Heyy! Please, go ahead, I'm glad to hear my art makes you happy. And sure, I can share some ideas I have about Norway during that time! But I didn't know what to draw for this prompt, will you forgive me?

A little history lesson is probably in place. Norway was a mighty kingdom during the Middle Ages; having overseas territories and the mainland extending all the way to the Kola Peninsula and parts of modern-day Sweden. But by the 14th century, the Scandinavian royal families were extremely intermingled. After the Fairhair dynasty's male lineage died out in 1319, the throne of Norway passed to Magnus VII, who in the same year became elected as king of Sweden as well, merging the two kingdoms into a personal union briefly - until Magnus' sons inherited their separate kingdoms. Magnus' younger son, Haakon VI, inherited Norway as his realm and ended up marrying the Danish princess Margaret, who'd eventually unite all the Scandinavian kingdoms under one crown and form the Kalmar Union in 1397.

However, earlier in 1349, the Black Death arrived in Norway through trading ports and hit the country devastatingly, killing over 60% of the population. Notably, the plague hit all classes of society, even the nobility and clergy. As a result, many powerful Norwegian noble families died out, straining Norway's position among the European powers. But perhaps more devastatingly to the nobles, farmsteads, if not entire villages, around the kingdom died out as a result of the plague, weakening rent and tax revenue. All of this left the Norwegian monarchy weakened in terms of manpower, noble support, defense, and economic power.

Though Norwegians rebelled a few times against the Danish-favored policies during the Kalmar Union, the Norwegian population and the Council of State were still too weak to secede from it. Sweden left the union in 1521, but the Norwegians couldn't do the same, due to their military inferiority to Denmark at the time. During the reformation battles, King Christian III orchestrated an invasion of Norway in 1537 and incorporated the country as a puppet kingdom under Denmark.

"The diminished Norwegian nobility was not able to protect the political rights of Norway in the Kalmar Union and the military power was lost to Denmark who used mercenaries from Germany; the Norwegian merchant class lost their power of the Norwegian economy to the German merchants of the Hanseatic League who established themselves in Bergen; and the dead Norwegian officials were replaced by German and Danish officials appointed to administer Norway for Denmark; all of which has been described as the decline of Norway under the Danish dominance of the Kalmar Union." [x]

And on that note...

I think all of this historical context about the country could be reflected in Sigurd's (Norway) character. His horrible health condition could explain his role shifting in the family, which left him in Magnus' (Denmark) and Björn's (Sweden) shadow for centuries to come.

Due to his poor health, Sigurd could not attend meetings, which led to decisions being made without his presence. Also due to his health, many of his former roles and responsibilities were given to other people, cutting his purpose in the union. He also couldn't work a job to sustain himself, so he had to rely on other people to keep him afloat, which only worsened his situation and made him financially dependent on others. All of a sudden his attendance or opinion didn't matter because his opinion could be outvoted by others in (and out) of the union. He was probably also unaware of agreements and plans that were not formally discussed, giving him reason to believe he was lied to or purposely kept in the dark about things that also concerned him.

While Magnus had found his place among other Nations, maintaining relations and seemingly enjoying his position, Sigurd couldn't do the same. Being bedridden and weak made maintaining friendships beyond the household practically impossible. Crashing down from his peak, and not being able to meet the expectations he once was meeting, would certainly affect Sigurd's mindset and self-image negatively. He was embarrassed and hid, sheltering himself basically. While Sigurd and Björn had grievances certainly even back then, I feel like they could still relate to one another, if not through their circumstances then through perspectives, which made them extremely close. They both had a harder time adapting to change, at least when compared to Magnus.

1) When was Emperor formed? Why was the name Thou Shalt Suffer changed?

Samoth - Emperor was brought to existence during the grey depressive autumn Anno 1991. Thou Shalt Suffer is a different band… When the gathering of Emperor took place, me and Ihsahn continued with Thou Shalt Suffer, but in the spring of Anno 1992, I left Thou Shalt Suffer and from that time, Ihsahn has worked alone, so Thou Shalt Suffer still breathes… Await the satanic symphonies of Thou Shalt Suffer

2) Who are the current members of Emperor?

Samoth - Samoth - Ihsahn - Tchort - Hellhammer

3) Since Mortiis was kicked-out, and Faust has been jailed, who have taken their places?

Samoth - After Mortiis “passed away”, Tchort joined our horde and last week Hellhammer from Mayhem took Faust’s place (since Faust is arrested and charged, and has also confessed to burning down one church and murdering one human pig (brutally-stabbed to death) he is unable to continue in Emperor… hail Faust!

4) Who are the unholy black-metal bands in the circle? And why have bands such as Immortal and Fester disassociated themselves? Can you also list some of the black metal bands from Norway, and list the “false” black metal bands?

Samoth - All bands who praise their art and will live and die for it. About Immortal and Fester… None of these bands claim to be black metal. Maybe things got to extreme for them… I don’t know, I haven’t talked to any of these guys for quite a while. Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem are the bands who “Sit on the throne”. (The future of Burzum and Mayhem are unsure)… Grishnackh will spend his next 20 years in jail, but he still has 2 unreleased albums/ Mayhem are “dead”, but “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” will be released, and Mayhem is immortal… They will forever exist one way or another). There are newer bands, such as Mysticum, Hades, Satyricon, and Gorgoroth. Also other bands, such as Arcturus, In the Woods which are not black metal, but dark music… And Enslaved, the epic metal gods of Norway which also “Sit on the throne”. To be honest, there aren’t many false bands here, they have been destroyed.

5) Satanism has become a big problem (haha!) in Norway, what do the common peasants think of you Unholy Sons?

Samoth - Black Metal and Satanism is hated like the plague!

6) Since the formation of the circle, how many churches have been burnt-down?

Samoth - About 10 churches have been burned in the name of black metal… And there have been other satanic cirmes such as ritual rape, church/grave desecrations, two murders, several attacks on christians (Tchort will go to court for one of these attack cases). And after the formation of the Norwegian Black Metal Circle, also other countries have been inspired… In Sweden, they have burned 3 churches, in Germany there have been two murders and one church-fire. in England there has been one church-fire, and in the U.S.A… I think there is more to come… The battle between good and evil is eternal… It is the nature itself…

7) Are you constantly being harassed by the police? Have you been accused of church burning?

Samoth - The police have watched us for a while, Grishnackh was arrested earlier this year, but was released because of the lack of proof, but after the murder on Euronymous, he was arrested again. Over 100 people went into the police station for questioning… That led to a lot of arrests, like Faust, and me… I am charged for burning down a church (“Skjold” church… One of the biggest wood churches in Norway… Only ashes are left…) together with Grishnackh… I have now confessed the crime (that is why I am out for jail), my case will go to court sometime next year. Other than Faust, Grishnackh and me, there were 6 other people arrested and most of them have confessed their crimes. So the police have really started a Black Metal Satanist hunt; anyway, this will not stop Emperor whatsoever!

8) What is some of the merchandise available from Emperor?

Samoth - The only stuff available from Emperor Horde are the “Wrath of the Tyrant” demo (a blank tape + 2/3 IRC’s), our mini album and shirts are available from Candlelight and several distributors.

9) What will be the future Emperor release? Will your style change?

Samoth - Our full length album “In the Nightside Eclipse” is recorded and is to be released as soon as possible. Also our demo will be released as an LP, only 666 copy’s by Necropolis Records… About our style… We will always progress, “In the Nightside Eclipse” is without any doubt the best thing we have done so far… It is more or less in the same way as our mini album, but with some progressions and more professional/atmospheric sound… A masterpiece of Pagan Black Metal art!

10) What are your favourite bands?

Samoth - I listen to a lot of different music, I like bands such as Bathory, Fear of God, Bel Canto, When, Dream Theater, Burzum, Darkthrone, Arcturus, Coil, Diamanda Galas, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Skyclad, Emperor, Mayhem, Katatonia, Dissection, Tiamat, Mordor, Abruptum, Morbid Angel, Rotting Christ, Deicide, Immortal, Necromantia, Thou Art Lord, Vangelis, Dead Can Dance, Manowar, GGFH, Sisters of Mercy, Eterne, The Church of Babylon, Enslaved, Tangerine Dream, Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Destruction, Software, Opeth, Munch, Mefisto, Das Ich, Malleus, and the list goes on, I also worship a lot of sound tracks. So I ain’t really close-minded when it comes to music, but I’m still quite fastidious when it comes to bands, the must “give” me something.

11) Are you planning on touring in the U.S. or in Europe?

Samoth - We have already done a U.K. tour (with U.K.’s black metal gods Cradle of Filth), and we were offered to join Dismember and Morbid Angel for a full European tour, but we let it down… We are not interested in supporting fucking Dismember, anyway Morbid Angel have my full respect, and I admire all their music… We have now been offered a tour (in Europe) with Samuel, we might do it… But as you know, things have happened here in Norway lately, so it depends on different things…

12) What do you think about Death Metal? And the scene here in Florida?

Samoth - I like real death metal, but I hate all this trendy bands that just keep on cloning each other all the fucking time… About Florida… Deicide and Morbid Angel are great bands, I also like the debut album of Athiest (I totally hate their crap lyrics… Life metal bullshit…) Florida is crap, I don’t like U.S.A in general (even though I have never been there…) And please someone get this Chuck “Flower Power” of Death killed… Fucking hell, he might be Jesus Christ!

13) Upon your death, will you rule in hell among evil…?

Samoth - I will rule in a medieval like realm of darkness… I will sit proudly at my throne with my blacksword at hand in my grey silent castle into the eternal forest…

❄️ the rest of his search party survived, they were just...frozen. they could observe the outside world, but couldn't move. frozen in chunks of ice, merely...observing.

❄️ meanwhile, Cruel King was frostburned almost all across his body, leaving only a small chunk of his flesh on the left side untouched, and his left eye frozen into a mere ice cube.

❄️ the fallout was devastating. the normally cheery town was quickly swept up in a deadly snowstorm, trapping the people who were in their homes inside, and freezing those who were unfortunate enough to be outside during the storm.

❄️ Blackrock dubbed this event "The great freeze".

❄️ After this, Cruel King was even more reclusive and quiet, feeling as if his people's suffering was his fault.

❄️ Technically it was, but he just wanted to do what would protect his beloved people! H-He didn't have any malicious intent! H-He swears!!

❄️ Then his defensiveness over his kingdom and people starts to grow, and fester into something more. Paranoia. Fear of outsiders. Fear of his kingdom getting destroyed even more.

❄️ Come time of Chapter 1, he increases security around the castle, using his newfound abilities to bring the statues around Blackrock Castle to life.

❄️ Whenever the heroes step onto the castle grounds, Cruel King can immediately tell the air has changed. That one of them is more than meets the eye. He tells his guards to be careful, but still defend with their lives.

❄️ When the heroes arrive in the throne room, unlike in-game, Cruel King freezes over the door out and windows. It was no longer a throne room. it was now a tomb.

❄️ The fight is long and grueling(more akin to Hatred in difficulty), but eventually, Cruel King is defeated, the Ice Dagger knocked from his hands for the first time in ages, finally rewarded with one last thing. Clarity.

❄️ He mumbles some ramblings about how he "just wanted to save my people", and how "the voices have returned...I failed him once again...I feel cold..."

❄️ and finally drops dead, cold on the floor.

❄️ Then he awakens in Nirvana. How long has he been out? Was he dead? Alive? Undead? He didn't understand.

❄️ But then his attention shifts to a more important topic.

❄️ the voices are gone. he was free.

❄️ thinking back on his final moments, he was furious with the heroes. how dare they take him away from his people, from his kingdom? how dare they strip the life he'd worked so hard for away from him?

❄️ but here he feels oddly...at peace. like all weight has been lifted from his shoulders.

❄️ Then he starts wondering what his kingdom is doing. how Kitchen Wizard is doing.

❄️ Then he hears the spawnpoint activate. He turns to the direction the sound came from, finding the party of heroes approaching.

❄️ They spar for a while, the king's anger slowly petering out as he sees their strength at its peak. yes...they could protect his kingdom. keep it afloat.

❄️ Eventually, he yields. And he gives them a card as gratitude for the sparring matches. They could call on him whenever they needed to.

❄️ Woe, inflicts lactose intolerance upon yon king.

❄️ He paid Kitchen Wizard visits as often as he could, he likes him :)

❄️ He dad sneezes so loud it just sometimes. echoes. it scares some of the knights sometimes.

❄️ He's always had ice magic, the Ice Dagger just amplified it to the UNHEALTHY EXTREME.

❄️ He sticks his tongue out whenever he focuses.

❄️ Shorp teefies. he could bite hard enough to make anyone bleed if threatened.

❄️ Speaking of bite, uh. he can like. have an IRON GRIP??? WITH HIS JAW??? SOMEHOW???

❄️ his favorite meal is a bowl of fully loaded baked potato soup from Kitchen Wizard :3

❄️ he WILL mope in his bathtub if needed, DO NOT INTERRUPT HIM!!!

❄️ The Snorey Bears around the area? He helped raise those mofuckers. They're fat because of HIM.

❄️ Someone tried to set up mouse traps around the castle once when CK was younger. CK sobbed deeply. They just want CHEESE!!! Said person was fired immediately.

❄️ Somehow always smells of peppermint...

❄️ Chunker. Kitchen Wizard made sure he was well fed when he was younger and CK kept those eating habits up into adulthood.

❄️ His ass could NOT survive Turitopolis' climate.

❄️ He never really got any portraits painted of himself, as he wanted to try to not become overly vain.

❄️ He sucks at showing emotion. Like, dude is terrible at it.

❄️ Usually speaks in a monotone voice, but if he yells, you better get running.
