The highest-ever picked Slovakian in the NHL, Slafkovsky was the youngest player at the 2022 Olympic men's ice hockey tournament and was the youngest player to score at the Olympics since Eddie Olczyk in 1984. i see a new username has dropped! love it. also where did you get your header? love that too!
thank you!! the username is inspired by a love letter Wilfred Owen wrote to Siegfried Sassoon on Nov. 5th, 1917, and as we well know WW1 is closely tied to hockey. (Nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau...)

[Alt ID: Know that since mid-September, when you still regarded me as a tiresome little knocker on your door, I held you as Keats + Christ + Elijah + my Colonel + my father-confessor + Amenophis IV in profile. What's that mathematically? In effect it is this: that I love you, dispassionately, so much, so very much, dear fellow, that the blasting little smile you wear on reading this can't hurt me in the least. If you consider what the above Names have severally done for me, you will know what you are doing. You did not light me: I was always a mad comet; but you have fixed me. I spun around you a satellite for a month, but I shall swing out soon, a dark star in the orbit where you will blaze.]
Also, the Fort Wayne Komets, after the original six nhl teams and the hershey bears, are one of the professional hockey teams in north america to play the longest in the same city with the same name continuously! (1952)
Fort Wayne, IN the closest thing to a hometown team I'll get.
The header was made by @/gustavlindstrom for one of Barzal's previous birthdays (and who I now see has remade as @/doubleminor). I have their original post in my queue <3

To you from failing hands we throw the torch be yours to hold it high
Nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau à vous toujours de le porter bien haut
It is a passage from the classic World War I poem In Flanders Fields, written in May 1915 by Canadian army officer, physician and poet John McCrae, a lieutenant colonel who fought, wrote and died in the Great War, succumbing to pneumonia in France in 1918.
Since 1952, the passage has been displayed above the dressing-room stalls of the Canadiens. It was put there by then-general manager Frank Selke Sr., who saw a profound meaning in McCrae’s words for his hockey club, then coached by Dick Irvin Sr.
“The notion of throwing or passing the torch is not only an aspirational concept,” Dryden said. “It’s true. We all pass the torch to anybody who comes next. We do it as parents, as our parents did for us. We do it with co-workers.
“Those who set a certain standard and generated a certain expectation – of course, that’s what this is. The Canadiens decide to do it in not just a conceptual way, but in a visible, ceremonial way.”

Great post for the day. @Regranned from @thewardoll - It is the Soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. × "To you from failing hands we throw the torch be yours to hold it high”“Nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau à vous toujours de le porter bien haut” × The torch of freedom is now ours. Fight for it. Fight hard. At all costs. Hold fast to our nation's values and freedoms, and let no one take them from us. × #lestweforget #remembranceday #canadianforces - #regrann

amateur versus professional sport...
amateur sport has a high entry barrier and is therefore some amount of élitiste and the market function of professional sport seems a way to democratize this, but the market always corrupts its host.
obviously the true answer is socialism and hindering the despoiling effects of the market, but I am compelled by this dynamic and the reality of sport for the love of it, and sport to its sublime expression sold as spectacle.
it is also true that competition breeds innovation; warfare breeds efficiency and technological innovation. there is scarce elsewhere these two are more closely married. nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau, à vous toujours de le porter bien haut.
