenchi slums and areas further south. Being heavier than air, the gas cloud hugged the ground, and remained concentrated as the prevailing low wind speed dispersed it very slowly. People woke up and ran to save themselves. But they ran downwind and remained in the gas cloud, inhaling a large amount of toxic MIC gas.

Had they known that they should move perpendicular to the wind direction, the quickest way to get out of a gas cloud, and cover their nose and mouths with a wet cloth as MIC is soluble in water, many thousands of lives may have been saved, and injury would have been less. Not a single Carbide worker died on the as they were aware that running upwind and away from the gas cloud was the best way to save themselves.

    The Ersama cyclone disaster was an information use failure. The National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) provided the Odisha government with satellite pictures of the cyclone’s path for 3 days prior to the cyclone making landfall. Yet, the Odisha government did not use this information. If the coastal population had been evacuated, most of the 50,000 people who lost their lives would have lived.

There are other examples of hazard strike events that became disasters due to information failures. One of them is the 7.5 magnitude (on the Richter scale) Bhuj earthquake that occurred on 26 January 2001. Hundreds of buildings collapsed in several cities in Gujarat killing about 25,000 people and causing a financial loss of Rs 25,000-50,000 crores.

Had the buildings been built to Bureau of Indian Standards (ISI) codes for earthquake resistant structures, far fewer people would have died. BIS codes were available for engineered and non-engineered buildings but were not used, making this event an information use failure.

Bhuj is in a Zone 5 (most earthquake prone) seismic region, making it a high-risk area. Damage to Gujarat Housing Board colonies built to ISI standards, was minimal, but Shikhar Towers, Himgiri Apartments, and 170 other buildings in Ahmadabad crashed as they were not built to ISI standards.

In a quake of similar magnitude that shook Seattle soon after the Bhuj quake happened, only 3 persons died as structures in that city conformed to building standards for earthquakes.

  Lack of emergency response plans and action increase loss of lives

Six elements that constitute emergency response plans and actions (ERPA)—event prediction, warning, hardware and facilities, risk avoidance action by public, emergency response plan (ERP), and the emergency response actions (ERA)—if in place, minimize loss of life when natural or man-made hazards strike. Each missing element increases the probability of the event converting into a disaster and causing great loss of life. A comparison of two cyclones—the 1990 Machilipatnam cyclone that hit the Andhra coast and the 1999 Ersama cyclone—illustrates this point (see Box 7).

Prior information (event prediction) about a hazardous event—its nature, magnitude, hit location and time, lead time between event prediction and hit—helps save lives. Using satellites, IMD tracked the Machilipatnam and Ersama cyclone for several days before they made landfall, and predicted their intensity, landfall location and time accurately. Event predictions for both these cyclones was good.

An effective warning before a hazard hit must fulfil 6 criteria—it should come in time, reach everyone, be appropriate for the event, be unambiguous about the action people should take, sound credible, and be specific to the risk posed by the impending event. The Machilipatnam warning met all these criteria.

The Ersama cyclone warning met the first 3 criteria—it came in time, reached most people on the coast and was appropriate to the event. But it failed the next 3 criteria as it was ambiguous, lacked credibility and was vague. The warning bundled weather and emergency-action information, creating doubt whether people should use their judgement or follow instructions. The warning for the Ersama cyclone was remarkably like the one for a lower intensity cyclone that hit the Ganjam coast 10 days before the Ersama cyclone occurred. As the Ganjam cyclone did not cause much damage or death, going by the similarity between the Ersama and Ganjam cyclone warnings, people thought that Ersama cyclone would be like the Ganjam one. When in doubt people prefer status quo; they stayed home during the Ersama cyclone and were swept away by its giant waves.

The chances of taking risk-avoidance/ mitigation action are higher when people know the risks they face and the choices they have. People in Machilipatnam were ready to evacuate their villages as they had cyclone emergency drills earlier. People in Ersama were not put through such drills and therefore were less aware of the danger they faced and the action they should take to save themselves.

The infrastructure and hardware that Odisha had was highly inadequate--23 cyclone shelters, a police wireless system that died when the cyclone worked itself into a fury, and no backup communication system. Andhra Pradesh had 1,041 cyclone shelters, a police wireless system that could withstood 250 km/hr windspeeds, and a backup active ham radio network.

Odisha had no emergency response plan (ERP) for cyclones and therefore no emergency response action happened in Ersama. Two lakh persons were kept safe in Machilipatnam by evacuating them.

The consequence—50,000 persons died in the Ersama cyclone, even though it happened 9 years after the Machilipatnam cyclone. Less than 1,000 persons died in the Machilipatnam cyclone.

Information failure and lack of emergency response plans will affect India in COVID-19 pandemic

A critical information failure in the COVID-19 outbreak in India is the lack of information on the total number of cases. This can be acquired through extensive testing and good surveillance. But on both counts, India’s effort falls below the curve. When cases are detected at an early stage, they can be isolated immediately and treated. This minimizes the time they are in contact with the people, thus reducing infection spread. India has an information generation failure in its COVID-19 control programme.

Several elements of the emergency response to the coronavirus outbreak in India have failed either partially or entirely.

Event prediction: India was forewarned of the coronavirus outbreak in general way in the form of knowledge of previous virus outbreaks, WHO DG’s warning that a viral epidemic could happen anytime, and the Chinese paper on the possibility of a coronavirus outbreak. India should have had a viral outbreak response plan but does not seem to have one.

The Indian government would have become aware of the coronavirus outbreak in China by early-January 2020. Though there may have been some confusion about the possibility of human to human transmission till 21 January, this was dispelled by the last week of January when WHO declared a global health emergency.

Warning: India had about eight weeks of warning time to prepare before the case numbers started going up sharply towards end-March. Kerala prepared for a coronavirus outbreak from January, but the rest of India did not.

Risk avoidance action by people: As people’s understanding of the risk that coronavirus poses, and the actions they need to take to stay safe is sketchy, their response has been varied. While most people are willing to live with the lockdown, migrants want to return to their villages. Some resistance was visible in Surat in the second week of April when migrants rioted as they wanted transport to return to their villages. Physical distancing is difficult for slum dwellers, and for many ordinary people it is an alien concept.

Infrastructure and facilities: India’s public health system is weak. Isolation and ICU beds, ventilators, doctors, and nursing staff are less than what is required for a large COVID-19 outbreak.

Emergency response plan: The only visible document is the ‘Containment Plan.’ It was prepared in the first week of April and covers plans only for local transmission. Plans for community transmission and epidemics have either not been prepared yet or are not available in public domain.

Emergency response action: India’s response action can best be described as jerky. The way the lockdown was declared gives the impression that the lack of preparedness and the enormity of the problem may have made the government panic. No thought was given to how migrants would respond to a sudden lockdown announcement, and the beating the economy would take because of the break in the supply chain of almost all goods and services, the loss of income to farmers, unorganized labour and self-employed. The steps after lifting the lockdown do not seem to have been thought through either.

India’s actions give the impression that it is playing it by the ear and “muddling through,” which is not the best way to handle a health emergency. But India is not alone in doing this. It has the US, GB and many other countries keeping it company.

Box 6: Series of accidents in the Union Carbide plant, Bhopal, 1981-84

In 1981, a worker was splashed with phosgene. He ripped off his mask in panic, inhaling a large amount of phosgene gas. He died 72 hours later.

In January 1982, 24 workers exposed to phosgene were hospitalized. None of the workers had been ordered to wear protective masks.

In February 1982, an MIC leak affected 18 workers.

In August 1982, an engineer came into contact with liquid MIC, resulting in 30% body burns.

In October 1982, there was a leak of MIC, methyl carbaryl chloride, chloroform, and hydrochloric acid. In attempting to stop the leak, the MIC supervisor suffered intensive chemical burns and two other workers were severely exposed to the gases.

During 1983 and 1984, leaks of the following substances regularly took place in the MIC plant: MIC, chlorine, monomethylamine, phosgene, and carbon tetrachloride, sometimes in combination.

Reports issued by scientists within the Union Carbide Corporation months before the Dec.2 incident warned of the possibility of an accident almost identical to that which occurred in 1984. The reports were ignored and never reached senior staff.

Union Carbide was warned by American experts who visited the plant after 1981 of the potential of a "runaway reaction” in the MIC storage tank; local Indian authorities warned the company of problems on several occasions from 1979 onwards. Again, these warnings were not heeded.

What is a coronavirus?

Coronavirus term refers to a large group of viruses or families of viruses that cause a wide range of illnesses and infections in humans and several animals including birds, mammals like camels, cats and bats. Due to their crown-like projections on the surfaces, coronaviruses got their name. The virus resembles like a crown when viewed under an electron microscope. “Corona” in Latin means “halo” or “crown”.

Coronavirus can infect both animals and people and can cause illnesses of the respiratory tract. The infections can range from the common cold to dangerous conditions like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, which sickened thousands of people around the world and killed nearly 800 — during an outbreak in 2003. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, is also caused by a coronavirus.

How is it transmitted?

Most respiratory viruses are transmitted through coughing and sneezing, but troubling new evidence suggests people who are infected with the new virus may be spreading it before they even know that they have any symptoms. It has now become clear there is a significant and sustained transmission from person to person.

How coronavirus disease spread?

While coughing and sneezing, an infection spread into the air and spread the virus. While touching or shaking hands with an infected person can also pass the virus. Making in contact with a surface or object that has a virus and while touching nose, eyes or mouth.

How to prevent an infection

Regular hand washing During coughing and sneezing, cover mouth and nose. Properly cooked meat and eggs. Avoid contact from the person showing symptoms of respiratory illness. Therefore, we can say that there is no proper cure and treatments including taking care of yourself and over-the-counter (OTC) medication. Do proper rest and avoid overexertion. Drink enough water. Avoid smoking and smoky areas. Take medicine to reduce pain and fever. Use a clean humidifier or cool mist vaporizer.

Where did the new coronavirus outbreak start?

On Jan. 8, The New York Times reported that Chinese researchers had identified a new coronavirus as the pathogen behind a mysterious illness that had sickened 59 people in Wuhan. The cases were linked to a market that sold live fish, animals, and birds. The market was later shut down and disinfected. Past outbreaks of similar illnesses, including SARS, also are believed to have emerged from live animal markets. The coronavirus that causes MERS is transmitted to humans by camels.

Bats are considered a possible source, because they have evolved to coexist with many viruses, including coronaviruses. But it is very possible the virus was transmitted from bats to an intermediate animal, and then to humans.

Is there a test for the virus? What is the treatment?

There is a diagnostic test that can tell if you are infected. It was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on genetic information about the virus provided by the Chinese authorities.

The main treatment for coronavirus is supportive care, including making sure the patient is getting enough oxygen, and using a ventilator to push air into the lungs if necessary, Dr. Vaishampayan said. Patients should rest and drink plenty of fluids “while the immune system does its job and heals itself,” she said. No drugs have been approved for any coronavirus diseases, including the Wuhan coronavirus, though an antiviral medication called remdesivir appears to be effective in animals and was used to treat a patient in Washington State.

Chinese officials are also experimenting with at least one other H.I.V. drug to treat the infection.

How long will it take to develop a vaccine?

A coronavirus vaccine is still months away — and perhaps years. With each new outbreak, scientists typically have to start from scratch. After the SARS outbreak in 2003, it took researchers about 20 months to get a vaccine ready for human trials

Recent news on Coronavirus

The death toll from the monthlong coronavirus outbreak has continued to climb, rising to 811. New cases have surged by double-digit percentages in the past 11 days, with no sign of a slowdown.

More people have now died in this epidemic than in the severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, outbreak of 2002-2003 in mainland China. During that outbreak, 349 people died.

The new figures from China’s Health Commission on Wednesday showed that 65 people died on Tuesday and that 3,887 more people had been infected. So far, 24,324 people have been infected.

Health experts say the death toll is likely to rise because of the large number of infections. The mortality rate of the coronavirus, about 2 percent so far, appears to be far lower than SARS, which has a mortality rate of about 10 percent.

Epidemics caused by other members of the coronavirus family, SARS and MERS, have had high death rates: 10 percent for SARS, and about 35 percent for MERS

Health care workers are particularly vulnerable. At a hospital in Seoul, South Korea, in 2015, one man with MERS transmitted it to 82 patients.

What are health authorities doing to contain the virus?

China has taken drastic actions to bar people from leaving affected areas, though 5 million people departed Wuhan alone before the restrictions went into effect.

Residents have been told to wear masks in public to prevent the spread of the disease. Two new hospitals for coronavirus patients are being erected; the first opened on Monday.

Governments around the world have been screening incoming passengers from China for signs of illness, and some have gone further, barring entry to people from China. Russia and Mongolia have closed most of their borders with China. Australia said it will evacuate citizens from Wuhan and quarantine them for 14 days on Christmas Island.

C.D.C. teams are also providing assistance with state health investigations of infections, including contact-tracing. C.D.C. teams have also offered to send public health experts to China to help with the investigation and containment efforts.

Coronavirus in India: First confirmed case in Kerala

On 30 January, the Union ministry of health and family in an official statement said a student from Kerala, who was studying at Wuhan University and travelled to India, has tested positive for the coronavirus. Further, the ministry stated that the patient is kept in isolation and is being closely monitored.

News agency PTI told that in Kerala, one person each from Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, and Malappuram and three from Ernakulam district have been kept in isolation wards of various health centres.

Several people are showing symptoms of coronavirus and have been quarantined in different cities of India including Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. According to PTI, till Monday (27 January, 2020), a total of 33,552 passengers arrived in India from China in 155 flights that have been screened. Three patients are also kept in Isolation Ward of Delhi’s RML Hospital for a few days but now it is confirmed that tests are negative for Coronavirus.

As a precautionary measure, thermal screening has been extended to 21 airports in India including New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad Kochi, Gaya, Guwahati, Vizag, Varanasi, and Goa.

In the midst of this, an Indian doctor from Tamil Nadu in Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine has claimed to have found a ‘herbal’ cure to the virus. So far, there has been no cure found to the disease by any scientists, and the only progress made is that a vaccine is being developed, but it may not be available for another year.
